Sometime after I arrived at my appointment, I realized that I was seeing another doctor besides Dr. Callender (who I requested). The other doctor was fine, but I find it deceptive when one doctor is requested, to discover that my request was ignored. I was not informed of the change at the time of the request, nor at any time after my arrival, until I was in the exam room and the nurse said, "Dr. #### will be in shortly." The LACK of professionalism is astounding. All the reviews, about the front desk staff never answering the phone, are accurate. On the rare occasion they do answer? You are immediately hit with attitude and aggression. Lisa is one of the culprits. They answer, give you attitude, put you on hold and then hang up. Yes... hang up. I was simply calling to confirm my appointment was cancelled to ensure I wasn't hit with a $50 no show fee. It should not take several calls, voicemails, a text to the appointment line and an email to the cancellation address to cancel an appointment. My reason for calling once more? I got no confirmation my appointment was cancelled and wanted to ensure they had it on record. I have tolerated the nonsense from the staff here for over a year because this practice specializes in black skin but this is just too much disrespect to remain a patient. Don't get me started on the wait time. If you are seen an hour after your scheduled appointment time you're lucky. I'm done with this practice. The demeanor on that front desk staff - specifically the black lady with the glasses is abysmal. She was so unnecessarily nasty and just down right rude to me both times I brought my daughter in. I really do not know what her issue is but there are so many other kind and polite people looking for work, that would absolutely make the VERY FIRST ENCOUNTER patients have at this office, a more pleasant one. Truly hope she has the day she deserves. On top of that being our initial experience, we weren't seen for almost an hour after our scheduled appointment time with zero acknowledgment of the wait. The nurse also failed to mention my daughter's specific concerns to the doctor. If not for Dr. Solomon and the office manager Ms. Tasha, I would have taken my child up outta there immediately. I always try to patronize black businesses, especially those located in my neighborhood. Trying to schedule an appointment with Callender Dermatology has been an issue for years and apparently no one seems to care. I called to make an appointment with the dermatology side of this office and the phone just rang until the answering machine came on. I called back 3 or 4 more times with no answer. I decided to try the cosmetic side and someone picked up eventually, after quite a few rings. I told the young lady that I was trying to make an appointment with dermatology but no one was answering. The young lady scheduled my appointment for Wednesday, July 8, 2026 at 2:45 pm. with Dr. Young...cool or so I thought. When I arrived today at 2:25, I was told there was no appointment scheduled for me. I asked about the possibility of seeing someone else, but there was no availability. What a waste of time. When I arrived at the office, I was waiting behind another patient who used an openly gay slur/gesture to the front desk employee. The employee then repeated the gay/slur gesture and started laughing. I have gay family members and friends and find that behavior offensive. The young lady at the front desk then handed me my papers. I asked for the WiFi password as it wasn't posted (or visible) and she acted annoyed and yelled it to me. I apologized for asking and her mood seemed to change. Once I saw the provider, she disagreed with all treatments or suggestions I had. I told her and the medical assistant that I had previously seen another dermatologist and only changed because of insurance. That dermatologist did steroid shots (which worked) and hydroquinone 10% (which worked); she said "we don't do that here". Then when I said to her that I knew the spots was because I was a picker, she stated "well stop doing that". This experience was so cold and unwelcoming. I chose this office because of the reputation of being great with African American skin. I was only met with an anti LGBTQ front desk employee with an attitude and a P.A. who only cared to do what she wanted to do which I believe is to prescribe me ointments that will likely not work. I would like to note that she never even bothered to ask my skin care routine, I had to bring it up. read more

My husband and I were given a referral to Dr Callender but it wasn't a good experience at all. As seniors, we were treated very rudely. The referral given to us had the wrong address on it, which made us get to our appointment late. When we arrived, we tried to explain what happened to her staff but were told that they didn't know what time or if we would be seen. The staff person came from behind her desk and confronted us with a very curt remark. In response, my husband explained that it wasn't our fault and that we shouldn't be penalized. Since we didn't know when or what time we would be seen, we had to leave because we had other appointments. As seniors, we felt totally disrespected by her staff and we left without seeing the doctor. I still wanted to be seen by a dermatologist, and I got another referral for Dr Callender office this April. I was given an appointment time and day. When I called her office a staff person told me I owed $25 fee for canceling my appointment. I explained again happened before when we came and were late but told her I would pay the $25. Well, I guess that wasn't go enough for Dr Callender because we both received registered letters that we had to sign for at the post office. The letter stated that Dr. Callender decided to discharge us from her medical practice. Wow. First off, we have not been seen by Dr. Callender, so how is she discharging us. Sounds more like senior discrimination or retaliation for us being late initially or something. Not sure why two seniors looking for a good dermatologist are being treated this way. I first visited Dr. Callendar's practice many years ago at her old Central Avenue location, and I have returned to her multiple times over the years until my recent November 17th visit. I have always enjoyed positive experiences and outcomes. She and her staff have been personable and professional in every sense. Dr. Callendar and Dr. Young are knowledgeable and provide the best and proven strategies, treatments and therapies to address the issues for which I had come to them. Callender acted as if she was doing ME a favor... She was late, didn't want to look at my scalp nor my skin, rushed the appointment and stood by the door away from me as if I was some circus freak and she had more important things to do. To make it worse, they NEVER SENT OUT MY PRESCRIPTION. I called every day back to back and nobody answered. THEY DO NOT ANSWER THEIR PHONES, there is no way to contact anyone. I had to take off work and come back just to speak to somebody. Callender didn't care to come out and apologize, nor did she have any valid explanation, and her entire staff is just as unprofessional as she is. While I understand medical insurance, my services were always very compartmentalized and required multiple visits, each requiring a separate billing and go pay. For one service, I had to have multiple visits for something that should've taken only one or two. Also, I would always need to call after an appointment to get my meds sent to the pharmacy. Calling, itself, was a bit of a hassle because I would have to call multiple times in order to reach someone. if you are going to schedule a follow up visit, I suggest you do it while you were there. Calling for an appointment was also a challenge and, after several phone calls, it just became easier to go up there in person to schedule. read more

I've had two appointments here, one virtual and one in person. Both times, the doctor acted like she was doing me a favor. For my first appointment (virtual), the doctor debated the diagnosis previous dermatologists and allergists had given me (even though they had seen me in person), then sent extra prescriptions I had not asked for to the pharmacy. I have had psoriasis for 10+ years and only use one prescription that works, and she insists from what she could see via webcam that it is eczema and added two extra prescriptions. I was two minutes late for my last appointment and wasn't seen for another 45 minutes. When I was finally seen, the doctor barely introduced herself before lecturing me on the importance of being on time. I had not complained about the wait, so the condescending lecture I received was unprofessional and unnecessary. The last straw was yesterday morning. I called and left a message (because they don't answer that line) for a prescription refill and have yet to hear back. I won't be returning. read more

I had a very disappointing first experience with Callender Dermatology and will never return. To start, I was initially "greeted" by the receptionist in a very unwelcoming manner. She looked at me blankly, without even a hello, and said "how may I help you?" in a dismissive tone. She eventually warmed up by the end of our encounter, but not a great first impression. After a typical length wait in the waiting room, I was taken back to an examination room by one of the medical assistants, who was wonderful. She asked a host of questions, took photos of my concerns, and answered any questions I had for her. Unfortunately this was the last positive experience I had that day. I waited over 30 minutes in the examination room for the Physician Assistant to arrive. I went to the front desk after 20 minutes to remind them that I was waiting, and was brushed off by the receptionist who said "she's on the phone with another patient". Not sure why a PA would take a long phone call while a patient was waiting for them in person, but 30+ minutes in an examination room is excessive. When the PA finally arrived, she did not apologize or even acknowledge that I had been waiting for so long. She was also clearly unprepared to examine me. She had a handwritten sheet with a few notes, but none of the detailed notes or photos that the medical assistant had taken on the tablet. She asked some of the same questions, but didn't give clear medical advice on any of my concerns. For one item, she said she'd prescribe me a medication that I had already told the medical assistant that I'm allergic to (it was in the notes). Eventually she agreed to send another prescription to my pharmacy, but it's been 2 weeks and that has not been done. I should not have to chase down a medical professional to do their job, whether in the office or afterwards. I'm very disappointed to say that I'll never return to this practice, because I was excited to find a black owned dermatologist. read more

Dr. Callender was referred to me by a cosmetic tattoo artist. Long story short, my face from the neck up was becoming, darker by the day and started to look like leather, not the smooth type, with an intense itch. Additionally, every morning may skin was shedding, like dandruff on my face and neck. This issue began in late July. The first doctor I conferred with in a 15 minute video consult, wanted me to wait 3 more months and check back with him. He said it was due to sun sensitivity. That it had developed over time and was now presenting itself as hyperpigmentation. I explained that my skin didn't seem to accept any type of moisturizer that it didn't accept any cream or lotion for any length of time. I was feeling desperate. He reccomended an OTC product and suggested I get back to him in a few months. Needless to say I was not happy. Fast forward, Dr. Callender is my life saver. She listened and observed my overall appearance. She reccomended two OTC sunscreens in addition to 2 prescription ointments. In a matter of days, my skin began to heal. I want to buy a tub of the creams and lotions so I could immerse myself in them! THANK YOU DR. CALLENDER! I have never been to the office, which is the only reason you didn't get 5 stars!!! I had Dr. Patterson for years, I had no problems. Then, I had to have repeated visits and I opted for a second opinion. That is when I noticed the very inferior service at Dr. Callenders. So, Dr. Patterson was not correct this time. Really, no problem. But the assistance were horrible. I think the worse case is when I sat in the waiting room for 45 minutes, which is unusual. However, one lady walked past me several times with earphones working as if I was not there. When I finally asked about the holdup, her only response was I thought you were waiting for someone - - the reason for the delay was worse and I don't remember what it was. I got worse when I tried to transfer my medical records. It took about six months. I had seen the new doctor about twice since during that time period.... even getting appointments with the new doctor was much, much easier. read more

Can't ever get a phone call back. Receptionist always have an attitude. Carrying on conversations about their personal lives and slinging there fake hair. First thing " you have a co-pay form 2018" I never received a bill. If you don't pay , you can't be seen. what about a hello...how ya doing. After about an hour, I saw a PA. She was nice...took a biopsy and prescribed me some greasy medication about a week later. This med didn't take care of the problem I was in there for. I have had this condition on and off and wanted to get prescription medication versus OTC. Don't care for this practice. I will not be returning. read more

Be very careful when booking an appointment. They do not tell you who you are scheduled with, meaning if it is with the Physician or a Physician Assistant (PA). I had an appointment with a PA who looked at a bump on my skin. Without conducting a biopsy or any form of testing, she confidently told me it was a boil and offered to lance it. My instinct told me she was incorrect. I visited another practice, where the physician conducted a biopsy. The bump turned out to be a form of skin cancer and if she lanced it, it would have continued to grow and would not have know it was cancerous. I would NOT recommend this practice to anyone. read more

My surgeon recommended that I see Dr. Callendar for some surgery scarring. It was a mistake from the very beginning, and I blame myself for even considering this terrible establishment. First, they didn't take my insurance, which meant a $185.00 consultation fee. Fine. On my way to my initial appointment, I realized that I would be 20 minutes because of traffic. Appt was at 11:45. I called at 11:10 and was on hold for 30 minutes to be told that only a PA would see me. Y'all could have told me that 11:10, 11:15 before I was on the highway on my way there. Why was I on hold for so long for such a simple question? They then decided that I could see Dr. Callender for a telehealth visit later that day at 2. If you, the patient, are late or don't show up for telehealth, you pay them $50 late fees. Also, you pay the 185 upfront. Dr. Callender was 30 minutes late. So I'm sitting here waiting for her, calling the office. They kept me on hold as they did initially, only to ignore me. When she finally joined, she did NOT APOLOGIZE. However, she did acknowledge being late at the end of the call. While she seemed knowledgeable, she was also trying to tell me that they did take my insurance or would at some point, even though the front desk said something very different just earlier that day. She also suggested that I not see my surgeon until she sees me in the office, which is confusing. Why would I not continue seeing the Dr who referred me to you? I don't think it was nefarious, but the combination of abysmal customer service, the lack of clarity on insurance policies, and the sales-sy pitch I was getting from Dr. Callendar made it clear that this wasn't the place for me. I'm so frustrated. I've been looking for a Black Dermatologist for over a month now, and I have a significant scarring issue from a surgery that did not go as planned. I'm working on overcoming significant medical trauma, and it sucked that one of the only Black-owned dermatologists, Black women at that, is just terrible. The reviews don't lie y'all.
