We belong to the Mt. Diablo School District. Yes, I know, we should have found that out before we bought our home. Actually, our real estate agent did tell us about school districts, but somehow we didn't really focus on it since he was 3 at the time and it seemed so far far away. Anyway, back to the story, we were diappointed. THEN, when we went to the enrollment day, which they call "All-in-One" day, we found out that the school has involved parents, good teachers, and even a foundation. AND, this sounds crazy, EVEN A COMPUTER LAB FOR KINDERGARTENERS -- yeah, they go once a week. The downsides of the school are the same that any school has: fundraisers that are optional (but not really), budget issues (this upcoming 08-09 year will be even tougher), and turnover of principals (we had three principals for the 07-08 school year). But the school really does its best to make new families feel welcome - giving plenty of opportunities for volunteerism that involve little time to once a week (probably more). And the parent involvement and the dreaded fundraising help fill the gap of the funding from the government. We feel very lucky that our kids go to this school.

I want to start by saying this is a long time coming, and this is just my experience…read more We first looked at Meher after learning our son's previous preschool prioritized moving kids up to open seats, over real development. He was three, and his old school, though called Montessori, felt like just unstructured play with no guidance. We wanted better for him, so we applied to Meher. When I spoke with the administrator, she was initially hesitant to transfer him but ultimately accepted our application but in hindsight it felt influenced by where we live and work more than our child's needs. On our tour, we learned about the school's "legacy" tradition: multiple generations attend, and one teacher is even an alumna. It struck me as both odd and charming--I wondered if our son's future children might go there too. They want you to stay on his first day (and as long as needed) to help him adjust. Since we both WFH, one of us could be there until he settled in. We appreciated the school's structure: clear work time and play time, unlike his old school's laissez-faire approach. Fast-forward to his transition: he struggled with the new routines, having mini-meltdowns when he couldn't do things his way. On day one, another child cried for an hour over a forgotten jacket. Day two, the same child sobbed over his beanie. Then our son had his first major meltdown screaming and crying. Concerns arose when a parent complained her son was negatively affected by our child's outburst, even though her child had cried extensively before our son had any issues. We were also told one of the girls in the class reported the meltdowns to her principal father. During one episode, the teacher scooped our son up facing her; he flailed and knocked her glasses off. I don't think what he did was right, but at age three, kids sometimes lash out in fear or frustration. After just four days in class, the school questioned whether Meher was right for him. They cited the legacy parent's complaint, the report to her father, and the incident with the glasses. This happened just before Founders Day; a big celebration we didn't know about and weren't part of. When I picked up his things, I saw the pomp and realized the decision had more to do with "show" and pleasing established families than supporting all students. In the end, I learned two things: 1. In the school, legacy families hold sway, and compassion is in short supply. 2. The administration cares more about appearances for legacy parents than the well-being of every child. They promised to "follow up" and welcome him back, but we never heard from them again. If you're new to the area (we moved to Saranap in 2021) and lack connections, think twice before choosing Meher. Your child won't get the same grace as those with legacy ties, and the school won't invest in you as much as you'll invest in it.

Classrooms are filled with laughter, no matter the grade. From projects to essays, students have a sense of unity to make their learning experience fun. Aside from academics, the sports program is the cherry on top of PHAA. The boys' and girls' volleyball teams are undefeated. Boys and Girls basketball put in the work. The school showcases its accomplishments in the upstairs trophy case! Students go on away games for all sports, bringing back win after win. The music program is more than amazing. Singing in different churches and occasionally traveling to praise God. The school is faith-based. Every Friday, students host a chapel where they sing and praise God. Students are able to speak a few words or have special speakers as well. The best thing about PHAA is traveling. Students have been able to go to Washington, D.C., and recently went to New York! Students are able to expand their minds and have a flexible schedule. Not just putting their heads in a book, but also traveling! There are so many leadership opportunities to prepare you for college. Starting from SA positions, the National Honor Society, and the class government. On campus, we have a beautiful field and a great playground for elementary school. The campus is filled with trees, flowers, and a wonderful structure in front of the high school. The one-on-one interactions with teachers have really helped my academic career move faster than it would at a public school. The friendships that I have made over the past 12 years are friendships that I will cherish for the rest of my life. My class feels like a family, everyone I have known since elementary school and I believe that I wouldn't have made these connections if I had attended a public school. Our school also gives opportunities that other schools wouldn't give, this school year alone we have gone to Albion which is a isolated area in the mountains near Mendocino CA, went to New England (New York, Boston, and Philedelphia), and we are going to Oahu for our Senior Class trip. There are so many opportunities for leadership options as well, because of our small school size students can hold multiple leadership roles at the same time, you can be Yearbook Editor, Class President, Sports Team Captain, Orchestra First Chair, and Praise Team Director at the same time! The staff was horrible as they did not guide classes better. My son still has trouble to this day finding his classes. The water fountains were loose and not tight and when my son touched it, it almost fell down. Thankfully he told me they were fixed. Also the pool is way too deep my son could drown. Dirty bathrooms with slippery tiles and no toilet paper replaceage. Overall it's a ok school just needs to fix these flaws.
