I been trying the food here for the past year. It looks good from the glass but it is terrible. The beans n rice are nasty. The chile verde with pork or pork ribs is sour and if the guy serving you dont like you, you will get enough meat for one little corn taco and be stuck with beans n rice. The carnitas are nasty. Seriously. Try the carnitas without salsa. Because i did and the meat was rotten. They store the meat from the day before and they dont know which is from which day so you can get carnitas from monday and its sunday. The carne asada is hard rock/pebbles bullshyt. The pupusas are mediocre. But im used to handmade on the spot so im spoiled. The chicken, tortillas and salsa roja is the only thing thats good. The agua frescas are good too the water melon tastes weird sometimes and if u get strawberry they give you pulp and theres only 30% juice bullshyt. But it tastes good. Ask for no pulp. How do you mess up so many things when you have a bakery a carneceria and a grocery store? Edit: forgot to add that i returned caldo de res for raw potatos in soup. The lady didnt believe me until she bit into the potato and looked real dumb and had the manager give me my money back. And i baught sweet bread and it had metal shards on it probably from a machine i guess but i threw that away. The tamales are not good thats why they are fully stocked everytime you go. Vallarta is good for all of one's Latin supermarket needs. The store was cleaner & neater than I remember in the past. The deli is bigger and has more items to choose from including basic things to eat (Pork Ribs With Cactus In Salsa Verde--costillas de cerdo con nopalitos and fresh Spanish rice). Sells bad product. My wife made tamales for Christmas eve dinner. When she was cooking them, there was a sour smell coming from them. When they were done, I tasted it and the MASA was sour. Terrible Taqueria. Just ate one of the saddest burritos of my life. The wait at 11:30 for 2 burrtioes to go was approximately 15 minutes and there was only ONE other customer in front it me. The cashier and guy assembling the food move at the speed of baby turtles because they are so engaged in an interesting conversation with each other. Wait aside, the quality of the food was so poor. Carne asada was some of the chewiest ligament mess I've ever gotten in a burrito. My rating is solely based off the bakery portion of this store The Vallarta is a full service grocery store with two locations in Santa Maria. Today's visit was solely to purchase a birthday cake for my daughter. A Tres Leches cake to be specific. As I approached the counter I became overwhelmed with the variety of cakes, different colors and sizes. The prices were reasonable and the staff were well versed on their goods. The bakery section also offered an array of donuts and pastries (pan dulce ) as an alternative to the cakes. read more

WHERE IS THE GUAVA JELLY? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Why is it so hard to find Guava Jelly? I first called the older Vallarta near the beginning of Broadway ....not once...twice! The girl who answered the phone kept hanging up on me, each time I asked whether they had Guava Jelly. DOES GUAVA JELLY SOUND PERVERTED IN SPANISH? I know a few words of Junior High Spanish & I still have no idea... Anyway, I then said to myself, if I am going to trek all the way down to SM for Guava Jelly, I should check out their new store. I then called the new store & now asked who should I talk to to find out if they have an item in stock. They connected me & did not hang up...wow. The person that I talked too claimed that they had two different brands of Guava Jelly....& not Guava Paste...which is more common in Hispanic food. So my main mission was to get it right when I walked in. I asked 4-5 staff , each sending me to look somewhere else or ask someone else. Was it with the other Jellies or Preserves, as suggested? Nope! Was it in the Hispanic section? Nope! OK, now I needed a manager...customer service counter was closed...so I again looked for someone in charge... & found the assistant manager who was quite nice. He did not let on if .... "Guava Jelly sounded perverted in Spanish", but he did lead me back to the Hispanic section, where he did find Goya Guava Paste..... I then told him that I had found that on-line, Walmart sold Goya Guava Jelly, so I know that they do make it. Very nicely, he offered to special order it, next week, when the Goya Guy came in to deliver. SO STILL NO JELLY! Anyway, as usual, we then went nuts buying all sorts of things that would cost 2-5 times as much in SLO's Whole Foods, or some other pricey places. I took dozens of pics of all the goodies, but the signal was crap....maybe overwhelmed by Pokemons...so they vanished some how. We were thrilled by the super-cheap fresh veg /fruit juices, that was just as good as Lassen's, but far bigger & cheaper. Not organic, but who cares! The fresh veg, fruits, & bins held all kinds of goodies... some great buys, some not so hot. Good Buys: 3 huge Mangos for $1; Fresh Green Spices for 69 cents ; Asian Pears 2 for $1; & lots of other produce. I took pics of tons of stuff that I had no idea about so I could ask Yelpers or Goggle it later... LIKE CANARY SEEDS.... ARE THEY FOR THE BIRDS? (Total damage for the cart= $70 (or $700 in Whole Paycheck terms)) ~~~~~~~ The moral of the above story is 1- NOT TO TRUST "PHONE STOCK" 2- DO NOT COUNT YOUR GUAVA JELLY BEFORE THEY ARE IN YOUR CART! 3- DO NOT ASK THE OPERATOR FOR ANY KIND OF JELLY....ESPECIALLY NOT GUAVA! ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Before we left, I also grabbed & partially ate some of the "Cafeteria" fair that these stores have look so appealing in the pics. I love Vallarta. They have a good variety of items and at good prices. Produce for days! Marinated chicken that doesn't double the price, that's service I like. Cheese - so much queso it makes me cray cray. Aside from the huge grocery selection here, you can pretty much spend hours at Vallarta. I come to This Vallarta location maybe once every two month or so. It's about 45 minutes from home but the drive is worth it. Their produce and meat prices are amazing! They have a fresh bakery. Try some Mexican sweet bread (pan dulce). Plenty of parking and staff is always nice and willing to help. They also have an indoor restaurant that has a little of everything. If you have a craving for some fast Mexican food with good flavor, order a some carnitas (fried pork) and grab a fresh hot off the conveyor belt pack of delicious corn tortillas. They have all the fixings for free: chiles, salsas, friend onions, cilantro, lemon etc. I'd also suggest you try the roasted chicken. It's super flavorful and moist. Yum. Overall, if you're looking for a Mexican product or are thinking of cooking an authentic Mexican dish, this is your grocery store stop. Tip: be cautious of high peak hours....Friday-Sunday it's a mad house! Tons of people...if you don't mind that's great but it proves to be a bit much for me lol I like to go on a day I'm off during the week or late in the evening or super early mornings. North Broadway! Horrible experience. They didn't honor their sale sign 2 for $3.00. Said there was a limit at the cash register which I would of respected but there was no sign posted of such limit. It was sad looking and they had no mango. They said they were out of mango. I'm a Mexican grocery store. Okay. I asked for tajin and salt and she said they didn't have salt. Fine, I'll add some later. There was a condiment stand with cilantro, salt packets and limes. It was littered with trash, the limes had no tongs/fork and many items were empty. Beautiful meats and produce all at great prices. Plus salsas, house made tortillas, and other latin products. They even carry Salsa Lizano from Costa Rica. And the store is clean with friendly staff. I love this place just because of the amount of money I save shopping here as compared to any of the big chain grocery stores in the area. Not to mention it is usually cleaner than any of those chain stores. The only downside is that they don't have much 'organic' stuff. If this is something you like to buy, best to stick with shopping at Trader Joe's. If this doesn't bother you, then try this place and save yourself some money. I've been here before a couple times for the juice bar and smoothies. Today I went in to get an ice cream cone. I got the mint n chip with a sugar cone. First of all the ice cream was expired I'm pretty sure. It had little chunks and to creamy at all. It tasted old. I then threw the ice cream away just to eat the cone only to find out it was stale. I no longer know how fresh the food is there. I recommend they switch their cones Daily and pay more attention to the their ice cream read more

I LOVE this place for lunch and take home dinners! At lunch I order chile verder burritos, or tacos - both are so good! For dinner I often pick up the grilled chicken meal, which can easily serve 4 people for like $15! It's SO good and you get three sides. I haven't really shopped in the grocery store, but I have wandered around. The salsa bar is always fresh, and their salsas are really yummy. I have tried their aguas frescas (fresh drinks) and all of them are super refreshing, albeit a bit sweet. Overall, this place is always packed with customers so expect to wait in line.
