Wifey and I swung by to pick up a couple of things from Spencer's tonight. One of our stops included Spencer's excellent hot/deli counter and we were attended by Elaina. Both Wifey and I have historical, fond memories of our days in food service and Elaina is arguably the best person we've encountered in many, many years as it relates to product knowledge, customer service, customer interaction, & attention to detail. As silly as it my read to many, we're pretty particular on how our cold cuts/cheese are shaved/sliced and Elaina had no issues with our requests and actually complimented them. She made some on-point (for us) suggestions, could carry a conversation, all the while promptly handling what we ordered, then was prepared to engage the next customer behind us. On top of making as feel at home, she also shared with us some aspects of Spencer's that we didn't know; they are now baking their own bread rolls fresh, to include (apparently quick to disappear) jalapeño rolls! We've had some pretty cavalier deli personnel of late, but Elaina is a gem and Spencer's collectively has never disappointed us. read more

A couple of people recommended Spencers for Prime Rib. We went there and talked to the butcher and he suggested for the number of guest to get 30 pounds of it. We chose to have it divided. They told the rib bones off, stuffed the prime rib with garlic and put seasoning on top. Then they put it all back together. We picked it up a couple of days prior to cooking. I saw how big they were and at checkout I was asked if I wanted some cut off. Which I thought was very kind but my husband said no.All the family said it was the best prime rib they ever had and that's saying a lot. We had leftovers but everyone took some home. Big fan of their meat department. Last Christmas, we pre-ordered a rib roast. They were on sale for $7.99/lb, and we chose the pre-seasoned option. Spectacular. We have also purchased the tomahawk ribeyes, which they seem to bring out for special holidays like Independence and Father's Days. This month, they were $17.99/lb, and we can't wait to BBQ one. Spencer's Market has that great local feel. I've been to all his markets that he has owned and they were all good. The market in Santa Maria is smaller but you can still find what you need. These days are a bit different but I feel this market will continue even if the times get worst. Today we came in and got everything we needed. I think we are getting use to wearing the mask and I have to wear gloves because I have a very bad habit of touching my face. I got assistance with the deli lady, she got me my turkey sliced the way I wanted. Our cashier was very good at directing other people on how to get a certain product and direct them on how to follow the arrows on the floor being very informative following social distancing. Very disappointed. We've been going to Spencer's to get our meats and cheeses for a couple years now. This last time we went, we stepped in a couple of minutes before they were going to close the deli, and the lady was just standing there behind the counter. She looked at us and said. We closed at 8. It wasn't even 8pm yet. We just wanted to get a couple things. Makes me so upset that people have forgotten what customer service is all about. I work down the street from Spencer, so when I don't bring lunch, I go to the store deli, as it's much cheaper for me. The deli has been very disappointing the last few times I've been in. I came in one day, and they had more empty bowls than they did full, and the salads they had looked as if no one had touched them in a while. I love their chicken, but today, I came in around the lunch hour no fried chicken, a huge pan of Potato wedges, some chicken wings, and a couple of other things that looked like they had been there for a while. I bought the wings, and there was nothing hot about them, no spice to them, and they were so greasy. I was a deli manager for years, and it breaks my heart to see a deli that would do great, but because of how it's run, they are losing money. It's all about training and having common sense. Know that it's all in the presentation. Make sure those salads are stirred and refreshed every couple of hours, making sure you have the name of the salad and cost. At lunchtime, you need that hot case full of what sells. Fried chicken takes 25 minutes (according to the lady in the deli), whereas potato wedges and corn dogs only take a few minutes. I want to go behind their case and show them how to make their case and department more appealing. read more

While I enjoyed everything we bought for our central coast trip, I really felt like things were overpriced and was disappointed in the produce selection. Other reviewers raved about that section of the store, and it was one of my main motivations for choosing to shop here - but I had a hard time finding quality, ripe selections in the options available. The service was very nice and prompt, they were being safe and masks were required. We were happy with the meat products we purchased (steaks, some sausages). Everytime I come to town I shop at Spencers. The meat and produce are the best. The employees are always helpful.

If you want to go to a home town feel market this is the place. They pride in the fresh produce and meat selection. The place has been fully remodeled to give a better feel in your shopping experience. The deli and hot food items are a must to eat. Staff are great and friendly. Will keep going for years to come. I love our local Spencer's. The meat they sell is some of the best quality around. Yes you may have to spend a bit more if its not on sale but it's worth it. The only thing I would ask is that the checkers smile and be more friendly. I see how they laugh and interact with one another but the customer seems to be a bother. This is a full service grocery store well know for their fresh meats and produce. Their produce is locally sourced and they sell Harris Ranch meats. Of special note is the seasoned prime rib roasts. Order early for the holidays as the lines to just pick them up can get pretty long. They are that good. Highly recommended. read more

This store keeps getting better. My only issue is with the deli. It's hit's hit or miss on customer service. Some act like they are doing you a favor when waiting on you. I keep trying but some slice the meat too thick. Pre-packaged seems like a better option some times. Too bad. I also miss the Bear Claws. Bring back the bear claws. Good steaks (Harris Ranch). I enjoyed this store as I got help by the manager, I believe her name is Dom as we were having cute lil convos though I did have a bad encounter with a young man, as he told me to go get my eyebrows done like his weren't worse than mine. I miss the crew from many years ago. I miss the twins. I miss Dena. I miss the ladies that retired years ago. Now, there are only two cashier's that treat everyone kindly. One Lady who has an accent and dark hair and a gentleman with same accent and dark hair. The one woman with lighter hair and accent only treats those of certain races kindly. The rest of us are treated rudely, at times not even looking at us but rather talking to customers behind us who happen to be a different race than us. Why she is still there after so many years I can't understand. The young cashier's try but a lot of chit chat with CO workers during transactions. No longer shop there. Get the creeps and feel so unwelcome. Perhaps Mr Spencer needs to have an in-service on how to treat customers or have the first two cashier's I mentioned teach the rest. Been coming here since last year and they don't have a mask policy for customers. Every time I come here there's some people who shop that don't wear a mask! Why is this store not kicking out customers not wearing a mask? I feel so sorry for all the employees here having to deal with these customers. They should put a sign outside that makes it MANDATORY to wear a mask and the ones that refuse to wear one be denied entry! This isn't a political thing, it's supposed to prevent it from spreading! If you want things to go back to normal the least you could do is put up with it until then. But I guess you all want to wait for a family member to get it to believe it's real! My uncle died from it and two of my moms friends died from it. Another uncle that I know whose daughter works at Mcdonald's got it from another coworker and it spread to everyone but they still made the employees work while sick. I wouldn't complain about this if it wasn't true. I don't find this laughable. As much as this is a nice store, I'm still going to report it because the people coming here with no masks aren't taking Covid seriously. This is a humble market with so much to offer and though it can offer more- they are a very good alternative to trader joes and the natural foods place on broadway Priced at 1.99 their breakfast burrito is a deal, I bought 2 one for me and one for mommy that is until my pops had a bite of mine; I ended up buying 4 that day. From what i recall the burrito had eggs, ham, cheese and a bit of tomatillo salsa which we all enjoyed thoroughly though my apa amended 2 more chile verde to suit his pallete, he's funny that way. Spencer's makes it a point to carry the latest demands of nutritious foods and this time around coconut juice was featured. Before there was a Trader Joes this was one of the few places In town to offer alternative,fair trade organic foods such as chocolate, milk, meats, coffee, and for that reason alone I've been a loyal customer. They also have a respectable stock of microbrew beers. Items I purchased last time: Naked's coconut juice and protein drink, pomegranate juice, Honest Tea's pomegranate & white tea, greek yogurt with figs (YUMMY, my Mexican Mammi LOVED it), humus, pita chips, kiwi, beets, shallots, jalapenos Another reason I'm such a fan is their local, non- crowded, and familiar atmosphere, they compel me to chat with any receptive souls. To conclude THE FIRST Spencers's Fresh Market review in Santa Maria. a couple of reasons to stop by: 1. Breakfast burrito 2. Their nifty rolling hand cart. This hand held cart, CONVERTS, into a pulley wagon to acknowledge that though you came for one item you may end up unable to carry the cart to the checkout because of all the uuooo and Aaah items you happen upon. 3.
