I literally decorated my entire front lawn for Halloween from the dollar tree and every decoration was $1.25 from tombstones to skeleton skulls to really cool signs. A lot of the stuff is pretty decent. I'm just happy to finally find a dollar store that everything is a dollar well $1.25 and I don't have to ask how much is this that and that. They even have inflated helium balloons For birthdays! I went to a dollar store about 10 minutes away before I found this one and the balloons were freaking $3.50 like what!? So this place has them for $1.25 and I'm thrilled. Huge selection of stuff here too. Candy to toys - even cool toys! To art and school supplies to kitchenware and more.

Most of the puzzles are terrible photos that someone shouldn't have been paid to take. But there are a few awesome 500 piece puzzles that are a buck each. I highly recommend the jelly bean puzzle if you're up for the most frustrating hours of your life. Also the office supplies are pretty great. But there's always a very long line.

Located on 14th Ave in a mini shopping center called Whitestone Shopping Center with a parking lot in College Point, the Deals$ store is much larger than the Family Dollar. The Deal$ chain is owned by my favorite dollar store chain, Dollar Tree. Compared to the Family Dollar next door, I feel the Deal$ store is more organized and has a store "feel" to it with actual Deal$ flyers at the store's entrance. The day I came to visit, I was looking to buy some inexpensive hangers and I found a ten pack of hangers for, which seems to be a better deal than buying the Dollar one for maybe three hangers. Each aisle has similarly-grouped products so it is easier to shop and look for specific items. The right side of the store starts from home items and the left side of the store is food and drinks. There is usually only one cashier working, but there maybe two during times of necessity. A lot of the products sold at Deal$ is also sold at Dollar Tree. While Deal$ doesn't seem to be too bad of a place, the feeling of things costing me over a dollar doesn't make me feel too good because I'll always be pricing everything in my head to see if it is actually cheaper than if I bought it somewhere else. Once you walk in, there is a staff to greet you. The staff at the exit area who checks your receipt is very nice and helpful. There was a store next to BJ's Wholesale Club. I recall it was a Davids's Bridal. Well BJ's Wholesale took over that area and now is pick up area. There is a line for express too. Lots of options to check out now. No more long lines for someone to ring you up. I just grab and go. There is no gas fill up station here or tire or car care center. There is a parking lot shared with Burlington Coat Factory. Very safe. Security tow truck cruising around.

They said "perfect," then asked if I wanted a receipt. I said no, but asked where my penny was. They didn't seem to hear me and handed me a receipt anyway, so I asked again about the penny. That's when they told me they don't give pennies back anymore because the penny has been retired. Part of me wanted to say something in the moment, but I decided it wasn't worth my energy, so I just took the receipt and left. But here's what actually stayed with me: the claim that the penny is "retired" is not a neutral fact about the world, it's a policy decision dressed up as an inevitability. I had two pennies sitting in my own wallet at that exact moment. The coin is not out of circulation. What's happened is that this business has unilaterally decided it will no longer circulate that value back to me, while still using it to calculate what I owe. The penny lives on the input side of the transaction and disappears on the output side. That asymmetry doesn't eliminate a cent of value, it just relocates it, quietly, from my pocket to theirs, one transaction at a time. That's the part that bothers me more than the cent itself. A single penny is nothing. But "nothing" multiplied across every cash customer, every day, indefinitely, is not nothing, it's a small, steady transfer of value made possible by asserting a currency is obsolete only when obsolescence is convenient for the business collecting it. This is the same structure as wage theft, just moved from the paycheck to the register. Wage theft rarely happens as one dramatic act, it happens as minutes shaved off a shift, breaks not paid out, overtime rounded down, each instance too small to fight over, each instance completely legal-sounding in the moment it's explained to you. The penny works the same way. No one is going to war over one cent. That's exactly why it works as a method, not because it's a big theft but because it's designed to be too small to ever be worth contesting, while still being collected reliably enough to add up on the business's side of the ledger. If you're going to accept cash, either make correct change or charge whole-dollar amounts. Don't call a coin obsolete only when it's time to hand it to me. And don't mistake my decision not to make a scene over one cent for the transaction actually being fair. It's exactly that reasoning, that no one individual instance is worth contesting, that's supposed to make this kind of taking invisible.
