Very reliable barbershop. Whether you get a haircut from Val, Igor, or Elliot, you will be in good hands. When I moved from Astoria to Rego Park, I had problems finding a reliable barber. These days, I will still travel from Rego Park to Astoria just for a haircut because I cannot find a barber that offers the same quality cut for the price. Even if I lived in New Jersey or Long Island, I'd still probably make the journey to Val's. I had Igor cut my hair before I got married to my wife. That's how much I trust these guys. The other reason I come to Val's is because of the barbershop banter. Conversations with Igor and Val are often hilarious with no topic left untouched. I'm surprised by the other review about not being greeted or acknowledged. After a few visits, you'll become one of their "regulars." I walk in and sit down on a late Saturday afternoon. The "guy" conversation goes: Yeah, I tried penis enlargement pills, it makes it bigger not longer For girth? Girth? Yeah it makes it thicker Friggin Queens! I can't believe I have relatives from Queens. So, I walk into Val's and a bunch of Queens guys, sitting around talking about nonsense. There are two barbers and, are you ready for this? She's a woman! You have all these Queens a-holes talking about junk in front of a woman. Is that classy for Queens?? The guys are all waiting for the dude with the small junk. The woman barber offers me the seat when it frees up. I explain how I want my cut and she asks me, what number do I want. What the eff.... That means she's gonna use the clippers for the sides. I tell her just cut it short on the sides. Small junk dude says to me: I expected you to have a thick Greek accent. (Again with the thickness???) Yeah, I get that all the time. I have a Greek look. If I'm in Brooklyn, I have that John Gotti Jr. look. My Grandmother is Greek So the woman barber and I are talking. she from Brighton Beach! I tell her a few Brooklyn pizza places I like, she seems like a nice person. She gave me an average cut. I'm livid. I called to ask if they did women's undercuts. The woman on the phone assured me they did. I go in, and Eugene looks lost as to how to do it. I asked him several times if he could and be continuously assured me he could. He starts cutting and I don't think anything of it. When he's done, he shadily won't hold the mirror straight so I can see. I was in a rush so I left. When I get home, I saw that he cut a HUGE CHUNK of hair outside of where he should have. I'm not even mad that he made a mistake, or he did something he didn't know how to do. I'm mad that he lied and tried to hide it from me. It's so disrespectful and I'm really upset. I went in and got a cut from Elliott. Seemed like a decent guy, not much of talker but still has a decent conversation with you. He has 20 years of experience cutting hair so that definitely adds a lot to his portfolio. I am very peculiar about my haircuts, so I gave him a lot of instructions and showed him a couple pictures. Asked him a lot of advices also and although on many he said it was my preference on some he actually gave me his expert opinion. I think for a first time visit I was genuinely impressed. This has definitely been first time for me that I went to barber for the first time and I came out with a hairstyle I genuinely thought I looked good in. Igor is like an old, no BS, but just enough BS if you know what I mean, barber who will get you through the ritual of hair cutting with ease and comfort and do a damned good job. I don't need to go to Supercuts or the random places near my job, I can rest easy that Val's Barbershop is going to do the job right, do it affordably, and do it not too far from my place. We used to live right around the corner from Vals and my son wanted to stop in to get his hair cut so bad. We would often see one of the barbers, Igor, and would always say hi. After finding out my son's friend went to him, we had to go too! All of the guys there are awesome and friendly, but we only experienced Igor's barber skills, and my son loved him and the hair cuts. I just moved to Astoria from the D.C. area and have been in the hunt for a good haircut. I considered going into the city to an established chain just to get one after being scared off by the looks of most of the salons in the Astoria-Ditmars area, but I liked the feedback Val's was getting on Yelp and wanted to test it out. The place was small--three seats, if I'm remembering correctly--but was all the better because of it. It's like getting your hair cut in your own living room, eccentric decor and all. Nice big window. Lots of interesting foot traffic. TV on for the silent types. Igor did a great and careful job cutting my hair the way I like it, which is a fairly involved cool/hipster haircut for a 25 y/o male. He maintained the length while thinning out the bulk in a way that let the hair spike and swoop and soar like it needed to. $14 for all that, plus he was cool to chat up if you are young-ish and not terribly uptight. He's like the cool guy on your floor in college that'll cut your hair for $. Will probably become a regular. It is by Sal, Kris, and Charlie's, after all, so I'm suspecting a pretty regular every-fifth-Sunday routine. read more

I was born and raised in Astoria and am now 40 years old. Val and his staff have been cutting my hair for the last 15+ years and I do not go anywhere else. Good haircut, and the price was good. The place was a bit dirty, which typically I don't care about, but this was a bit of a stretch. The conversation between one of the barbers and the customer was all about drugs and sex, and even though I was a couple of chairs away, it was impossible to ignore. Overall, it's fine.
