The challenge with this place is telling both Nikos and Tasoula what you want. If it's a fo-hawk, get out, those are done. The standby of a fade, shave, etc is where they excel. The only bad haircuts I've had is when I didn't ask for it to be cut shorter. You're not getting a hair stylist or artist, but a barber - a good old-fashioned friendly barber. Dudes should only go here. What's great about this place isn't so much the solid haircuts, but it's the people, the connection you get with this family business. On the weekends their relatives come in, get a hair cut or bring their kids in. These types of business are what made Astoria what it is. The newest tequila bar was cool for a Friday, but overdone on a Monday. 20 years strong and they may not be the best cut in the world, but at $11 I'm expecting exactly what I ask for, and that's what I get. The best part of getting a haircut here is the speed - literally 10-15 minutes and that I'm always offered a piece of candy. You will then go on vacation for a month or so and will then only do haircuts in a new location once a week if you stop by the barbershop you'll see the number and what you need to call and I'll try my best to post the picture my wife took. I've been going to Val since he took over George at the same location when he retired so over 40 years at this location to be honest 46 it would have been 47 in July.

The other reason I come to Val's is because of the barbershop banter. Conversations with Igor and Val are often hilarious with no topic left untouched. I'm surprised by the other review about not being greeted or acknowledged. After a few visits, you'll become one of their "regulars." This is not one of those places that will roll out a red carpet for you (this is Astoria not the Upper West Side), but you will definitely leave with some laughs and a first-class hair cut.
