I am hoping that Value Village reads this review. Today I was at the Silver Springs unit, yesterday at Shawnessy and North East Calgary the day before. They have some outstanding goods and the prices are excellent. My complaint is that I am old-fashioned and pay by cash. I am hopeful that a number of poor Calgarians shop at Value Village and also pay by cash. Why is it so difficult to pay by cash? Most of the times the machines won't take cash. Today the self-serve had one or two customers while those of us paying by cash had to wait in a long lineup that took 20+ minutes. It is so frustrating. read more

Visiting family for vacation, my cousin and I decided to visit this place since she likes to see what she can find here. I had a blast rummaging through all the clothing, and I ended up picking up this jersey. I also found an instant camera, but I'm docking two stars because it was missing a part--the charger and battery. If you buy electronics (or anything here really), beware. I ended up buying a charger and battery online which pretty much ended up costing as much as what's listed on eBay in USD. Otherwise, not a bad place to burn time and have fun. told on entering the store that members receive 40% discount on clothing today. my daughter (also a member) and I shopped for over an hour and a half. Only 1 cash out of 3 working so waited in line only to be told that the discount only applied when you showed the email coupon that members had been sent. neither my daughter or myself had received this email but I thought that being a member on file would be good enough - I was denied the discount. SO frustrating! When I tried to make a formal complaint online I was directed to give my credit card info!!! Are they kidding?! Disrespectful, disgusting treatment of a many years member. Don't tell people the V discount is for members when that is not honoured at the till. accept formal complaints respectfully-don't jack your customers around. read more

When I need clothes, this is the place I go. I make a day of shopping at Value Village locations across Calgary at all 4 locations in fact. Over the years I have noticed how expensive clothing has gotten. You have to know your prices, there are some items that are priced more there then new in a department store. I have on occasion found clothes that have never been worn with the original sale tags on them and then Value Village price tag. If you are on a budget and need clothes you may want to checkout Value Village. Very organized within the store, so you'll be able to quickly find what you are looking for. 3 star is due to the over price for used clothing. read more

Prices are up and dressing rooms are gone. Folks are trying on clothes in the aisles. You really have to be a smart shopper at Value Village as many items are now an absolute rip off for being USED. Although I visit these stores regularly, I purchase rarely. Maybe one purchase in ten visits. Value Village USED to be my go to place for pretty much everything.....kitchen stuff to clothes for all occasions. They used to realize they were catering to the lower plus class and priced their wares accordingly. Whom ever is doing the pricing now needs a reality check. You are selling second hand items for crying out loud!! Today I came across a cast iron frying pan - $49.99 - are you kidding me? Brand new is CHEAPER!! I can find comparable pricing at Winners. And I'm getting brand new. I find I rarely think of value Village first anymore. I also donate now to Good Will. Shame you guys are out doing yourselves. read more

Value Village: home of the left over second hand clothes. Charities sell clothes to the Village by WEIGHT, and then the village tosses anything obviously stained or torn and shelves the rest. The result is a store full of stuff, much of it old, unfashionable, ugly. The seasoned vintage shopper will find a small heaven here. Everything is very cheap, although recently I noticed they priced up some of the nicer brands. Even then, it is very cheap. I have a friend who can walk in here and walk out half an hour later with an armful of great clothes. She personifies adorable indie style, and she is tiny and can alter clothes. I, on the other hand, am none of those things. I hate going to value village because I'm impatient and it smells a little and is just not my kind of place. I need to work SO hard to find anything decent. I'm not a big fan of this place for anything I will use on a regular basis. It is first stop for costumey and disposable items. My friend worked here, and he found tons of stuff that he loved. Couches, furniture, weird cochkeys. He totally loved the village. I think it is a case of to each their own. read more

I decided to write a review after shopping here the other day even after being warned about the horrible customer service at this location. I picked up a couple outfits for my puppy and asked the cashier if I could exchange if they did not fit. He said yes no problem as long as it is within the time frame allotted. I took them home, they did not fit so took back with my receipt within a week. I went up to the till with a cart full of more stuff, gave the cashier my receipt and said intended to return these. She said I cannot return but I can exchange so I said no problem how do I do that as there were no more puppy clothes available at the time? As she was about to answer this rude girl came straight over to me and said I was not allowed to exchange. I tried to explain to her what her previous employee told me she said she has trained her staff perfectly and that I was making that up just to get my money back. Ya that makes sense since I had about $50 worth of stuff I was also buying. She then proceeded to say that I should read my receipt and if I didn't like it I shouldn't shop there. Not only will I or anyone I tell shop there but the thousands of dollars in donations I drop off there every year will now go to the Thrift store downtown who's staff is amazing! Oh, and one more thing...there is nothing on the receipts that specify animal clothing or baby clothing not bring allowed to be exchanged that is just a verbal rule she told me about that day so yes I did read my receipt. I've been in customer service for over 30 years and I have never come across a supervisor so blatantly ignorant as her. In my opinion value village needs to re evaluate who they have representing them. This location has been open for approx. A year and already has more negative reviews to do with customer service than other stores who have been open for years, that should say something! Thoroughly dissapointed read more

I always have an absolute blast in here.... I was in here looking for items to throw together a gypsy costume for a fundraising event that I was working, and what ended up happening was that I was mostly browsing for myself. It is unbelievable to me how much this store has 'cleaned up". I remember 10 years ago walking into thrift stores, they were not a place you wanted to be. Now, walking into value village, it is organized, well laid out, and there are all types of people in there. This is no longer a place to shop for only people with fixed incomes - this is a place for any shopper that likes to find a bargain. My gypsy costuome ended up coming together without value village's help, but I did buy a wicked pair of boots for work for only $10. Serioiusly, you can't beat that! read more

In the mood for a bargain and have a few hours to spare? This has been my most successful Value Village spot to visit so far, and I usually come away with at least a few things that I really like. Plus, if you bring by clothes to donate before you head inside, you can take them to the Donation Centre around the back (NE corner) and they'll give you a discount voucher to use. From what I could tell, you get a 5% discount per bag of clothes donated. Same as the other stores, the clothes are sorted by gender, clothing type and size. I recommend picking a few sections that you want to hit and focus on those, because you'll get the most out of your visit if you take the time to flick through each item on the rack. Now, onto the change rooms. The change rooms are in the far right corner as you first walk in, with maybe eight or so change rooms (one of them has disabled access). Unlike some of the other stores, there's a six garment limit that you can take with you into the change room. As someone that piles my trolley up full of clothes, this is a bit frustrating but will they let you leave your trolley nearby and 'reserve' your change room as you duck in and out with each round of six items. However, unsuspecting people waiting in the queue will try and take your change room each time and probably get (loudly) frustrated with the system. If you can, try not to bring any backpacks or other bags in with you. When I was on crutches and had a backpack (as the only way to carry anything) they still insisted that I leave my bag outside, but ended up relenting that I could leave this behind one of their (unmanned) counters. Trips here pretty much mandate a rousing chorus of 'Thrift Shop' on the drive back home. I don't love it as much as the North one, but I always enjoy going here with my best friend to look for household items - it does a really stand up job when it comes to kitchenware. Clothing is a bit hit and miss (and quiet disorganized) and the changing rooms are always pretty filthy, but you can find some real gems occasionally. The records section is great - we've found some amazing buys in there. It's a bit on the high side for thrift store prices (especially the clothes), but you can usually get some stellar deals with the $20 in your pocket. I'm still looking for a big-ass coat though ;) read more

Parking lot is a mess! You can only get one car through at a time so dont bother going at busy times. Plus its a shared lot with the other businesses in the area, which also can make it hard to find a spot. I also found this store to be quiet messy and disorganized compared to the north location. Im not a big fan of these kinda stores, although they do have their moments. read more

I was super surprised at the selection of Halloween costumes and supplies they have. I went in expecting not to find much, but was shocked at the wide variety they have. I left the store with everything I needed! One worker lady was the cutest! She was dressed as a clown, make-up and everything! Don't judge me, but I'm afraid of clowns... I still found this lady so adorable! Perhaps Value Village is better for other things, besides clothes. I left the other day extremely satisfied. Value Village (Saver's in the US) is a for profit company. I wish I'd thought of this business model. All of their inventory is donated then they mark it up to ridiculously high prices. It's a thrift store I will no longer purchase from. Do your own research. Do you really want to give your money to a 'for profit' American company and pay outrageous prices for used goods? I sure don't. The least they could do is keep prices reasonable but I think they've gotten quite greedy. There are lots of great non profit thrift stores to choose from. Value Village is the superstore of second hand clothing. If you're looking for trendy vintage clothing fast then Value Village probably isn't the place to look. But, if you're willing to invest some time into the hunt then it can definitely pay off . Don't expect to pop in and out with an armload of quality purchases; take your time, try departments you wouldn't expect and try things on. The one time of year I strongly suggest heading down to Value Village is Halloween. At Halloween they carry both new and used costumes along with many of the necessary spooky accessories at bargain prices. read more

The prices are all over the map - I have found (brand new with tags) Kate Spade/Tory Burch items for $15, and worn out Forever 21 tank tops for $8 (original retail price: $2.99). Sometimes it's laughably ridiculous, and sometimes I find an absolute steal and want to run home screaming "Star the car!" like the Ikea commercial (i.e. brand new AG skinnies priced at $8 (retail: $320)). The frequent sales make the high prices more bearable, but there's no question that prices have been steadily creeping up over the past two years. Kudos to the ladies who put out new items at this location - they are endlessly patient and pleasant with often rude shoppers, who jump on the rolling racks of new items and insist on going through them one by one veeeerrrryyyy sloooooowlyyyyy. read more

They are taking themselves way too seriously especially considering that all their things are DONATED. They seem to forget that they sell USED things. Many times we find prices that are higher than if you bought them brand new. We are yet to find a friendly or at least approachable employee there. I feel conflicted about Value Village. On the one hand, they are nowhere near as charitable as their marketing would have customers believe. It's really disingenuous and pretty unethical for them to state that they give so much to charitable causes when if you actually read up on their business model, they clearly do not. In addition, they are incredibly overpriced (they get all their stock for free, people!) and the prices seem to be increasing all the time. The pricing of books is especially absurd. But on the other hand, I have found a few gems there that gave me that nice buzz one gets when getting a bargain on something awesome. So I go check it out once in awhile but with my eyes wide open concerning what they're doing there. read more

I was at Value Village on Fri and made a complaint to the management regarding their prices being way to high and that some of items are even more expensive then when they were bought new. (items that are dirty and used) This was also one of my favourite shops and I won't be going there anymore and I wont be donating to them either, for they are ripping people off especially the poor. read more

Now I have been thrift shopping for as long as I even remember due to my Mum taking me with her when I was very young, so I like to think I have seen my fare share of thrift stores in my lifetime. Being from Australia and now living in Canada, I am not new to the whole Value Village (Savers in Australia) franchise, and have been shopping with them for many many years. BUT I feel that lately, they have been getting a bit too pricey for my liking. I used to spend hours in each location, scrounging the racks and shelves and leaving with bags and bags full. Recently, I feel like I see things I like and the prices will put me off and I end up only getting one or two things if anything at all. The clothes are especially too expensive lately, I don't mind paying $5 or $7 for a top but lately I have seen prices averaging $8 to $12, which is a bit too much in my opinion. I find that I have been buying more books than anything as they are usually around $5 each, which isn't too bad if they are in good condition. I just find the clothes are a bit to expensive lately, which is unfortunate because I miss the days of leaving with huge bags full of stuff like I used to. I will still visit regularly because I love the thrill of the hunt and browsing seems to relax me in Value Village but I just wish I could get more bang for my buck! read more

The SE location seems smaller than the NE one, however, it is pretty big and airy (slightly smelly too). I am not interested in clothes as much, and my last trip ended up with a bag full of books- they have a great selection- old and new titles, at great prices. I also found a beautiful Indian scarf (in the 'Bath and Sewing' section)- just perfect for my DIY projects, for only 5$ (online price: 18-20$). And a brand new, beautifully crafted Indian sari for 9$ - a collection piece. I think the NE location has more furniture/collectibles, but I will defo return to this location (I agree, not on the weekend..) read more

Went for a Job Interview, at Store Opening Time at around 9:00 AM, and there was a guy dressed like he came from a Biker Bar in a jean vest told me about his double hernia issue, was from London, and his boss would not let him have time off. Suggestion to Biker Bar Looking Guy why don't you use your Vacation Time, as I had to use my One-Week Vacation Time for my Out-patient Out-the-same-day operation, therefore, that was supposed to be my vacation and the Dr. wanted me to take 2-weeks off and I did not want to waste 2-weeks of my Hard Earned Vacation Time for my issue, so quit telling strangers about your private issue and see if you have Vacation Time like the rest of us do and sacrifice. My family moved many times and donated loads of clothes and things to Value Village, too and I would suggest to the Managers to at least send a Thank You Note back to people after they travel to you for a Job Interview. The thing is, I think it is 'Who You Know', but we were always decent and respected the fundraising efforts and I think I am good enough to be hired as my previous positions were truthfully Long-Term Jobs, but the economy changed here so much. So if you see Biker Bar Guy, let him know that people sacrifice their Vacation Time if their company does not have benefits for Operation-Out-Patient-Recovery-Time Benefits. read more

I purchased a Scrub top and scrub pants. They were marked large so i bought them home i removed the tags to wash the clothing but kept the tags. I put them on to go to work and they were really tight, here they were both extra small, I tried to return them for just an exchange because i did not have a receipt but they would not even let me exchange them although they had the wrong size marked on them(i even gave them the Large tags that had been on them) I was not happy with the service i received from the manager!!! I would suggest you really check original tags on their clothes( Which i found don't always have original tags so you don't even know if they have the size right) but that doesn't matter cause i found a lots of the scrub uniforms that they marked large and X-Large are actually small and medium. So check tags,try clothes on and keep tags and receipts if you want to return anything! read more
