Wifey and I had to cancel a vacation in December and we decided the best way to drown our sorrows was to find cheese and meat from the locations we were going to visit. We found Van Hook here on Yelp and decided to give them a try. Neither of us have gone to specialty cheese shop like this so we were a little overwhelmed at first, until the staff behind the counter started helping us. We explained what we were looking for and they were very helpful. We ended up walking out with five kinds of cheese and three kinds of meats. When we got home we paired them with a couple wines and voilà! Returned today to make a cheese platter. The staff were very knowledgeable about the cheese and meat selection and suggested some great varieties. If you don't know a lot about cheese they can "show you the ropes". What I like about cheese shops is you can get small amounts of lots of cheeses to try things out. They also have so many things to pair the cheese with such as jams, honey, chocolate, coffee, olive oils. They have a free parking lot for shoppers, which is rare in this area! read more

This is a great little gem in Montclair and bonus it has parking (which a lot of places don't have). I've gotten a two charcuterrie boards for myself and the other day I tried one of their grilled cheese sandwiches. Ordering the boards is super easy, you just tell them what you like, pay and they build you a little masterpiece. Each time I have picked them up the were ready for me. I didn't have to wait at all. For the sandwich, I got the classic with prosciutto and it was the best grilled cheese sandwich I have ever had. Plus the staff is super nice. What more could someone want? read more

Consider me Van "hooked." This much needed, long awaited little piece of cheese heaven opened a little over a week ago. I have already been back four, that's right four times. The phenomenal selection of cheeses is Murray's-worthy, and the fact that this cheese-lover's paradise is just under a mile from where I now live, means I will be playing even more Pickleball, and may even start jogging again. The selection of meats, chips and other delectable items is also terrific, but the cheeses are definitely the star of the show. I have never been much of a Feta fan, but the Feta dip has made me a bit of a convert. The pimento spread is far and away the best I've had. Carl, the owner, and extremely welcoming host is generous not only with his samples, but with his wealth of knowledge. I have only lived in Montclair for a little over six months.
