Prices are unbeatable, a 7in sandwich is between $6-$8 which is perfect for lunch as well as the hot food also. I used to love this place, but now I'm not going back. This is the second time they messed up one of my orders, the last time I didn't even make any issue about it, but this time I asked for a sausage and pepper parm sub with no onions, and the reason I asked for no onions is because I'm allergic to onions. So of course I didn't find out that they messed up the order until I got all the way to Belleville to eat it. So I called them to complain and they said, "Sorry, hopefully next time, what can I tell you?"?! You can make good on it is what you can do, so now I'm going to another option instead. My family and I are repeat customers. We go to this place solely for their weekly rotation of hot meals for takeout. Specifically the beef stew on Wednesdays! I can stretch it into a couple meals by adding pasta and a bit more sauce, but it's delicious on its own too. Yelp pointed me in Luigi's direction and as usual: Yelp'ed helped. I'm a poet and didn't even know it! (Okay, I'll stop now.) Walk in. The place is immaculate and smells divine. I see some European football on the TV behind the counter and I think I found my new favorite butcher shop. I get to ordering and encounter my first speed bump: the cranky worker. Yeah, maybe having to work on a Saturday in the summer isn't ideal but I don't need the 'tude - I have enough of it at home with my kids. Second speed bump discovered when I got home: the bag of taralles (easily my all-time fave Italian snack) I picked up were stale. You think they can chip a tooth when they're still fresh?! But you know what... everything else was so seriously scrumptious that I need to overlook the hiccups. Breaded chicken cutlets: awesome. Hot sausage: (no place can really compete with Garruto's in Nutley) really impressed with a great kick. Steak: skirt? hanger? It wasn't labeled and me and Cranky-Counter-Guy didn't seem to be on the same page but it was absolutely delicious. Second visit: had a much more welcoming worker helping me out, the various goodies this time around (cold cuts, broccoli rabe, etc.) were still top-notch, but those damn taralles? I feel like this place is sort of like a gourmet deli, but with a butcher shop or old school feel. Gave Luigi a deer to butcher after shining it myself and after specifying what I want small portions labeled and wrapped all I got was huge 12 pound pieces and hair all over the meat wrapped and frozen so I don't see it till I get home and the sausages were all one looooong piece instead of links and stashed in a plastic bag. I hate writing a bad review, especially about a local business. Be careful of ordering sandwiches here. I watched a worker hold a large cut of red meat in his bare hand and then proceed to make a sandwich without washing his hands or wearing gloves. That is unacceptable and really disgusting.
