The station is just your ordinary Muni station. But the surroundings, especially in front of or the side of the All-Star Cafe is surrounded with druggies, depending what time you're there. Sometimes they hang out in the station or they're on the trains and look, smell, or are horrendous. San Francisco has really let itself go. Police literally drive right by people doing drugs and do nothing about it. Maybe it's because it's just a catch and release thing but San Francisco definitely needs to get their act together. read more

Im out of town and wish South Texas had public transportation like this. Yes every city has its homeless areas, where there's graffiti and doesn't look real clean.. but people... you don't know how lucky you are to have low cost transportation. And people still steal by getting on and not paying for the bus. read more

Van Ness Station - Waiting on the train - Train Stations Near Me - San Francisco, California

Grading on a scale. This station is immaculate palace compared to the Civic Center BART station.

Once you live in the city awhile, or heck, you visit for a few days, you learn that everything from 6th to where the Castro starts along Market is not the most clean or ship shape of places. It's not quite the Tenderloin because it's Market, but in certain places the TL almost bleeds over onto it. The Van Ness station is one of these places. The All-Star Market above is a haven for homeless, bums, and panhandlers alike and the Walgreens on the corner fosters no public bathroom and showcases it's trust having all their wares locked up or tied down. The station itself is always dirty, poorly lit and smells strongly of grease. There's rarely even an agent on duty beyond the times when he hassles tourists who've lost their way or people with paper transfers. It's usually deserted in the hallways, beyond the stray piece of litter and the trains tend to never run on time because it's the underground. A fact made worse because Van Ness is the first underground station not to have BART, so one can't even jump on something else when it breaks down, but instead are forced to wait or walk up/bus the several blocks to Civic Center. It's a gross station, not having the fashion of Castro or the cleanliness of BART to salvage it. It needs a spit shine. Heavily minus the spit. read more

It's smelly but it gets you to the heart of the city if you're heading to city hall. If you are heading outbound during rush hour, van ness is where it would be most crowded so watch out for that or catch the second it possible. read more

As a self-proclaimed Urban Hiker, I saw this morning as a great opportunity to hop off the Muni at the Castro and hike along Market to the Embarcadero. I gave myself plenty of time, since I don't begin work until 9-ish. Urban Hiking Prep 101: 1) Place suit jacket in hi-lighter stained, light blue Sideout backpack (actually donated for an inner-city school supply project I'm working on). 2) Replace work shoes with sparkling white, brand-new tennies (they, like their owner, haven't seen much action). 3) Since loss of suit jacket has left bright red, slightly low-cut work shirt visible, cover thyself with black boa-like winter scarf. 4) Braid hair into two braids, to deter flyaways and add artsy flair. Now prepared, I began my urban hike. Everything was fine until I approached a sketchy section of market between Van Ness and Civic Center. Apparently, my low-cut bright red top (not the best idea for an urban hike), boa scarf, tennies and Mervyn's backpack made me resemble a prostitute heading home for the morning after a productive night. Good to know. At least, this is the only justification I am able to come up with regarding why the homeless A-holes said such dirty, dirty things to me. Things I learned along the way: 1) Watch out for buckets of water being tossed on the sidewalk. 2) Those little boys raising money for their basketball team are part of a scam. (So disappointed...) 3) The Color Purple runs at The Orpheum until the beginning of December. 4) If a guy reaches in his pocket and says he has a present for you, he is LYING. RUN. Being that the station is a block from my house I use it frequently and have never been bothered by disrepair as they fix things promptly, there are no panhandling people or homeless in the station both the paid side and the free side, there's even the lack of open drug use like other stations have to deal with. I give the station a four if five stars because the service inbound and outbound is spotty at best with lengthy wait times in both directions! read more

If you're on the outbound N or J, this is the last subterranean station before you exit the subway behind the Safeway at Church and Duboce. The N will continue up Duboce, through a mile-long tunnel under Buena Vista Park, then continue on to Cole Valley on Carl, UCSF on Irving, the Inner Sunset, Outer Sunset, then the beach. Anywhere along this line after UCSF you can deboard to check out Golden Gate Park, only one to two blocks to the north. Around 7th is cool if you want to walk over to the Conservatory of Flowers. The J will hang a left on Church and cross Market, heading south on Church through Dolores Park and into Noe Valley, then Glen Park. This is a very scenic ride. If you're on any of the Martin Luther King trains (the M, L, or K are the ones that remain in the subway), the train will continue through to Castro Station, the Twin Peaks tunnel, Forest Hill Station, then West Portal where they exit the subway to follow their respective surface routes. If you're getting off here at Van Ness, you must be going to the opera, the symphony, City Hall, CSAA (AAA), any of the antique stores on Market Street, Goodwill at Van Ness and Mission, or San Francisco Honda, because you're completely grossed out by this station, and want to get yourself a hybrid. No, it's not that bad. I'm only kidding. Just don't actually touch anything in the station with your bare hands. read more

I was a BART regular before I ever rode the Muni Metro underground. So the first time I took the N-Judah underground, I was completely shocked that there was a station at Van Ness. I had walked right past this part of Van Ness many times, and I had never seen signs for the station. Sure enough, the next time I was riding the bus past this intersection, I saw the tiny little Muni sign and just wondered. I've since actually gotten on to the Metro at this station, and I must say that it's completely useless. It's not far enough away from the Civic Center station to make it worth it. If you need to get to Van Ness, get off at Civic Center and walk two blocks. Sadly, all of us on the N-Judah have to wait as the train stops at the Van Ness station and either takes on more passengers than it can handle or doesn't take on any. I'm all about Muni efficiency, and this station was a dumb idea from the start. It gets a bonus star because it's relatively clean and safe. read more

I typically either take BART (more expensive) or drive my scooter around town. Today I took the J from Glen Park to Van Ness just because I thought I could use a change of pace. Whoa, whoa, whoa...other street car lines are much nicer. The Van Ness station is the pits! Granted it isn't the best location, but they need to step things up a notch... If I'm going anywhere near Van Ness again, BART it will be. read more

What can be said about Muni that cannot be said about a typewriter: old, slow and frustrating.

This station is the only one of it's kind (design-wise) in the Muni network. It's also the station most likely to confuse you if you're in a rush and running down stairs to catch the train. read more

Muni gets you where you need to go. That is, if you are willing to put up with the train's odd timings, overstuffed people at rush hour, and sometimes lack of cleanliness. Just remember to use Purell after touching the bars! read more

A clean, well-lit station. It was spotless at 7 pm on a Saturday. And lucky me, my train was running 2, 2 minutes apart. So I went on the empty one! I am often energized by riding public transport, especially when there is room to breathe! You get to sit back and marvel at the people, the possibilities, and the city. read more
