Did I wake up in 1985??

Coziest muni there is. So excited to be home everyday. For reals, seen this go up yesterday and it raises questions?

I frequently use BART & MUNI to navigate the Bay Area. The MUNI has grown on me as it is sometimes late yet often not & gets me to where I want to go. The Castro MUNI station is clean & gets you right into the heart of the Castro. The most endearing quality of this MUNI station is the black & white photos paying homage to the patron saint of the Castro none other then Harvey Milk. One particularly poignant photograph is of the street flyer used to commemorate Harvey Milk's assassination as 40,000 people gathered w/ candles across the entire length of Market St marching somberly from the Castro to City Hall to pay honor Harvey Milk.

This is the only Muni station with a green belt on Market St., San Francisco, CA. Approved by the planning department in 1973, this significant site was designed and built during Harvey Milk's last year's of his life. Milk was a transit advocate and the station needs to be preserved, not demolished and replaced.

Tired of seeing all these people bring their dogs and cats on MUNI. What about the people who are allergic to your pets?? And worst of all MUNI doesn't do a thing about it.

Using the BART Trip Planner I found the route there via the N Judah. I wanted to be on the Ocean Beach train. Inside the Powell Street Station, the signage confused me at first. "Outbound or Inbound?" I sheepishly asked the agent for directions. "Which way is it to the Ocean?" The agent snickered, "There's two oceans. Where do you want to go?" Fine, Outbound. Actually it didn't matter. At the platform I saw the Ocean Beach or Ball Park directions. Got it! Easy to pay the fare using my Clipper Card and I was going in the right direction. A two train car stopped and I'm on my way. I knew to get off at Irving St and 9th. The signage once again confused me. Judah and 9th is the stop listed. On this particular train, I couldn't here the operator announce the stops. Good thing I know a bit about The City and got off at the right stop. My destination was 1/2 mile away so I walked. The ride didn't take very long and it was a fun ride a glimpse of local folks and flavor. The return ride was uneventful and I proudly felt new confidence. I love public transportation and the N Judah works for me!

I've ridden BART plenty of times before. Usually it's crowded, sometimes a little grimy, but it gets the job done. This time, though, I was honestly surprised. The SF International Airport station felt clean, organized, and surprisingly calm. Maybe was because it was Saturday? Who knows. Either way, the whole ride felt easy and peaceful -- a really nice way to head home after an emotional airport goodbye.

Today, I still like stopping here whenever I visit the city. It's not cheap riding from San Jose/Milpitas to this station $10 one way now. I can still remember old times when riding only cost a few bucks. Powell BART station connects riders to all sorts of trains/muni destinations. Public restrooms are always available and staffs do their jobs well. You will see lots of foreign visitors and often hear people speaking in French, Spanish, German, etc. This is one of San Francisco's best stop. It's unfortunate that SF Westfield Shopping Center lost its businesses due to high crimes, high cost of doing business here, and other city regulations. This BART station really had it all years ago, especially when it was easily accessible after stopping here and walking distance to the food court and retail stores. I think Powell Station vibes are still positive for commuters. Advertisements are everywhere. This BART station still feels safe in public and it does feel like home of San Francisco center. To be fair, the fares are decent and when it works, it's the best way to get around. However, the consistency just isn't there. Almost every day there is a new 'issue' or delay. I've approached station agents for help only to feel like I'm 'interrupting' their personal phone time or chats with colleagues. A little professional courtesy would go a long way. So only one bus to catch on Haight Street at Divisadero. And since the already truncated 21's route was so pathetically short and not useful since they messed with it after COVID, what's the point of this now? And then the bus line actually came, and it's actually ridiculously convenient for me, much more convenient than the old 6 used to be. I still have my issues with it. The main one is for my Hayes Street neighbors who live west of Masonic Avenue. How do they catch the bus now? They either have to walk all the way to Stanyan Street and wait forever for a not terribly useful 33-Ashbury/18th Street, or they have to walk uphill to the 5-Fulton. That's poor planning, especially for people with limited mobility who have trouble traversing steep hills. The entire point of a bus on Hayes Street is that between Stanyan and Scott Streets, it's more or less flat--or at least as flat as a half-mile in San Francisco can realistically be. But another thing happened when they killed my line and moved the 6 over to my street; I can now ride the bus almost doorstep to doorstep both to the Upper Haight and to my brother's house. That has been super useful to me--maybe even too useful, because when I'm lazy, I sometimes take the bus to Free Gold Watch instead of doing my normal walk through the Panhandle, which is better for my health, although sometimes not for my bottomless irritation with my fellow San Franciscans. I still want to rage against the dying of the light--the light in this case being a familiar old bus line--but I would be lying if I said that this change hasn't been useful to me personally. Muni could actually solve most of this problem by having either the 6 or the 7 stay on Stanyan and then turn onto Hayes (which ends at Stanyan) and stay on that street until it turns wherever Downtown. But that would make too much sense, and the SFMTA is too busy spending its money painting huge red zones all over the city to do what's right for local bus riders and drivers alike. This should be a three-star review, but the added convenience is worth at least a Yelp star.
