We told her we were planning a picnic for the next day and not only did she tell us about Grandville Island and it's amazing market, she handwrote us a shopping list on what items to get for an amazing picnic(it was delish). - The food was awesome. We visited four places and each was pretty good. My favorite was the Meat and Bread sandwich. As someone who is trying to give up pork (and failing miserably) I just want to point out that two our of the four places had pork dishes, so if you have dietary needs/preference, let them know ahead of time so they can pick items to accommodate you (they partner with 8 different restaurants so there are plenty of food options). I also loved that many of the restaurants they choose partner with local farms. - My hubbie and I were lucky that we had an awesome group and everyone was super friendly and lovely. The bad: None! Final verdict: Will try to downtown when (not if) I return to Vancouver. read more

I love doing food tours when I'm in a new city as they offer me an opportunity to sample (presumably) some of the best cuisine that the area has to offer. Carlos, the owner, was nice enough to let a friend and me join the Gastown tour at the last minute. We met our guide, Cassandra, as well as the other two people on the tour at the Waterfront train station. Our first stop - Rogue Kitchen and Bar - was at the station and then we walked several blocks down to "Blood Alley" for a "wine and cheese" tasting at Salt. That was followed by Caribbean cuisine at Calabash, and finally, modern Chinese food at Bambuddah. All of the tastings were paired with alcoholic beverages, or non-alcoholic drinks upon request. 1. Rogue Kitchen and Bar 3 local beers - red truck lager, fat tug IPA, and blue buck pale ale Fried Brussels sprouts Bang bang chicken Lobster mac and cheese 2. Salt tasting room Three wines or specialty fizzes (orange, guava, and black currant) Goat cheese, organic honey, sicilian salami, dried cherries, corned beef, and mustard. 3. Calabash Ginger beer, rum, nutmeg cocktail Chicken skewers, veggie/chicken/beef patties, plantain chips 4. Bambudda Tsui Hang which is a cold tea made with Budweiser syrup, iron buddha tea, and moondog bitters Chicken skin, duck bun and cherries, and rice pudding with banana puree, pineapples, and almonds. Although we had a nice time and great company, this tour wasn't the best value. It was very expensive - $105 CAD - as far as food tours go and there was little more to this 3-hour tour than just going from place to place to eat (and drink). Most tours include more information on the surrounding area, discussion (or tasting) of the local cuisine, and perhaps a chance to meet the chefs or to learn about the restaurants. Also, I think that the price should be cheaper for people who do not partake in the alcoholic offerings. So, -1 star for the value and -1 star for the guide. read more

If you consider yourself a serious foodie and you're traveling to Vancouver, you absolutely CANNOT pass this gem up. Like any traveler, I'm very weary of tourist traps - especially when it comes to restaurants. (Seriously, why waste my time, money, and most importantly - stomach space, on something that's just mediocre??) So the decision to take a food tour was pretty huge to me, especially considering the fact that I'd classify myself as someone who's pretty resourceful when it comes down to finding good places to eat while traveling. I took a Vancouver Food Tour back in May with a buddy of mine. We met Ms. Fury up at a Canada Line station and she took over from there!! Not only did she take us to some amazing places to eat, she also shared a lot about the lifestyle and culture of Vancouver with us. My favorite part of the tour was probably eating at Ms. Fury's favorite restaurant. The food was, of course, spot on and amazing. But to get the "local vibe" and meeting different bar tenders/restauranteurs/chefs as if I was a local was INCREDIBLE. No matter the amount of research, you simply cannot get this anywhere!! Sometimes I wish someone would do that for me where I'm from. I've done my fair share of traveling and I've come across some pretty memorable experiences in my life, I've got to say that Vancouver Food Tour is probably one of the best combined travel/food experiences I've had, EVER. Getting full portions (as opposed to tasting bites at other tours) of food (oh, and don't forget about the drinks!!!) at popular local restaurants while being treated like a regular?? This tour, the Gastown Tasting Tour, was $108. The tour consisted of 4 food items, getting less substantial as the tour progressed. The tour also involves drink pairings: a flight of 3 craft beers, a flight of 2wines/1 champagne, and 2 cocktails. Non-alcoholic alternatives are available. The tour runs on Tuesday and Wednesday at 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm and Thursday to Saturday at 4:00 - 7:00 pm. Our guide was very nice. She explained all the good we were eating and explained all the pairings. She actually had a degree in gastronomy so was very knowledgeable. She also knew the city's history and gave good recommendations on where to go after the tour. While she did share information with us, I felt the tour was more driven by participant questions than just herself expounding on things. I would have preferred more of a script in terms of the info disseminated. There was room in the tour to stop at certain locations and talk about history-which she did once in Blood Alley outside of a place called Salt we went to. I organized an event with VFT for work and we had a great time! We went on the Gastown Tasting Tour with a group of 14 people. Our host was Hanna who was very knowledgable of Gastown and even gave us suggestions on places to go after the tour. The only place we were not as excited about was Rogue since we work right next to the restaurant. The highlight was definitely Salt where we had a private area in the basement next to their wine cellar. The tour allowed for great team building because we switched places at each location. So we can interact with everyone throughout the evening. ...and sooo much food! Most of us were full by the third restaurant! read more

I did the Molson Brewery tour. Carlos was a great host. Despite there being an enormously annoying member of the main group he made every effort to make everyone welcome and to keep us involved. He kept his sense of humour when mine would have long since evaporated and proved to be a knowledgable guide. I totally recommend the tour - BUT PLEASE READ THE SMALL PRINT about the dress code. If I had one issue with how Carlos dealt with the tour it was not sticking t the code and going out of his way to accommodate those people who turned up incorrectly dressed. This delayed the departure significantly. He pleased 12 people and pissed off me but as tour guide I accept that is the correct ratio. read more

I was invited out by Vancouver Food Tour for their Gastown Craft Beer 'n Bites Tour. Tours, especially those in my own hometown, have never appealed to me for various reasons, but this one involved beer, food and Gastown..so it was hard to say no. We were told to meet up at a central location, Waterfront Station, where we would meet "Beer Nerd" Nicole Coetzee. She loves beer so much, that she's set on becoming BC's first female beer sommelier, having just finished the Cicerone certification examinations. Now that's serious dedication to this hoppy beverage. With a total of 3 venues, all of which I've patroned before but won't disclose for the tours sake, and a rotating cycle of beers on tap, this means that the tour itself is organic and changes seasonally. On our way to the second venue, we took a short walk along Water St. where Nicole even offered up tidbits of information about Gastown that not even I nor the other locals had known. Value for the money! For our last venue, it was a bit further out than what most people would categorize as Gastown, but it's very beer forward, with an extensive bottle list and a rotating tap list. Now speaking candidly, is this tour worth taking? Yes, for tourists, day visitors or cruise ship visitors to Vancouver, it's a nice way to spend a few hours in one of Vancouver's most beautiful neighbourhoods. It's also fun for a no brainer/no thinking stag or staggette, with the possibility of getting messy later on through the night. For locals, Nicole is filled to the brim with knowledge of beer, and will be an amazing and patient guide to those uninitiated with craft beer or even those that are slightly familiar with it, like myself. read more

Several months ago, I set up a food tour as a group activity for a company event. My experience from initial inquiry to planning to the event itself was outstanding! We went on the Taste of Gastown tour as the office was located near the neighbourhood and we had several colleagues in from out of town. At each of four stops, we had food paired with drinks: craft beer, then cocktails, sherry at one stop and last but certainly not least, BC wine. I worked with Melody to figure out the details and she was very understanding as we had to make changes in the number of guests and work with some food sensitivities and preferences. Procedures were clearly explained and documented throughout. Payment in full is done prior to the tour so you don't have to worry about gratuities and everyone can just enjoy the food, drinks and company. Our guide, Carlos, became a natural member of our group,mingling and providing information. He gently nudged us from location to location...while I'm on the topic of the eateries that we visited, although I'd been to most of them, the experience on the food tour was unique. I'd recommend this activity for both locals and visitors to Vancouver alike. Speaking to the fact that we were a group of about twenty colleagues, this was a great activity that centred around food and drink. Each time we sat down, everyone got mixed up and had a chance to talk to a new set of coworkers and the walks between stops in the tour provided more casual opportunities to have chats with people that didn't interact every day. I think this is a great, inclusive activity for work groups. It's not easy to balance everyone's needs when you have a diverse group in terms of age, interest in physical activity, etc. I researched and presented three options (other options were an evening on Grouse Mtn and an Amazing Race around downtown) for everyone to vote on and I was secretly hoping that they'd choose Vancouver Food Tour! In terms of the amount of food, I think most of us were full at the end and didn't have to go out for an evening meal after the tour. I arranged a food tour as a company activity for our support staff. Normally it is so hard to find something that everyone will love. I have heard nothing but positive feedback for this event and I found it really enjoyable myself. Now I don't want to give the locations and food away but the food and drinks at each location were good and carefully selected for pairing. Our tour guide, Carlos was very genuine and personable. I think most people would think of this tour as a tourist thing but as a local, it exposed me to new places and lots of facts about the Gastown area that I didn't know and found to be interesting. We did the 'Taste of Gastown' tour but they also have one oriented for beer, cocktails and one were you can take a plane out to Salt Spring Island! And if you want to do something more personal, you can arrange it with their website and they will work around you, the food that you like/don't like and your budget. My wife and I loved our food tour with the group. We arranged it at the beginning of our honeymoon in Vancouver/BC, so it was a great way to discover a part of town that we wouldn't have ventured to otherwise (Gastown), learn about the city, and get great recommendations for the rest of the week. Brittany was our guide and she was energetic and pretty knowledgeable about where to go and what to eat (most importantly) in Vancouver. In fact, she wrote down a few small pages about where to eat, and we essentially planned the rest of our week according to her list. I still have it in my wallet as we crossed off places that we went to. With regards to the restaurant, I don't think any one particularly stood out as upper echelon of the best I've ever eaten, but the food on the tour was a 4-4.5 out of 5 and the story behind the restaurants, the people we ate with, and neighboorhood were great ways to start out our weeklong honeymoon. The only downside may have been the overall costs of the tour, as it is more than probably buying the food ourselves and there was more than enough to eat. For starters, the staff was incredibly accommodating as I had allowed my gift certificate to expire (twice!) and was still able to come along on the tour and I'm so glad I did. We went to 4 places with food and drink parings and saw parts of town we hadn't seen yet. The food was great, the drinks tasty and Carlos was an incredible guide. We had an amazing time on our tour. Our guide Francesca was very knowledgeable about the city, the restaurants and just the history of Canada in general. She was incredibly personable and helpful with last-minute dietary restrictions within our group. The tour itinerary itself was a good cross-section from sangria, to traditional pub/beer, to wine, to Irish Guinness/whiskey. At each location there was a wonderful food pairing to go with the spirits/wine/beer and by the end we were happy and satisfied and ended spending the rest of the evening in Gastown afterwards. If you are traveling in Vancouver you can't miss this tour. We also had two locals on the tour that received the tour as a gift for a birthday celebration. They loved the tour as well. We had a ball and were able to try four different restaurants that each offered something a little bit different. All the restaurants had innovative food and drink combinations. We started with Rouge which is a Vancouver success story and we were thrilled with the three starters to pair with the beers. From there we moved on to Salt a wine and charcuterie bar. They even were able to pair a trio of sparkling water fiz drinks for me as I'm pregnant. They really went out of their way to cater to each person on the tour. As if that wasn't enough, we then continued to Irish Heather and sat in the back at the whiskey bar. The Executive Chef came out and explained the treats he prepared for us. These paired nicely with the whiskey drinks their mixologist brought us. Lastly we hit Bambodda which is a modern take on Chinese food. As a virgin to BC, I couldn't imagine a better way to get my gastronomic cherry popped than through an orgasmic journey led by none other than Ms. Melody Fury and the Vancouver Food Tour. Sure, everyone who has any sort of understanding of Canadian cuisine knows about Tim Hortons and Poutine, but if that's all I wanted to fit into my gullet, I would've stayed home and watched my favorite dirty movie with a beer in one hand and a cupcake in the other. What was amazingly mind-blowing about this tour was how I never got bored at any of the stops. From past food tour experiences in other cities, I remember having to go to places that I had no interest in going to and spending time with d-bags I would rather impale with a scimitar. But when you're in the hands of the Vancouver Food Tour, you can let your cares and concerns be swept away with the gentle BC breeze because nothing but good food and amazing company will fill your evening. As for the food, to this day I don't think I've been privy to such an assortment of edibles and drinkables that invigorated every sense in my body. There were multiple times where I thought to myself 'Good god, I need to go to the hospital and see an OB-GYN, because I think I just had a mouth baby'. Not only was the food amazing, it came with an unparalleled depth of culinary knowledge and gusto that only a passionate foodie could carry. And finally, the most unique thing about this tour is the stops consisted of ZERO tourist destinations. This is a must-do if you are visiting the Vancouver area. My mom, sister and I had such a great night on the Gastown food tour. When we travel we are always on the search for great food, and this tour was a great opportunity to try local dishes and learn about the city. Unfortunately we initially had a problem with our tour. When we arrived at the meeting place no one else was there for the tour. After waiting and calling the office, we finally reached the owner, who apologized and said they must have had trouble with their reservation vendor they use, because they didn't have a record of our reservation that night. Hopefully they have worked that problem out since. We were disappointed but the owner (I forget his name now!) came out 30 minutes later and gave the 3 of us a personal tour. He was so professional, personable, and we had a great experience. The tour took us to a few different places in Gastown, including a few stops that were off the beaten path but were GREAT finds. This was one of our last nights in Vancouver and we had spent some time in Gastown so we thought we had seen most of the sights. But this tour took us to places we never would have found on our own. Each stop had delicious food and offered a great chance to talk with the owners and learn about their restaurant, their dishes, and how they fit into the overall Gastown culture. I was blown away not only by the locations visited and food selections, but also by our friendly, informative and engaging guide Angelique. In case you are wondering what its like, we had Whiskey Sours with chicken bites, deviled eggs, and fish tacos; Dark & Stormies with Caribbean treats; Wine samplings paired with cheeses, salumi, and sausage; Local Brews perfectly paired the most upscale pub food I have ever had! My wife and I did the Craft beer and bites tour. We have been living in Vancouver for a little over 2 years ago and this tour was given to us as a gift. Lucky for Carlos was able to extend the expiry date of the coupon so that my wife and I could enjoy this great tour. Caitlin was great and kind and educated us on some local Vancity info we were unaware of. The food and beer pairings were wonderful!! I really enjoyed the coconut curry and Fat Tug IPA combo from Rogue. Never in my life would I have thought that these two would compliment each other so well. The devilled egg and fish tacos along with live music from Revel room were superb. We will definitely fist that place again as a result. The Irish Heather was last with, as always, wonderful beers and delectable foods. As a now local, most of the beers I was more than familiar with, but I would highly recommend this type of tour to anyone, visitor or local. The culinary tour of Gastown was easily the highlight of our trip to Vancouver. While the "typical" tourist activities are always fun to experience, a tour this unique was definitely a breath of fresh air. My friend and I did the Gastown tour while on a four-day vacation in Vancouver. We both had a great time and enjoyed spending a few hours with our guide Carlos and another young couple. It turned out to be a pretty intimate experience with only the five of us, which was great. However, since my friend is a pescaterian and does not drink alcohol, we felt that the value for the price wasn't there for her. We checked with the company ahead of time to see show such situation is handled and got assurance that they will take care of it. While they did a great job accommodating her food restrictions, there wasn't much they could do about alcohol. I think they should provide a different price point for those opting out of alcohol. I would definitely recommend this activity to those without any such restrictions though. read more

If you are a big foodie and libation lover then I definitely recommend going on this tour when you are in Vancouver, B.C. I went on the Gastown Tour with my sisters this past Columbus weekend. Our tour guide, Nicole, was amazing! We strolled through and dined in several spots. We started out at Pourhouse and learned a little thing or two on some old classics. We strolled then into an alley (sounds crazy but if you heard the historical aspect----you would love it!) and went to Salt for a wine flight and some cheese, followed by Judas Goat for pintxos and sherry. Then Nicole led us to a place called Shebeen since my sister was a whiskey lover. We then topped off our evening at The Diamond for dessert and a nightcap libation. I recommend the penicillin drink. It was delish! The extras (there were drinks that you paid for on the tour but if you wanted an extra one---have your bills ready) were well worth. I enjoyed meeting new people on this tour. The tour itself was every penny that I would undoubtedly do again. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable, and the staff at each location had a clear passion for their product. Our small group of 6 guests visited four restaurants, all of which were welcoming and most of which were new to us.
