I have known this hospital has tricky layout and made me confused...and 8 years later, still tricky and more worse. The ceiling is kinda low and I felt like being in a maze. I wanted to have an ultrasound over breast but they kept telling me mammogram first. I didn't understand why but as it's their protocol, I had to follow. So I checked in mammogram test but until the technician got suspicious about I was in the another mammogram test room and I was another "Mari" (there was another same name patient!), I had no escorted by receptionist. The technician for mammogram was super kind and friendly. After we finished testing, she asked me if I had time. Of course! Then she set up ultrasound test right away. That was wow. Because I didn't have family doctor's requisition either. Both test results had nothing suspicious. I was very happy that my long day ended positively.

It's smaller than the other big hospitals, and the wayfinding is confusing. The signs are not the clearest and the different entrances are dispersed with no main road signs indicating directions for the different entrances other than emergency. Tends to be cold inside.

Good luck finding a pillow in an emergency bed! The walls and furniture have holes in them and maintenance can't keep up. Their H-Vac system was last updated in 1971 and can't be upped anyfurther so it's FREEZING in there. Good luck finding anyone to get you a blanket to put around you. Staff, nurses and doctors are overworked and grumpy. Provicence pays their ER docs per turn around so you don't get to see one for very long. I have several health issues, none of them my own fault, and St. P.'s is the closest hospital to me. I cannot always be diverted to Mt. St. Josephs so have to put up with this hell hole of a hospital. I won't talk about the food because that's too cliqued. I'm almost in tears if I have to go there!

Had to return to emergency. Lay on gurney for hours, no pillow offered, no water offered and no doctor ever attended. After waiting hours, I checked myself out. Week later I returned to emergency and did get a bed in palliative care. Conditions are terrible. Due to construction of the new hospital, there is much neglect in the Burrard Street hospital. Nighttime is freezing, nurses are wearing bed quilts around their shoulders. Patients are bundled up with a hooded jacket and quilts to keep warm. Conditions are not ideal for patients that need special care and attention. I hope because of the lack of upgrading and support in the Burrard location we don't have a similar situation that is happening in Alberta where patients are dying waiting in emergency rooms for medical attention.

The "Diamond" center houses the outpatient offices for most of the VGH medical specialists and speciality clinics. ATRIUM AND MAIN FLOOR: The outpatient bloodwork station is located on the main floor. So if you need some tests done, look for it near the door facing Laurel street. There is a large auditorium on the main floor. The main floor also houses eateries including Salad Loop, Starbucks coffee, Zookaaz coffee (and sandwiches) and a Sushi bar. There is also a Shoppers Drug Mart and a medical equipment store. The atrium has many tables and benches both inside and out. God forbid you need it, but the security office is also on the main floor. Finally there are two sets of elevators: one set to the parking below and another set to all the floors above. OTHER FLOORS: the second floor houses the UBC medical library as well as a multitude of educational meeting rooms, study tables, and video conferencing rooms. The fourth houses the VCH research institute clinical research unit. The top floors are UBC medicine administration offices and more meeting rooms. The remainder are clinic spaces for specialists and their patients. The waiting rooms are all very open, clean, and since the building is mostly glass, there are good views and lots of light in all patient waiting areas.

I had a medical emergency a couple of months ago and was warded here for close to a month. From…read moreemergency to ICU and to the regular ward, it has been quite an experience. I've never been admitted to a hospital from birth till now. I found out nurses were not trained to do the IV needle thing, they learned on the job. So my arms still have hard bumps where the needles didn't go in correctly at the emergency ward and those bumps were water retention or edema. R said my arm was so swollen he had to question the nurses what happened and they immediately removed it. The doctors said they should be gone soon but it has been several weeks now. The ICU nurses and care aides were wonderful. Cheerful and kind. The regular ward nurses were hit and miss in the care. Some were really caring and dedicated, some couldn't be bothered and treat you like it was a big hardship to ask them for help. The doctors do come round very often everyday to check on me. Same with the physio and occupational therapist. They came everyday except Sunday to do rehab with me. I had to do a lot of tests and the hospital staff are generally very patient and kind. I also had to go to another hospital for a test/procedure and a nurse escorted me there and back. My experience with the healthcare system (from calling 911 for the ambulance) to the emergency and to discharge is positive. Not the horror story I read about in the news. The ambulance came within minutes and my wait in emergency was under half an hour. I think my condition was really bad and close to dying so the triage worked. I am super thankful to the team of healthcare personnel who worked tirelessly to make sure I am ok. I opted for outpatient rehab and they are located inside the Optimization Centre. It is still a long journey to full or 90% recovery, they estimated about a year, so I guess I'll still be visiting the hospital for rehab frequently until I'm given the all clear. There is a cafeteria here with Starbucks coffee. The breakfast sandwich is terrible. The hospital food is also bad/unappetizing. The sandwich and wrap are ok. There is also an area where you can borrow or leave books.

It is currently spearheading the "Bright Future" campaign to raise funds for the $1.8 billion Burnaby Hospital Redevelopment Project--the largest capital project in Burnaby's history. The Bold Vision: Redevelopment Project & Fundraising Goals The redevelopment is a multi-phase project designed to completely transform the aging facility into a modern Campus of Care that will serve the community for generations. Comprehensive Community Care Burnaby Hospital provides full-scope acute care services for all members of the community, including seniors, adults, and children (pediatrics). The modernization is crucial for delivering quality care in an optimal environment, especially for: * Emergency Services: Addressing the severe overcrowding in the current Emergency Department, which was designed for 54,000 annual visits but sees over 83,000. * Specialized Units: Including new Intensive Care, Medical Imaging, Inpatient Oncology, and Cardiac Telemetry Departments. * Mental Health: Introducing a new, dedicated Mental Health and Substance Use Inpatient Unit. Key Fundraising Event: Annual Gala Dinner The Burnaby Hospital Foundation's Annual Gala is one of its most important fundraising events, bringing together community leaders, corporate partners and supporters. * Event: 12th Annual Gala (Tentative) Date: November 7, 2025 Location: Delta Hotel Burnaby, 4331 Dominion Street, Burnaby, BC Purpose: The evening features a cocktail reception, multi-course meal, live entertainment, and a live auction, with all proceeds supporting the Bright Future Redevelopment Campaign. Unfortunately, the MD had a prior commitment and couldn't attend the Redevelopment Campaign event in person. However, they showed their support by reserving a table from those MD who were able to attend and also made a generous donation directly to the foundation.

For the most part, the nurses were nice (except for this one nurse that seems to be all over the place with organizations). In terms of my treatments, they put me on IV antibiotics for 2 weeks before deciding to put me on the pill version for my infection & giving me a limited amount of hydromorphone if my hip joint continue to be an issue. All and all, while my stay wasn't terrible, but my only criticism here is: 1) make sure your fruits aren't moldy (got a serving of moldy grapes once and makes me wonder if other patients noticed it)... seriously this could've gone sideways for the hospital QUICK.... 2) Upgrade your hospital's electrical system because my room and the adjacent rooms just wasn't able to handle the amount of electricity needed for the AC because of the slight heat wave we had during the first weekend we were there (8th till 11th). It kept tripping the circuit breaker due to the sheer amount of power. This could've gone quite wrong very fast depending on the circumstances. Sure this happened in the older building but that's still no excuse. The only reason why I'm giving this place 2 stars instead of 1 is because of the nurses I kept seeing that for the most part were pretty friendly (guess I'm lucky given some of the other reviews).
