It was a week ago today that I had a total hip replacement and though the plan was to go home the same day, I ended up spending the night due to breathing complications during the operation. It took a long time for me to come around and though I could not respond I could hear those in the recovery room concerned about the need to confirm keeping me overnight. My experience from pre-op clinics taken to pre-op messaging and replies (over the phone) about uncertainties I had (twice) to the day of surgery in preparation, recovery and the post-op care I received, all I can say is THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!! Everyone that took care of me (including housekeeping) were not only incredibly professional and friendly but they treated me more like family they were caring for rather than a patient. Everyone was upbeat and there was more sharing of life, chuckles and laughter keeping the atmosphere positive than one would have ever expected. I tend to ramble... Writing another hospital review which I'm using and experiencing our medical system again. Richmond Hospital is located on Westminster Hwy & Gillbert Rd. It opened since 1980 and looked so new and clean. Based on 2 times visit experience, I have quite different experience of it. The hospital is a safe, and welcoming space to patients and staff alike, of all types, colours, and creeds. I was writing reviews in Yelp just like other people - trying to be a critic on most restaurants, businesses, organizations or entities that provide services & cater food & labor that we like or dislike.... Well, this one is a little different I should say, it was written on a patient's bed in the Richmond General Hospital with my heart felt experience. Deep inside me I always respect the health workers, be it doctors, registered nurses, physiotherapist, nurse interns, care takers and the paramedics... just like I always have a crush on girls who can play piano (Level 8 or above). Oops, I went too far! Let's back to the point. After a couple of incidents I took my doctor's advise/ referral to go for a CT scan in RGH after the CNY long weekend, they sent me to Emergency ward which was super busy then right after the CT as they didn't like what they have seen (some breeding vessels in my brain with BP150+...) Anyway, long story short, 28 hours later I am here typing my iPhone keypad on the bed that they managed to squeeze for me. I tried not to worry about the outcome or the consequences (may be my last review) but I am grateful to all the personnel get involved, they were all so professional, so tender, loving and care to every single patient as far as I could see and hear. The food/meals from the kitchen may not be the best taste, the bed may not be the comfiest as your Simmons or Luxury Gel memory foams. But I am talking about their work ethic and attitude here! I was misdiagnosed for two months. My aneurism was mistaken for a simple blockage. It was only discovered by accident by an XRAY technician, not a doctor, when in the ER for a spinal cord issue. I almost died. Except for My brilliant Surgeon the entire experience in that place was ignorant and abuseive. I was sent home after only five days with pneumonia. I began the Bariatric Program at Richmond General Hospital, signed forms, attended Zoom meetings, and because I also work and lead a productive life, I had to switch around times to make it for call backs. The last time that I had to switch... I had them call me for an over the phone meeting with their social worker. And I waited, and waited, and waited even more. But... It wasn't until I got home, that I saw that they phoned my landline, and not my cell phone, which I directed them to call, as I was at work. I have had issues with their clinic in the past, & heard bad reviews from other clients in different Bariatric programs... But I thought that could all just be heresay. So I decided to be the bigger person, and give them a shot. This was a huge mistake & a serious WASTE of time on my part! Today, I waited again for a call from their Dietitian "Angel". I had both phone's beside me. And again, I waited, and waited, and finally.. I called them. And what I was told, was that because of their mistake calling me at the wrong number, even after I had discussed with them about using my cell phone... I had missed my call, and they were canceling my contract with their program. After a 1.5 year wait list, plus medical appointments, assessments, meetings on zoom, and experiencing the run around with their clinic... I was told today, by the soft speaking devil herself... She wasn't going to call me today after all. And so... I was left waiting, again... Such a terrible clinic!! If you can go elsewhere, I would highly recommend doing so. Save yourself the time, & mental health... And find a different program. If they are this bad now... Just imagine how BAD it will be, Post-Surgery!! I wouldn't be surprised, if they botched that too... And these things are why, I am giving them 1 star. If I could give them less, I would! Such a complete Waste of Time! read more

I thought Burnaby hospital is bad but Richmond hospital is worse. I was at Richmond superstore a few days ago. Bought a case for my iPhone 13. Came home and realized I was overcharged. Today I went to Richmond. Just when I was at Westminster highway, I started coughing and felt hot. I also felt confused so I pulled over and went to Richmond hospital. After I arrive at the hospital, I was checked in. Initially got my blood pressure taken. Then went back to waiting room. After waiting an hour, I asked the triage. The guy say he was busy as soon as I said I had Covid symptoms and slammed the door. Then a few minutes later, he says go to shoppers to get a rapid test kit. The guy who took my blood pressure was aware of my Covid symptoms but did not tell me the hospital doesn't do Covid testing. What a moron. Waste my time. read more

I wish I could give it zero stars. It's never good when a review starts that way, and it's even worse when it's a hospital. Like, agonizingly painfully worse, and potentially-life-threateningly worse. General anesthetic is always supposed to be diluted. That way, when it all leaks into your arm from a poorly-inserted IV, it doesn't burn with most hellacious pain as you hyperventilate and sob yourself into unconsciousness on the operating room table. Which then turns into months of cellulitis all over that arm, and ink-pen marks drawn all up and down your arm to track if the infection is spreading, holding or receding (after three months, it finally receded - thank goodness it was long-sleeve weather and I could cover up the "track marks" the doctor ordered me to maintain). I loved that the hospital did phone for a follow-up survey and I got the chance to share all the complications and consequent multiple rounds of life-saving antibiotic therapy with the hospital directly (kudos for at least pretending to care after the fact). read more

Useless staff.. I went into the emergency room with a chemical burn in my eyes. The first thing I asked for was an eye wash station. They told me someone was in the room (not even using the eye wash) and that they would clear them out for me. After asking 3 more times I got in over 1 hour later.. I saw a dr about 30min after and he referred me to a specialist. A few months later and my vision is still impaired. I've been told if I could of flushed out my eyes sooner the permanent damage would of been avoided. How can they make someone wait an hour to use an eye wash station? It wasn't even busy I was the only one in the waiting room. read more

My opinion of this hospital really depends on what department I'm going into. I've been in maternity, emergency treatment, seen emergency doctors and been through medical imaging. The doctors are either really helpful or really horrible, the nurses are pretty much the same. Maternity - I've had 3 kids here and the first experience was a nightmare. I had an emergency c-section due to preclampsia. The nurses never checked on me, getting up was hell and no one would take me to see my daughter who was in the NICU. The NICU nurse insisted we take my daughter home without the pediatrician looking her over because as she said "it costs $3000 a day to keep your baby here". If my daughter was fine to take home the pediatrician would have discharged her. With my other 2 children I had a much better experience, although there are still some people who should not be in the healthcare field. Emergency Treatment - Had to have a 13 day course of antibiotics for suspected MRSA. I was on vancomycin for 7 days before any of the er doctors referred me to a specialist to see what was wrong with me. I had a staph infection, not mrsa thankfully but went through so much before my issue was finally properly treated (i'm currently recovering). Dr Kim actually said to me "I'm sorry there's nothing I can do for you" and left the room. This dr was the worst I ran into and was just interested in moving onto the next patient. Many of the other drs wanted to help, but didn't really know how. It was essentially the specialist Dr Vortel who quickly diagnosed and helped get me treated. If you have a ongoing serious problem that cannot be fixed with a cast or a few stitches then go to a different hospital (VGH). As with any ER there are long waits so please don't come here with a cold or because you have heartburn. read more

Only one doctor available at night!!! 5hr wait times ! Not acceptable !! 2 doctorrs should be there at a minimum

They have put barriers up outside the emergency department so it is ambulance only and there is no patient drop off zone so that my wife could not help me in. Who ever thought of this idea is a complete moron. I almost fell twice. I most definitely am more injured now than I would have been if I hadn't had to walk so far. At least be intelligent enough to provide a place for a drivers to stop and help the patient/passenger into the department. This doesn't happen at vgh or any other hospital I have ever been to. The nurse said it was to protect paramedics but if they were intelligent they would provide separate entrances for those who come in on their own or just really clog up the ambulance services. The staff and the services at this hospital are good, 3-4 star reviews, but this review is for the food they give to diabetic patients. Every patient I've seen who have been admitted here, who are on the diabetic meals menu as approved by the nutritionist, gets good that makes their diabetes worse. White bread, salty food, coffee with Sugar, juice, overly cooked food. Chocolate pudding or sugary deserts. Who approves this and why? I'd really like to see the health authorities get involved with the nutritionists that make up these meals. Consistently making the patients sicker with foods that are not glycemic friendly and not even palatable. If a Yelper were to review hospitals for good healthy food based on a patients needs and not based on an overly abused budget. They'd all fail! C'mon Fraser Health and all those other health care authorities, get you're act together and include healthy food options in your patient care. Or is it more about budgets than people? If other hospital systems can do it, why not ours? Really hoping there will be big changes in terms of food service relating to patient care. read more

My mother has had the misfortune to be on Ward3N for the past one week post hip surgery. It has been a horrendous experience to say the least. My mother's nurse Sara as well as the OT Kaitlin who work on this ward stood out in their dedication to their job as well as their professionalism . One night nurse who came on 4 days into my mothers stay there actually made my mother cry since she insisted that my mother walk to the bathroom in the middle of the night when my mom requested a bed pan due to too much pain. The transition nurse Julian on the ward must pride himself in keeping the traffic moving on the ward since he informed me on Monday one day post surgery what my moms discharge date would be. Notwithstanding translation issues and cultural barriers where my mothers condition actually deteriorated by midweek, he informed me that my mother was discharged on the Friday while she indicated to us that she felt worse 4 days post surgery than she did immediately after.A text message from him informed me I would be liable for 1500 a day after the Friday discharge date ( ludicrously funny in its effort at intimidation) Any effort to communicate what my mother was feeling was ignored except by Sara , my moms nurse. A conversation with my mother on the Friday ( day of so called discharge) indicated she was in extreme pain. A pre- discharge visit that is typical in hospitals to the patients home was suggested but ignored( necessary as my Mom and Dad live alone...care givers then get an idea what their patients are dealing with once discharged) The whole scenario as it kept unfolding over the last few days is actually unbelievable . That health care professionals get so caught up in their agendas as to actually forget or downright ignore the ones they took oath to care for is disheartening. The bright spot is that at least my mother was lucky to get a gentle compassionate person like Sara assigned as her nurse who tried her best to navigate my mothers needs along with that of the transitional team headed by the unyielding Julian. I've been here quite a number of times , some for myself and others for family members or loved ones. I honestly wish you could give less than one star on yelp because this Hospital deserves it. I've never once had a pleasant experience here and probably never will. The wait times in the ER are inhumanly long. And many of the nurses are of little or no help what so ever. You're probably better off driving the extra mile and going to Delta. The only semi pleasant thing about this place is that they finally decided to add free wifi , but surprise , surprise it doesn't work in one of the places you need it most ; the waiting room .. read more

Recently, I was in Richmond, BC for the Sportsfest West games help in Richmond Olympic Oval and Minoru Park. Unfortunately, one of the player got injured and the paramedics asked us to take him to the nearest hospital which was Richmond Hospital. My initial reaction was to give them a 2 star or 1 star due to their lack of care and follow up. However, some of the people who were working there made a difference. It was a hot day and there were no vending machines nor any water fountain in and around the waiting area. The male nurse next to the reception desk at the emergency was really rude. I asked for a glass or a cup of water and he did not give it to me. Nor did he offer to provide guidance. He simply referred me to the bathroom sink even though he has a proper tap just behind him that he could have provided water from. This is no way to treat anyone! Also, another male nurse who came to check on the injured athlete suggested that we should ice the would to reduce the swelling, and then simply disappeared until we had to go and ask another nurse to bring us some ice. However, the lady radiologist (Linda or Lisa) as well as the attendant Ray were really friendly and service oriented people who showed that they cared along with the Doctor Mondor. Hence, I am providing them a 3 star. read more

I went there on to occasions with a high blood pressure of 200/160, and the second time my bp was198. On both occasions I waited in an empty waiting room for over two hours, and the in the Dr's room for another hour, after seeing the Dr, he scared me by telling me that I need to make an appointment with a doctor within two week, and he gave me a doctor availability list, and I was sent home. This is crazy he is a doctor and you would think that he would have taken some tests to see what my problem was. read more

I was the recipient of outstanding care at Richmond Hospital twice in the last two years. I had ileostomy surgery for colorectal cancer two years ago and my surgical team and the nurses who looked after me post-op could not have been better or more professional and compassionate. Then last year I had my reversal surgery and experienced the same level of care again, The nurses especially work in quite trying conditions as the hospital has become far too small for the community. But I never saw a frown or heard a disparaging word from any of them . i will be forever grateful to them. read more

Came here while visiting a friend and made the mistake of eating at the cafeteria simply cause I forgot my lunch. I think I had something that resembled chicken, mashed potatoes and peas. It was bland and uneventful, especially for what they charged me. I've had airplane food which tasted better. Absolutely disgraceful and frightening! The ER doctors may actually be more incompetent than some of the ER nurses! Transfer to St Paul's or Vancouver General as fast as you can!! As a RN for more than 25 yrs, to hear a diagnosis of "tummy pain" from the ER doctor when my mother was admitted complaining of chest pain for 12+ hours, hypoxia, O2 saturation of 86%, elevated wbc of 16000, elevated troponin level and this was 4 days after being discharged from the same hospital following vascular surgery! Who in their right mind discharges a 91 yr old patient home without home health after an invasive procedure and multiple co-morbidities? God help all of you poor souls who live in Richmond! ~ I will only give a major shout out to one ER nurse who was able to give a comprehensive report and knew his patient! Thank you, Jessie RN, you were amazing and probably will be recruited soon to a hospital where you can work along side medical professionals who are as intelligent as you! I was so disgusted and disappointed when my family from Eastern Canada tried to explain to me "That's how it is in BC. They have cut funding to healthcare." Oh, ok. That makes sense. NOT!! I was coughing every few seconds, I was standing in nurses reception area, the nurse who probably spends hours looking gat a mirror don't even make eye contact with you, when you ask about how long you still need to wait, she said she didn't know your nurse name or your doctor's name so she can't help you. stay the fffff away, all i got is a bottle of antibiotics, make me puke for two days, so i went to my usually family doctor, I am having a viral infection , of course antibiotic wouldn't work, this shit hole should be shut down. read more

I had the misfortune of taking my wife who was suffering severe chest pains to the Emergency ward at RGH last evening at approx. 6:30 PM. Initially following a short review by a Registered Nurse and an ECG it was apparent a heart attack was ruled out. Although you may consider this as gratifying it was clearly apparent the terrible pain was unrelated to the heart. My wife was placed on a list of less than serious as a result along with other patients including lacerated hands and dislocated fingers to mention a few .. At approximately 09:40 my wife found the pain of sitting in the waiting room after 3 hours to be unbearable and I asked the gentleman at the admission wicket if we were getting close to being seen by a doctor. He informed me in a gentle fashion that it was extremely busy and my wife was three down from the top of the list however he suspected it could still be a considerable wait. At that point I indicated to him I was taking my wife back home where I could at least provide an environment of comfort alleviating more aggravation with her condition until I could arrange a Doctors visit the following day. I want to vent here however I am intelligent enough in understanding the natures of Triage and the chronic lack of Doctors and /or beds. I truly respect the medical staff at the Hospital and I am sure they understand and feel bad for situations like this. I wish my Tax money was redirected in efforts related to curing this serious issue. read more

Hello: It was a Tuesday, middle of the night when I brought my adult daughter (Richmond resident), to Emergency for a blood test and chest x-ray which seemed a simple request because of her symptoms of three weeks. The doctor could not see her and suggested we take her to local hospital as it would be faster if pneumonia was the problem. WOW ! How wrong could this advice have been ! Got called in almost immediately. Signaled a thumbs up to my 80 year old husband in the car outside. Andrea got taken down the hall moments after registering....THAT WAS THE END OF IT ! After 2 hours, we left. Nothing was done....no explanation, nothing. We got the usual excuses, heart attack patients, police coming in with MVA patients. etc .etc. WE SAW NONE OF THIS KIND OF ACTIVITY ! It was very peaceful and quiet. Paramedics on the other side of the glass sitting around. My husband and I had to drive home to Surrey at 2:30 am feeling we had been had. I suggest the emergency staff at Richmond spend a couple hours in Surrey Emergency to see what being busy is all about. Over the years, I have nothing but high praise for SMH emergency. They triage and keep patients moving. Not stock piling them as we saw last night. No one left in the time we were there ! This Hospital has since improved its procedures and gotten an attitude adjustment. When I was hospitalized with pneumonia here recently, I was treated promptly and compassionately. Stay clear away from this hospital! Wrong medication given, medication given twice when its only once a day, medication given on full stomach when should be given on an empty stomach. If the patient was not alert, could've easily been given double dose which is lethal and can kill a person. The nurses there are very unprofessional and does not respect the patient, really rude and not compassionate. When a patient is there to get better, they kept asking if they want to go to palliative care. wtf? They said at that ward, they can give better pain meds. What a load of crap. And after asking 10 times and answering "NO" every time, they get mad and refuse to give care anymore. Supposed to change bandage dressing and they refused to do it, and didn't come by to do the vitals. This is malpractice and is not professional. The two nurses are Sukhi and Winnie. If you get them as your nurses, transfer the heck outta there! read more

My big PTSD incident was a direct result of spending 6 days in that squalor of hell and suffering through the insanely bad nursing staff, the useless surgeon on my case (who was called on the mat about it). This must just sound like sour grapes, but it was a seriously bad event that took a lot of medical time to repair. Listening to a young nurse joyfully screwing around with patients meal orders and putting meat on veggie orders etc etc...plus the other ones trying to feed me day old meals for giggles. This went on and on. By the way, this is only ONE of multiple experiences, shared by both myself and my partner. That and stories from nurses I've talked to who have said they would stop nursing before they would go to Richmond Hospital. Oh, and its filthy. Yup, staff are pretty much useless. There are some good departments, but they tend to be the ones that don't have nurses and doctors, ie physio etc.. My friend hates walking by the hospital, since one of their big gimme money signs has a huge picture of the doc that abused the hell out of her sexually in his office. I still live in Richmond and will not go into that hospital unless its for coffee at Starbucks. Please note that Yelp is doing something I consider a bit shady in order to pump up the rating for outfits....eg, they have removed multiple reports on this hospital, and they are not part of the rating. ALL of these removed reviews are damning and condemning regarding this really poor excuse for a medical centre. If they had been factored in, the hospital would have made ONE STAR.
