    Eco-friendly pee jar

Rooms with an ocean view! 3 days after I fractured my foot, my brother shattered his ankle. Awesome luck eh? The hospital is pretty worn and torn, but the nurses were super friendly. I arrived way past visiting hours, but they had no issues with me visiting. My bro's room had a wicked view of the downtown skyline. Definitely beats staring at a wall or a tree. Pretty eco-friendly too. The bed pan was made of recycled cardboard. I'd be scared of leaks though.

I have known this hospital has tricky layout and made me confused...and 8 years later, still tricky and more worse. The ceiling is kinda low and I felt like being in a maze. I wanted to have an ultrasound over breast but they kept telling me mammogram first. I didn't understand why but as it's their protocol, I had to follow. So I checked in mammogram test but until the technician got suspicious about I was in the another mammogram test room and I was another "Mari" (there was another same name patient!), I had no escorted by receptionist. The technician for mammogram was super kind and friendly. After we finished testing, she asked me if I had time. Of course! Then she set up ultrasound test right away. That was wow. Because I didn't have family doctor's requisition either. Both test results had nothing suspicious. I was very happy that my long day ended positively.

It's smaller than the other big hospitals, and the wayfinding is confusing. The signs are not the clearest and the different entrances are dispersed with no main road signs indicating directions for the different entrances other than emergency. Tends to be cold inside.

Stunningly beautiful outpatient building located on the Vancouver General Hospital Campus. The…read moregrand atrium is open all the way to the top, allowing light to pass through to all floors. The "Diamond" center houses the outpatient offices for most of the VGH medical specialists and speciality clinics. ATRIUM AND MAIN FLOOR: The outpatient bloodwork station is located on the main floor. So if you need some tests done, look for it near the door facing Laurel street. There is a large auditorium on the main floor. The main floor also houses eateries including Salad Loop, Starbucks coffee, Zookaaz coffee (and sandwiches) and a Sushi bar. There is also a Shoppers Drug Mart and a medical equipment store. The atrium has many tables and benches both inside and out. God forbid you need it, but the security office is also on the main floor. Finally there are two sets of elevators: one set to the parking below and another set to all the floors above. OTHER FLOORS: the second floor houses the UBC medical library as well as a multitude of educational meeting rooms, study tables, and video conferencing rooms. The fourth houses the VCH research institute clinical research unit. The top floors are UBC medicine administration offices and more meeting rooms. The remainder are clinic spaces for specialists and their patients. The waiting rooms are all very open, clean, and since the building is mostly glass, there are good views and lots of light in all patient waiting areas.

Re: recent (Sept/25) appointment with specialist physician at Medical Day Care - Hematology…read moreClinic, within the Royal Columbian Hospital. My appointment with this clinic and doctor, was a first time experience, and required that I check into the hospital's 'Registration' on the main floor before proceding to the Medical Day Care Clinic. A first time appointment procedure to provide personal and medical information, and acquire a completed registration form to take to Medical Day Care and doctor's office for check in. After the form was completed I was able to go down to Medical Day Care - Hematology, located on the basement level of the hospital, and submit the form to attending office staff. And then waited along with others, in the hall's adjoining waiting area outside the office, for my appointment time with the doctor. The Physician, Dr Vicky Chan (Hematologist), conducted a very interesting, and highly-interactive discussion with me of the reports she had received from my family doctor, and medical lab. Many questions regarding the nature of the diagnosed medical condition were asked, and answered. I left her office with a medical lab requisition to acquire further, and more extensive blood analyses -- just in case previous tests had missed any factors involved in the blood condition as shown. A big thank you to Dr Chan for her caring personal approach and help. And thanks to all other staff for their friendly, and efficient services - every step along the way was handled so smoothly.

There was no room for staff or patients to get between the gurneys. They had to be continuously moved if someone needed to get through. Gurneys lined the hallways didn't have call bells, so no way to tell anyone you needed anything. I'm surprised it was even allowed, as it seemed like an accident waiting to happen, especially incase of a fire. There was a nurse seeing a patient in one of the curtained off rooms. The patient became aggressive, and the nurse called for help. Fellow ER staff and security couldn't easily access the area because there were rows of gurneys with patients blocking the way. A definite security issue for both staff and patients.

I had a medical emergency a couple of months ago and was warded here for close to a month. From…read moreemergency to ICU and to the regular ward, it has been quite an experience. I've never been admitted to a hospital from birth till now. I found out nurses were not trained to do the IV needle thing, they learned on the job. So my arms still have hard bumps where the needles didn't go in correctly at the emergency ward and those bumps were water retention or edema. R said my arm was so swollen he had to question the nurses what happened and they immediately removed it. The doctors said they should be gone soon but it has been several weeks now. The ICU nurses and care aides were wonderful. Cheerful and kind. The regular ward nurses were hit and miss in the care. Some were really caring and dedicated, some couldn't be bothered and treat you like it was a big hardship to ask them for help. The doctors do come round very often everyday to check on me. Same with the physio and occupational therapist. They came everyday except Sunday to do rehab with me. I had to do a lot of tests and the hospital staff are generally very patient and kind. I also had to go to another hospital for a test/procedure and a nurse escorted me there and back. My experience with the healthcare system (from calling 911 for the ambulance) to the emergency and to discharge is positive. Not the horror story I read about in the news. The ambulance came within minutes and my wait in emergency was under half an hour. I think my condition was really bad and close to dying so the triage worked. I am super thankful to the team of healthcare personnel who worked tirelessly to make sure I am ok. I opted for outpatient rehab and they are located inside the Optimization Centre. It is still a long journey to full or 90% recovery, they estimated about a year, so I guess I'll still be visiting the hospital for rehab frequently until I'm given the all clear. There is a cafeteria here with Starbucks coffee. The breakfast sandwich is terrible. The hospital food is also bad/unappetizing. The sandwich and wrap are ok. There is also an area where you can borrow or leave books.
