I had back surgery by Dr. Christopher Michael Honey on June 2nd, 2026. I had the most amazing care from the time I walked through the doors until I left. I highly recommend this hospital! I had to come in due to pain and discomfort. Turned out I had an infection & having a massive pain in my left hip joint. For the most part, the nurses were nice (except for this one nurse that seems to be all over the place with organizations). In terms of my treatments, they put me on IV antibiotics for 2 weeks before deciding to put me on the pill version for my infection & giving me a limited amount of hydromorphone if my hip joint continue to be an issue. All and all, while my stay wasn't terrible, but my only criticism here is: 1) make sure your fruits aren't moldy (got a serving of moldy grapes once and makes me wonder if other patients noticed it)... seriously this could've gone sideways for the hospital QUICK.... 2) Upgrade your hospital's electrical system because my room and the adjacent rooms just wasn't able to handle the amount of electricity needed for the AC because of the slight heat wave we had during the first weekend we were there (8th till 11th). It kept tripping the circuit breaker due to the sheer amount of power. This could've gone quite wrong very fast depending on the circumstances. Sure this happened in the older building but that's still no excuse. The only reason why I'm giving this place 2 stars instead of 1 is because of the nurses I kept seeing that for the most part were pretty friendly (guess I'm lucky given some of the other reviews). read more

Lions Gate is not a large hospital. It's layout is dated, and the surrounds is growing. Things will be changing. Just wanted to write a review as the few times I was in for a checkup, all receptionist, staff, nurses, doctors were all very nice and professional. I was in and out (I had an apt.) The parking is efficient, there is also free 2 hour parking within 2-3 blocks. read more

Worst emergency department service ive experienced. No urgency. We were waiting 5hours to see a doctor.

It pains me to finally write this update from my last. The complete and utter lack of compassion and care I have received since on numerous visits has been downright appalling. Lions Gate appears to treat everyone coming in with any sort of pain to be after pills and to simply treat you like a junkie and hopes you leave on your own. I came in in immense pain in my gut and they really, really didn't care. They did an x-ray which they said showed not much, that I was probably backed up and to go take a laxative and go home. I refused. I could feel this was not being constipated. Thankfully my mother was with me and through a huge fit and FINALLY, they decided to do something after I lay on the FLOOR in so much pain I couldn't sit up. They sent me for a CT scan which showed a serious, very serious, problem in my intestines which I could have just gone home with. We shouldn't have had to become very upset and demand they do something. Visits since have been no better, not to that degree, but all of which. If you can at all go somewhere else you should do so. read more

Friday 8 pm admitted in. 6 people after myself. Waiting 9 pm still waiting, still waiting 10 pm. Seeing some of the 6 people after me seeing a Dr and going home. 11pm still waiting all the 6 people after me have come and gone. I left at 11:45 as the pain I was in was too much. Very much like the service my mother got jun/jul 2021. My mother had cancer and the Dr advised me that I was delaying the inevitable. Women next to us with her mom the Dr said your mother is dying, I felt really bad I could tell that she wasn't expecting to hear that. I don't want to hear from the hospital owner telling the sorry scripted rhetoric, and definitely don't tell me to send this info to the quality whatever. Tell them to do their job and look at the damn reviews. My mother used to donate to lions gate, I told her to stop! read more

Every person that came in after me was checked for highbloid pressure they kept ignoring me. I asked several times and she said we have others in front of you. This was a comete lie. I sat and watched and even asked peolple...they all had it done. I left but had to come back the next day as passing out...my bloid pressure was 214. I am posting this because it hurts my heart to see good people being treated shoddy by those in positions of power. No one knows our bodies & pain better than us; thus we turn to medical professionals, not to be ridiculed but to be remedied. A gathering of multiple staff members, in an open corridor beside the E.D. waiting room, to discuss their 50/50 vacation raffle, as they disregard the suffering of those lying in wait, is to me, somewhat of an unveiling of the institution's lack of compassion. For a patient to be told by the attending physician that he's in fact "discovered abnormal, inverted T-Waves on their cardiogram", and in the next breath ask the patient to perform, and I quote, "the rocks in the head test" (2 hours after the CT BRAIN SCAN has cleared the patient's diagnosis of abnormalities) is nothing short of an insult, ridicule and arrogance. The declaration made by an LGH, superior, (whom I will not publicly name) has in his written response to my complaint to Coastal Health, further suggested, "high blood pressure is due to white coat syndrome." If in fact true, then perhaps testing BP adds nothing of value to the diagnosis and well being of patients in the first place. And while it is unfair to paint the entire LGH staff & institution with the same tainted brush; when a valid complaint rests upon it's Superior to "hear" the voice of those were treated unfairly; and he responds with insincerity, immaturity and puffery - manipulating the words of the patient in order to dust the truth and season it with flavours of his own, (so as to protect his employees)... is indeed a travesty. Further adding insult to injury; upon discharge, the attending physician pens his own insecurities and complaints by way of shaming the patient on her medical chart as though it was he who was in some way a victim... at the mercy of the ill and unfortunate. I've refrained from displaying names here. I submitted my complaint to Coastal Health and not much came of it as per above. You also have the option then to file a complaint to PCQ Office, but I felt this will go around in circles & much more effective to post my experience here. Perhaps some one will read it & make some changes at the hospital with regards to how they treat patients. read more

Rooms with an ocean view! 3 days after I fractured my foot, my brother shattered his ankle. Awesome luck eh? The hospital is pretty worn and torn, but the nurses were super friendly. I arrived way past visiting hours, but they had no issues with me visiting. My bro's room had a wicked view of the downtown skyline. Definitely beats staring at a wall or a tree. Pretty eco-friendly too. The bed pan was made of recycled cardboard. I'd be scared of leaks though. read more

Unbelievably rude nurse working here I cannot believe they way that they speak to people over the phone. My boyfriend broke 2 bones in his right leg on Monday it took 5 days until he could get in for surgery which is understandable at the moment due to Covid and priority by urgency. He is almost crying in pain and keeps telling the nurses who keep giving him more and more pills to take instead of trying to even mention that they will find a doctor. Almost 8 different types of narcotic pain killers. I called on his behalf as i could see that nothing helpful was happening and the "nurse" who is supposed to be helping patients get better asked me "do you know what time it is right now? It's not an appropriate time to call" than continued to be EXTREMELY rude not even saying one helpful thing. Didn't even care to try to make anyone feel better by saying that she would help in any way and instead being a huge CUNT. Whoever was answering the phone at 2:30 am on Saturday sept.5th needs to be fired. I will call at an "appropriate" time to make sure I find out whoever this useless cranky nurse is. read more

My 90 year old mom broke her hip , very spry full of energy, yes she has dementia and gets confused, but does that mean she doesn't matter and has to wait 3 days for surgery? Then the staff , or lack of staff can't bother to get her assessed by physio so we can bring her back to her care home ( lives out of town) day 5 they discharged her, she has been in bed for 5 days and no communication with the family. I had my gallbladder removed here, and while the procedure was fine. what was upsetting to me was that I was offered an alternative, but then said it was too complicated and so going with the easiest option. I also wasn't allowed to leave. I had to sign a consent form for my surgery that I was essentially forced to sign. Here in the U.K full removal of the gallbladder is an absolute last resort, as you absolutely do need a gallbladder contrary to what doctors and surgeons say, as it's a very important part of our digestion. I don't digest food the same way since and find weight loss difficult. This is now for life. As well as that, there were a few times I admitted myself to emergency because of my mental health and I was worried for my life and safety. I was treated abysmally by one specific mental health nurse there (a male) who took me into a room and berated me about my mental health implying I was wasting his time. I said I was unable to sleep and that I was dissociative to which he responded "what makes you think you do that?" Implying I don't know my own mind or mental health issues. I thought hospitals were supposed to be a place for safety to protect those whose lives are in danger. He was visibly irritated and said something along the lines that there were people there who had "real" problems. I would not feel comfortable with anyone I know being under his care in the psychiatric unit. I was sent home. I ended up going another time, and it was the same person again treating me like I wasn't even a human, luckily a much nicer psychiatrist came and spoke to me and understood me much better - and seemed to put this other nurse in his place. But this was after about 3 times of having to deal with that same nurse, and being sent home because I "looked fine" or that I was quote "playing on my phone so" so I was ok to leave. Fast foward a few years I have been diagnosed as Autistic by a really nice pyschiatrist here in the U.k, and all those behaviors I had such as "playing on my phone" and feeling overwhelmed with anxiety were meltdowns and stims. I was texting with my mother in the waiting room to calm me down as it was the only thing that made me feel safe. That is already humilitating as a person who was at the time in my late 20's. I can't believe how badly I was treated there, and that one specific psyche nurse clearly was only there for an ego boost and a paycheque and for his own personal sadistic reasons. Scary. I think he was even head of the whole psyche ward. How he ended up there, I don't know. Wish I had his name, and should have sued at the time on the spot, because it greatly impacted my quality of life. I was suicidal because I was an autistic woman who didn't know what was wrong. Thank god I don't live there anymore. There was another time I wound up there because I had taken an overdose of the medication I was on at the time, probably because I wasn't getting the proper help and care I needed and being turned away every time I showed up. My heart rate was 156bpm at one point for over an hour and all the doctors just collectively concluded I had snorted cocaine, despite telling them repeatedly I don't touch drugs and could over hear their conversations. One person was supposed to give me medicine to calm me down, and once the doctor came over the ask the other doctor after an hour if they had given me medication yet, they just said, "no". Once my tests came back concluding I had not been snorting cocaine, I could over hear the nurses' confused reactions. It should never be assumed someone who has overdosed on their medication that that person is using drugs - and no one bothered to look into why my heart rate was so high (though it was because I was in an extreme fear reponse to having just taking too much medicine) Ever since I have been tachycardic and my resring heart rate is no less than 140bpm. All they said was that "sometimes the medication I took can damage your body". And was sent home. The list goes on. You can't make this stuff up. Piss poor treatment. One star is generous. read more

was in Lions Gate last week for a kidney issue. the Russian dietary aid told me I didn't deserve coffee with my breakfast, she said I had to earn it. generally always a very bad experience. it's no way to run a place where people need care. I'll just get to the point, spend the extra time to take your child to Children's even if you are minutes away from LGH like we are (unless you need help NOW :/ ) There is zero compassion for children at this place. I had my 4 yr old daughter who is TINY here to be checked out. After waiting in intake for 3.5 hours and the man that came in after us getting called in before us, I went up and just asked how much longer they thought the wait was going to be, mentioned the man and the woman told me it went by severity, which is fair! I have no idea what this man was in for and I wasn't about to argue that, but I asked her to check for me anyways because my kids 4, very sick, told she has to keep her mask on, and surrounded by germs and unable to be covid vaxxed due to her age. Well, they couldn't find her name in the system and gave me some excuse to get me to sit back down so they could look for her paper work 20 mins later they find her, enter her into their system... things started to move pretty quickly for us... at first. They tested her for Covid which was fine. After an hour we find out her test is negative and that they want to run some blood work. I expressed my concerns about my daughter sitting there and holding still long enough to get 4 vials full of blood and asked for some numbing cream at least. The woman put cream on one arm without even looking at the vein. The cream did nothing anyways and after expressing that this vein was "just so tiny" she decided to go for it anyways without looking at her other arm. She started to wiggle the needle around inside her arm until the blood started flowing... As you can imagine my daughter was losing her mind! They filled 3 vials after what felt like 5 minutes and with an empty vial still sitting there she pulls the needle out and goes "oh... we need more blood" she goes over to the non numbed arm sees a "great vein" and without warning gets right back to work. I have never heard my daughter scream and cry so hard in her life. They filled the vial and brought in a sheet of stickers for her to pick one sticker from, my daughter was still crying too hard to even see what was in front of her. I told them she was taking the sheet after all that. They then promised us that was it, no more poking, no more pain and after 15 minutes of reassuring my daughter that she was done and that we could go soon.... I just get her calm and laughing again and they come back and tell me she needs a PCR test. I yelled "you have got to be kidding me!" They crammed this thing so far up her little nose that she bled. Oh and did I mention that for all of these lovely procedures that I was the one having to restrain her? while she begged me "mommy pls let me go" broke my goddamn heart. Left there feeling sick to my stomach. today, she has terrible bruising on her arms that I can tell are only going to get worse with time And she keeps asking me to not take her back because it scared her. Just an overall terrible experience I know she will never forget. read more

I've been at Lions Gate hospital 3 times now. Two hips and one knee replaced all by Dr. Sidky. I was so well treated each and every time. The food was so good ( they even brought a menu with different selections) I'm back now for a re-check though I haven't had a problem from any of the surgeries! I would like to thank and commend the Emergency Dept for the care I received last Friday and Sat (Feb 14&15). I experienced a sudden trip and fall on a brick walkway. Very fortunately an ambulance was available to deliver me to Lions Gate. In Emerg I was thoroughly examined by Dr Stringer. Multiple X-Rays and several scans ruled out any fractures. I experienced severe pain in my left rib area and was kept in Emerg until the following afternoon. The Nursing Care during the day and also on Friday night from Ramona and Selina was very good and attentive. Coastal Health has since provided twice daily assistance since my discharge. I have been both touched and impressed by the quality of care in Emergency. I'm grateful for the equipment provided. read more

If, God forbid, your loved one EVER lands in ICU, do everything in your power to avoid having Jacinta assigned as their nurse. Stone corpses receive better care than the way she treated my Dad. Yelling and venting your frustration at a disoriented and frightened patient and asking him what he wants despite the fact that he can't speak due to the tubes down his throat is shameful behavior. And silencing family members who try to help her find out what's wrong by raising a hand and snapping "I'm talking now!" is not exactly what I would call professional behavior. Who knows how she performs when the family isn't in the room - no wonder she was the ONLY nurse who insisted that we phone the nurses station each time we wanted to enter the room (even though we were already inside the unit). Even more frustrating was the fact that her charge nurse blamed us for her terrible bedside manner and unprofessional behavior. These rotten apples should NOT be let within 25 feet of a patient and it's sad that they're allowed to blemish the stellar work performed by the other dedicated and hardworking nurses (Jackie, Janelle, Kelly, Leann, Mel, Shelly - take a bow). You can definitely tell who treats this field as a vocation rather than a job. read more

If you can please avoid this hospital. I have experienced three other hospitals in the lower mainland due to my husbands health challenges.They were MUCH superior to Lions Gate where the nurses are "too busy" to basically provide any care( but they do have time to be on their personal phones checking facebook) As well the floors ( especially six) are a mess.It may be old but you could be better organised ,clean and clutterfree. Of course I have not even got to the doctors who are way too busy as well to provide update on care. They are quick to discharge too and we endedback sicker than ever after twelve hours.Last time with sepsis. There is serious problem with this hospitalon every level. read more

I have chronic heath issues which bring me to the ER fairly often and I cannot say enough about how excellent the care is at LGH. The modern triage set up they have is top notch. They don't treat me as if I am a "hassle" - hey listen to me and ask me what works for my condition, what pain medication and oher types of treatment has helped. As someone who has seen my share of ERs in my life and been left for hours sobbing un excruciating pain only to be patronized or insulted or even left untreated - Lions Gate is a breath of fresh air. Every other hospital in the lower mainland needs to take note as to how this one is running and in particular how they treat people w chronic conditions like severe migraine disease and mental illness. read more

If there was a zero or a nagative number I would choose that. I am an MD whose family member has been hospitalized 3 times at Lions gate this year and once to St. Paul's. Thank goodness for the experience at St Paul's so I could learn that there is a difference. Do not allow yourself or your family members to be taken to Lions Gate Hospital. The list is long as to the reason and they include medical and social items. As a physician I am astounded that they are allowed to stay open. read more

Typical acute care, short staffed, no communication and crowded hallways. However after working in health care for 25 years this worse acute care site ever. Elderly are in restraints as hip protectors, to protect hips fractures, are not offered here. Building is old, no ceiling lifts, tiny rooms. Had to step over two dirty commodes to get to mother's bed in 4 bed room. Snuck into staff washroom to discover it had no sink to wash hands. Can not speak for all floors but 6th floor was dirty and unorganized. Duct taped vinyl chair in patient lounge, should I go on? If any Directers or the CEO is reading this get on with renovations! Thought Fraser Health sites had issues but nothing compared to my 6 day experience with post surgical parent. read more

i have waited over a year to post this so I would be more calm, but this hospital is dangerous. More than once they insisted I had my medication, argued, checked, rechecked, then say they are sorry... Once they insisted they had to move me for an XRay which I insisted probably was not for me...and moving me was absolute unbelievable shocking pain... Yep, sorry wrong patient. Constipated for 4 days, asked why no pill for that today, they insisted I have a bowel movement, said no way they again argued even insisting that they checked their records and said yes, their records are initialed and show I had a bowel movement... Sorry, when checked the 3 time realize they made mistake. AGAIN Move rooms as private came available which I wanted, they forgot to change previous patients medicine and records... My family has now experienced firsthand the horror that is the Lions Gate Hospital. A family member recently passed away at LGH and, in addition to the poor treatment by staff throughout the length of his stay, someone stole his glasses between the time he died and his wife came to collect his things. Those glasses had great sentimental value and were not inexpensive, but clearly the staff at this hospital have no regard for the patients. Only a few nurses had the compassion and expertise to deserve praise; the rest were uncaring and lacking proper experience. His passing was made all the worse by his treatment at this hospital. And yet, despite so many similar complaints, the hospital administration does nothing. Shame on them! read more

Due to kidney disease and a bout of Cervical Cancer I am all too familiar with hospitals and when I went in after having a rusty nail go through my foot (5days before) I quickly found that Lions Gate is far far faaaarrrrrr better than the other options in Vancouver. I waited for almost a week to go to the ER because my foot was fine and it was my own anxiety that I had tetanus (pretty much impossible in modern Canada) that caused me to need medical care. The nurses and Dr were wonderful. They saw me right away and were so kind and accommodating. They knew it was just anxiety but took my concerns seriously and treated me like a human being unlike VGH or St Paul's. read more

Worst hospital/doctor care I have ever seen or heard of in my life. My husband, from the US just spent three days in this place and was offered nothing and had to ask for everything. The nurses and Dr.'s here do not care about their patients at all. The discharged him even though he hadn't had a bowel movement in 4 days. He is now in an insane about of pain, trying to get to the pharmacy to get help. This hospitals doors should be closed and no one should ever try and get any type of care here. read more

Very displeased with staff Doctor's and lack of professionalism at Lion's Gate Hospital. There are so many negative points it would make a long long list! Surprised that even with donations the facility, lack of available rooms, long emergency waits, disgusting commentary by staff and even doctors, and some basic service standards are HUGELY LACKING! Overheard staff mocking another patient on two ocassions to the incoming public doing their ER intake with the unit clerk. Imagine hearing your condition being made fun of to others while you sit there. I felt sorry for that particular patient. No matter what the condition be it due to stress/anxiety or from a true accident to a disease that is evident or hidden, there is NO EXCUSE to break confidentiality laws and professionalism!! My personal experience in the ER for a deep cut was that of...oh well, it will leave a big scar, at least its not on your face. Really? The more experienced doctor walked by and gave his opinion on his own, and the newer young doctor scoffed and made fun of him in front of the resident. His arrogance was ridiculous in proportion to his experience. Another experience I personally had with the same younger male doctor was that there is no way any commonly prescribed medication for a temporary issue (such as mine) to cause side-effects like I had! Everyone has a different body, constitution, weight, liver/processor and it really depends on how sensitive each body is. Oddly, he claimed that my side effect complaints were unfounded. Days later I searched and found a website FDA - testing that showed my side effects were found but not as common as the average person. For anyone to claim that it's not possible or in a patients head/imagination should have their license reviewed and removed from caring for patients!!! This hospital has also knowingly changed my personal records to show that doctors/staff did not mock/make rude notes. I asked for my records and right before I did the "boss lady" who manages public relations and mismanagement of the patients asked me for my full name and literally changed the wording of the entire intake to look professional. She missed a couple in the past visits which were exactly as they have always been...unprofessional comments in their history intake. read more

I have only experienced a short visit for an MRI but it was excellent. The receptionist at the MRI desk was very helpful and went well beyond what was necessary to make us comfortable. She even looked up hotels in the area for us. The tec was informative, gentle, and in every way cheerful and pleasant. My grandfather had a surgery performed at this hospital and has since then been staying at the hospital post-op for about 3 weeks now. We visit him daily to check up on him as he doesn't understand or speak English. Up until Jan 6. 2017 everything was fine. On Jan 6, I went to go visit him and upon arrival, I noticed his room was being cleared out so I assumed they must have moved him to another room. When I asked one of the nurses she went up to the reception area to find out. Later she informed me that he had been transferred to another hospital (without informing the family first). I was taken aback as to how they could transfer a patient without letting their family members know. I told the nurse I knew nothing about this transfer and a second lady came out and muttered "I told them yesterday". My mother and her sister went to visit him the night before until 7:50pm and no one had told them he was being transferred. This is unacceptable. I, being the main contact for him should've been notified of his transfer, especially since he doesn't speak or understand any English. My grandfather has dementia, so imagine the emotional distraught he could've been put through - not knowing what's going on from his routine at the hospital. The carelessness of the caregivers at this facility has caused panic and confusion amongst our family. read more

From the time I entered reception, to the staff on the 2nd floor, to the staff in ultrasound in the basement, everyone very helpful and friendly. Each procedure was done on time. The staff at this facility are heaven sent. It all began at the Emergency room, where my 21 month old son was attended to promptly. I only remember a few of the names: Kara, Christy and there were a few more at the emergency room that made that über stressful moment more manageable. Then there was Dr. J. Lai, she was so calm and sincere which is so important when speaking to a panic-stricken mom. We were transferred to the Pediatrics floor for more monitoring. The compassion remained the same with Sara, Angela and Dr. Riley. Thank you to the staff who we came helped us!!! read more

Very pleased with staff and professionalism at Lion's Gate Hospital but very disappointed with the facility, lack of available rooms, long emergency waits and some basic service standards that could tremendously improve patient's care at a very low cost. I live in California and I know medical insurance is almost next to free in Canada and relatively speaking an excellent quality care. My mother is an elderly lady with many health conditions. She's been in and out of Lion's Gate Hospital 6 or 7 times since 2014. After 5 times of gong to hospital, she was finally assigned a nurse to follow-up with her to make sure she doesn't end up back in the hospital. It was very ineffective. The follow up nurse simply didn't follow-up on what she was supposed to do. Things like following through on tests and to sort out her medicine, I had to call and remind her constantly and even then it wasn't effective. What bothers me the most is lack patient phone in the wards. There is one portable phone in some wards and sometimes nurses answering the phones state that it's for the doctor's use only. Patients should be able to speak to their family members, emotional well-being helps their overall health as well their recovery. This is a very basic need, even prisoners have access to phone, why not patients? An update on this review, my mom was admitted to emergency and even though she had a severe pain, Dr. Horach, the emergency Doctor refused to admit her. I tried to explain to him that my mom can't follow up with her primary doctor due to her old age and condition, but the doctor was uncompromising and to be fair he said he's following procedures. I'm lowering my rating to one star now, This was against and unlike the advise of other doctors that had admitted my mom for the exact same reason.
