I have such mixed feelings I originally went in for an iron infusion and showed the wonderful nurses there that my leg was swelling. Reviewed it did a couple blood test and took me straight over to emergency. I have a history of pulmonary embolism so I was treated appropriately and I felt Safe and informed throughout the admission to hospital. Stayed the night and woke up to a Divine intervention. You know who you are. Went for CT scan which was scheduled at 1045 and I was in and prepped by 1100. Very impressive. Drop off and pick up were spot on. Never left in hallway. Here's where it falls apart. I wasn't in my room when the Dr came on rounds. When I returned to my room I was told I was discharged! I thought that was great because the CT scan must've been clear. I was then told I have a PE. It was in a new area than previously. I asked to speak to the doctor about management asI wasn't comfortable going home. I was at St Pauls last year for 6 days in order to have IV anti coagulants and "clot busters"?After speaking with the doctor i expressed my concern to my nurse who then escalated it to a patient liaison or something. She was so aggressive when she met me and told me I have to leave now because I was discharged and they won't reverse it. If I wanted to be seen again I had to start over regi again at emergency. I was feeling to demoralized to bother. She dismissed me by offering a taxi voucher and yes I accepted it cause I hadn't planned on leaving so abruptly therefore no chariot awaiting me. Here's the kicker @ 1:30 am I had to go to emergency at VGH for severe pain in the leg with dvt. But that's another story. Check it out soon. You won't believe it...or maybe you will.

Really happy so far with what I've seen at this smaller community hospital where I had to take my old dad. Arrived at emergency on advice from his Dr. and had no wait at all on a Friday afternoon. Staff were friendly and attentive and we moved right along. Lots of attention from various people and immediate action on his blocked bladder and swollen feet n legs. Enough with the details but suffice it to say that two days later he's gonna make it! After moving to a regular ward, he's sharing a room but has enough privacy and room to squeeze in a few visitors. Meals are adequate and on time. There's a cafeteria but it's not open all the time so bring your own food supplies. His hospital Dr. has been calling me daily with updates and keeping me informed of how long he expects to stay. They really seem to care and it's comforting. Read the other reviews and you'll see that it's way different than the BIG hospitals. More personal and friendly.

Paul's Hospital but I am convinced it was only because of the care I received at MSJ that I even made it to St.

In the past few years, I've come to St. Paul's Hospital frequently, as some of my specialist…read moredoctors work primarily out of this institution, so I've had many an appointment here. Plus these doctors have often ordered tests here, too (i.e., MRI's, respiratory tests, specialty stress tests and radiology tests and more). Every time, I've been treated respectfully and everyone has been super professional. (I should add, for many years I worked as a paramedic in the States, and as a phlebotomist and EKG tech in major hospitals and doctors' offices alike, and in medical labs. I am quite familiar with the medical field, and my expectations - and I suppose, my standards too - are very high. And I will add that I am the WORST patient too, which adds another element to my experiences as a patient. So when I say that the office staff, X-Ray techs, phlebotomists, respiratory techs, doctors and nurses and aides have all been excellent with me, that says a lot). The other night was my first time going to the ER here. (Long story, don't ask. All is well). As a medic, I know how ERs work. They are hectic, often chaotic spaces with a large element of the unknown going on (a result of the variety and amount of patients there and what their issues are, as well as staffing and more). I was originally going to go to VGH but I checked online and the wait time there was nearly 8 hours whereas at St. Paul's it was 2.5 hours. I'm so glad I went to St. Paul's. Yes, the ER department is run-down and dated. Yes, many of the patients there were either drug addicts or homeless folks (or both), and/or had mental-emotional issues. The walls are dingy, there's no privacy in the waiting room (AT ALL. I found it startling TBH that there was a "blood draw" station in the middle of the waiting room, and I prayed I wouldn't have my bloods drawn here as I am a tough draw and, as mentioned, I am the WORST patient). So, yeah, the accommodations here are definitely NOT plush, nor are they modern. All that said, the staff working here in the ER when I visited were UNBELIEVABLE. As in, unbelievably GOOD. The tech who registered me in, the triage nurse, the radiology tech who brought me back for a CAT scan, and finally the doctor who, thankfully, checked in with me and then had me go into a separate room to discuss their findings (I was fine and could go home. Yeah!). All of them were incredible. SO professional, so on top of everything, very efficient. I know I must have been prioritized fairly high on the ladder, as I was seen, scanned and consulted with and discharged within 90 minutes. I know that is NOT the norm, but I also know I had the potential for having something serious, and they had to rule it out promptly. And they did. And I am ever so grateful. I'll add two things: I saw the doctors and nurses and aides talking to patients and treating them respectfully, whether the patients were drug addicts, homeless folks or well-dressed grandmothers there with their families. We were all treated equally and professionally. Also, I should not that, within the year, St. Paul's is moving to a huge, new, state-of-the-art hospital by Central Station, behind the Science Center. I've seen tours of the new facility on tv and it blows me away, how modern and spacious it is. So the days of the dated, dingy hospital here on Burrard are numbered. Very soon, this new hospital is going to be as wonderful as all the staff who work here.

Good luck finding a pillow in an emergency bed! The walls and furniture have holes in them and maintenance can't keep up. Their H-Vac system was last updated in 1971 and can't be upped anyfurther so it's FREEZING in there. Good luck finding anyone to get you a blanket to put around you. Staff, nurses and doctors are overworked and grumpy. Provicence pays their ER docs per turn around so you don't get to see one for very long. I have several health issues, none of them my own fault, and St. P.'s is the closest hospital to me. I cannot always be diverted to Mt. St. Josephs so have to put up with this hell hole of a hospital. I won't talk about the food because that's too cliqued. I'm almost in tears if I have to go there!

The "Diamond" center houses the outpatient offices for most of the VGH medical specialists and speciality clinics. ATRIUM AND MAIN FLOOR: The outpatient bloodwork station is located on the main floor. So if you need some tests done, look for it near the door facing Laurel street. There is a large auditorium on the main floor. The main floor also houses eateries including Salad Loop, Starbucks coffee, Zookaaz coffee (and sandwiches) and a Sushi bar. There is also a Shoppers Drug Mart and a medical equipment store. The atrium has many tables and benches both inside and out. God forbid you need it, but the security office is also on the main floor. Finally there are two sets of elevators: one set to the parking below and another set to all the floors above. OTHER FLOORS: the second floor houses the UBC medical library as well as a multitude of educational meeting rooms, study tables, and video conferencing rooms. The fourth houses the VCH research institute clinical research unit. The top floors are UBC medicine administration offices and more meeting rooms. The remainder are clinic spaces for specialists and their patients. The waiting rooms are all very open, clean, and since the building is mostly glass, there are good views and lots of light in all patient waiting areas.

I've never been admitted to a hospital from birth till now. I found out nurses were not trained to do the IV needle thing, they learned on the job. So my arms still have hard bumps where the needles didn't go in correctly at the emergency ward and those bumps were water retention or edema. R said my arm was so swollen he had to question the nurses what happened and they immediately removed it. The doctors said they should be gone soon but it has been several weeks now. The ICU nurses and care aides were wonderful. Cheerful and kind. The regular ward nurses were hit and miss in the care. Some were really caring and dedicated, some couldn't be bothered and treat you like it was a big hardship to ask them for help. The doctors do come round very often everyday to check on me. Same with the physio and occupational therapist. They came everyday except Sunday to do rehab with me. I had to do a lot of tests and the hospital staff are generally very patient and kind. I also had to go to another hospital for a test/procedure and a nurse escorted me there and back. My experience with the healthcare system (from calling 911 for the ambulance) to the emergency and to discharge is positive. Not the horror story I read about in the news. The ambulance came within minutes and my wait in emergency was under half an hour. I think my condition was really bad and close to dying so the triage worked. I am super thankful to the team of healthcare personnel who worked tirelessly to make sure I am ok. I opted for outpatient rehab and they are located inside the Optimization Centre. It is still a long journey to full or 90% recovery, they estimated about a year, so I guess I'll still be visiting the hospital for rehab frequently until I'm given the all clear. There is a cafeteria here with Starbucks coffee. The breakfast sandwich is terrible. The hospital food is also bad/unappetizing. The sandwich and wrap are ok. There is also an area where you can borrow or leave books.

For the most part, the nurses were nice (except for this one nurse that seems to be all over the place with organizations). In terms of my treatments, they put me on IV antibiotics for 2 weeks before deciding to put me on the pill version for my infection & giving me a limited amount of hydromorphone if my hip joint continue to be an issue. All and all, while my stay wasn't terrible, but my only criticism here is: 1) make sure your fruits aren't moldy (got a serving of moldy grapes once and makes me wonder if other patients noticed it)... seriously this could've gone sideways for the hospital QUICK.... 2) Upgrade your hospital's electrical system because my room and the adjacent rooms just wasn't able to handle the amount of electricity needed for the AC because of the slight heat wave we had during the first weekend we were there (8th till 11th). It kept tripping the circuit breaker due to the sheer amount of power. This could've gone quite wrong very fast depending on the circumstances. Sure this happened in the older building but that's still no excuse. The only reason why I'm giving this place 2 stars instead of 1 is because of the nurses I kept seeing that for the most part were pretty friendly (guess I'm lucky given some of the other reviews).
