    Lovely distillery & brewery

If you are craving a slice of Heaven while in Victoria Canada, Macaloney's can't be missed! With the friendliest and most knowledgeable staff, you'll find craft beer (from crushable lagers to layered IPA's) and smooth whiskeys to tempt your palate. During our tour, Emily was a gem as she shared various barleys and hops that go into the beers we tasted. They even support other local brewery's by sharing their tanks and equipment. For whiskey lovers, while Macaloney's is early in their aging process, the future is bright as you savor the experience, from the thick legs as you swirl, to the promise of the nose, and the smooth flavor as it warms your soul. Canadians know their beer and Macaloney's is exceptional in the crafting of beer as well as a passion for whiskey.

    One Whisky we loved.

We were in town on a cruise and the yacht offered a special distillery tour and chocolate tasting. So we booked it immediately and looked forward to the experience. We got to the distillery in our small group of 8. There were a few other's inside enjoying the drinks. The staff had set up a special table for us with 3 tastings with the chocolates paired with each sip. Ocean was our hostess and guide. She was the best. Very happy, fun and explained why the chocolates paired so well with each drink. We thoroughly enjoyed her. After our special tasting and getting to know our other yacht traveler's, we waited a short time for the tour. A few other guests joined us on the tour and we set off for the back of the distillery. Ocean explained the process, let us smell the peat, and we tasted a bit more. Then we moved on to their beers which were equally as delicious. We enjoyed learning about the distillery, the owners, the process and getting to know the fabulous staff. Definitely visit if you are in the area. Very cool place with an incredibly happy staff. Why wouldn't you be if you worked in a distillery and brewery. Macaloney's is a real treasure off the beaten path in Victoria. Thank you to everyone on staff, we had a great visit.

Our last brewery stop was at Victoria Caledonian Brewery & Distillery. Both the distillery and their brewery, Twa Dogs, is under one roof. They claim to be Canada's first equity crowdfunded brewery-distillery. You can become an owner for as little as $250! We dropped in on a Saturday afternoon (around 4:00pm) and it was packed. Their tours ($20.95 to $49.00 per person) are extremely popular. The tasting room is spacious with three large communal tables to sit at along with a few seats at the bar. Merchandise (umbrellas, glassware, hats, t-shirts, etc.) is spread throughout the room. Their happy hour (Monday to Friday, 3:00pm to close) has to be one the best I've seen in a long time. Only $5.00 pints and flights! Super adorable that they allow dogs inside; two were chilling with their owners. - Flight ($9.00 for 4) - we tried the white stout (seasonal), chili chocolate milk stout, parting kiss bourbon barrel age and rapture of folly cherry sour. White stout was like a light coffee lager. Chili milk stout had a hint of spice at the end. Bourbon ale was the smoothest we've sampled for a barrel aged beer. B liked the cherry sour the most but I thought it was just so-so. Another decent brewery but none of their beers really distinguished themselves from the rest.

    Beautiful whiskeys!

Talk about hitting out of the park with the first stop! Whistle Buoy is located in a Market Square that's a beautiful open air area surrounded by shops, boutiques, restaurants, assorted businesses, and vast tracts of land with chairs and tables. Since it's surrounded by buildings on all four sides the wind would be challenged to ruffle your hair once inside. For this stop of the Ale Trail excursion we were each allowed one glass (not a taster...a full 12oz glass) of one brew. They have roughly a dozen taps that run the typical gamut of beer styles. I immediately gravitated toward the Shaft Coffee Stout. Not my usual go-to, (I'm usually more of an IPA / Pale Ale kinda guy) but something about "Dark. Coffee. Chocolate" grabbed my attention (Here's the part where Jim has an advantage. Jim's wife doesn't drink beer, so Jim gets her selection, too, so she (ok, I) chose the Froth Hazy Pale for hers (ok, for me).) I didn't expect the highlight of the excursion to be the very first beer I had, but the Shaft Coffee Stout was quite possibly the best beer I've ever had. It was smooth and rich and had such an amazing flavor. Honestly, it was more like dessert. I'm not saying my wife's beer (ok, my 2nd) wasn't awesome, it's just that the Shaft set the bar REALLY high. ( I'm just talkin' 'bout Shaft! ) Our group sat in the outdoor, covered beer garden, the weather was slightly overcast, and we were surrounded by like-minded beer lovers (except my wife, who donates to my cause.) As we sat the Market Square was busy with life as people walked their dogs, visited businesses, and a group of elementary school kids was escorted through the square. Sometimes it's nice to sit back and watch the world go by. The restrooms (gender neutral, thank you) are small...ok, tiny. There's barely enough room to change your mind. I do have to call attention to two things, though. First, it has the tiniest sink I've ever seen. Surely this thing had to be custom made. Second, they have a Code of Conduct posted on the wall, which I genuinely appreciated. Nothing outrageous, just a focus on respect and common decency. If I were able to get Shaft Coffee Stout at home I'd never leave home (actually I would just to get more Shaft Coffee Stout). It was only a brief visit to Whistle Buoy Brewing, but if I ever found myself living in Victoria, BC, there is no doubt this is where I'd hang out.

Better to sit outside for our three flights than sit inside. The Ube Bae Bae Bay was the winner for the drafts. Had a pretty distinct taste while my family enjoyed their IPAs, lagers and porters. They offer cans to go and games to entertain the little ones while the adults relax a little. Service was quick with her pouring the drinks just as they opened at noon. Even their NA drinks were good too. Will be a while since I'll return so have an extra drink for me in the meantime! Cheers!

The beer that I got didn't disappoint in the slightest. I had the Hoyne Pilsner which was so good! Very refreshing for the muggy summer day we were experiencing. Characteristics in this flavor profile are hoppy with some sweetness and a clean finish. The beer is smooth and also very light bodied which makes this a perfect summer beer to enjoy and if you can have more than one of.

After reading about their products before the trip, daughter and I were anxious to try them. And though we never got to the actual brewery location, we had no problem finding their brews for sale in liquor stores, and to enjoy in pubs throughout the city. Our very first tastes were via pub 'flights' of draught products, and they sure scored high on our taste tests. 'Dark Matter', a wonderfully, dark and delicious ale, became one of our trip favourite brews. I found out recently that the government liquor stores here (Vancouver & vicinity) were carrying some of their products. So when out to catch some Christmas cheer, daughter and I looked for it, and were very happy to find, and be able to catch six-packs of both 'Dark Matter', and 'Shine On' (an India Pale Ale). I was fortunate, and able to purchase the last on the shelves -- and when home, split them, so we could have tastes of each for Christmas. Dark Matter sure lived up to our memories, and Shine On was such a delightful, new taste treat. So glad these wonderful brews can now be found here -- it will definitely ensure not having such long times between tastes of Hoyne's brews from now on!!
