The captain and Kai worked hard to make sure we saw whales, seals, and sea lions. It was an amazing day!

I would really recommend doing a tour with Vancouver whale watch. We got a shuttle from the hotel. If you're not staying close by, I would recommend getting their shuttle because it was easy and our driver Levi was nice. We took the large zodiac tour during the month of September. The large zodiac was nice because it had closed glass sides and top. We were shielded from water spray, but could open the windows and had a good view. The weather was perfect the day we went, but beware sometimes it gets rescheduled due to weather. Other people on our boat were talking about how their trip the day before was canceled due to wind so be conscious of this when scheduling. Our nature guides name was James, our captain was James, and our boat assistant was Brendan. The boat ride was smooth, the guide was very knowledgeable, and we were successful in finding whales! We saw 4 killer whales and 4 humpback whales, along with lots of sea lions and a seal. The views were beautiful. The packed lunch that you can add on was mediocre, but it was nice having something to eat on the boat because we were out on the water for 5 hours. There is a bathroom on the boat, but it can be hard to use because of the waves. Overall, it was a great experience that I would definitely do again! read more

Wow! A check mark on our bucket list. Our family enjoyed the whale watching trip a few days ago during our Vancouver vacation. The check-in process was easy peasy. Our guide, Joan was informative and helpful. We were fortunate to see a pod of orcas in their natural habitat doing what they do. We even saw chainsaw, a 45 yr old orca. I appreciated that our boat stayed close enough to see, but far enough to be respectful of the whales' space. We spent around an hour following the orcas, saw them swimming and frolicking. The crew took our group to get up-close to sea lions and harbor seals nearby. What a lovely tour, worth every penny. Thank you for making a dream a reality. read more

Had the most amazing experience! The crew were absolutely delightful, accommodating, and knowledgeable. Truly one of the best experiences! It's always a good sign when you can see that people love what they do. They did everything they could to make sure we saw whales and knew exactly what they were doing. We got to see 4 humpback whales and if we didn't have to head back, they probably would've let us stay out there longer to see more. The staff at Vancouver Whale Watch is great. If you come during the summer, do dress warmly and use the recommended windbreakers. We took snacks, sunscreen, and plenty of water on the 4 hour trip. If you have long hair, bring hair ties. The staff is super nice and accomodating. We missed our original boat ride because I inadvertently calendared the wrong day, but Vancouver Whale Watch found another day that our family could join so that our fare would not be wasted. Nonetheless, I'm not sure I would do this again. We saw two whales, but they were pretty far away, came up about 5-6 times, and we mostly saw dorsal fins and a few flips of the flipper. Unlike another reviewer who said they got to spend about an hour watching whale action, we spent maybe 15-20 minutes. Then they took us to see harbor seals and bald eagles. I was very pleased with Vancouver Whale Watch and would take another whale watch tour with them. We went through the Southern Gulf Islands near Vancouver Island and oh my were they breath-taking!! In the beginning of the trip we weren't seeing any whales just seals, but our guide said they are in contact with other whale watching tours in the area so when one group sees them they contact the other companies and tours. This is so ideal because there is A LOT of area to cover!! When we finally got to seeing some whales there was about 4 different pods interacting with each other. So we got to see a lot of different behaviors such as breaching, pectoral slapping/waving and tail lobbing. We stayed with the whales for a little over an hour before heading back (which was really nice!) We rode on the Explorathor, which is their biggest boat. Thankfully they still had the top on so we could close the windows and stay relatively warm since it felt about 30 degrees Fahrenheit, that high speed wind hitting your face really freezes you up! But once you slowed down to see the whales or other marine life you could pull the Windows up and get a perfect view. The captain does respect the Whale Watch guidelines. He slowed down when he was about 400 yards away and would shut off the engine. So when the whales swam by the boat they were not breaking any laws. I recommend to bring warm clothes, some snacks and lunch. The boat does offer bottled water so no need to make your bag super heavy with bottles. read more

HORRIBLE Captain is a jerk. Staff failed to tell me they had a shuttle service from Vancouver when they booked it and took my money. I found that out after stumbling on it in the website. They didn't answer the phone when I called to ask before I left. Then when I was in the middle of getting there on transit they finally return my call to say they will pay for a cab when it was already too late. Finally arrived after a screwed up transit trip thanks to Google. I arrived and when I told them to tell people ALL THE INFORMATION BEFORE TAKING PEOPLE'S MONEY the captain says I'm not welcome!! What a bunch of Jackasses! I took a night off of work and went through alot of difficulty for NOTHING!! read more

They guarantee that you will see a whale but read the fine print. The catch is you can come back as many times until you do. But like us traveling from Florida in the United States it will be very unlikely we will find ourselves in Vancouver again. Turned out to be a very expensive boat ride. Disappointed. read more

I am not joking when I say this: On my deathbed, I will think of the wonderful things I've done in my life. Pictures from my Vancouver Whale Watch trip will flash in front of my eyes. I will have a smile on my face. This was one of the coolest experiences of my life. I went the summer of 2008 with my 8 year old son- who had a great time too. We saw eagles, seals, otters, and of course, whales. Orcas- tons of them. It was magical. (see photos I posted). I think I paid around $200 for both me & my son. Totally worth it. The trip lasted for about 5-6 hours. They took us miles and miles south into US waters. The staff was professional & friendly. I felt safe & secure. You're probably reading this thinking how your whole life you wanted to go on a whale watching trip- but it seemed kinda expensive. Trust me- the money is worth it. I would have paid double for this trip. Can't wait to drive 3000 miles across the country again to visit Vancouver & go on another boat trip. When I was there, I got my son an official VWW jacket. After a few years, he grew into it and still proudly wears it today. I love that jacket because it reminds us of a dream come true! Thanks Vancouver Whale Watch! We had an amazing trip with our family and went on two trips, of which the second trip which did not charge us because they guarantee whale sightings and will take you for as many times as it takes. We got to see probably over 50 killer whales within the Pacific Ocean near Richmond BC, 1 walrus on a bell, lots of bald eagles, Heron, and much more. At one time we were even 5 or 10 feet away from whales diving near us and some of them doing some dances and jumps out of the water. Absolutely amazing lifetime experience and recommended for anyone who likes animals, nature or the ocean. Unfortunately no whale sightings on our 9AM ride aboard the (smaller) Strider I today. The staff in general were nice enough although no one went above & beyond to be particularly helpful or informative. Company policy is to issue a return voucher if you don't see whales. When preparing our voucher, I was told that vouchers were only good for the larger boats. I didn't mind the policy, but my husband & I had originally booked the larger boat & they upsold us on the smaller boat when we arrived because of a cancellation so I asked if they could refund the difference ($20) since we hadn't been informed that vouchers weren't valid for the smaller boats when they changed our reservation. In response to my question, the founder/owner did a lot of mansplaining about his company history, policies & rates. He also made offhanded comments about me "kicking up a fuss" & "threatening" him with a yelp review. I respect the company policy, but felt belittled and uncomfortable with how the owner spoke to me. He eventually apologized, but what an awful interaction on top of an already disappointing day. The worst part is shelling out $300 to NOT see whales & anticipating dealing with this company again to redeem my voucher. I imagine if you see whales, it's a delight. Just keep in mind that if you pay for the shuttle and/or smaller boat & don't see whales, you eat those fees because they're not included in your return voucher. read more

We had a lot of fun! It took us about an hour and 45 mins to get to the location where they had spotted whales. We saw two families of orcas. We even got to the the baby whale that is gray! We stayed with the whales for about an hour. They stay a little bit back from the whales which I'm sure is the right way to go. I just couldn't get great pics with my phone from there. My friend got some good pics with a better camera. We also saw sea harbour seals and bald eagles! The staff was great. Very friendly and knowledgeable. They provided water and granola bars. You can buy a boxed lunch from them but you can also just pack your own lunch. But definitely bring food. It took about 5 hours total. The website says people rarely get seasick. I tend to get seasick so I took dramamine to make sure. I'm glad I did because it was choppier than was described. The trick is to take it for several days before you go. i learned that tip in Hawaii and I haven't had motion sickness since! Great day! read more

This was one of the most breathtaking experiences in Vancouver that I have endured. The visit with Vancouver Whale Watch was amazing, and we were extremely lucky that morning. The visit can take between three to five hours, but our visit encompassed a varied amount of sea-life and mammals. The visit starts out at 11am, with free parking around the Stevenston Fisherman's Wharf. We were also lucky with the weather, as it was raining in the morning but right after we reached outside the reef, the weather was extremely great. Shortly after heading out to sea (perhaps within 1 hour towards the inlet), we reached 15 transient orcas killer whales, and was able to follow the pod for several hours until returning back closer between Vancouver and Vancouver Island, to observe several Sea Lions beaching, one bald eagle perched onto an abandoned lifeguard stand, and a tonne of Seals just waiting to become whale biscuits. We also saw a great migration of a flock of rare white birds, that I did not catch the name of. Remember to check the Vancouver Whale Watch website, when we went, it was the Canadian thanksgiving weekend, and they were offering a 10% off coupon, therefore, it was worth the discount. This experience was wonderful! I've been in love with killer whales and have dreamed about seeing them in the wild for a very long time now. This tour was wonderful, they showed us a bunch of islands, where we saw expensive homes and beautiful scenery. We also saw harbor seals and 6 bald eagles. The best part was seeing the killer whales. We got as close as we could without breaking any laws! It was magical, we saw two transient pods and one very rambunctious newborn. Our tour left a little late because a family arrived late and we waited for them. But other than that it was great. We also rode the explorathor II (one of the larger vessels). Dress warmly cause you never know what the weather will be and bring snacks and water. The staff is friendly and knowledgable. We rode the shuttle to the Vancouver whale watch location and it made our lives ten times easier!! It's an additional 15 dollars (round trip) and it picks you up at certain spots in Vancouver, it was so worth it. Lastly, if you have a chance to explore Stevenson, please do. This town meant a lot to me because it is where they filmed once a upon a time (the abc show). They have a walking tour of all the stores that they converted for the show! A must do for anyone in and around Vancouver!!! We saw eagles and sea lions on our way out to the whales. We drove around for about 3 hours searching for orcas, without finding them. Then, success! One of the other tour boats found them and radioed around so we zoomed off to find them too. We saw 9 killer whales and it was wonderful, it really was. So happy I went! Cons: can be a long day, depending on how long it takes to find the whales. It is also cold, so take lots of layers. Pros: killer whales were awesome, the scenery was also truly stunning. Tips: This company also have a shuttle going from downtown Vancouver if you don't have a car, which is handy. Cost was $120 per person, which was cheaper than those leaving from Vancouver Island. read more

Whale-watching is one of the most wonderful thing I've had the privilege of doing in my life. My husband got us birthday tickets for a Vancouver Whale Watch excursion and from beginning to end, it was an amazing experience. We arrived at the check-in office 30m before boat-boarding time, filed in some paperwork and were given a $1 discount at a deli to bring lunch on the boat. We then boarded the boat and immediately were greeted by the lovely Solé who was our guide during the entire time. 30min of sailing in and we saw our first humpback whale! We then continued sailing into the islands and quickly found an orcas family that we followed for a couple hours. They were truly magnificent animals. Giant, gracious, coming up quite close to the boat. The boat's observatory deck was a great spot to watch them up-close and breathe in the fresh air. Coming back to the marina, we saw dozens of sea-lions and seals lounging on rocks and taking in the sun. What a trip! pro-tip: Do not buy lunch at the recommended deli. it was absolutely mediocre and pretty expensive. The boat provides water and granola bars. Seat in an enclosed area at the front of the boat but make sure you're seated next to windows you can open/close. Tip your guide! read more

I guess it's hit or miss. We did come across a family of four orca's, but all we saw were their dorsal fins (?) come up out of the water here and there. The kids (9 & 12) were bored after seeing the whales fins a few times, and were finding other ways to entertain themselves. We left the orca's after about an hour to find a humpback whale - crew could've told us it was Moby Dick and we would've been, "ya, cool" cause this whale just kind of would surface and you'd be like "was that the whale?!?!" A little splash. Later we were told, it was porpoises we'd seen on the last splash - couldn't tell the difference. Do get there early if you go; we were on the tail end of boarding and didn't get seats up front - had to sit in back where the only view is off to one side of the boat. The good thing was we got access to the top first, but then they tell you to give everyone a turn - we didn't have seats so it didn't seem fair that we should have to leave the to top when all the people who have great seats come up top. Like I said, hit or miss. I'm sure there are great days but big bummer if you pay the big bucks and don't see much. Side note - the smaller zodiacs were definitely getting closer to the whales than our big boat could get to. Don't know if the bigger boats have to keep a farther distance? We took a group of 9 on a tour. I made the reservations months in advance and they were ready for us when we got there. They even worked with me on the price. They give you weather gear to wear - pants, jacket, hat and gloves. It gets very cold out there so it was nice to have these! There are restrooms available inside the shop. The boat was clean, the captain very nice. The lady who helped the captain out and kept us informed was AWESOME! She was so nice and told us all about the pods in the area. She walked around to make sure everyone was comfortable and talked to everyone as well as using the mic to keep us updated. They even put a mic in the water to listen to the whales. We saw a ton of whales. It felt like we were surrounded by them. What I thought was nice is that we were close enough to get good pictures, but not so close that we disturbed the whales. They handed out snacks and waters as well. With all of the whales, the nice employees and the beautiful scenery, I highly recommend this to all ages. read more

Beautiful boat ride through the islands. We saw bald eagles, harbor seals, porpoises, and feral goats! First time only one brief spout from a humpback. So they generously counted it as No Whale and let us go again. Second trip we saw several humbacks goofing around in the straight. They were spouting, rolling, slapping water with flippers and tails and even bobbed up. The ride on the Explorer and Explorer Express is not too bumpy. Guide very thorough. You will be out long enough to get hungry. We bought the lunch (a good sandwich, apple, cookies). You can bring your own food in a back pack. Wear long pants and closed toes shoes like they recommend! There is a toilet on both of the big boats. Do NOT try to go in the office (too crowded). Check in an hour early so you have time to trade an ID for parking pass and then you walk back about 4 blocks from your car. Check out your water gear before you go park so you beat the Vans from Vancouver. If you want a great seat on the boat once you have your gear you can go wait on the dock near the boats to get on first. Don't obcess with your camera. Just live in the moment! read more

We had a fantastic experience with this company. The staff were extremely polite and friendly and everything went smoothly. They made sure we all had suits that fitted and that everyone was sat with their family in the boat. We went on a Zodiac that has spaces for 12 so we sat as a three and a one which was fine. We could all see the Orca whales and were lucky enough to have them come up right next to the boat - amazingly fortuitous and breathtakingly magical. We also saw bald eagles, porpoise and seals but to be honest we mainly wanted to see the Orca's! Overall, conditions were calm, weather beautiful, the tour was well organised and good, the guide informative and the captain made it fun and not too bumpy. read more

Amazing experience, these guys are pros! We saw eagles, seals, sea lions and had a magnificent time, about an hour and a half, with the Orcas. The whales were in a playful mood so we got treated to a real show - they spyhopped (head out of the water), breached (full body out of the water) and one even flipped its half-eaten lunch (an unfortunate seal) into the air with its tail - real nature documentary material. They got very close to the boat as well and swam directly underneath us at a couple points - they were so close that some of the younger ones aboard even stuck their arms out in the hopes of touching them, but alas, no Free Willy magic ensued. I am a local so I utilized their coupon in the Entertainment book, but even without the discount, this is fantastic entertainment value for your money. I have not been out with any of the other companies that do whale-watching tours from the Vancouver area, but the other companies' boats were on the water with us, and I have to say that our boats were by far the nicest. The cover was on and it was a nice day so the temperature was very pleasant inside the boat, but the windows also slid up to provide a perfect picture-taking vantage point - a feature that seemed to be missing on the other boats. We went on the May long weekend, and I don't think I would recommend going much earlier than this due to the generally awful spring weather we have here, but they do open for the season in April. All in all, a childhood dream fulfilled and I have amazing photos to remember the magic - highly recommended for both visitors and locals! read more

It was such a wonderful experience with Vancouver Whale Watch today. The staff was very nice. We got to the office at 8:45 with two kids and were on the boat at 9am for departure. It was rush but they were being super helpful. The boat was so clean, even the bathroom! It was very steady as well. The guide was nice and she gave us detailed and useful information. The captain followed the orcas very well and we were able to go side by side with the whales for a long time. He only stopped and turned back because we were about to cross US water. I highly recommend them to anyone who is planning to go whale watching. We didn't know it could get so cold in the boat even in 27degree weather on a sunny day. So dress warm. read more

While visiting Vancouver my family and I thought it would be fun to go on a whale watching tour. On the way out of the harbor the waves kept growing and the captain never backed off of the throttle and about 10 minutes after we pulled out of the harbor a huge wave came over the bow and dove head on down under the water and shattered the plastic windows in the front. Water flooded in and luckily the boat surfaces after a frightening 10-15 seconds and everyone onboard was scared to death. I can now say that I am terrified now of the sea although I have enjoyed boating almost my whole life. And worst of all, after we got back to the dock no one helped us or said sorry to us, which I found unbeleivable because the boat almost capsized. I hate to talk bad about anyone or anything but this was one of the worst expieriences of my whole life and I do not recommend this service at all. read more

Good things: they honored a coupon that I had seen online even though I didn't have it. The lunch was pretty tasty (though over priced), the guide was fantastic with a lot of knowledge and answered all of my questions Bad things: it was freezing cold! I am from Calgary AB so know a few things about the cold and they did warn that it is colder at sea then on land, so I was prepared for a few degrees colder, but not sub zero! They provide big yellow rain suits, hats and mitts but they should have warned people to bring their winter boots as well. By the end my toes were blue in my hiking shoes and regular socks. Also my face was frozen so a scarf would have helped too. The trip lasted about 5 hours and the majority was spent traveling at high speeds through the water. I knew we wouldn't be seeing whales the entire time we were out but in the entire 5 hours we were with the whales about 20 mins. On the way a few people spotted some seals and dolphins but we never even slowed to see them....it was all about the whales which were very far away. All in all, it was an experience that you have to have at least once but this company should warn people a bit better on what to expect- 4.5 hours traveling through freezing sea air with the wind blasting in your face and about 20-30 mins of whale watching. With this information I feel like I would have been better prepared or at least brought a book. This experience would not be suitable for children. The two children on board looked absolutely frozen and did not care on bit once we got to the whales. Not worth the $100 those parents spent! read more

Though I went with Vancouver Whale Watch, before planning a trip it's good to know a little Whale watching trips from both Vancouver, and from Victoria on Vancouver Island actually go to find the same 'population' of whales. The whales range through the area, though they are most commonly found down near Victoria. As a result trips from Victoria may be shorter (so might be better if you are not keen on spending hours on the water), but may not go all the way up to the North end of the range should the whales be there. The Northern based tours might involve more hours on the water (for the same amount of viewing), but are set up to go down south on a regular basis and so may guarantee sightings. Vancouver Whale Watch have a choice of two types of vessel (which do both have very basic bathrooms): semi-open, which are apparently a lot of fun, and (slightly) more sedate closed boats. They also say you shouldn't go if you have back or neck problems. I have them but when I asked my doctor her reply was 'you can go whale watching?! Take a painkiller! The right advice I think, though I did find parts of the trip rough, even though I choose the closed boat. If you have problems also don't sit in the bow: the guy sitting there on my trip got bounced right out of his seat at one point! So, the trip it actually lasted around 6 hours I believe, as we headed right down to the sea off Victoria. On the way we got wonderful views of the islands. We also saw wildlife including seals and porpoise. The pilot spotted an elephant seal, a rare sight apparently, but it dived before anyone else saw it. Excitement grew as we got closer to where the whales were reported and saw other whale watching boats heading at full speed in the same direction. Finally we arrived. Watching is done to strict rules that govern where boats can go in relation to the whales, when they can and can't approach (according to what the whales are doing at the time) etc. There were several boats there and we took turns going in closer and then sitting dead in the water to allow the whales to come closer if they choose. To be honest it was a bit confusing as we often spun, so I totally lost all sense of direction and it seemed they were coming from all over! We got to see whales spyhopping, breaching and swimming right under the boat. We were actually very lucky: I later heard that they thought the whole 'Southern Population' of around 70 whales was there, and the pair we saw swimming together were probably mating. After that it was several more hours back to base All but a couple of the passengers fell asleep! Seriously, they were all konked out, leaning on each other. Apparently it happens on every trip! LOL! I passed the time reading some books they had on board and learnt lots apparently there are 3 populations around Vancouver. North and South 'Resident' populations, and a 'Transient' population which ranges throughout the area. The populations don't interbreed, and some people think that the two types are actually diverging into two different species. Residents feed on fish, while Transients eat sea mammals. Also family is incredibly important to Orca. They stay with their birth pod throughout their lives, whether male or female. Different pods within the population meet up for mating, which was what was happening the day I was there. I'm not absolutely totally against keeping whales in aquariums, but I now think keeping single orca, as was often done in the past, was a terrible mistake and tragedy. Staff were lovely, though I have to admit I was too busy watching to take notice of what they were saying while we were near the whales! They also provided crystalised ginger for those that needed it, which I think was a nice touch! read more

First tip: if you're from far away on vacation, don't do this on your last day. If you don't see any whales they'll let you book again for free, or take 50% off a gift shop purchase, but there are no refunds (the rebook offer does not expire). So give yourself some time to take another crack. We got skunked on our trip, so that makes for a very long five hour boat ride, and you can only spend so much time looking at harbor seals. There was no lunch provided, so bring food. They did provide bottled water and a granola bar about midway through. Prepare for cool weather even in the summer. There is free parking, but it's a few blocks from the dock. The crew and staff were very nice, the boat and facilities were clean and we'll cared for. It's not cheap, so if there's no chance you can make it back, I'd think hard about it. The 50% off discount will not be worth it. read more

Amazing!!! Beautiful scenery and wildlife!! Saw orcas, seals, harbor porpoise, and majestic bald eagles!!! Staff were friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. The business was very organized and through even giving discount coupons for lunch at the deli they pointed us to nearby. The price was also the lowest we found and we researched for an hour. The boats are also mostly covered so we were never too cold! The village around the marina is also adorable with lots of great gift shops, restaurants, and ice cream parlors. I loved my whale watching experience!! My friend and I went on the Explorathor. The top deck feels AMAZING! I liked being able to taste the sea breeze, and the rocky moments were kind of exciting because I haven't been on a boat in awhile. I also like the upper deck, because not many people can stomach the wind so it is great for loners like me. We saw eagles, Orcas, and Minke whales. My only complaint was that we didn't stay with the orcas as long as I would like... but everyone else seemed like they were ready for the next thing, so I understand. Had a great experience! We were staying in Vancouver and they have a comfortable shuttle that picks you up in the city and brings you directly to the office and boat loading. They also have jackets for you to wear on the boats. Once we were out on the water we got updates about what landmarks and scenic places we were passing. The guide was friendly but didn't talk for the whole ride so we could just enjoy the sights. We tracked 4 orcas and they circled a small island for quite a while and we were able to see them clearly many times. On the way back we also stopped in various places to see other wildlife like sea lions and heron. read more

I came to Vancouver from Toronto for one day, specifically to go whale watching. My boyfriend booked the trip in advance so we only went off online reviews when choosing which charter we wanted to take. I am so pleased we made the right choice with Vancouver Whale Watch. Everything was effortless and comfortable and we were able to see 7 orca whales and one humpback whale within the 4hr time period which was far more than I was expecting. Our tour guide Andy was amazing and was clearly very interested in the whales which was such a great energy to have when going for your first time. This was such a phenomenal experience that is worth every penny. I would 100% recommend them to anyone looking to go whale watching, and I will for sure be coming back again. This past weekend we went on a whale-watching trip with Vancouver Whale Watch. People think that the best place to see whales is from Vancouver Island, but from our research we learned that this company goes to the same location visited by trips leaving from Victoria. The boat captain and naturalist on-board were great. The water was a little rough, but they kept asking if everyone was okay and offered candied ginger, water, and granola bars to those who needed it. They have good communication with other boats and companies, so we were able to zero in on the whales easily, and moved the boat a number of times so we could be better views as the whales moved along. I had a lot of fun! It was a beautiful clear day, and there was no afternoon tour, so we stayed out on the water all day. It was pretty choppy that day, but the captain was great about keeping our boat (Explorathor II) steady. Saw three orcas, a few minke whales, and four or so beautiful bald eagles. Overall, great time! So much more convenient than going out to Victoria, and we saw the exact same whales as the Victoria companies. read more
