Terrible. The people here assume things about you before you're even seen. The medicine given for a broken bone or dislocated ligament is naproxen which is ridiculous, and the referral for MRI and CT is absolutely unreasonable. The doctors and especially the nurses at Vanderbilt are truly an amazing group of caregivers. The ED can be very, very crowded, yet the staff will see every newcomer as if they were their own mother. All patients are triaged and given a bed as soon as one becomes available. I highly recommend Vanderbilt University Medical Center as one of the best hospitals in Tennessee. read more

I can only speak to my experience, but Vanderbilt Emergency saved my life. I went in with a suspected ectopic pregnancy and thankfully the Vanderbilt Midwives had called ahead for me. Yes, it's crowded; yes, you might have a wait depending on the severity of your case. However, I found my experience to be fairly efficient - immediate blood draws in triage; maybe an hour wait to get to an incredibly thorough ultrasound, and the tech ran my results to the radiologist immediately; by the time I got back to a CFU room, I was surrounded by staff telling me that the radiologist sent out a "critical" alert for my ectopic. From there things moved fluidly - I was put in a private room, an OBGYN surgeon came down to consult, I was moved to the surgery floor, and another surgery was bumped so I could have my fallopian tube removed before it fully ruptured. Absolutely stellar, well-informed care. I'm beyond grateful to be alive, and grateful for the expertise of the specialists at Vanderbilt. read more

HOLY $h!+ what an insane joke of an ER department. While I understand that emergent cases vary, and this is a hub for a multitude of ailments (both real and perceived).. I had heard nothing but good things about Vanderbilt. "This is the mecca" "this is where people go when you need answers" bullshit. Tennessee has THE ABSOLUTE WORST HEALTHCARE IN THE COUNTRY. I moved my disabled mom in with me 2 years ago bc she fell in the bathtub and laid there for 4 hours because she couldn't get up. She has received nothing short of medical malpractice the entire time she's lived here. Her health has declined so much in the past two years, she is physically unrecognizable. She went from 110lbs to 88lbs in less than 2 months, she was vomiting multiple times a day, couldn't keep anything down. Still can't gain the weight back. She has seizures, TIAs, sjogrens disease, hypoglycemia so bad she has a seizure if she doesnt eat every 2 hours, osteoporosis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, degenerative disc disease, migraines, etc etc etc. I took her to Lewisburg ER bc I thought she was having a stroke. She coukdnt orient to place or time.. but the time i got her to the ER, she was "fine" according to them. She wasn't, but they did find a myocardial infarction.. they didn't think to mention that, they wrote on her chart "probably old" and sent her home. She has diminished reflexes on her right side, NONE on her left. She can't feel the left side of her body - for the past 3 months. She fell 44 times in one month. She has SIGNIFICANT mental decline. She had a 2" knot on her head when her PT cleared and released her from her balance therapy at home, saying she was fine. Recently, she's been having these insanely intense headaches very fast onset, lasts for about 1-3 minutes, makes her groan in agony, she loses her vision, her balance, and sometimes her bowels. ER wouldn't even listen to her chief complaint. She has lost all feeling in the left side of her body, the papers she gets at the ER say "if you're having ANY of these symptoms, go to the ER".. she has at least 6 of the scary symptoms and the ER may as well just tell her to go fuck herself. They ignored her for TEN HOURS, did a urinalysis, gave her a mild muscle relaxer and sent her home after 10 hours. She can't feel when she needs to use the bathroom. Her rectum literally falls out while she's standing, the ER told her it's a hemorrhoid. It's not. I was a combat medic. I worked in ERs. I worked alongside surgeons I would have reported for malpractice if they treated ANY patient the way my mom has been treated. I promise it's not a hemorrhoid. She is having severe cognitive decline. No one cares. When she broke her wrist (osteoporosis) they took the cast off before the bone was healed and she is still in pain, can't close her hand. My mom usually takes 4-6 months to heal a broken bone due to her autoimmune issues. But again, docs said she's fine.. you know, bc they've obviously lived in her body for 61 years so they know what they're talking about. When she cuts herself, just a tiny cut.. it takes over a month and a half to heal. But no one will listen. Suck it up, "we've seen worse" let me show you the boo boo I got when I was 7, it's basically the same thing. Due to the osteoporosis, my mom has significant bone loss. Due to the untreated consistent vomiting, she is skin and bones. She is physically unrecognizable even to me, the drastic changes that have taken place over the part 2 years are terrifying. I'm watching my mother wither and die in front of my eyes. Due to the neurological decline and dementia, my once photographic memory having, insanely intelligent mother can't even find the right words and slurs when she speaks. Vanderbilt treated her like a drug addict. My mom barely even takes Tylenol. She needs a rheumatologist, osteopath, neurologist, orthopedist, and a PCP who actually gets someone to cover down when he goes on paternity leave. You people are a joke. Maury County is a joke. Vanderbilt is a joke. Tennessee Healthcare is a joke. I hope every last one of you experiences EVERY problem my poor mother has and you get the SAME TREATMENT you give. You are horrible people and you all deserve to burn in hell. read more

Their ER fucking sucks, the valet employee was rude and I spent a total of 8 hours in the ER for my fiancée only to receive pain medication for chest pain until he's able to see a primary doctor mid February. The quality of care is good. The speed of care is not great for most people although triage is fairly quick. By far the most frustrating part of the emergency department is the security when you come in. There was a long line and incompetent security guards. The metal detectors are the worst junk i've ever seen. They false alarmed at very high rates. If you are having an emergency, i'd advise going somewhere else where you will not risk waiting in line to get the urgent help you need. The hospital needs to remove or upgrade the security equitment so screening can be faster. Someone in charge of triage should expedite patients though when there is an urgent need for help. A security line at an ER is unacceptable and if a line develops, people should be let through as needed with the hospital taking responsibility for inadequate staffing to process screening quickly. It is likely that someone will be seriously injured or killed by the screening delays at this ER. read more

I had the honor of caring for my 1st cousin until he passed earlier in May. Before he was put on hospice we spent many hours not only in Vanderbilt hospital, but also their ER. If you're miserable, in need of relief, and trust Vanderbilt hospital....as the majority of Tennesseans do, wait patiently. They DO care, and if you go somewhere else thinking you'll be seen faster, that may be true but it may also be a huge mistake. The best care I could ask for! I was in an accident and was immediately transported here since it was closest and I need immediate attention. I was taken into their care as soon as I arrived. I was a bit out of it, but several doctors helped with my injuries and showed so much care for me. I am beyond grateful. I had to stay overnight for 2 nights and the room service from nutrition, the nurses, everyone in the CT scan area, and all the doctors that came to visit me provided me with immense care and treatment. I really enjoyed talking with the nurses and learning about them when they were taking my vitals. The fact that these people come in here every single day to care for so many patients is truly extraordinary. The kindness from everyone here has shown me a new view of humanity and how beautiful humans can be. Thank you Vanderbilt! You will be my chosen hospital for as long as I am in Nashville. read more

Husband was 48 hours post major surgery. was released 15 hours after the 6 hour surgery. presented with sever abdominal pain and distention. after 7 hours, it was 1 am and we were getting no answers, no help, no relief and left. said we would call urology in the am. called and noone returned the call to tell us CT results. if you see anyone from ER, you are sent back to waiting room. He couldn't lay down anywhere to try to relieve stomach pressure. i do not know how Vandy ever got a good reputation. every Medicaid patient in Nashville was there. did not matter that we actually pay for the terrible service. Never again. I am done with Vanderbilt. All the negative reviews are acurate! Dirty, over crowded, no comfort, no care. Go anywhere else. read more

You NEED to find a different emergency room. Seriously, even when it's a bleeding, heart attack, coughing up blood, brain aneurysm situation..... FIND CARE ELSEWHERE. I have read horrible stories of this ER after I had a horrible experience. Here's mine: Went to VB on a Friday night at 8pm after BEING HIT BY A CAR while in a crosswalk. I was left in a hallway on the stretcher by the ER door for 2 hours. Freezing from the draft coming in from outside. A started to throw up & that's the only reason I started to get attention. So I threw up more & they eventually moved me to a room. X rays happened, waited an hour, CT scan, waited an hour, no word from anyone. I'm now 5 hours in & my bandages the paramedics wrapped the 6in gash in my leg with are soaked in blood. So I start the unwrapped it, access my own wounds since the medical professionals aren't. When the nurse comes in she realizes I need help & I told her, go get a doctor. She returns with no doctor. We wrap the leg, and she says he'll be right in. Another hour passes. I call for a nurse, I tell her I'm leaving, I'm going to go to a different hospital since you guys are able to help me with my wound. Doctor comes in to see me within 5min. He looks at it, cleans it, says he's worried about the joint, calls for an orthopedic surgeon to come look. One hour later ortho comes in, very nice, orders a CT scan.... Go back to the very CT scan room I was already in.... Jeeze starting to think this could be more efficient on so many levels. Go back to room, obviously wait another hour, doctor comes in, stitches the wound, stitches are crooked, edge are bleeding. Nurse wraps it up, hand me discharge paperwork, no doctors note, no antibiotics, no pain medication. Bandages are sliding off wound, legs is bleeding as nurse walks me to the door. I point out that there's blood dripping down my legs as she's telling me I'm good to go. She attempts to bandage it, it's a mess, she's doing a terrible job. Ive been here for 245 hours by now, I'm over it. I leave Vanderbilt ER bleeding and with no care plan. I'm super embarrassed for them, they can do better. Shout out to Jodie the X-ray tech who's the only person who showed me any compassion the entire experience. read more

They are overcrowded! The nurses and docs are good! I think the residents lack the guidance from the attending for the safety of the patients. This comes from how busy they are all of the time . What a joke. Most of staff are students who quits literally sat around gossiping about other patients' and staff drama. Came in for pancreatitis, was not treated for the pain properly and was thrown into a room with 10 other people overnight unmedicated. I was told by one doctor I don't have it, and 3 following doctors said I did. I got no rest in 72 hours. Told them a dozen times I was in pain, that the medication wasn't working and the head physician discharged me the next day, saying I could do it on my own at home, implying I was pain killer farming when every other patient got transported from the holding pod observation room and medications before me. I couldn't have been nicer and calmly speaking with staff, and the final nurse who didn't give me her name, just got confrontational. I was quietly voice texting my friends behind my curtain in my bed about the insane update, and she started raising her voice embarrassing me and herself in front of staff and patients alike. I've worked in treatment before, and some of the unprofessionalism of the head doctors and some nurses who are simply students and have no bed side manner is disturbing. I also have a history of esophagus ulcers, and they didn't have me talk with a GI specialist either. I came in and left in nearly the same condition. Now her primary care physician reviewed VUMC records and told us THE VUMC Male Nurse forced COVID 19 Nasal Test on us and took this painful test from right collapsed nostril!!! Instead of seeing her in a timely manner they left her sitting in the waiting room for 14 hours with an IV in her arm. This place has become a joke! I went recently because I had a migraine and my temples were swollen. When I was in triage my bp was high enough to make a visual warning. My vision was off, I was seeing small animals and my lips were numb. The triage Dr. came in and seemed pretty clueless. He asked where my temples were swollen and started touching my ears and jaw asking if that was the location. I physically put his fingers on the area and he didn't seem concerned. No EKG was ordered to verify there wasn't a heart condition. Swollen temples can be extremely dangerous because they are veins from the brain to the heart. BP that is 176/100 should be monitored for a stroke. They put me back in the waiting room. At one point I was given an iPad for registration which I didn't fill out because I couldn't see. I gave it 2 hours and left. What a waste of time. read more

I went in with an uncontrollable cough likely caused by my chest being so tight and hard. They took one X-ray, had me pee in a cup and gave me fluids through an iv. Despite having slight blood in my urine, having an enlarged heart (which they said was always there but I didn't know about it) and many other of my vitals being too high they discharged me and told me to go home and take cough syrup which I was already doing but it wasn't working too well. Seriously don't come here if you can help it. They won't help you at all. read more

Horrible experience waited 9 hours and left without any diagnosis. My 76 year old dad pulled out his own IV and all the leads they had him hooked up to. He was admitted for serious issues, sent to Nashville from the Bedford County Emergency Room and we received ZERO information on what was causing his condition. They kept saying we are waiting on a decision from another doctor and we never got any information from him. Also not to mention the nasty conditions the room was. My dad had a urinal accident on the floor it was a lot they sopped it up with towels and took his gown off and used it. No one ever came to sanitize the floor or mop it or clean the side of the bed with pee all over it. The patient across from us as we walked out without signing out stated he'd been there for 10 hours and was leaving due to not being treated or receiving treatment as well. Lastly as we were walking out a guy was in a bed in the hall throwing up in hallway floor as 2 nurses stood by talking like nothing was happening. I said to them, you need to get that cleaned up before someone steps in it, they looked at me and kept talking........ I will never take anyone I care about to that shitty hospital!!!!!!! read more

This emergency room needs to get their shit together. The end. Don't come here unless you want to wait 10 + hours and treated like cattle. I came in for abdominal pain at 6pm on a Wednesday night and did not get seen by a doctor until 3am. I wasn't discharged until 530am. I was thought to have appendicitis, which can turn serious very quickly if not looked at during the first signs and symptoms, so my doctor told me to head to the ER. My doctor is at Vandy and generally speaking, Vandy doctors are the best so why not hit up their ER. Bad move. 12 hours later, I learn that I have nothing serious going on, just need to monitor myself and go see my primary in a few days, coming back to them if the pain get worse or continues (DUH!). Good news right?! Yes but also, why the hell did I have to sit in your waiting room for hours on end, in misery, to find that out! How does the best hospital in Nashville not have a process in place to get what they consider non-emergency patients in and out in a timely manner? The staff wonder why everyone is so upset in the waiting room because they too "want to go home" but this is their problem, 100%. Think about how miserable you are to be there working. Could you image what that attitude looks to someone who is waiting for you to help them? I have been to the St. Thomas and Centennial ERs before and have nothing bad to say about that experience. Nurses, PAs, and physicians here are all great and doing their very best. The ER is in desperate need of expansion and renovation, but this team continues to serve the community the best they can. I wish there was a lower rating than 1. Unless you are bleeding excessively you will wait a long time. I just waited in the ER waiting room for 12 hours after I was transported via ambulance from my Vanderbilt doctor's office. I was so sick and could barely breathe. When I was finally admitted they did help, but the entire experience was awful. I saw a woman lying on the floor on a blanket vomiting in a bag. There were so many really sick people. They were everywhere. I saw some having to stand. Your family can't be with you because there's no room. Once admitted in my room there was enough toilet paper for a couple uses. I asked for toilet paper and in the 10 hours I remained in the room I never got any. The staff treated me without interest or care in my medical problem. I felt like an imposition on their time. Over the last 16 years I have exclusively used Vanderbilt doctors and facilities. After this experience I'm going to start transitioning to a place that can give better care . read more

Good nurses and doctors, but the environment, oh boy!

This is a ZERO RATING with a side of nightmare. I arrived at Vanderbilt University Medical Center ER with a flare up of my Crohn's Disease. It's a relatively rare disease and I should always see a specialist when I go to the ER. The pain of this ailment is out of this world. I was supposed to receive prednisone for it. However, two doctors by the name of Dr. Allie (short for Alexandra) Reinbold and Dr. Overbee decided to pick me to torture that day. They decided that the side effects of steroids (which are long term and not immediate and did not apply to my situation or medical history ) were more important than immediate relief from the monumental painful condition that can last up to 6 weeks or longer, which I was enduring which they gave me nothing for as well. All I can say is as a mother with two young daughters who needed their mom to receive simply good smart medical treatment to restore my quality of life, I pray you avoid this hospital and the diabolical, insidious, and callous doctors there at all costs! Restoring quality of life is not in their vocabulary. Their efforts were malicious and my treatment deplorable. Oh, but they did offer to hospitalize me and feed me intravenously although I had no malnutrition.??? What's wrong with these two doctors? They both should lose any right to practice medicine on innocent people like me or you. I practically ran from this hospital with it's evil eagerness to get me hospitalized for no darn good reason. I have ALWAYS had very good care in the ER!!! The doctors and nurses have saved my live several times. There was only 2 times that i can remember when something went wrong. The first time was June 2013, i told the dr there was something wrong, and they wouldn't listen to me. They went to release me, i guess they decided to keep me just to statisfy me. When i got home on Tuesday, I went to a Dr appt, i was bleeding internally. I was admitted to Rutherford hospital., then nursing home. About a year ago i went to the ER for kidney issues. The dr, released me before he read the blood work was back. He had to come back and find me, so he could admit me. I was in renal failure. read more

My husband came in this morning at 7:30. He has been having seizures for several days and was progressively getting worse. So I brought him in and it's now 11:34 PM and we still don't know anything and they will not admit him. The staff is fabulous and very helpful but this is crazy to be here this length of time and still have no results. I don't understand why they didn't admit my husband. They have an Epilepsy department Here so just doesn't make sense that he would not have been admitted. I understand this is a trauma one facility but to wait for results for over 17 hours is ridiculous. It's really too bad we can't go to another hospital especially when we live over an hour away that has fine Epilepsy/ neurologist department but there isn't any. We are stuck here read more

I'm not sure why people get so upset when they wait a long time at an emergency room. Some of these bad reviews on here are strictly personal instead of a review of the service received. If your hostile because you've been waiting a while, then you may annoy the staff who is also charged with providing your care. I wouldn't bite the hand that feeds you. Secondly, my experience was excellent. Yes I too had a long wait time. I came in at 10pm per my PCP's recommendation and wasn't taken to a room until 2:45am. However they did triage me every two hours to make sure I'm not dying and took the insurance and other registration info during this time so that I wouldn't have to worry about it while getting the care I needed or when it was time to go home. Pretty logical to me. When I was taken back, I had to explain my issue, albeit embarrassing it was, and the staff including nurses and doctors were very professional, helpful, and understanding. I was polite back and I received the care I deserved and needed. When talking about extremely personal details of the condition, they were careful to ensure my privacy the entire time from diagnosis to treatment. I had three nurses making sure I was ok, a Nurse Practitioner and a physician who all came and spoke with me at some point. It felt great knowing I had so many people there caring for me when I needed it. My issue wasn't immediately life threatening but the care I needed is still extremely time sensitive (72 hour window) or the condition could become long term and chronic for life thus warranting an emergency room visit in my doctor's eyes. Worst experience ever at a ER. Was taken there last night for accuse nausea, anxiety attack,and lower back pain. After my Iv was started. O one came back to ever see if I was ok or anything sit for a few hours almost urinated on my self and wasn't able to get up I was hooked up to so much crap .. unhooked it and requested I be moved to another hospital and was asked to give them another chance , I was in A-20 the nurse was horrible with a bad attitude. Got back hooked up and given some meds and never seen anyone again for over 2 hours again almost peeed on my self . After 6 hours I demanded to not be admitted and to be unhooked and left .. never again !! Will go to st Thomas next time read more

Went in with severe head pain. After 5 hour wait was given a "migraine cocktail" that only resulted in horrible side effects and left me feeling worse than when I went in. I was given LARGE doses of Tylenol, Benadryl, and Reglan. If I knew this was gonna be the treatment I would've saved my self the muscle spasms, chills, shortness of breath, ext., and time and taken just the Tylenol at home. This was the 2nd visit within a week, with the first visit resulting in absolutely nothing but being told to go on my way. I believed that Vanderbilt was the gold standard of treatment but after my 2 experiences I now know they are no better than your local walk in clinic. Also the nurses did NOT seem to enjoy their job, but who can blame them I guess. read more

I had a great experience at this ER! I went early in the morning because I woke up with severe chest pains- and they got me in almost immediately. The staff was very kind and did their best to make sure that I was comfortable. I'm from New Jersey so I'm not used to southern hospitality. That being said, this was one of the best experiences I've had with doctors & nurses. Those who took care of me stole my heart with their empathy and sensitivity.
