Had just audited a rock quarry & was hungry for lunch. Van's came up in a Google search so we checked it out. Highlights: the delicious green beans & the dish of beets. I ordered chicken fried steak & gravy. I also got a bread roll. I had coffee. Coffee was very good being it was lunchtime. Tory was our server. She was very sweet. It's a country diner. In The area for some family business and stopped in for lunch. I love tenderloin sandwiches and so had to try this one after reading reviews. Overall it was good but not the best I have had. Great little down home country restaurant, I had the country friend steak along with potato casserole, green beans, pickled beats, battered mushrooms, cold slaw, and a home made roll, everything seemed home made and fresh, lots of love and care went in to the preparation down to the gravy and ice tea. Local place, not busy at the time we arrived. Food was fresh and delicious. Just what I wanted from a local cafe. The fried mushrooms were yum, plump and perfectly cooked. And half the price for more of them than the place I had them in Texas. I ordered the hot ham and Swiss sandwich. The ham was delicious carved ham, again cooked perfectly. So good. Along with my favorite type of fries, crinkle. Precisely browned and nicely fluffy inside. My hubby got the chicken fried steak, and said he enjoyed his meal well (sorry, he's just not super forthcoming with his descriptions, ). I got the pork tenderloin sandwich with colelslaw and there was a small upcharge for fried mushrooms instead of fries. They gave me some options for dipping sauces for the mushrooms and I choose bbq sauce. The coleslaw came with crackers and was slightly sweet, some of the best I've ever had. Recommended by the locals, we opted for Van's for our family dinner the night we stayed at the cabins next door at Marengo cave. After a day of caving, the fresh, home cooked meal was appreciated. Nothing fancy here, just good home cooking. You'll experience foods like fried chicken, slaw, mac & cheese, pork tenderloins, burgers, and homemade pies - all of which our party of 6 tried. Not one complaint from our table. The fried chicken had a beautiful golden crust with great crunch and flavor. All our sides were tasty, yet simple. The pork tenderloins wear large, as is expected here in the mid-west! The best part was the pies. About 5 flavors to choose from, we choose coconut and pumpkin. Both were good and clearly made in house. Service here was ok, not overly friendly and not "bad", just a quiet server. Although not very busy, our meal still took a good 30-40 minutes. Not an issue for us as we weren't in a rush and my guess is it was because most items were prepared fresh. If you're in a hurry, this may not be convenient for you. Once again, nothing fancy - but we had a nice family meal and some good family time in this homey little restaurant. read more

If you're traveling through Marengo, please take the minimal, very minimal effort to drive a few blocks over and eat at The Marengo Tavern. Excellent food, value and guest service. However if you like microwaved canned vegetables, you might prefer Vans. The Tavern is where you'll find the locals. read more
