When pulling into a mostly empty parking lot, I saw a pole with a square sign next to an open spot and mistakenly thought it was a handicap space. I completely take full responsibility for not double-checking or verifying the parking signs beforehand, especially since I was in a bit of a rush to get inside. After a couple of hours inside--something that's rare for me since I don't get out very often--another customer eating at the restaurant came over to let me know that a tow truck had just pulled in and parked behind my vehicle, though thankfully it wasn't fully hooked up yet. I rushed outside just in time. The tow truck driver mentioned that the smoke shop marks that specific space as private parking right next to the handicap spot, but he pointed out that actual handicap spots were wide open right next to it, and suggested I talk to the smoke shop staff since the lot was largely empty. When I went in and politely tried to explain my situation--apologizing for the mistake, noting I'm a disabled veteran on a limited budget, and explaining I'd been inside having dinner--the response from the employee was cold: "Well, you've been here for too long. That's not my issue." I understand the shop was closing up for the night and people are ready to head home, which probably added to the frustration. Even so, look--I get it. Businesses have every right to protect their parking for their own customers, and it can be annoying when people park in reserved spots. I don't put full fault on the business for wanting to manage their lot. But with plenty of empty spaces open, I honestly hoped for just a shred of empathy or a little bit of humanity. Even a basic sales pitch--allowing me to buy something quickly to smooth things over and get out of a stressful predicament--would have turned this into a win-win. I would have gladly spent some money, picked up some new products, and we both would have ended our night happy. Instead, it was a rough experience that could have easily been avoided with a bit of basic decency. I've learned my lesson to always double-check the signs and slow down. But to the employee working: showing a little compassion and practicing a bit of business savvy would have gained you a loyal customer for life. For anyone looking for a local spot that treats people going through a bad predicament with a little understanding and respect, keep this interaction in mind.
