Not sure what the hype is about. You have a choice of salad, pizza, and pasta. You order at various counters, wait, then tray it back to your table. If you want more then you go back and order it, wait again, and take it back again. There isn't any waitstaff. The hubs had a calzone which was spicy and tasty. I had the bologanese which was sticky instead of creamy with hardly any bacon flavor. The kids had pizza with no WOWs. We didn't have high expectations of dessert so we opted to skip it. The decor was nice. They had bar height high chairs so you weren't only stuck at the benches. It was raining when we went but they had lots of outdoor seating. For the price and quality of food, it's a definite pass for us. Who would of thought an Italian Lubys wouldn't have the folks lined up around the corner?! read more

While in Frankfurt, I fell in love with the concept of this restaurant. Once you arrive, you get a card and you have 3 stations, pasta, pizza and salad. When ever you order, you give the card and they add the amount of your purchase to that card. At the end you just go to the cashier and give the card, that is basically your bill. Now, to the meal! The pastas are made to order and you are viewing while their are cooking them. The pastas are made in the restaurant and you can choose what pasta and ingredients you want. Carbonara is my favorite! In Frankfurt they have three Vapiano's. The one I went to is close to the Opera House in the city center. I love the whole idea of this restaurant. You basically get a card and then just walk straight to the chef and then you can choose whatever you wanna eat. (mainly pasta dishes) and the chef is basically cooking right in front of your eyes. Great! They also had Arizona Green Tea ahhhh I could die for! The prices are reasonable, especially in Germany. The design and the atmosphere are welcoming. I really enjoyed the time with my friends and noticed that a lot of parents came with their little ones. The kids had a small area where they could sit and draw and play, which is a clever idea i have to say. I will definitely come back! read more

We ended up in Frankfurt on a whim. Went to the airport and a Lufthansa flight to Frankfurt was the first one we could get on. So, off to Germany we went! However, we knew nothing coming in. Neither of us had any German language knowledge or, frankly, expectations. One of my favorite ways to do a vacation. I observe a vegetarian diet and in countries that don't speak English or French, I pretty much accept the fact that I will suffice with some sort of bruschetta or pizza or fries. It's fine, inexpensive and I typically don't travel for the food. Spending the first evening wandering around Frankfurt, we came across this place. It looked nice enough, several tables were occupied, so we meandered in. We picked up a menu and tried to make sense of the German, when a hostess asked us something. Sorry, we're dumb Americans. She ended up having a basic English knowledge and gave us an English menu and explained how it worked! Godsend after a long day of traveling. Take a card and pick your station (pasta, salad or pizza.) Tell the cook what you'd like to order, they'll make it and charge it to the card. You can also order some drinks at the stations and request bread. They also have a bar with the same swiping system. We both opted for pasta. My friend got the carbonara and I ordered salvia, which had sage, sundried tomatoes and feta. We loved it! So much so, we returned twice more that week. It is rare that we can agree on a restaurant (for my dietary restrictions, he is way more picky than me!) and find it affordable. The second time, I had to get the pesto rosso, a tomato pesto with sundried tomatoes and ricotta, as they were out of sage and my friend got the scampi. Yep, still delicious. On the last night, we went to our originals, tried and true and still enjoyed. We ate outside one day, but it was during the summer in that heat wave that went through Europe in June, so we ate inside the other times. Booths, high seats and benches are available options. I thought the pricing was quite fair for the concept and quality. Higher than McDonald's, for sure, but had real silverware and plates. Looked it up upon returning home and was happy to discover there are a few locations here in the States, however, browsing the menus show that my choice, the pasta salvia, hasn't quite made its way overseas yet. I actually wanted to give 0 stars but that's not possible. This is, by far, the worst Vapiano I have been to so far (and I have visited many because I like the concept and the food). I have lived around the corner of this Vapiano for two years now and have been there over ten times. EVERY time I am disappointed, but I keep thinking that it must be a one time off. Some examples: the cheese on top is missing, pine nuts are burned, pasta is not cooked, no flavour to the pesto, etcetera. Today we decided to take away because we returned home late from work. I ordered a pesto rosso with campanelle and ricotta on top. At home I found half a box of fusilli with a little bit of pesto, 2 cherry tomatoes and no ricotta nor flavour. The pasta was not properly cooked again either. I am so done with this Vapiano! It is NOT a one time off, people. They just can't live up to the Vapiano standards here. Upscale fast food is the best way to describe it. You choose to stand in line for either, (1) pasta, (2) pizza/antipasti, or (3) salads and they make everything fresh in front of you. Also means that picky eaters can tailor the menu to their taste and add or swap ingredients. There is also a separate bar in the back for coffee, beer and wine, and desserts. Great for big groups because everyone can get their own thing and pay separately (what you order gets put on an individual card). Just a warning, this place gets packed at lunch time so I don't recommend it if you're in a rush. Pastas are made in the restaurant and they offer a ton of options. Good, fresh salads and excellent bread. This time of the year they have a great pumpkin soup. read more

We come to this Vapiano on a regular basis with our kids and are normally 100% satisfied with the service, food and environment. However, today was the complete opposite. We sat the kids and my wife and I stood in different lines to order salad and pizza. After waiting longer than normal (as the pizza maker finished pushing out the previous orders), I was finally able to "attempt" place my order. The pizza maker greeted me and I asked for a calzone in German. He said to put the card down, which I did. I then tried to continue ordering the pizzas for my kids. He became rude, so I switched to English, hoping he spoke English to avoid confusion. He then became angry and stepped away from me and refused to serve me. My wife came over and another cook came over. The after a brief argument because of what occurred, my wife was able to complete the order for us. Then the second cook placed the wrong drink on the counter. My wife told him it was the wrong one and then he became angry and slammed the correct bottle on the counter in front of us. At this point I put the drinks on a tray, moved to the side and then went to ask for the manager. The manager came out and we recapped what occurred. She apologized and then handled the salad order. She said what they did was unacceptable and they would be disciplined. It was not busy and we did nothing tomorrow provoke these responses from the staff. It was not a super busy time like lunch. We did not ask for anything but to get our food. We expressed that we are regulars and would not be returning to this Vapiano in the future. I am changing this to two stars because the manager did the right thing and paid for our meals even though we had no intention to ask for this. This lends credibility that she will indeed discipline the two staff members. We will still probably not go back though. read more

Never have I met anyone who wholeheartedly likes this Vapiano branch. Many colleagues have a love-hate relationship with the restaurant, but they end up eating there anyway. So what's not to like about a slightly upmarket, Italian-themed chain restaurant, about a place keen on delivering an "experience"? To be sure, the food does taste good, more on that later. Many people including myself dislike the noisy and bustling atmosphere, especially during busier times such as lunchtime on a weekday. Add the self-service concept of carrying your own tray, and many office workers will be reminded of their company restaurant. Also, the waiting lines can be long, and if you like pizza, be prepared to wait some 10 minutes or so longer than your colleagues having pasta or salads. The payment system is also somewhat confusing, as you are given a card as you enter the restaurant, which you have to tap on the register as you order, and hand back to the cashier as you leave. The "tapping" process does not always work smoothly, however. Furthermore, lose your card, e.g. by leaving it accidentally on the tray that a helpful employee is removing from your table, and you have a lot of hassle finding it back. On a more positive note, however, the food is definitely good. Prices are slightly above average, but certainly appropriate given that your meal is prepared right in front of you and you have customization options (pizza takes a bit longer to prepare). International customers will appreciate English-language menus. Generally speaking, the Vapiano chain as a whole seems to be on the innovative side, offering an elaborate interior decoration, more exotic drink options such as Arizona iced tea, and the ability to pay with PayPass and PayWave. Finally, as in other restaurants throughout Europe, this location seems to actively promote a diverse workforce. Yes, this Vapiano restaurant has its cons, but given the food, it is worth a try. For many of my colleagues and me, it's a love-hate relationship involving more love than hate. read more

I like how this restaurant works and serves its customers... very creative concept! I had a penne pasta with dark chocolate dish and it was so good! Who knew dark chocolate could meld so well with penne, much less in a pasta?! You have to wait in line a bit because the workers are making the pasta right in front of you. Vapiano is by no means a high class place to go, but definitely better than every fast food chain and not really more expensive. Both pasta and pizza are good, although not extraordinary. Salads and desserts are fine as well. The Westend location is much better than downtown, there's more room, it's quieter and even on the weekend at and later at night it's not that crowded that you can't get a seat. Unfortunately, I saw mice in and out the restaurant more than once in the past, but not during my last couple of visits, so hopefully they took care of that by now. Menus are also available in English. All personnel is friendly, the cooks in particular like to chat, make personal recommendations and thus contribute to a friendly, homely atmosphere. read more

While you arrive every guest is given with a card do billing for each order can be tagged to card, if you are a group this is very handy! All the Vapiano's in Frankfurt is located in nice location my personal favorite is the one near to Alt Oper - with a nice ambience! Chefs cook the food in front of you so get to play a part if you have your own preference in how the food is made. Tip: don't go very late in the night as sometime the basic ingredients ran out and probability the food is not digest then! Otherwise good food for the price you pay!! read more
