Last May 19th 2025 i had an appointment with Doctor Frank Varinos to extract tooth 19 with an infected cracked root. His method was very uncomfortable and painful instead of pulling the tooth at ones he ground it down and then he had a hard time trying to pull out the two roots remain with many unsuccessful pulls i was in so much pain AFTER THE PROCEDURE HE NEVER GAVE ME ANY ANTIBIOTICS TO TAKE instead of getting better i develop a lot of swelling and pain i call to see the doctor and instead after i told them the symptoms ask me to go in right away they told me if i feel the same to call them tomorrow sure enough i called them and i see doctor Spyros Varinos and he told me to go to the emergency where they found a large abscess (infection) that required an emergency surgery at Tufts Medical Center in Boston i spent three days hooked on iv's trying to recover I am 65 years old and he is the worst dentist he only cares for the money read more

I went go Varinos for a few years. One of their doctors did a couple of fillings, which left me with severe pain for weeks. I went back to get it fixed and they 'couldn't figure out' what was causing the pain. After this experience, I ended up switching to a new dentist and they immediately told me the fillings were not done correctly and needed to get redone. As soon as I got them fixed, the pain was gone! I would not recommend Varinos to anyone. read more

Went here first for a consult regarding All on 4. First impressions the waiting room was nice and clean and the front desk girls were really nice. I was ushered into the back, the exam rooms are only partitioned off... which probably is ok for quick cleaning or filling. But I would have appreciated more privacy to discuss my options. Had X-rays and a quick exam. Dr. Varinos came in and well he was pleasant enough, the way he faced the door almost ready to move onto the next patient. Don't pause for too long cause he was almost running out of the room. After he answered minimal questions, I was sent over to make financial arrangements and possibly set and appointment. At that point I was t feeling it, but couldn't figure out why. Took the information and went home to ponder and also found some more reviews that had the same experience as me or worse. Definitely not a fit for me as I am going to be spending over $50k to get implants. And the last thing I want to be treated as off the bat as an inconvenience for asking questions and just looked at as a dollar sign. Do your research kids, they are plenty of other dentists out there they will treat you like a human and not just a walking ATM. read more

Nightmare doesn't even begin to describe my experience with dr. Moini. The epitome of ignorant, unprofessional, and rude! I went in for a simple cleaning. She was rude, mean, and crass. She told me I needed fillings even though I had no sensitivity or issues. After she did my fillings, I was in horrible pain for MONTHS. Finally went to another dentist because my teeth would NOT stop being sensitive. Was told fillings were done poorly, and she damaged my teeth. I have permanent damage to my perfect teeth, permanent sensitivity, and would need additional dental work just to figure out what to do about this sensitivity. I have spoken to my brother who practices medical law, and we're going to sue her. We are also currently in the process of reporting her to the state board. I wish I could write what I really think of her - but then I'd be just as classless as she is. Stay away! read more

I have since been back for a cleaning and fillings. The staff continue to be amazing. The hygeinist was gentle, kind, and knowledgable, and Dr. Aziz, who did the fillings, was efficient and careful. I would recommend this office and the staff to anyone. read more

A fair dentist with no personality. Kinda looks strung out at times but let that go. Front desk and office operations a disaster. Rude and ignorant staff who don't know the first thing about customer service. He's obviously overextended himself with the number of offices he's opened up over the years. Quality beats out quantity any day. Poor management is on him if he can't hire the right people. Lost me and my wife as patients after a debacle today with a receptionist who doesn't know the meaning of the word or her responsibilities and duties. I went in for a cleaning got an infection from their dirty utensils and then had a small procedure and had to pay infull before treatment then today several months latter I get a be saying I had a past due for over 60 days never got a bill as it was paid infull at time of procedure then I was told that it was an adjustment months later and when my wife had called the women said it may have been a mistake and that she was new working there which is all not true the is the women that took full payment from me months earlier so if you want to be scammed and get infection due to dirty utensils then go there I will never go back... read more

All I can say is that sedation dentistry is a fabulous thing!! Dr. Varinos gets the job done without any fear or worries! Actually... You don't even know he is getting it done! He has the best staff too! I used to not even be able to bring my daughter to the dentist... And I wasn't even the one who had to sit in the chair! The smells, the sounds... It would send me into a panic. Now I can walk in the door and sit in the chair all without a problem! I still need sedation when I am having work done, but just getting in the door is a HUGE step! Varinos Dental Associates also gives back to the community in a BIG way... I don't know all the details, but one day a year (around Valentines Day, I think) he and his staff see and treat patients free of charge. How many other dentists do that?? None that I know of! Unqualified dentists. You will spend at least 3-4h on a chair for a root canal that is not even completed. It happened to me twice, two different doctors. The second time around got an infection and had to redo the root canal, only to find that one of the roots wasn't even removed. The doctors are not qualified to do these jobs, felt like they were doing it for the first time and training without any supervision. read more

This dental experience is not for everyone. Chop shop environment with a row of partitions separating patients like the RMV. Went in for a consultation on veneers. Website indicates that they will show you digitally what your veneers will look like. Dental assistant indicated that they would need xrays for the consultation and "she didn't know what they cost and if dental insurance would cover?" Really? When I refused the xray - a disgruntled dentist came in and took a quick look at my mouth and said - I don't know - I need xrays before I can talk to you. I was only seeking a consultation - I understand xrays would be needed down the road. I'm sure there are redeeming qualities about this practice but the website should be more explicit about what to expect for a consultation. read more

Had the WORST experience of my life today at varinos dental associates, came in for ONE filling but when I got there they said they were doing two, one on each side. The dr (don't even remember his name but it was not dr varino) did not even numb me for the first filling and I had a little pain that was fine.. but the second side he injected novocaine FOUR times and did not wait long enough before starting the filling, the novocaine had not even started working. (I felt like he was rushing) After trying several times to finish the filling I was in so much pain he had to stop and tell me to come back another time to finish because he said, "the novocaine wasn't working for me and that some days you just don't get numb" Then I asked why does it hurt so much and the dr responds "that's a good question" Are you kidding me ?! So I left with a unfilled cavity and my mouth didn't even become numb until after I left. I left crying and shaking due to the horrible experience! Thanks varinos I'll never be back! read more

I went to Varinos dental to have a few fillings replaced. The staff was pleasant and the facility and the equipment were clean. The only problem I had was that I asked if they accepted MetLife insurance and was told yes. However when it came time to pay, I was told that they are not an "In-Network" provider, so I had to pay a lot more that what I was told. When I called to complaint, the receptionist answer was "whoever told you that made a mistake". Very frustrating! read more

If I could give less than 1 star I would. My husband brought me to Varinos a few years ago and though it started out fine it has ended for me and ended poorly. Dr. Varinos is never in the office as he has overextended himself and opened 2 more offices since I came on board. I am all for growing a business but before you move on to expand fix the "crumbling house of cards" that exists. The staff is rude and disorganized. I have been a reoccurring patient for years and no one ever goes out of their way to extend a kind word. It has turned into a money groveling organization with no finesse. I have since moved on to another dentist who has to replace a very expensive crown that Varinos ( not him but some other person in the office, of which I never get the same person twice) put it. I have been a customer here for 4 years. Have always come in for cleanings which have been great. This time I needed to have an implant. Everything was discussed with me prior to the procedure, price, procedure, types of sedation and time of being in the office. I fully understood what was going to happen and my portion of the cost. Dr Varinos was gentle and very professional. His assistant helped me along the way with encouragement and letting me know where we were at with the procedure. The office was spotless and clean. Buyer Beware!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In the Fall, I visited the office for some long overdue dental work. The office provided a treatment plan and quotes for what the work would cost. I made my decision to move forward with the treatment plan based on assurances that Varinos gave me. I was taken into the financial office for a consultation and during this review, the staff member outlined the costs for each visit and she broke down the insurance portion and patient portion. She even made the comment, "You have great insurance." Then she explained that if I "paid in full" on that day I could receive a 5% discount. I took advantage of that option. We have since discovered that we have a balance of $867 This amount is the the difference between what Varinos Dental charged for the service and what Guardian, our insurance carrier, has set as the acceptable fee for the service. Obviously we are surprised by this because no one in his office had ever given any indication that this could happen. During the Summer, when my wife initially called to find out if you take Guardian, the person who answered the call asked if we were an existing customer. She answered yes and your staff member told us "Yes." At no time was the term "out of network provider" used. When both of us met with the financial person to discuss treatment plans, the term "out of network provider" was NEVER used and the idea that we could owe additional beyond what was outlined was NEVER explained. This feels like a case of bait and switch and it so disheartening from a medical professional with whom we have had a long standing relationship. Even on your website, they give assurances about working with all insurances companies. They state "do not worry because we can always verify your benefits in the office." The reality is we should have been worried and cautious because we were mislead and misinformed. I think the reality is that the staff member in the financial office did not know what she was doing with regard to verifying our benefits and she must not have understood the Varinos Dental policy with regard to being an "out of network provider". We have been informed that this staff member no longer works there. I think that speaks volumes. It's likely she's no longer employed by you because she was not good at her job and didn't know what she was doing. In discussions with other dental professionals, we have learned that Dentists routinely "write-off" the differences between their fee and what the insurance carrier is willing to pay. In fact, when you agree to be a network provider with a carrier, you agree to their fee structure. Yes, we now know you are an "out of network provider" for Guardian, but, again, this was NOT conveyed to us until AFTER we questioned our balance. But the dentists we spoke with, told us that they even when they take insurance as an "out of network provider", they commonly write-off the difference in fees. One would think if you were willing to accept Guardian insurance from an existing customer (something implied with your staff member's question of "Are you a client currently?") you would be willing to accept Guardian's fee to maintain that relationship with the client. Varinos describes his practice as the "premier dental practice on the North Shore" and yet we do not feel like we've received "premier" customer service. read more

SoI had a cleaning scheduled today at 5. When I get in the office the receptionist informs me that I have an outstanding balance. As most patients that go here know, any procedures, other than cleanings, are payable up front. I had a crown done last November, and paid before I had it done. This is what I said that to the receptionist. I then asked why, if I had a balance, was I never informed in the last 9 months that I owed anything, especially since the appointment was made in person. Now the receptionist gets a ring on the phone, from a colleague in back. I can tell it's her colleague by what I overheard receptionist talking about, my situation. The receptionist then proceeds to print up this mumbo jumbo paperwork to help explain why I owe this money; mind you this didn't help the situation at all. She then proceeds to tell me the balance was due from 2019, April I believe. This whole time I thought it was a balance from the crown work I had done in 11/20! I then ask her to speak with Dr. Varinos. She says he is on vacation, of course he is. I then say how about we do this cleaning I have had scheduled for a month, and for which I left work early, and when the doctor comes back I could talk to him. The receptionist replied he wouldn't talk to me about it anyways. The receptionist refused me the cleaning till I paid. She then proceeded to walk away from me and around to the back office, staring at me as I still stood at the counter. Guess she didn't liked that I said I was going to post a negative review! She told me that was a threat. I have every right to post a review, I said to her as she walked away. I refused to pay, not being the point of the money, but over 2 years later because they found some type of mistake?? Give me a break. Everything we get done is PAID upfront. My wife and 3 kids go here. A few of my relatives go here. We are loyal paying customers and this is what they do. I've been coming here for ten years, and I find this petty. You would think I am talking about a lot of money. It was $97! I guess they don't care about losing 5 patients. The receptionist sure didn't. I was willing to discuss this bogus charge with the doctor, but that didn't happen. Not to mention the call the receptionist got from her colleague who never showed her face, but seemed to know of this "charge". She remained in her office I guess. Anyways all in all, after this, definitely wouldn't recommend this practice. read more

This practice was recommended to me because of Dr. Varinos who I liked very much. I met with him during my free consultation and he had confirmed a few things my previous dentist had told me about fillings that I needed done. The cleaning that I had done a week later was not very good at all. I take very good care of my teeth but a day later I felt like I needed another cleaning! I had one small cavity filled by the other dentist that works there (I have no clue what her name is). She kept complaining to me the whole time that she didn't understand why she was filling the cavity because it was so small. She told me to tell her if I felt any pain while she was drilling. When I let her know that the drilling was huring me she snapped at me and said she was almost finished. After that tooth felt ok for a few weeks but then it began to hurt again. After seeing a different dentist (who a close friend of mine works for), I was told that the dentist at Varinos used a compound that is not recommended on back teeth because it breaks away from the tooth very easily. Basically, I paid to have my tooth filled and now I have to pay for it to be redone because the filling is leaking. Believe it or not, that wasn't the worst of it! When I called the office to cancel my next appointment they were curtious on the phone until I told them that I would not be rescheduling. When they asked why I let them know that my friend was a hygentist and I wanted to start to see her for my cleanings. The person on the phone turned nasty very quickly. When I went in to get my x-rays the tall thin blonde who works behind the desk was really rude and seemed put off by having to get me copies of my x-rays. I will never recommend this place to anyone unless you can see Dr. Varinos and ONLY Dr. Varinos! read more

I normally don't write review, but my experience from this place was so horrific that I have to do something about it. I had been going to Varinos Dental for about 2 years and didn't find any problem until recently when my tooth started arching and I was diagnosed with bone loss (permanent damage) of one of my teeth. I was curious and went for a second opinion from another dentist and found of that the troubled tooth was never properly cleaned for years. The problem should have been noticed in any of my past regular visits at Varinos by their Dentists/Hygienists but I didn't hear anything from them at all. This made me so disappointed and questioned if there was any value at all coming to this place. I diligently kept up with all dental cleaning, but still suffered permanent damage to my tooth because of their negligence. The worst was that this problem would have not been surfaced if I didn't actively look for a second opinion from another dentist. read more

Did not have a good experience. Found staff to be unprofessional during my procedure, discussing personal and office matters and giggling and laughing. After procedure I noticed tooth that had been worked on was sharp on corner and staff told me that it was not sharp it was just the filling. Four months later part of the filling worked on fell out, when I went back they told me work would not be covered because warranty was 5 days over coverage. I went to Dr. Varinos's office on the recommendation from my dentist. I wanted to use their sedation services to have some minor dental work done. The office is like herding cattle. I know the office set-up should not matter but, there is no privacy with a lot of staff and patients wondering around, not very comforting for someone scared of the dentist. The deal breaker is they are an out-of network office, which means my insurance company does cover all the usual dentist cost. When I booked the appt. on the phone they said they accept Delta Dental ins. (FALSE) after meeting with the dentist, they brought me to a financial specialist, which I never experienced before at a Dr.'s app especially for just cavities... They told me I would owe over a $1000. with my ins., I walked out after an 1 1/2 and was just aggravated.. Stay away.. They focus quite a bit on marketing and branding and the sedation is a scam, its 3 pills for $275.00, they refuse to write you a prescription for the meds, they make you pay and pick-up the meds at their office. The staff was very courteous but due to the chaotic office and scam on the pricing, I would not recommend going there read more

WARNING TO THE PUBLIC, KEEP AWAY zero stars....... a no good practice. Dr. Varinos can't be trusted. New patients are lured in with free consults, promotions and other advertisements. It was a real disappointment, after I left the consult, Dr. Varinos was unresponsive. And the nasty person that manages his office upon inquiry, alleges to patients that the patient should go elsewhere for untrusting Dr. Varinos. Dr. Varinos prices are less. The practices are located in odd locations, Arlington, Winthrop and Newburyport. The original practice is located in the shady end of town. Dr. Varinos has a terrible chairside manner, terrible customer service and advertises he is the best in the Northshore.....untrue. Dr. Varinos is a Prosthodontist that performs his own implants although Dr. Varinos fails to explain his training. Dr. Varinos consults aren't too great....too quick and and he doesn't explain it well. His staff are mechanical and doesn't know anything going on but are sassy......WATCH OUT FOR JESSICA. read more

Horrific Experience...run now and don't turn back! From the start my husband got the run a around from the office people who found they were also qualified to give medical advice, they screwed his appointment up TWICE(after doing an extraction plan and taking his money) then scheduled him in the Newburyport location AFTER taking his money and told him " Sorry someone else took your spot they paid before you". This was an emergency situation so he kept the appointment in Newburyport which was completely out of our way. The day of the appointment the Peabody location clearly had not transferred his records to Newburyport, the dentist sedated my husband then came out to ask ME for consent to pull one of the planned root canals because it didn't look like it could be saved, I asked him why this was not determined during his orig visit with Xrays etc in Peabody, however he had no answer so here am making a decision for my husbands tooth that should of been discussed LONG before this visit. About 3 hours later the dentist comes out explaining he did save the tooth but it needs to be capped immediately and I explained he was having all 3 root canals capped by a local dentist....his expression looked VERY angry and he stated " If I knew that I would of NEVER of done this work". He sent us on our way with a container of soup and one motrin. My husband was beyond sedated talking jibberish, going in and out of sleep and literally hallucinating about where he was. Upon getting home I called the office and explained my husband was having some adverse reaction to the sedation medication and asked why I was not sent home with aftercare instructions, he had multiple teeth extracted and 2 root canals, I was told he needs to sleep it off. I asked to have the records of what he was given faxed and discovered my husband was given and extra dose of the sedation because he was not "taking to it"..I was never told this and if my husband was told clearly he was under sedation at that point. The medication they used to sedate created hallucinations, vomitting and complete loss of memory for two days, it was followed by 2 days of missed work due to the medication NOT the dental work. My husband calls this one of the worst experiences of his life from start to finish and thousands of dollars later!!! read more

this place was awful. Completely over dramatic and the atmosphere is cold and virtually unwelcoming. This office seems to only care about money. i was told i had a cavity at Varino's and told i was at risk for gingivtis if i dont floss more... anyone who sees my teeth says theyre beautiful, and i have never even had not one cavity in my life. I did not like this place, so i went elsewhere to get a second opinion, where come to find out I DID NOT EVEN HAVE A CAVITY, that varino's claims i had. This place is unprofessional and is only after your money. They pitch treatments to you that you're not even interested in, and push you in directions to only spend your money. I had written a recent post on the positive experience I had at Varinos dental, however I need to also explain. When you go into the office they do bring you into the financial office, you have to pay upfront for services even though they didn't even do the work yet. I had to reschedule a few times, and I gave them plenty of notice, but then when I read the many negative reviews, I got worried, so I cancelled my appointment. When I had to cancel, I was told, "Well because you are cancelling the doctor will not allow you to come back here." Also, office staff that run the business end should not give out medical advice. I found it very concerning for an office person who was not a medically trained person explain the medication and what to take and not take, and they hand you the prescriptions for conscious sedation. This should be done with the doctor, or a nurse, with a doctors order. The administrative assistants should not be doing the job of a doctor or nurse. Always talk over directly with your dentist or physician any plan for medical care. They also say they will give you a percentage off your bill if you pay up front, and then when the number of days expired I had to re-do the paperwork then they told me they don't give a percentage off if you pay upfront. Their policies change frequently and there is a frequent turnover of staff. read more

Great place, as I sat waiting for my name to be called, every customer left with a smile and the staff is very good at what they do. Very thorough exam, which was free btw, I'm a first time visitor, they took xrays, lots of pictures, checked out all my problem areas, which I'm happy to say I didn't have any. Pleasant experience until one of the dental doctors came over to me with a wee bit of an attitude. I told her I wanted a couple of teeth bonded. She persistently corrected me "You mean filled"... call it what you want, every doctor I have ever talked to calls it a bond, not a fill, so after that little hoorah, I again said I want these two teeth right here 'Filled', but they are not cavities so I want them 'Bonded'! She was very persistent and told me that I needed crowns. Dude, my teeth are beautiful, they are not falling out of my head, the tips are chipped and I want them bonded please. Nope, me do crown. She was telling me that fillings or bondings don't last very long. What? I got into a big wheel accident when I was 6 years old and got a bond that has lasted 35 years!! I don't want a crown veneer, that will hold food and make my breath stink, that's gross to me. And so on and so on, anyway, the consultant I spoke with afterward had an awesome personality and resecured my happiness with Varinos Dental, overall a great place, I am definitely going back. The doctor and office manager were apparently having a bad day because I could hear them from the first room and when I finally left it just seemed as though all they wanted was my money. all i can say is this office sucks sucks sucks!!! has the most uncooperative office manager telling she cannot waive my $55 charge because i didn't cancel my appointment within 48 hours. first in place i was unaware of this most stupid rule alive!!! what if i had an emergency 24 hours before my appointment? hello? would i still pay? that's plain bullshit... i did call the office to cancel it within after 24 hours and the receptionist went over the cancellation policy with me and here is the key : she told me for future appointments you will be charged $55 and she never informed me for cancelling that appointment i will be charged. the office manager obviously took the receptionist's word and not my word!!!! plus she told me if i don't pay today the $55 i won't be seated... well then guess what????? you just lost a patient and keep that $55 on your leadger balance forever.......... because i have found a new dentist you mooch peeps!!!!!!! read more

In short, Varino's is a SHAM! My husband had work done and before he was even able to schedule his 1st appt they required he get an account through CareCredit. We questioned this since we have dental insurance. Varino's explained it was a 3rd party creditor to ensure if the dental insurance didn't cover 100% of costs that they would still get paid through payments. We set up the account and have had nothing but issues since!! My husband had his dental work done in November and December of 2010. We started receiving CareCredit bills prior to the work completion, and accruing interest. Varino's didn't submit billing to our dental insurance in a timely manner so although they assured us CareCredit would be paid...WE collected late fee's on top of the interest. Needless to say we have now filed against CareCredit with the BBB and wouldn't recommend ANYONE using Varino's unless you have money to burn and like a good run-around!!!!!!! read more

This office is a nightmare. I've never ever been to any medical or dental office with such ridiculous policies or such a general disregard for the health and safety of their patients. They insisted on x-raying me not once but twice unnecessarily (because I had current x-rays at a different office that they never bothered to ask for or try to get)--when I refused I was told that my exam was over and that dental x-rays were required. The office manager is an idiot, and just kept saying the same thing over again. I never had any interaction with the dentist because it never got that far--I was disgusted as soon as I was taken back and forced to interact with Julie, "a senior associate who knows what she's doing" according to the office manager. Make sure you don't go there if you are pregnant or could be pregnant--they like to x-ray women of childbearing age without asking about the possibility of pregnancy. They are willing to trust the lives of unborn babies based on a medical form you may or may not have filled out correctly, because their policy states that they don't have to ask patients if they are pregnant since it's on the medical history. All things considered, this place is a poor excuse for a dental office. read more
