Last summer we accepted David's proposal to paint our house mid-October this fall. He told us…read moreduring his initial assessment that we would need to cut away all bushes and trees a minimum of two feet from the house. While this was going to require a lot of work on our part, we went ahead, sawing off tree branches, cutting a mature vine to the ground, removing a trellis, etc. As the time drew near, he emailed us from out of the country to say that one of his crew had broken his hand and another was out on family leave for several months. Then last week he emailed us that he had driven by our house and that it appeared to him we were not ready; why he didn't stop to discuss this with us, we have no idea. Today we received an email from him reiterating the two-foot minimum clearance and that having to work around any plantings would take more time than he'd allowed in his proposal--and by the way, his dry rot repairman (one?) was out on leave for the next few months. So, if we wanted to move on to another contractor, he would "completely understand." Now our house outside is in shambles--shrubs tied back, mature plantings cut down, planters out in the yard, etc.--and the rainy season is soon upon us. David: if a job appears to be too involved or would take too much time, just say no in the first place!
