My son was enrolled in a "cookie cutter" - the same plan for all online SAT prep course. He excelled in one area but since kindergarten was weak in math. I knew I needed to get him dedicated help in that area but the "cooke cutter" class offered no individualized assistance. I researched many tutoring and 1/1 help classes and decided on Varsity Tutors. The backgrounds, qualification, dedication and ratings for the tutors was outstanding. Varsity "screens" your student with both academic issues and learning style. Then, your student gets to "meet the tutor either by phone or online before committing to work with that person. If it's not a good fit or your student isn't connecting, they will work diligently until they find the best fit possible. They know what they're doing because they hit the nail on the head for my student on the first try. His tutor went above and beyond to capitalize on his strengths and teach him the concepts where he was weak (as opposed to the other program that boasts it does not teach concept or subject matter but teaches the student HOW to take the test). On his first practice exam he increased 100 points in his problem area. Each week he had homework and a 2 hour online session. One session during the week was to review and correct homework and the 2 hour session was to move forward teaching him the skills and concepts he needs. Not sure about you , but the SAT in many areas presents concepts and subject matter than most high school juniors have never taken courses in or ever even seen. Varsity recognizes that and does their very best to teach the fundamentals of these concepts and subjects so that the student has a solid base, a good working knowledge and the skills to work through problems that he or she has never seen before. Our tutor was SO sharp that he realized in school or with a particular teacher a student may have learned a subject formula or problem one way but that the SAT presents the same problem or formula a different way. So together they practiced how to solve regardless of how the problem or question is presented. I'm an extremely particular parent and do not pay money unless I've done substantial research and then am happy with the product. Varsity welcomes feedback in fact we had an account manager that called after every session to make things were going well. She also called the day before the SAT to not only wish my son well but to remind him that if he just took a breath and fell back on what he had learned and practiced she was confident in his ability. Do they offer a guarantee of an increase of "x" points on the test --- no. PLEASE, be wary of any program that does. There are too many variables - what's on the test, the student's confidence level, did they get enough sleep the night before the exam, etc. No one can guarantee a result, If they do, look no further than the current cheating scandal where people were paying money for a great result on the SAT or ACT. Varsity offers and provides GREAT 1/1 tutoring. That's all anyone can and should expect. I am very confident that the fruits of the hard work between Varsity and my son will pay off soon when we get the results from his recently taken SAT's. Needless to say I would wholeheartedly recommend Varsity to any parent or student looking for superb quality 1/1 tutoring in any subject at any grade level (not just college entrance exams). read more

Home schooling... Brings up many different thoughts and ideas. People do it for many different reasons. I never, ever thought I'd consider it, but with the world and our lives ever changing, never say never. I decided to look into it when my children were teens, and our family was going through some transition. I knew I had neither the skill nor patience to home school my kids. Up until this point, they were stellar scholars, and I couldn't cheat them out of getting the very best. Through hours of painstaking reasearch I stumbled quite accidently, on Varsity Tutors. Varsity tutors is a wonderful, viable option for those children who don't fit into a traditional mold for learning. Coming from a Montessori background, ( toddler through middle school), my three daughters have been self-directed, eager and Independant learners all their lives with an innate sense and desire to serve community and society. We tried public school after 8th grade, and although the teachers and opportunities provided at our public school are amazing, and I value our public schools, it just wasn't the right environment for my children. Varsity has given our family the opportunity to continue on our chosen path to raise self- reliant , critical thinkers. The interdisciplinary curriculum, (which includes all the core requirements designed by the board of ED), is created by family and varsity staff, and is merged with self directed exploring outside the classroom. Community service, volunteering, travel, as well as visiting the vast amount of museums and institutions in our area, is an integral piece of education, as well being necessary to grow as a human being. It was such a relief to discover varsity tutors, and then to have to ability to hire the tutors as teachers. The support, time and individual attention is true to the Montessori method, as we hoped. The curriculum is approved by the superintendent of schools, and the teachers write the reports and keep portfolios for submission. I would recommend Varsity to anyone looking for a tutor of course, but also SAT prep, and as I have done- hired them as partners in educating my kids full time. Additionally- private high schools are extremely expensive. After paying private school tuition for everything up until high school , the breathing room is lovely. We've used Varsity Tutors twice for my son. Nina tutored him in Algebra and was fantastic. My son is a good student, but his school schedule worked out such that he didn't have math for a semester. We didn't want him going six months without math, so we decided to get a tutor who would introduce him to the concepts of Algebra so that when he did take math again, his skills would be sharp. Like I said, Nina was very good: patient, easy to relate to, knowledgeable (she goes to Princeton) and she came prepared with topics to teach since my son wasn't taking Algebra at the time. My son learned a lot from Nina and actually looked forward to their online tutoring sessions. We also used Charlie from Varsity Tutors to work with my son on his writing skills. Unfortunately, the school my son goes to doesn't really teach students how to write well. Even though he's in Honors English, his writing skills aren't very good (IMHO) and his teachers don't really have high standards or expectations as far as writing goes. I, however, do have high expectations and feel that the ability to write well in regards to content and grammar is very important throughout life. Charlie came up with a curriculum for my son and they worked together over the summer. My son's writing skills improved dramatically and I have so pleased to have found such a great tutor for my son. I would not hesitate to recommend Varsity Tutors to anyone and also found the prices to be reasonable compared to other tutoring agencies I've looked into. read more

Varsity Tutors exceeded expectations and I'm told my expectations are too high! My daughter needed to increase her English score by 40 points to get to 1500 and with the help of her tutor over just 6 sessions, she raised her English score by 50 points and passed the benchmark she wanted to achieve. Everybody at Varsity Tutors was knowledgeable, communicative and helpful; from my initial contact with Lou in sales, the account team and especially Chloe's tutor, Danielle. Lou understood exactly what my daughter wanted to achieve and worked to make sure her specific needs were met while keeping our (low) budget in mind. The account team also worked hard to find an on-line tutor Chloe would be comfortable with (she preferred a female) a compatible schedule (East coast time) and a background that met the areas she needed to work on. Danielle was able to point out why Chlo chose an answer that was incorrect and guided her to the correct answer by making sure she understood what the question was really asking. She was also great at communication and responded to questions promptly either by phone or through account messaging. Danielle is reliable, knowledgeable and very pleasant. I highly recommend Varsity Tutors over the cookie cutter prep courses who treat students as if all their needs are the same. We live in a rural area without access to SSAT tutoring services, but recognized our public schooled son needed help after his first crack at the exam. We found Varsity Tutors through a Google search. It appeared to be a perfect fit. As it turned out, it was. The technology interface works. We have DSL only and a standard wireless network. That proved more than sufficient... it was a concern when we first started. No issues. Margueritte, the tutor assigned to our son, was fantastic at engaging him through the screen and turning what could been laborsome sessions into enjoyable and productive time together. We bought the twelve hour block option and then went back for a bit more because we could see the impact. Our son's confidence regarding the SSAT grew noticeably. I am happy to report that all of our son's scores improved significantly - I mean significantly! Varsity Tutors played a critical role in that. It is a highly organized program but allows for flexibility to fit the student's and the family's schedules. I without a doubt would recommend Varsity Tutors. They are beyond accommodating and work so hard to pair you with the perfect tutor for your needs. Normally, it's an online service, however I was after meeting with a physical tutor. They paired me with Viviana Vilacha, she met me at my local Panera bread about 2 times for 4-5 weeks. She was incredibly patient and very helpful! The staff behind the scenes were always very diligent in checking up after each tutoring session to make sure you were happy with the tutor you were paired with/ the service you were getting from your tutor! I appreciated this a lot because it shows that they care about their clients. Definitely go to them, they are also one of the more affordable tutoring services, allowing you to pay in halves instead of in full up front. If you need help dusting off those math skills, ask for Ferhat. He did an excellent job getting me ready for the Praxis II Math Content exam (test code 5161), which I finally passed. You see it took me three times to pass this test and I wish I had used Varsity Tutors and Ferhat to get me ready for the test the first time. It was well worth the money. My sons tutor Raynette Peck was amazing helping my son prepare for the ISEE exam. She was incredibly knowledgeable and had an ease to her that made this very challenging experience doable. By doing the tutoring via SKYPE, I think it was more effective. There were no distractions, we could have sessions later in the evening and overall it was just very comfortable for my son. The ISEE has been by far the most challenging thing he has had to face from an academic experience and without the help from Varsity Tutors and Raynette it would have been a disaster. Christopher was a perfect match for my nephew. They studied areas of the ASVAB for 20 sessions. His quick assessment of my nephew's learning style was dead on and Christopher was able to tailor his teaching to my nephew's skill level.
