I do not recommend this tutoring company. They just charge you even if a tutor was not assigned to the kid . We saw a surprise bill being charged month after month . When called ...they said its a subscription service we signed up for where as the first month when we wanted to try the tutoring from them they said they were going to charge for just that month . They never followed up or suggested a new tutor but kept charging month after month. Now when we call them they deny to refund . One word .. this business is not Right . read more

The tutoring was fine, but THEIR BUSINESS PRACTICES ARE NOT! Varsity Tutors has been INCREDIBLY difficult to work with regarding cancelling the service once my son finished with the tutoring. When you call customer service, they claim they cannot cancel the service and charges. Varsity Tutor customer service insists that they must set an appointment between another Varsity Tutor department and you to cancel the payments going forward even though no further tutoring is being done. Subsequently, they do not honor the appointment times. This has now happened repeatedly. I recommend that you hire a tutor directly and skip the corporate drama. read more

Our Spanish tutor was very good. Communication with VT's was not. It's like they're constantly handing the baton to the next shift. One hand doesn't know what the other is doing, and there doesn't seem to be anyone overseeing and making sure it all works. If something doesn't go exactly as scripted, this adds a lot of time burden on the customer/parent answering calls and explaining the issue to an ever-changing cast of characters. Their policies protect their interests well, but aren't always good for the customer. For example, 1) they don't answer emails at all (no paper trail), 2) they set the default session time at 90- minutes and push back if 1-hr sessions are preferable to the student, and 3) they go overtime with your child (a minor) and charge you without asking you. This leads to depletion of your hours, so check what they changed online after each session. read more

This has been the best tutoring service we have tried so far. I have two children who are homeschooled. One in high school one in middle school. Our tutor, Ileen is fantastic with both. She is able to help with all subjects in a way that keeps them both engaged. My daughter is visually impaired and Ileen has taken that into consideration in her teaching. She uses drawn illustrations that my daughter can actually see. She is so considerate. My son says she is funny, which helps him stay focused. I love the way this company works. They have the option of online tutoring if a special project comes up between tutoring sessions and the kids would need a quick question answered. Fantastic company. read more

They charge you thousands of dollars and pay the tutors $15 an hour to be " experts". If the tutor was "bad" its likely that they werent being compensated enough to actually care. you are better off using a website like care.com and finding a local teacher who is looking for work. You will find better quality and it will be much cheaper. Their customer service is awful and they take advantage of their tutors expertis . read more

We especially love the "on demand" tutors for AP Calc. My son knew that if he was stumped when studying for a test, he could get the answer and understand it very quickly. He could talk to someone within 5-10 minutes. This helped him relax, knowing he had help anytime...even at 12 am the night before a test! read more

I went through Varsity Tutors to find a math tutor for my 7th grade daughter taking 8th grade math (prealgebra). My daughter had taken common core math in traditional public school in the 6th grade, but we moved her to a private school and a more difficult curriculum for the 7th grade. The tutor was professional and thorough, but my daughter's grade did not improve. I don't feel that this was in any way because of her tutoring sessions not being effective. I think the curriculum was tougher than any of us expected, and it became apparent that my daughter had missed some key concepts so she found it difficult to build upon what she had already gone over, as the concepts weren't solidified and as the material got harder and harder, she struggled more and more. She might have gotten a better grade if we had taken advantage of the online tutoring sessions, but we stuck with in-person tutoring once a week. Also, we began tutoring with this particular tutor mid-way through the year. She'll be taking this math course over again, but we already feel much better about her taking at the appropriate level and really understanding the concepts from the beginning, versus having to push her through when it was already proving difficult for her. She'll be much better prepared next year and we will continue to use this tutor. read more

The weakest part of my son's application to college was his ACT score. Through his six 2 hour sessions with varsity tutors, giving him guidance on how to take the ACT and practice problems, he raised his ACT score by 5 points. He is currently a freshman at MIT. read more

Both of my daughters have used Varsity tutors in different capacities. My oldest used an online tutor to pull up her ACT score. While my younger daughter used a varsity tutor at our home for math and science. My oldest daughter brought up her overall score 4 points. My youngest went from a D in science to a B+ and a C in math to a B. My youngest daughter has a lot of learning disabilities and one day I stepped in at the end of the session and saw that the tutor had created a visual aid for my daughter to understand domain and range. She was elated and said it was the first time she actually understood the concept. Both tutors figured out my daughters' learning style. Having been an elementary school teacher I knew I had the capacity to teach but high school courses were another ballgame. We will continue to use Varsity and plan on ACT prep this summer for my younger daughter. read more

I rarely if ever write reviews, but in this case I hope I can help a parent with a college student that is not performing up to their potential. My UNC (suppose to be) rising junior was having a difficult time with her classes. She is a good kid and a smart kid, so instead of overreacting I looked for the problem and then a solution. My analysis revealed a lack of organization and time management difficulties. Like many students she had not really been challenged in high school and this resulted in poor study skills. Long story short, I found Varsity Tutors online and once I got the idea in their head of what I was looking for, they gave me several choices of tutors. The first two I reviewed were very competent, but were not a good match for my girls personality. I then read the third bio and exchanged emails with Rowen. I pat myself on the back for the choice, because she ended up being a godsend. She was a lot like my daughter and they meshed almost immediately. T's grades turned instantly. At that point I thought she had no chance of graduating on time and I was wrong. Just this last May, T is a proud Tarheel Alum. She also went from struggling with under a 2.4 GPA to a GPA for the last four semesters of 3.8 and bringing her cumulative over 3.1. Rowen of Varsity Tutors literally changed my daughters life. The reason I did not give them 5 stars is they called a little too often making sure I was signed up for plenty of hours. Not a hard sale, but just too often. I had a great experience with the Latin tutor for my son. She was extremely knowledgeable and patient. However, I had a horrible experience with my son's math tutor. When I reached out to Varsity Tutor about the rude behavior of the tutor their customer service was absolutely horrible. It took days for the issue to be given to my account rep who only addressed getting us a new tutor. When I spoke to my account rep about the horrible service he nonchalantly agreed and then promised follow-up that never happened. They never directly addressed the horrible behavior of the math tutor or notified me on the course of action taken. I get the sense that they are just about quotas -- there is absolutely no thought about client retention or customer service. Up until the incident, and lack of care to resolve the issue, I planned to use them throughout my son's high school years. I will not be using their services in the future. read more

My youngest son needed some extra assistance with College Algebra course and we were referred to Varsity Tutors by a friend. While the tutor was very nice and flexible as he allowed my son to text or call with questions, my son's grade did not improve and he ended up receiving a D in the course. The service is expensive and to not receive the results he needed was very disappointing. read more
