I rented a 10 x10 unit at $105 per month with a $35 security deposit. I was paid through the 22nd…read moreof November. I emptied the unit early November, considered storing additional items but did not. I went to cancel and obtain my deposit on or about November 16, 2015. I was told it looked like the company already cancelled it when they found my unit empty without a lock. Mind you, that is how it was when I first rented the space. No one called me about this. They do not pro-rate if you cancel early but apparently can rent to someone else if your unit does not have a lock. The young women told me I should be receiving my deposit money in the mail in 2 to 3 weeks. The check was not forthcoming. The gal with whom I had interactions with had worked there for some time went out on maternity leave in the meantime. The person in her place pleaded ignorance of anything. She said she would get back to me but did not. I called back and she had no information for me. Customer service is non-existent. The supervisor failed to return my calls. When I finally reached her, she said that the contract says you must inform them if you empty your unit and take the lock off (the lock that I purchased from them and was mine). (the print must be rather small) and if you neglect to, you forego your deposit. Apparently the person I dealt with who had been employed there for some time was not aware of this policy because she never stated this and actually told me I could expect the check in the mail! As far as I knew, I was paid through November 22. I should have been informed that even if I was paid through a certain date, they could 1). Refuse to give me my deposit back and 2)rent to someone else even though they don't reimburse on a per dime basis.for early cancellation

There's something new, and it's NOT good. As of just recently, you get to pay for the company's risk coverage policy, and they keep most of your payment. Yup, read on. Up until recently I would have given them 5 stars. However, you MUST now sign up to pay a very hefty monthly fee for a kind of insurance that protects them against liability/loss, and they are not specifically revealing how or even if this means the customer can make a claim for their own losses. So I tried to do a little research. First of all, they give you an opt-out option, but it comes with a BIG caveat. You have to PROVE to their insurance company (not to Bluebird...this is a third party) at "private policy.com". This website is run by a company called "SafeLease". Do the research on SafeLease. They are the company that is doing the "insurance" specifically for storage unit companies. They may or may not offer coverage for the individual customers, based on who you believe online. Now, here's the kicker: SafeLease advertises outright to potential storage companies this slogan: "Turn your risk into revenue"! And, sure enough, I found several discussions on storage industry forums. They love that they can get up to 70 percent of the payment kickback from this deal. Yup. 70 percent. Worse still, Bluebird turns over the opt-out processing completely to SafeLease. SafeLease will not release you from paying up unless you send them documentation containing your coverage information (forms that contain a LOT of personal info). Nowhere have I seen what protections SafeLease's privacy are, or how they will use your information. This smells really, really rotten. We are actively looking for an alternative to Bluebird Storage unless they ditch this plan to raise rates without admitting that is what's happening.
