The team is amazing, from the reception employees, the techs and the veterinarians... All truly amazing and caring for our furry baby! We have an Australian Shepherd and some medication is known to be an issue for the breed, they were on it before we even asked. They answered all our (many) questions, are always patient with us, and are not gauging on medication, shoots, food, etc. We feed our dog raw food and the vet explained the pros and cons of raw food, provided us with tips on ensuring our dog has a healthy and balanced diet, etc. We have sinced moved from downtown and the extra drive is worth it! Their hours and availability are incredible... Don't get me wrong, they are busy and this whole COVID distanciation is not helping, but we have had a few emergencies where they were able to see us withing fantastic timelines (within minutes in some cases), squeezing us between two patients or first thing in the morning if a vet was available. They have always been extremely gentle with our dog... A true testament to the love and care the whole team as Centretown Vet. Hospital is how excited our Aussie is when we go! The attendant said that they have a pill cutter but do not use it for patients. My question to her was if you do not use the pill cutter for medication the Vet prescribes to his own patients then what do you use it for which she refused to answer. I even offered to pay for a pill cutting service to be done by them but the attendant just kept saying NO. She gave me a lame excuse that once they are cut the pills lose their freshness which is a total lie. Pills are kept sealed in a container and are used within 1 month so there is no way that they could lose their potency. To me it was her not wanting to do the extra work for a patient that was prescribed small pills that needed to be cut up into 4 pieces each. These are small water pills which are impossible to cut up that small without a professional pill cutter. Yes i tried pill cutters from the pharmacy which were no better than cutting them with a knife or razor blade. The results were always uneven portions. Talk about NOT GOING THE EXTRA MILE FOR A PATIENT. I also asked to speak to the Vet about this which of course she refused because she knows she would get into trouble. Pathetic.

We are not clients of this clinic but they were gracious enough to give us an urgent appointment last April for our cat Felix "fefe" who was clearly at the end of his life. He was very old and had stopped eating over the course of several days so we knew it was time. Our regular vet was on holiday but the BHVC was able to take us in right away when we explained the situation. It was a heartbreaking ordeal and was made even more stressful by the fact that we were unfamiliar with the BHVC, but the staff at the reception desk and our vet tech Julisa greeted us with kindness and compassion. Julisa in particular was absolutely amazing! I was total reck, but she was kind, understanding and supported us every step of the way. I was even more touched, when a month after fefe's passing we received a beautiful condolence card signed by all of the staff. My favourite part of the experience was that they went through and thoroughly explained what was wrong with our cat, rather than just handing over a bunch of pills (which some animal hospitals do). We came here on Sunday for our dog that just had an eye accident. Not many vets are open on the…read moreweekend. This was the closest location so we made our way there. They did tests but with no vet at the clinic. He would have to wait for surgery or 10k to bring a vet in. The only surgery on that day that was offered was to removed the eye. We paid $530 for the test and antibiotics because my dad wanted to save the eye so we brought him back home. Look at if the swelling was going down, with the medication. The swelling went down but his eye is still not getting back into place. (They had to pull it to do the test) The dog now has lost vision in the eye and we would run the risk of infection. So we called to book an appointment on Monday. We got an appointment for the following Wednesday. Appointment on march 13. I showed up around 9:45AM my dad was already there with the dog. They showed up at 9 as they were priority and needed to come in (receptionist conversation with dad). They had to leave so I stayed with the dog. It is currently 12:07 I don't know when they will bring him in for surgery. No update its a very long time to wait. I just seen a vet tech around 12:20 she took his weight and told me they would run more test but probably no surgery today... unless we would try to save his eyes... so now they are offering to save his eyes...3 days after... however what is the point of appointment if we lose a whole day and the dog is not being cared for... Nothing more happend... I left around 4:30 I had to go eat a little something. My dad had just got back so we switched. When I came back at 6:35 they were in the office with the vet. We got told to leave him for the night as he would get is operation in the morning tomorrow. And we could pick him up on the 14 in the evening. I have to add that All day (13th) we did not take the chance to feed him because we thought he would be having his surgery and we didn't want him to throw up... from there it seems like he was in good hands the vet called us that evening to Told us about his blood test... I thought that was very thoughtful. Same thing on the 14 nothing...no news. We didn't want to call if he was still recovering. But my dad called at 5:30PM asking if they had any news. He was next in line what ever that meant. (I probably sound like a Karen right now) But I would have appreciated an update. We got news at 6:30PM his operation had been done and... they would need to keep him another night. I will update tomorrow. 7K for the eye removal... they charge emergency price but don't have enough vets to offer reasonable services/treatments. I would not recommend this vet... Also *** While I was waiting a lady was there with her dog. She didn't see anyone for her dog they simply told her after 45 minute waiting. Then within some time a " nurse" triaged him. She told me he seems to have a cough and couldnt really see or hear anything. My goodness! Im not a nurse but given his Symptoms AND he had laboured breathing, so it shouldnt have been treated as some mild incident! We waited in that lil room for another 2 hours when finally I went to the front desk to be told that he wont be seen until later that day or night! Really?!!!! No one informed me and my precious dog had laboured breathing?!!!! I wasnt happy at all , so unprofessional! Then they said( only after me asking how long it will be to see a doctor!!!) They told me to go home and they will call me. In the meantime I drove him to the Eagleson Vet hospital. I called ahead to explain about my fog's laboured breathing. We got there, and they got us a room, and a doctor saw to him right away. He listen to his lungs like the other " triage nurse" at alta vista, and he indeed saw what I saw and heard his lungs! BIG mistake Alta Vista! Then Eagleson Vet Hospital did an xray asap and my poor baby was dying of lung cancer!!! I saw the xrays myself. Very disgusted by Alta Vista Vet Hospital! The Eagleson Vet Hospital gave him meds to help his breathing until I could attange my family to come in to put our sweet doggie out of his suffering! His lungs were full of cancer! The icing on the cske, Alta Vista Vet Hospital called me back more than 24 hours later!!!! Shame on you Alta Vista " Hospital"!!!! DISGUSTED! Shame on you!!!!

I've taken our dog to Pretoria Pet Hospital for almost 2 years now and it has been a very good experience. I've visited them on numerous occasions; ranging from normals visits for vaccinations to an emergency visit when our puppy ate something that made him keep vomiting. Every time we've been treated with respect by the competent and courteous staff. Pretoria is in a great location. It is close to the canal path and Bank street so it is an easy walk for anyone who lives downtown. Being able to walk to the vet is important if you don't own a car as many taxi drivers will refuse service if your pet doesn't fit in a carrier and waiting for a pet taxi during an emergency is stressful. If you do have a car, they only have street parking but the street has very few business so I don't think you'll run into problems finding a spot. We did some price comparing when looking to get our dog neutered. We found Pretoria to be competitive with others vet in Ottawa but but on the higher end of estimates. For vaccinations Pretoria cost the same amount as the other places we were considering and was more convenient. The staff is incredibly friendly and accommodating. During our visits we've seen four of the five veterinarians and they've all been wonderful. In fact, I like them so much I don't even bother requesting a specific vet when booking an appointment. The vet techs and assistants have all been very friendly and good at their jobs. They do a great job of getting our dog, who is weary of strangers, to let him take his temperature and check him out. The receptionists have all been very nice as well. They always call the day before our appointment to confirm appointments and actually call back if you leave a message. In addition, if you just have a question they'll check with a vet and call you back. This is great when you have a "my pet just _____ do I need to bring him in"" question. One time our dog managed to break off part of a knuckle bone and swallowed it. A short while later he started vomiting 5-6 times in a short period so I called Pretoria to see what they recommended. The reception was very helpful and were able to get me in to see a doctor within an hour to have our dog checked out. The vet did an examination and gave a prescription for two things to help him pass the bone chunks and keep down water. She said if that didn't work by tomorrow we should being him in for xrays and possibly surgery (all done in office). The total cost for the vet trip including medicine was around $180 and our dog recovered wonderfully after he took the medicine. Downtown is lucky to have such a great pet hospital. Yes, it is a little more expensive than some other options out in the suburbs but it is convenient and has a wonderful staff.

They genuinely care about my dog and about the care that they are able to give him. Follow up calls and check ins occur very regularly; I have never had a vet's office call me to check how my dog is doing! Monday, I made the very difficult decision to have my senior cat euthanized. One of the hardest decisions of my life was made so much gentler with the help of the staff. My oldest son and I were able to stay with our cat for the entire time. The staff was compassionate and explained every step of the way. Our family was able to say good-bye feeling supported, comforted and understood.

Since the bill was over $1500, it was past the daily limit of my debit card, so I offered to pay the balance by cheque, which was initially refused. I was told to go to the Bank to get cash. The vet (same one as the first visit) told me they can't afford to chase after bad cheques, thus implying in front of staff and other clients (which I found insulting) that my cheque would bounce! I insisted, and they eventually took my cheque, since no where on their estimate or invoice or anywhere in their office did they state this.(however my invoice says that I still owe them the amount of the cheque). I will not be going back, and I would suggest that they state this policy on their estimates. In addition one of the pain killers which they prescribed was an opiod, which I will be tapering off and discontinuing, since the other is just as effective, and an NSAID. The care seems to be good, and the intake staff approachable and friendly, but their billing practices are not clear, and should not be discussed in front of other clients.

The staff was very compassionate with our lost.. took time to explain what happened to our cat and another staff took time to talk to us after death care,,, show us all the options. We chose cremation and have his ashes returned in a special urn with MO on it. Both hubby and I recommend them highly.
