The animal care itself is good and the vet took time to explain things to me and answer questions about any concerns even unrelated to my specific reason for being there with my pet. These people are corporate. This is obvious when they need to tell you via signs, wall art, etc. that "they care". If that proves true you needn't spell it out. If your animals needs care that is expensive - like almost anything there is - they refuse to offer their own payment plan. You either have Care Credit or you pay their horrendous prices in full. They are compartmentalized: thanks to the surgeon's lack of knowledge, my dog died unnecessarily, long tragic story short. I am not satisfied with my experience at this hospital for several reasons. First of all, Dr. Purdy's bedside manner and demeanor are deplorable. When I first met with her to discuss the upcoming CT procedure on my cat, she was bizarrely upbeat, peppy, and cheerful when telling me that it was likely my cat had terminal cancer. I was completely taken aback and startled by the disconnect between what she was saying and how she was delivering that message. There was no compassion, empathy, or understanding that the message she was delivering was devastating - her demeanor was more in line with a positive, optimistic prognosis. In addition, she kept rearranging her hair and grooming her nails while talking to me about the looming death of my beloved pet and I just couldn't wait for her to leave the room. Later, when she called me to let me know the CT procedure was complete and my cat had woken up from sedation, she had the same peppy, cheerful attitude when telling me that the preliminary results were consistent with nasal lymphoma. She never once expressed condolences or acknowledged how upsetting this news would be. She never said anything like "I'm so sorry to deliver this news, this must be upsetting for you." She was annoyingly and inappropriately cheerful and peppy and bubbly. It was completely shocking and I could not believe what a terrible bedside manner she had. A few days later, she called me with the results of the CT and said that the images are consistent with nasal lymphoma, a terminal diagnosis as chemo/radiation are not financially feasible nor do I believe they will offer my cat any meaningful quality of life. Once again, her attitude, demeanor, and delivery were terrible and completely at odds with the somber and serious news she was delivering. Even when I choked up and started crying a little bit, she never expressed any compassion or empathy - she just continued on with her chipper and upbeat attitude. At one point, I mentioned how difficult it was to administer the pills that had been prescribed for my cat because he kept spitting them out and was starting to avoid me when I came towards him with the meds. In a bright and cheerful voice, she said "Yep I wouldn't be surprised if this interfered with your relationship with him and possibly shortened his lifespan!" I could not believe she said that - it made a difficult situation so march harder to handle. I have never experienced a healthcare professional with such a terrible ignorance and unawareness of their inappropriate demeanor. She needs very specific and targeted education and training on how to deliver bad news about her patients to their owners. Losing a pet is devastating and if she can't handle owners' emotions appropriately and carefully, she needs to find another job. I want to point out that I am a healthcare provider myself and I have had to deliver upsetting and sad news to patients many times over the course of my 20+ year career. I am ALWAYS aware of the impact of my demeanor and attitude on how my patients process what I'm saying. It's so important! Especially when bad news is being delivered, compassion for people's emotions should be TOP OF MIND!!! Finally, when I dropped my pet off in the morning, I was 100% clear that I wanted to be told about any and all "extras" that appeared on the invoice before anything additional was done. Dr. Purdy assured me that nothing additional or extra would be done without my permission. Later in the day, she called me during the CT scan procedure to say that a pharyngeal mass had also been identified (in addition to the nasal one) and asked if I gave my permission for this to be biopsied as well. She told me this would be an additional $400. I gave my consent and they moved forward. Later, when it came time to pay my bill there was a fee of $200 for the histopathology associated with this biopsy, which Dr. Purdy never told me about. She only said it would be $400 more. When I expressed my disappointment, nobody was willing to acknowledge that a mistake had been made. I spoke to the clinic manager and she just kept pointing to the "extras" listed on the original invoice as proof that it was ok to charge me this additional money, even when I told her that I had asked to be informed of all "extra" fees before anything was done. She then told me that they could just not send the tissue samples for histopathology, even though I would still have to pay $400 for the procedure. So in essence, I would have to pay $400 for nothing. After the upsetting interactions with Dr. Purdy described above, this added insult to injury and I just wanted to get out of there and go home and cry. I will not be coming back to this hospital if at all possible and I do not recommend it to anyone else. read more

They are only concerned about charging lots of money. I took my cat in and paid the emergency fee of 180.00. Before they even looked at her they asked me to sign agreeing to and extra $600 to $800. When I asked for an explanation, they made me wait another 20 minutes and came up with possible fees for diagnosing her for the next 2 days, over $4000. That was just to diagnose what was wrong with my elderly cat. When I asked to take my cat home without further treatment they made me wait another long time. I ended taking her to Cornell which offered far superior treatment. Their focus was on my cat's and my wellbeing. Extremely expensive; while the vets are highly skilled and professional, some desk staff are great, some are a bit dismissive. I came here for an emergency visit nine days ago for my cat. After calling repeatedly about bloodwork results that I was told should have taken a few days, six days in I found myself arguing with a phone person who said I had gotten my results when "no I had not in fact gotten all the results," it took a week to find out that my bloodwork was spilled in transit to the lab. I had to bring my extremely sweet but very freaked out cat back across the county for a redo. In hindsite, perhaps I should have asked for a refund and gone to his regular vet where it would have been much less expensive and less stressful as he was no longer in crisis? Update: got a very apologetic and understanding follow up call and refund for the bloodwork. She said they will look into communication breakdown, how it occurred and make sure it doesn't happen again. This is an extremely busy practice. I added back in two stars because in general they have expertise/testing that general practice vets do not have and in an emergency situation I would return as I do trust the expertise at Colonial in an emergency. read more

Lack of consistency is my biggest concern. I signed both my dogs up for the "Care Club," retroactively covering a visit from the prior week so that both dogs' visits could be applied, and I would receive the appropriate refund. Both dogs received the same blood work and the same vaccination. However, only one dog was retroactively credited, while the other was not. When I spoke to Guthrie, he asked if I had specifically mentioned this for the second dog. I hadn't, because the chart clearly showed both dogs had identical treatments--why wasn't this noticed? Guthrie then told me that the blood work for the second dog would not be applied to the Care Club. When I pointed out that both dogs received the same services, he responded that they had "gone above and beyond" for the first dog, which was confusing since I was present during the enrollment, and no special steps were taken. At that point, correcting what seems like a straightforward oversight became unnecessarily difficult, and I was left feeling like I was somehow at fault. The positive energy I experienced when signing up changed once this issue arose, and I was told they would "look into it." If this is the level of service I can expect--especially at such a high price point--I'm questioning whether the value matches the cost. read more

I have still not received any explanation for why Dr. Armas decided against her own initial treatment plan for Casper (a local anesthetic, rather than the general anesthetic she actually administered, which has left him shaking and trembling for months afterward). Instead, I received a call from the medical director informing me that I am no longer welcome to take my cats to Colonial for emergency care. I have been taking my cats to Colonial for over 17 years, and spent upwards of $20,000 there. I have not even disputed Dr. Armas' bill for her "treatment" of Casper. I have been banned from their emergency department purely because I objected to their harming my cat. Please consider my experience (related in full in my original review, which you can see below Colonial's response) before placing your pet's life in the hands of one of Colonial's veterinarians, especially for emergency care. What is done to your pet while in their "care" will not necessarily be what you consented to have done, and they feel no obligation to ask for your consent to a change of treatment plan. The front desk guy "Stephen L." HORRIBLE. Rude last time I was here...chalked it up to maybe him having a bad day... then today, again when I returned he was the same. If not for him I'd have given a 5 star. Veterinarians are great. I don't know why an office would want someone like that to be the first impression people get of them. This is a great clinic for anything orthopedic, especially which is why I drive 2 hours to visit their office. Very impressed with the veterinarians and staff. Understaffed. the vet was fine. now bear in mind, the vet told us shes the only vet working.. the problem was the gay guy at the front desk. i made an emergency service call. got there at 4:45. by the time we got to talk to the vet, it was 7:45. so we get to the front desk and a nice young lady was taking care of our bill. i asked why i have to pay $200 for an emergency call when we were there for 3 hours. the gay guy chimes in and says, this is like a regular hospital, you have to wait your turn for an emergency. the problem is that they took every other regurly scheduled dog ahead of us. to me that is not service. so why do i have to pay for an emergency service bill. i asked the girl what a regular visit costs and she told me and then i asked why do i have to pay for an emergency bill when all the other animals were taken care ahead of us. so the gay guy again chimes in and says stop harassing us. i said i am not harassing anyone, i am asking a question. so i pay the bill. the desk girl goes to get my dogs prescriptions and comes back and says your going to have to wait because she is taking care of another dog. i asked her, is that going to take another 3 hours. the gay guy stands up flailing and says i have to wait outside because i am harassing them. i said im not going anywhere. im not harassing anyone, i am just asking questions. so then he tells me he is going to call the cops if i dont leave. luckily my fiance walked in from outside and i looked at her and said im taking these, 5 candies from the counter and said dumb and dumber(the movie) and gave my dog 3 dog treats from the counter because my shit was about ready to hit his fan. i have someone very close to me who is gay and he gets the hangrys. i think the gay guy receptionist must of had the hangrys last night. all in all, stay away. 3 people at the front desk, only 1 vet. was does that tell you. stay away, away away. read more

We were so impressed with the compassionate care they provided one of our cats at the end of her life that when we adopted our latest pair we knew we wanted to use Colonial as our primary vets. We are so happy with that decision- especially after a recent emergency. Our Nefertiti was not acting right and even though it was 8 on a Friday night the staff never made me feel like I was overreacting. In fact they took our concerns seriously enough that they referred us to Cornell. Fortunately it ended up being treatable with a few days of inpatient care. I am sure it could have been much worse if we had put off seeking treatment. Not only did they listen, but Nef's usual vet called to check on us when she heard there had been an emergency. Refused to help my dog and had to euthanize her...said no room for my poor girl

I have one bad comment and one good comment. First, when I called about my dog who was bleeding from her mouth, the woman on the phone was very rude and abrasive with me. I was crying and nervous which I know she could tell so why be rude to me? It was just the way she spoke and answered my questions and was just very HARSH. When someone is calling in tears about their BELOVED PET, you should know better than to treat them that way. Second, Dr. Eule was absolutely amazing. My poor 14 year old dog had a bleeding tumor in her mouth so we chose to put her down. That doctor was so compassionate and sympathetic and GENTLE with my girl. The situation was terrible and heartbreaking but Neely was in good hands and that's all I could've wanted. I cannot say enough about the care my dog received from him. His care for my dog comforted my heart during those moments and afterwards. Thank you so much. read more

We unexpectedly became furparents to a young orange shorthaired tabby. Soon after her choosing us to be her family she started experiencing heavy bleeding on a friday afternoon. Colonial was the only place able to see her. We still don't have a diagnosis other than a misshapened thickened walled uterus with free fluid both in the uterus and her abdomen. She needs a spay, yesterday. However their charge was going to be at least $1500 maybe more. I cannot say enough good things about the staff and the facility. That said, this kitten was a drop off, we were not expecting to add to our pet family and what ordinary everyday working individual has $1500 in their pocket for a spay? I was told the high prices are for the convenience. Meanwhile HoneyPie may not make it until my vet returns. :( read more

The app is useless. It can't be used to get refills, send messages or anything after business hours. The vets are OK but this business model is awful. They can't break out of it, won't fax prescriptions to online pharmacies, don't check their messages regularly, can't seem to get all my pet's vaccines done at once "because they aren't due yet" (due in a week but computer doesn't show that) and it costs $700 for a well visit but less than that for urgent care. While we were on vac, our Molly's mammary tumors ulcerated and the bleeding scared the kennel owner (not surprisingly). We took her to Colonial Emergency on Sat. Molly was still eating and acting normal. As we expected the prognosis was not good. We chose to continue palliative care because she was not in pain and acting like Molly. Two days later, Misty had an annual exam. While there I mentioned poor Molly to Dr Harris. She told me about some things I could do to keep Molly comfortable. She constructed a little t-shirt to protect the ulcerated areas. I took Molly to see Dr. Harris the next day to be sure I had explained situation properly and we establish a plan for Molly's care. Infection was a big concern. We went home with some Oriental herbs to minimize any bleeding and OTC's along with the antibiotics the emergency vet had sent home. Within a week the tumors showed no infection and Molly didn't have to wear the distasteful Tee. After 3 weeks Molly shut down overnite. No treats, no food, no looking for laps. She decided it was time. When we went for our final visit, Dr. Harris came in with big hugs of compassion. Because of Dr. Harris, Molly had a wonderful final 3 weeks with many treat and cuddles. While it was hard to lose Molly, those 3 weeks gave us extra peace at that difficult time, Dr. Harris is not the first vet to give us such caring help when a beloved was ready to let go. We take our pets to Colonial exclusively because of the exceptional care we all receive. read more

All of the office staff we interacted with were great- both kind and professional. We recently needed emergency care for our cat on a Saturday after afternoon. Our Vet had retired. We called several Vets in the area. Either they weren't taking new patients or there was a 3 to 4 hour wait. When we called Colonial, they asked when can you be here! They treated our sweet girl with compassion and kept us informed. I felt completely disrespected and uncomfortable during my visit with my puppy Odin. I am multi racial and Odin is a pitbull mix and I am aware of certain stigmas and judgments about African Americans who own pitbulls, and I felt that they were assuming that I didn't take care of my dog in a very stereotypical way. My caucasian female friend gave me a ride to the veterinary hospital and the entire time they seemed to avoid speaking directly to me and kept talking to her like it was her dog. I was literally standing directly in front of the vet and she literally bent her body to look around me to speak to my friend, who was behind me, about MY dog. I left this establishment feeling completely disrespected, disappointed, degraded and honestly ripped off/scammed. I am a very hard working single father of two and I purchased Odin from a friend for emotional support, I love this dog like he is one of my children and the energy that was presented to me by the employees of this business was completely unacceptable. The only remotely positive thing about my visit was that the female receptionist who had checked us in was somewhat pleasant in our interaction. I had called to set up an appointment to get my dog his vaccines, because it is way overdue, simply because I work 7 days a week and I just have not had time or access to my dog for that matter, as he was staying with a friend for an extended period of time. I didn't even get him until he was around 4.5 months old, he is now 5.5 months old. He had recently started vomiting from what I assumed was stress because he has been moved around too much. I made it very clear that I was worried about him not having his shots yet and that I was coming there to get his vaccines; totally unrelated to the vomiting, but I saw it as even more of a reason to get them done as soon as possible. When I was calling to try to get him seen to get his shots, nobody told me that my scheduled appointment for 5:30 was considered an "urgent/emergency office call" which I was charged $67.00 for. Once I had arrived they said nothing to me about not being able to give him his shots, until after they had ran a test that cost me $44.00. I came to get his vaccines and left without his shots being taken care of and was charged over $100 while being treated like I wasn't even there. I am extremely unhappy with the service that was provided by this establishment and I will never ever be returning there, I had already planned to take my puppy to a free pet clinic for his shots that only takes place twice a month, but when he started vomiting and didn't want food when I gave it to him I became concerned and thought it would be in his best interest to get them done as soon as possible. When I returned home from the visit to this business he did end up eating all of his food without throwing it up, and I am much less concerned about his health now, and much more concerned about how I was treated at the Colonial Veterinary Hospital. I will never forget how the nurse bent her body to look around me like I was just something in the way. I suggest that if you are a male minority that you take your dog elsewhere, especially if it is a pitbull, and regardless of your race or gender I would hope that you would not support a business who mistreats it's clients based off of stereotypical thinking. I was treated completely unfairly and was never properly communicated with about the fact that they would be refusing to give him his shots(the whole reason for our visit) until after they had racked up a bill for me. I hope that this business can take a good long look at the culture that they are presenting and make a serious adjustment. God Bless. read more

My cat had a rare issue that required emergency surgery and the Vets here were wonderful and professional. They treated her really gently (unlike some places we had taken her to in the past--she's a kitten and the other vet we went to suited up like they were going to take on a 200lb mastiff) and we felt like she was in good hands. The facility was clean, brightly lit and inviting. Even though they didn't have any openings in their roster they found a way to squeeze her in on the next day surgery was available. My cat is doing well after the surgery so far and is recovering nicely. Would recommend! read more

My wife and I had to make the difficult decision of having our boxers front leg amputated due to cancer. Dr Trip diagnosed him and was wonderfully supportive, kind and compassionate. She was well informed and answered all my wife's questions thoroughly. Dr. Socha performed the surgery and all the pre-surgery workups. He called my wife every step of the way, explained everything, made sure all her questions were answered, and was very upfront with her. Junior had the surgery almost two weeks ago and has exceeded our hopes and expectations in his recovery. Dr. Trip had also referred us to several support groups for three legged (tripod) pets. These were nice because they showed what expect when he came home. We are so thankful to have the extra time with junior and for the support we got at colonial. read more

This is a follow up about Denali my miniature schnauzer. With a little investigation I found that the proper procedure for liver failure in a healthy older dog is to add a Shunt to by pass the liver and flush the blood to remove the ammonia from it. The shunt stays in place so the liver can heal. I was sent home to deal with this by myself. Do not bring your beloved pet, cat or dog to this place. Were they that incompetent or was it the money? I would have mortgaged my home to care for him. read more

They screwed up surgery on my 11 year old lab. He went in for ACL surgery on his LEFT leg. They prepped him and made an incision on my dogs RIGHT leg before they noticed they screwed up. It is just unbelievable how any vet hospital could mess up like this. You have the documents and X-rays in front of you prior to surgery. My dog now can't walk without assistance and the sad part is he still needs surgery on his left leg. I highly don't recommend colonial animal hospital. read more

Last year my elderly dog got sick and I had to go to Colonial because I had an after hours emergency. My dog had to be put to sleep. the bill was very large and I could not pay the whole bill that evening. they hounded me for days following, reminding me. This year my small dog was hit by a car and killed but my regular vet at Ithaca Vet was available. the cremation was less than half the price of colonial. I wil never go to them again. Several of my clients in Ithaca were also clients of Colonial. Although services were consistently reported to be expensive, I was lucky enough to attend several veterinary appointments with pets of my clients. An elderly Weimaraner recovering from spinal surgery has attended acupuncture sessions since shortly after her surgery. I attended two of her sessions and was amazed at how wonderfully the dogs adjusted to the setting, even while Colonial was going through an extensive renovation. The staff, both administrative and professional, are heart-felt and warm, and obviously care deeply for the animals who come to them seeking help. I would highly recommend Colonial to most clients. read more

I can't say enough about VCA. My dobie Rosie had major mouth/dental surgery, and Dr Harris and her team could not have done a better job. Rosie is a rescue dog, and has high anxiety when I have to leave her. They gave me meds before that calmed her, and she never seemed to be uncomfortable even after all they had to do. Dr Harris called several times to check up on her, and it was so reassuring and kind. I can't recommend it highly enough. I worked for a great Veterinarian for fifteen years. Until this experience, I hadn't found one that cared as much or had the skills I was used to. Please do your pet a favor, and visit VCA. read more

This is not my primary vet, but there have been several times when my vet either couldn't fit me in when needed, or didn't have the technology needed for the situation, and so I was referred to Colonial. I have been really please with them in every way, but ESPECIALLY that they are open really late and even have 24 hours call in service to check on your pet if they need to keep it over night. It is so great to be able to go to a vet at 9:00 pm when your animal is ill and you are worried about them. Everyone I've seen there has been professional and treated us well. Yes, procedures are expensive which is why, if you are going to own a pet, you need to be prepared for that, or get vet insurance. read more

Dr was very nice but they claimed I could call and talk to someone whenever I wanted to see how my very sick baby was doing .. never called me back the morning after so I drove up there a hour away after waiting 4 hours to hear back...the lady Dr was very nice at first but than lied about him biting her and has his head cut off to hurt me because I left a negative review on face book... They had indicate staff for the process they are charging....the guy that works there is a heartless man and I hope I never see him again... my bill was 1600 for barely any care besides a ultrasound which was 500 because it was an emergency which I didn't feel like they took him as a emergency because they did it 7 hours later.... and then 30 $ every 4 hours he was there for him to sit in a cage other than that iv and few meds to make him stop puking and some blood work...i also told them he was very allergic to chicken and corn and told them not to feed him that.... which they didn't seem to care about because they feed him chicken and rice which could have affected his breathing during surgery... The next day when I went to pick him up i said he's alleric to chicken and corn and I told you that yesterday and the vet said to me that he looks fine to me doesn't he.. food allergies dont always show up right away....I spent a lot of money finding out what his allergies were... There are so many things not right at that place .....I had my other vet ready to go do an emergency operation and they took there sweet time even coming to see me in the room as they knew I needed to go for the surgery and held him hostage till I paid the remaining 252. My friend was paying with his credit card as he did the day before. The remaining balance being 252 of a 1600$ bill and we couldn't leave untill we paid. I couldn't get my friend on the phone to pay the last 252 and I promised I would pay soon as I got a hold of him and he paid as I promised he would not even a few hours later...2 hours later they finally let us leave after we basically signed our life away .... my baby died on the operating table a few hours later....im not saying he would have made it but 2 hours was rediculous for them to make a very sick dog wait pooping blood all over there floor... karma will come back on the heart less man that works there... if anyone wants a amazing vet at very affordable prices feel free to pm me....I love all animals and to see them suffer because they want to make a ton of money is just mean and heart less.... your pet shouldn't have to suffer because they need top dollar.... he was only 4 years old rip my lil yoda read more
