Imagine a friendly-but-stern Bruce Willis working the front desk. The best way I can describe him is as a fitness DJ. "Hey, Mike!" Then another member walks in and John knows their name too. And another. He checks people in, remembers names, starts little conversations, and makes the interaction feel personal instead of transactional. That matters more than you might think, especially in a gym where most people are coming in after a long day and just trying to get their workout done. There's also a younger employee on the night shift who I regularly see cleaning, and I've genuinely noticed that the gym feels cleaner at night. The difference between shifts is noticeable. During some earlier shifts, there seems to be much less interaction with members, with employees sometimes looking down, talking among themselves, or spending time on their phones. At night, though, you feel acknowledged. John proves that good customer service doesn't have to be complicated. Sometimes it's simply remembering someone's name, saying hello, sharing a quick conversation, and making people feel like they belong there. Give the night crew their flowers. They've earned them.
