Therefore, I discovered this hidden treasure years ago. (Before that I tried a couple of other similar venues in the city and was disappointed.) I first learned about Ethiopian food in Atlanta, GA in the early 80's while attending university. Good versions and bad versions. Since then I have experiences both in diverse places such as Boston, NYC, St.Paul (MN), Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Oakland, Sacramento, Houston, Paris (F), Rome (I), Berlin (D), and some cities I don't remember. Lalibela in Frankfurt is one on the top 5 restaurants. The food is authentic and flavorful. Both veggie and meat dishes. (Many times only the meats are spicy and the veggies are bland.) Plus the owners are a true delight. Friendly, cheerful, they showcase their culture. We were just back yesterday with my best friend from college in Atlanta. She has been living in Hamburg for decades. I had not seen her for over 30 years. She came to Frankfurt to meet up with us while we were in Germany. I offered her several different cuisine options and she wanted Ethiopian. She loved all of it. Nostalgic flavors. Authentic smells. Plus the amazing hosts! We will always call me back.

A google search gave us LaLiBeLa Ethiopian food. None of us had ever tried that before so decided to give it a go. The place is very clean and comfortable. The owner was serving us and she was one of the nicest people you could ever ask to meet. One of us has very specific dietary needs and she went out of her way to make something that fit the bill. She succeeded! If you're in Frankfurt and want to try something different and delicious, you won't be disappointed if you give LaLiBeLa a try!

Likewise, for the main, the fish of the day (e.g., a pan-fried cod fillet on my visit) was probably just as good as anything on the menu. The bread plate was like a starter since it included a buttery crème fraîche dip. Also, the suggested pairings enhanced each course so I highly suggest going that route if drinking wine. Note there is also a breakfast menu, a power lunch menu (which ends at 2PM), and a dinner menu, I believe. This is a great layover stop for higher end Mediterranean fare and Michelin-quality modern European fine dining. Prices are high however. If possible, get the 3-course business lunch for best value. FWIW, this fine dining spot was opened by two brothers who worked at multiple Michelin-starred restaurants, therefore, the quality shined through.

Also interestingly to note, the decor is a bit profane in the dining room, so that is worth looking at. (Bluefin Tartare: B) - Their bluefin tartare is paired with avocado and ponzu, some classic flavors that work well. The presentation is also elegant. Unfortunately, the rice is a bit hard, which made this dish unpleasant but is otherwise tasty. (Pan Seared Duck: D) - While the duck was cooked nicely with a juicy pink center, I found the accompaniments to be unideal. The saurkraut is incredibly sour and overwhelms the dish, especially given the ratio of cabbage to duck. Furthermore, the dumplings simply tasted like a ball of flour, which was is unfavorable to consume. -- Food: -1 Presentation: +1 Price: E Atmosphere: E Service: +2 Menu: E Overall: +2 B Insta/Beli: @amei_eats

Oh yeah! This tiny…read moreplace is a short walk from a major indoor food market, and it's absolutely worth a try. We wandered in just looking for some simple ramen, and left with full bellies and eyebrows arched out of surprise. I had a simple chicken and rice bowl, and my friend had the vegetarian ramen. We were both skeptical about a vegetarian ramen, but WOW! I had to steal a few spoonfuls of the broth to pour over my rice, and it was a great decision. This was my first time having a chicken bowl and I never suspected such a small dish could have such a mighty impact on my palate. It's a simple chicken and rice bowl, with fantastically simple yet elevated flavors (great texture on the chicken). Absolutely put this place on your list the next time you're in the Altstadat area.

There were kind enough to put me at the bar. I got the Tonkotsu ramen with Chili oil and it was divine and bursting with flavor. Noodles were done perfectly and I had a marinated egg that was cooked to perfection. There was a line of people outside waiting when I was done. Really glad I came since I had a taste for Tonkotsu since Ichiran in NYC.

The food there is stunningly good, so I know what great Middle Eastern food taste like. And, I have to say this absolutely qualifies. If I close my eyes, I would swear that this were prepared by someone back home. The hummus is silky smooth, and flavorful without being overly garlicky. The tabouli is fresh and light, with just the slightest hint of mint to it. But, the falafel is the real star here. Falafel can be done in a way that's too greasy, but this is crisp and tasty, exactly the way an expert at the cuisine prepares things. Even better, the prices are very reasonable. And, because everything is prepared in a way that's not heavy at all, you will feel compelled to eat more. This is a very good thing indeed. The place is very small, with enough room for maybe eight people to sit, so you may want to order this to go.

This place in the morning seems to fill up fast with reservations, so we made sure we arrived a half hour after it opened. You come in, and basically seat yourself if you can find a table that is open. Menus should already be on the table, but ask if you need them. Again, learn some German and ask if the waiter or waitress can speak English. We were lucky that our waiter did speak English well enough to order. They do have English menus, but thanks to Google Translate, we ordered from the German one. Since I knew how to speak in German, I ordered for my husband an omelette with cheese and tomatoes, and I decided to try their homemade pancakes, which was actually a crepe with their "buffet" jam. The buffet was literally a shelf along the wall with all different kinds of homemade and store brand jams. Each was more spectacular than the next! Excellent choice for something different on the menu. My hubby's omelette was super yummy and flavorful. The service was not rushed in any way, and the vibe here is very relaxed and laid back. We could tell people were truly enjoying themselves and not rushing to go run off to do something else. If you don't have time to kill, this might not be your place. Come here if you're looking for an authentic Indian spot that doesn't hold back on the spice! This restaurant is a block or two from the Frankfurt Main train station, which makes it a convenient stop for folks transiting through Frankfurt like we were. We came for lunch Thursday afternoon around 3 pm, and to my surprise there were more folks eating than I expected to see given the late lunch time. The menu has a lot of options... the other location I went to focused on South Indian dishes like dosas and uttapam, but here in addition to South Indian dishes, they offer a huge selection of curries and rice dishes as well as Indo-Chinese dishes. Please note that this is a veg restaurant; there's no meat on the menu. My friend and I split the chappathi ($7.25) and the onion rava masala dosa ($10.50). The chappathi was good and came with two curries, a potato curry and an aloo matar (cauliflower pea) curry. Both curries were good, but the aloo matar curry was super flavorful and my favorite of the two. The rava dosa was really good too. It was crispy and had a good amount of onion filling. However, the sambar it came with was super spicy, the spiciest sambar I've ever had. I couldn't eat it at all sadly. It also came with different chutneys than what I'm used to, but the ones they had were okay. My favorite was the coconut chutney, and I'm not sure what the other (yellow) one was. The food was fine, but the service was super lacking. All of the servers weren't very helpful and sometimes even was a bit rude. If tipping was common here, I would give very little to no tip for the service we experienced.
