It became a thing to trek here every weekend for repairs. After the last flat, they ordered me schwalbes from overseas. That was months ago. (Pre-COVID visit) I don't know if this place just was trying to gouge us, or decided our cheap (by serious bicyclist standards) bikes weren't worth their time or effort. Tbh, it doesn't matter. We took our bikes in because they suffered some damage in our last move. We were charged for a tune-up and told that was all they could do because one bike needed a whole new brake system and the other one wasn't worth fixing due to issues with the gears. My husband was able to repair the bike with brake issues --it cost us about 20 dollars to fix. It did NOT need a new brake system. He's going to work on the other now, and I am betting that he will be able to repair that one as well. Either this place was hoping to sell us on new bikes, or were hoping to sell us on expensive and unnecessary repairs. Either way, that is shady as hell and important for other customers to know. read more

I've had mixed experiences in my two visits to Velowood. I first brought my bike in for some brake repairs and had a great experience. The guy who helped me was friendly and efficient. He quickly fixed my issue and offered additional tips on how to avoid future issues. He also pointed out an issue with my tires that should be addressed, and I decided to bring my bike back in another time to get that done. I came back on 8/4 to get the tire work done, and I was extremely disappointed with my experience. There was one guy working, and he was advising another customer regarding some customizations he wanted to make to his bike. I stood there right next to them for more than 15 minutes without being greeted, acknowledged, or even glanced at. It seemed like he was very deliberately ignoring me. During much of that time, the staff member was just at the computer looking at bike parts while the customer wandered the store, so it would have been very simple to say "Hi" or "Sorry, it'll be a few minutes". I eventually just left, and will be taking my business elsewhere. I can't tell if the guy was just an enormous jerk or completely ignorant of the most basic fundamentals of social interaction and customer service, but either way his behavior was inappropriate. read more

I really like this place. I've been to a few bike shops lately, as my old bike was about to go out on me. I was trying to find a place that sold State Bicycles in shop, and Velowood came up. They were really nice to me, and entertained my (many, many) questions that I posed before ordering my bike. What I liked the most is that I didn't feel like I was judged for wanting a cheaper bike, or really a bike that wasn't a super fancy road bike. Sometimes at other shops, I feel like I'm looked down upon since I'm at the lower end of the price range, but they treated me like any other customer here. They asked my opinion on small things, like brake line clips, and took the time to make it exactly as I wanted. I picked up my bike today, and it's just gorgeous. They gave it a once over, answered any questions I had, and I was out the door! I don't actually live very close to this shop, but I would be willing to make the trip for the service I get here. read more

These guys kill it!!! I went to this shop a once before for to buy a new chain and thought that it was just like every other shop, guys trying to make money off of people that didn't know better or because the location was awesome... That was not the case in the slightest! I went on a Saturday when shops are most busy and brought in a frame with a ton of parts to piece a bike together thinking I would be there waiting for ages and then pay an arm and a leg but was completely wrong. They were extremely happy to help right away and took the time to explain the tools and reasons behind what and why they were doing something. As with most, finances are tough and they were willing to help out a bit which was EXTREMELY appreciated!! If you are looking to purchase a bike they have them there, new or used along with frames too. I would definitely recommend them for setting up a complete bike to fixing a flat. I've been working on restoring a vintage bike, and I've come in 3 times for random things, and each time the guys at Velowood have been super friendly and generous: * I needed a rim strip for an odd sized wheel; they sold me some tape at a bargain price. * I needed new brake shoes in a weird size; they broke out a box of old brake shoes that they collect and gave them to me free with a purchase. * I needed a seat clamp. I brought a really finnicky job to Velowood, and Rebecca(sp?) treated the situation (which would have had me tearing my hair out and yelling) with impressive patience and professional demeanor. My clincher tire is always a b**** to get off and on my rim, with the risk of a pinch flat being a very very real risk. She took the time to get the job done right, while I sauntered off to Pinche Tacos (also a 5 star review I need to do) for happy hour. The only problem I have is that there is no tip line on the receipt - I think that she went above and beyond what was required on this job. - I will, however, be a repeat customer from now on. They do right! We bought a State fixed gear bike from Velowood about a year ago. It came with the standard 43mm State wheelset. Recently we started having trouble with blowouts on the front wheel. We changed the tube four separate times, twice on our own and the other two times we had Velowood do it... but the blowouts persisted. We explained the problem to Ian there and he explained that the tubes we were using may have been too wide for our tire and that the rim tape was possibly the issue. He happily replaced the tube and rim tape with no charge. Unfortunately we had another blowout! I brought the wheel back again and talked with Victor and Ian. They told us instead of waisting more time off the bike troubleshooting the issue, they went ahead and replaced the entire wheel with a brand new one again with no charge! Ian even spent extra time to true the wheel and it feels great! We will continue to bring our business here because they do right by their customers. Thanks guys! read more

We stopped in to get a new tire tube for my girlfriend's bike. The owner of the shop greeted us immediately and helped us as soon as he was finished with the customer that was there before us. He performed a full inspection of the bike's tire to ensure the new tube wouldn't have any problems and then changed the tube. He made certain the alignment of the wheel and gears were perfect before returning the bike to us. Very nice and courteous. Will definitely be back for further bike service and sales. read more

I like to use my sons mountain bike in Denver when I visit but the shifter didn't work well and the seat was uncomfortable. I took it to a bike shop that said shifters needed to be replaced. Decided to stop in to local bike shop in alley way by my sons house. What a surprise. These guys were great. Josh checked it out and told me he could try flushing out shifters for $15, if that didn't work he would try replacing for $130. Josh called back, flushing worked. What a deal! Then Vic set me up with a new seat and used wrench. Bike rides and shifts like a charm. This place is a gem. read more

Went in to have a stubborn pedal removed and get my steerer tube cut down. They were able to remove the pedal from the old crankarm in minutes. It only took them a few hours to help me get my handlebars and stem looking proper. The coolest thing is this, I notice a few little extras that were just above and beyond service touches - I had just installed a speedometer and they zip tied the wire at the caliper to clean up my home installation and put nice matching end caps on my bare brake cables where I had adjusted my housing length. I called around to a few bicycle shops and they all quoted me a hefty price to look at my Kona Smoke (and didn't offer to check the Smoke before tuning it up to see what needs fixing and adjusting). Josh started our conversation by telling me he'd check the Smoke and see where to go from there. A simple $20 later my Smoke was fixed and I was happy. I got such good service at Velowood Cyclery that I was compelled to create an account on yelp and write a review. I brought in a crappy bike I had bought for $35 and hoped to get tuned up. One guy worked on it but realized the entire frame was bent and considering it wouldn't be safe to ride, decided to not charge me the fee and apply it to the purchase of a whole new bike. A few weeks later they called me and said they had found something for me. Went to pick it up and you can tell a lot of work was put into the new bike. The first time I went in, I'd just built a bicycle on my own for the first time, and I asked for a safety check. The guy went over the bike with a fine tooth comb (figuratively, not literally) and still didn't charge me a dime. I had to convince him to let me buy him a coffee next door.
