This is a neat little mid century modern shop with fairly priced items. I had been searching for a credenza and managed to snag a 1950s piece from here. It had originally caught my eye but I noticed a few scuff marks on it - Jon willingly put it on hold for me while he did a bit of refinishing and let me come back to the store and make my decision. He did not charge extra for the refinishing which is a huge, generous plus in my book. Highly recommend giving them a look! read more

Wow! Simply wow! My partner and I walked into the space the other day and discovered the most amazing bar. The name "Velvet Goldmine" couldn't describe this vintage furniture shop any better. I stopped in to browse one day, and set my eyes on a gorgeous round coffee table. I couldn't get it out of my mind, so I went back the next day and purchased it. As someone without a car who lives in a 4 story walkup, i constantly have to pre-plan how to get things to my place + up the stairs. I was about to ask if I could pick it up later this week, but the employee said he could deliver it + bring it upstairs for me in half an hour. What service! This was a way better experience than ordering furniture online, paying for delivery and then assembling it - plus, it's a beautiful authentic mid-century table. What a wonderful mid century furniture gem! Each time I visit this beautifully laid out store the pieces are meticulously refurbished by the owners, Kurt and Jon. They're so knowledgeable on the history of each credenza and table and sofa. After finding some gorgeous dining room tables my husband and I settled on one with original leaves and fabric on the chairs. It was hand delivered in amazing condition and will be cherished with every meal and dinner party we have. I can't gush about this shop enough. Fabulous furniture and thoughtful owners! read more

Walk-in because the beautiful furniture draws you in, take home a piece (or two or three) because Jon and Kurt know what they're doing. I don't know if living around the corner from VG is a good thing or not, but I have a feeling I'm going to have an apartment mostly furnished by these guys. This has quickly become our favorite mid century modern antique store in the city. It's a small storefront but has a broad range of items including vintage cocktail glasses, clocks, vases, and of course furniture. Compared to other mid century antique stores in Chicago, Velvet Goldmine is VERY reasonably priced. Though we really didn't need more furniture, we just bought a pair of danish mid century chairs that were beautifully reupholstered. I am sitting on one as I write this!
