Parking: This location has a private parking lot, with plenty of parking and it feels very safe. The only negative is it is not paved. 4 stars. Staff: The employees were very kind and kept talking about how muscular and tall I was and asked me for tips. Very fun conversations. Service was great and our orders were delivered perfectly. Mom almost died last year from stage 4 cancer, but we healed her with conspiracy medicine. Now since cancer she gets confused sometimes and had us sitting in the reserved seating, and the staff did not ask us to move. Very friendly which is typical for country Ohio people, love it. 5 stars. Food: Parents ordered ice cream and I ordered a shake. All three of us enjoyed our orders. 4.5 stars. Ambiance: Volume is not too loud and conversation inside is easy, but if you sit at the outdoor tables the live music was too loud and hard to hear conversations. Indoor has air conditioning and about 15 tables for sitting. Outdoor has 7 tables for sitting. This location also has a shelter house for events and a pond and restrooms. 4 stars. Overall: This is a great place to come on a weekend and get ice cream with family, dates, or friends. The ice cream will get you in the door, but it's the whole campus at Ye Olde Mill that makes the experience memorable. The barn-like exterior and active Water Wheel are definite tourist attractions. The outdoor area has a hut with a few arcade games that is next to some al fresco seating. The inside has a very small museum which takes visitors through the history of company, and there's a small gift shop as well. But of course it's also where you can get your fill of dairy goodness in a plethora of flavors. Personally, I liked the bacon in my milkshake more than the dairy part. But I'm a bacon fiend, so take that for what it's worth. Depending on where you reside, getting to Utica can be a trek. But the destination is worth it. read more

Stumbled on this place when we were in town for a baseball tournament. This place is a great find! We just had the ice cream. Velvet ice cream, it was delicious. I had a mocha chip milkshake that I was very pleased with. My wife had mint chocolate chip in a cone, a very generous helping! I believe they also have some regular food, but we were just here for dessert. Take some time and walk around the property. There is a building where you can learn about the history of this family business. There is a small lake/pond and plenty of benches to enjoy your ice cream outside. It's very scenic! Velvet Ice Cream has been a childhood favorite since I can remember. Every year before 4-H camp we would stop at Ye Olde Mill and get a sweet treat. I love walking around the pond and enjoying the mill. As an adult I still love this spot. They have a small cafe and a wide variety of ice cream available. The even offer a few flavors without milk in them for those milk sensitive folks. I got the orange sherbet, it was so good! While we were there they had some local cloggers there performing. It was an enjoyable afternoon watching the cloggers and eating ice cream. It is fun to walk around the space and learn the history on how Velvet came to be. If you live in central Ohio, this place needs to be on your day-trip list! The grounds are historic and beautiful, and their selection of ice cream is fantastic. Service has always been helpful and friendly as well. There is a decent-sized parking lot, so you should be able to find parking even if it's packed. And when the weather is nice, it does get packed. We try to visit earlier in the day before it gets busy. You can sit inside, outside, or stroll the grounds while you eat your ice cream. They used to do tours of the ice cream factory before covid, but I'm not sure if that resumed. It's just under an hour for us to get to Utica from the Columbus area, so we like to combine trips to Velvet with trips to the nearby Branstool Orchard. I highly recommend checking them both out. read more

We drove an hour and 10 min probably wouldn't make the drive again. Hoped there would be more there to see. Ducks were fun to feed that was the high lite! We had lunch on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Food was good but price for what we ordered. Guy singing was good although loud in the small space. We had a fabulous time here at the memorial weekend ice cream festival! Stay away from this place as much as possible, Their Ice Cream isn't really Velvet anymore anyways as it is produced by robots at Hudsonville Michigan plant. It may have the Velvet name but it's really not. It may be the same recipe but when it's mass produced by robots it looses something in its esthetic. They had their recall from Listeria Bacteria, closed down production & hired a Michigan company to make their products. It's just not the same anymore. read more

We learned all about this place and the business they do. There are 12 people who work in this factory for 8 hours a day plus a cleaning crew that works 8 hours a day to clean and disinfect the entire room. The factory consists of one large room and one freezer, the oldest known working freezers. They take serious measures to make sure there is absolutely no contamination to the products. It's completely sanitized. No clothes shoes or hair will ever come in contact with this ice cream. The employee are covered completely as they work. These 12 people put out an unbelievable amount of ice cream each year. They also stay up on the flavors, creating new and exciting flavors. The bourbon pecan is wonderful. It's so creamy and buttery. Oh so good. This old farm used to be a hideaway for slaves. It was a community pool, it burned down and was rebuilt. This farm had been a lot of things over the years. They used to have to pay people to harvest ice in order to make the ice cream before they had freezers and electricity. They could only make rally small amounts at a time. It was a hot commodity. Usually only the rich could afford ice cream. There are ice cream containers dated back to when they first began making ice cream. There are tools from where the ice was harvested. There's a pond with a bunch of ducks that are treated like family. They stay year round swimming in a pool of the condensation from the coolers at the factory. They are constantly kept cool. Sometimes there's so much condensation it's pumped to a second pond down the road. They have one of the oldest working mills. Unfortunately, the mill operated with the ohio river to generate energy for the plant, but the river redirected itself and is nowhere near the mill. They connected all the condensation lines to the mill to take it to the ponds so the mill still operates. There's a lot to learn here, it was worth the trip. read more

Ye Olde Mill, I love you. I try to visit the home of Velvet Ice Cream once every summer. Once you make the drive you'll find a restaurant, museum, park and of course, ice cream. My favorite flavor is Buckeye Classic. If you need a summer touristy activity, this is a great place. I've never been, but you can tour the factory. Our family had an awesome time here at the Olde Mill. They have a short nature trail which my 4 year old enjoyed immensely along with a little playground area for him to climb all over. They have a free tour/informational of the ice cream factory that discusses what goes into the ice cream, the history of the mill, and a look at ice cream being made in the factory (via a big window into the production line). Get there after 1pm and they will hand out free samples at the conclusion of the tour - yummy! We stopped for a double scoop in the ice cream parlour, they have all kinds of flavors and a scoop is huge! 2 was maybe too much but we managed to force it down some how! They also have an ice cream "museum" which was a little sparse, but good for kids, with the obligatory gift shop attached. read more

I've grown up on Velvet Ice Cream, starting with my Grandma being the restaurant manager when I was a child, and continues with my step father just retiring last month from there! So I may be a little biased. There is usually a wait in the summer for ice cream, but its worth it. Be patient with the servers too, they are local kids who usually are working their first job outside of the home/farm. Service can be a little slow, but worth it. They have the usual flavors, chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, etc, but they do have specials too. A seasonal flavor rotates in and out. They also have 'contests' for new flavors so you really never know what kind of ice cream you might get a chance to have. There is a playground on site as well as ponds that you can feed the ducks and fish in. It's great for a nice afternoon 'date'. read more

Love this place. There is a pond with ducks and geese, a walking trail, jungle gym and lots of old stuff from the original mill to see and try to identify. I also love their Ice Cream.
