I used Velvet Sky Bakery for my wedding and I'm so glad that I did. From the first day we sampled the cakes, we knew we had to use this bakery. The cakes were extremely moist, (even after a few days in and out of the fridge). Jordan can be a bit slow at emailing back, but she was extremely helpful in the decision making process and helped us figure out what we wanted our cake to look like! For the wedding, I decided to have a mini cake on top of a cupcake tower. Our photos are not back yet, otherwise I would post a photo in this review. Jordan did such a good job with the decorations (blue and purple flowers on top of the cake with twinkle lights) and the taste was out of this world. Also we ended up having 7 flavor of cupcakes, and Jordan was open to being as creative as we wanted her to be, with the flavors! I'm not big into sweets, but I do love some good mini cupcakes. My cousin got 4 different flavors for her baby's christening from velvet sky (3 dozen mini (one bite size for around $40) She picked up the day before and had refrigerated. Unfortunately, not only did the flavors not wow, but the actual cake was extremely dry. I am not a baker and have made cupcakes that were a few days old that were much tastier and way more moist. I thought maybe it was a fluke with the Oreo, (in addition the Oreo piece wasn't fresh) but the chocolate were also dry. There was probably over half of the 3 dozen ordered leftover which says a lot because they're tiny and you can usually pop several easily when made properly. I guess they looked pretty, but there's just so many other great options in the Philadelphia area that make a much better product. read more

Not a huge fan, but will suffice if you're in a bind. I had tried them once before without much wow factor, but the owner has since changed and i figured I would give it another try. The cupcakes they offer seem to be the same flavors as before, with the addition of some seasonal ones like pumpkin, which I did end up getting and trying. The pumpkin cupcake itself was pretty good, but I'm not sure what's going on with the hard crusted top on all the cupcakes I have ever tried from them. Is that a style? If so I dont really care for it. The icing was too much and too sweet as usual, but the one saving factor was that the cupcake itself was tasty (minus the crust). The chocolate peanut butter was a disappointment, and I will never get it again. Weird fake sugar taste in my mouth moments after swallowing. Overall, not really a fan. Looks a lot better than it tastes, and at $3 each, no thanks. To me, "sugar" or "sweet" is not a valid flavor. More like "cavity"! read more

An adorable, coffee shop/bakery with a mix of artwork, rustic tables and bar top, and friendly staff. The macchiato is a true macchiato (espresso with a dollop of cream), which the staff kindly pointed out and inquired if I wanted a "Starbucks-style" macchiato with milk (whole, soy, or almond) and a drizzle of caramel. The result was a far better caramel macchiato than Starbucks produces--likely better beans, and not overly sweet. An assortment of muffins, scones, cupcakes, cookies, and bars tempted. I chose a banana walnut muffin with some trepidation, as often non-homemade muffins are sickly sweet. I was pleasantly surprised to bite into a moist muffin (don't!) that tasted much like my own banana bread (i.e., just the right amount of sweetness). The clientele seems varied: fathers with their under-10 kids, couples designing wedding cakes, families getting hiking treats, teens picking up cupcake orders for graduation parties, etc. This shop definitely seems to be a neighborhood gathering space. I'm a food snob and especially a cake snob but am happy to say that Velvet Sky is one of my top favorite bakeries in the area! The flavor options are creative and delicious and Jordan and her team and incredibly gifted when it comes to cake decorating. My favorite cupcake flavor by far is the caramel macchiato! Her homemade caramel is to die for! Below are some other flavors I've tried: Caramel Macchiato: 5/5 perfectly balanced with bitter coffee and chocolate, and the sweet and salty caramel. Yum! Red Velvet: 5/5 some of the best I've ever had and is insanely moist with delicious cream cheese frosting Mint Chocolate Chip: 4/5 subtly minty (not toothpasty) and very chocolatey Chocolate Raspberry: 4/5 I could eat this raspberry buttercream as is with a spoon. Tart and sweet! Chocolate Chip Pancake: 3/5 overly sweet frosting with the maple syrup but is a genius concept Vanilla: 3/5 buttercream is yummy but the vanilla cake is dry Vanilla with Chocolate: 2/5 again cake is dry and chocolate buttercream doesn't have much chocolate flavor. Just as a heads up, 90% of their cupcake combos are atop either a chocolate or vanilla cake base with flavored buttercream and toppings/drizzle. I find their vanilla cake to be on the drier side but the flavor is great and their chocolate cake is superb! The exceptions to these of course are flavors like red velvet and some season flavors (lemon, pumpkin, carrot, etc). Also their buttercreams are all American Buttercream, so they are on the sweeter side. They also carry a variety of gluten free and vegan flavors which is a huge plus! My only qualm is that some of the staff (particularly the owner) isn't necessarily the warmest so customer service has room for improvement. They are much more than a bakery serving a good cup of Joe and quick lunch bites which include quiche and soup. (I recently had a vegan coconut curry soup to-go which was very tasty!) 2. The cafe section of the shop makes for a nice quite place during the day to sit and catch up with a friend or get work done over a sweet treat. Scones, muffins, mini pies, brownies, buns, cookies or cheesecake are in the cases! 3. They offer a HUGE variety of cupcakes made with the freshest ingredients available in some truly unique flavors! Over 30 different kinds! Offerings change daily and some are only available seasonally. Most can be made gluten free and/or dairy free!!! Minis can also be made with a two day in advance order. You'll find the usual suspects here as well some show stoppers such as Mint Chocolate Chip, Bananas Foster, Peanut-butter Cup, Cookie Dough (a fan and my favorite), Chocolate Chip Pancake, Salted Caramel and Honey Lavender Vanilla, to name a few. They even have a Caprese flavor! Tomato cake with fresh basil buttercream and balsamic reduction drizzle. Have yet to try that one! The creativity here is second to none! 4. This is home, sweet home for cupcake connoisseurs like myself. They have it all, from the classic chocolate / vanilla combos (with or without sprinkles) to unique flavors such as Oreo, peppermint, raspberry and lemon. The icing is perfection - it's creamy and light and not overwhelmingly sweet like the overhyped Magnolia Bakery cupcakes. The cake is moist and fluffy and tastes homemade. You'd think they'd d a better job of getting the word out to their clientele. We decided to give them another shot a few weeks later, good news: they were open! Bad news: the cupcakes were not very good (and we bought 6 different flavors.. and they were all subpar.) Also, they had a Yelp promotion going where you got a $10 voucher for $5. When we paid for our order, they only applied $5 off the total instead of the $10, which we didn't realize until we were already in the car driving back home, and it wasn't worth turning around. Needed a soy free wedding cake and a number of bakeries didn't do that. Velvet Skye came through and the cake was delicious. They also created a cute cake topper unique to the bride and groom. We also ordered cupcakes and they disappeared off the table. I had to grab one before they were all gone. They were so friendly and delivered the cake on time on a cake stand. Did not go here!! I have ordered 3 times now, only once did I receive a decent tasting cake and that was 2 years ago. The recent cake I ordered was so dry! These cakes are likely frozen for a few days and then thawed out for the day you need it. I'm telling you from experience, save your time and money! VBS is not worth it. Also, not to mention that I was repeatedly given different cake prices for an 8inch cake size. I don't know if the owner is overwhelmed and forgetful or just gives random prices where she sees fit but that is not okay. Today I ordered a Chai Tea Latte and it was lukewarm and did not have a pleasant taste. But, I am writing this review because I am concerned about possibly being overcharged for my items. Since they have a 5 dollar minimum on cards, I bought a water to reach the 5 dollar mark. After ringing up the two drinks, she told me the total was $8 even. She didn't seem to be familiar with the the register so I asked about the price just to double check because $8.00 seemed high and she replied, "tax." Chai: $3.94 San Pellegrino: $2.00 After checking my receipt once I got to work, I was ultimately charged: $8.31 ??? So not only was my latte was almost cold and really unappetizing, but I believe that I was charged incorrectly...never again. While I'm here...Cupcakes are also almost always dry and taste old! Was planning to do a cupcake tiered cake for my son's wedding. Ordered 60 cupcakes (10 flavors) to sample at bridal shower. Although the carrot cake was moist and tasted good, the other nine flavors were dry, dry, dry! I think maybe the chocolate were just a little less dry than vanilla or lemon based cakes. The icing was super-sweet. In some cases, like the chocolate chip pancake, it was so sweet as to be inedible. The other flavors were underwhelming. I only discovered this place when it opened up a cafe! I am primarily reviewing the cafe, but in the course of coming to the cafe I have tried numerous baked goods so I can talk about them as well. This cafe is awesome, and I think it is an incredible asset to the community in Jenkintown and the surrounding suburbs. I frequently came to this part of the world before I lived here (I now live here) and I want a place to hang out which is not Starbucks, where I can either converse with friends or work on my laptop. This place is great for both! The atmosphere is bright and cheerful. There's a little bar overlooking the street, with a nice window and a pleasant view. It's a calm setting that I think emphasizes the best of the small-town aspect of Jenkintown. There's a lot of colorful artwork on the wall, and I've liked the music they play in here too. The seating is practical. The only thing missing is a comfy sofa, which I think would be a big enhancement, but I see how they may not want a sofa given the space they have and the items they serve. The people who work here are SOOO nice and they are just awesome people with great senses of humor and intelligent and interesting, and many of them are talented musicians too! I also find it's a friendly atmosphere with a sort of neighborhood feel. People who come in here are really friendly too. I live in the city and I think this cafe is friendlier than any of the cafes I've been to in the city, in the sense that other customers in here strike up conversations with me much more often than happens in the city, and I like that a lot. This sort of thing could contribute to making me want to live here! Next comment...loose-leaf tea! YES! This place serves loose-leaf tea. I am not much of a coffee drinker but I love tea, and I love it when places use loose tea instead of tea bags. The brand they have chosen, Octavia Tea, is also very high-quality. I've tried three of their teas now, and I have enjoyed each of them. They tend to brew them on the strong side here, so if you like strong tea, just order tea, and if you like it milder, you might want to ask them when they brew it. Positives I love how they've reconfigured the place - so bright and welcoming with the eat in tables, espresso coffee drinks and expanded items like quiche and muffins for sale. The staff was very nice. Negatives The cupcakes are no longer out of the world delicious - guess they didn't sell the recipe with the place. We found them smallish, way overly sweet icing and some were dry - not "special" at all. Also their drip coffee was not good. I guess the original owners were not marketing/merchandising experts but they were excellent bakers with one awesome product and with the new owners the reverse is happening? I won't be buying any more cupcakes but I might give a muffin a shot next time I'm in the neighborhood - it's a really cute place. read more

I really wanted to like this place. I tried a cupcake here several months ago on a whim and I thought it was a little dry. Fast forward to today. I decided to give it another try and went in to order a cake after reading all the great reviews. The baker was busy so while I waited I decided to purchase a cupcake while I waited to see for myself if I had misjudged earlier since everyone else seems to like it there. Not only did the baker never come out, the cupcake was DRY and then I found a HUGE HAIR in the icing. I told the cashier and all he said is its probably one of the bakers. I love Velvet Sky like a fat kid loves cake. $12 for 6 cupcakes is the daily special. Icing is thick, rich, and perfectly sweetened (as opposed to Magnolia's which is uber sweet). Whenever I try a different bakery or cupcakery, my first priority is the red velvet cupcake. If they can't make a good red velvet cupcake, you've already lost me. Velvet Sky has a very moist and flavorful red velvet cupcake. The cake almost melts in your mouth. I would have given it four stars if it were not for the icing. The icing is too thick and too sweet for my taste. I had to scrape some of it off because I am confident I would be bouncing off the walls had I decided to eat all of it. Overall, the cupcake was good and when I'm in the area, I'll definitely return. They have a nice selection of other cupcakes, as well as cookies and brownies. This is my fave bakery of all time! Last week I got a 12 pack of cupcakes in delicious red velvet with cream cheese icing, some strawberry/strawberry frosted, 2 carrot cake, 2 chocolate with Oreo icing, and a chocolate with cinnamon sugar icing. They are all so good! Unlike some other places, when you buy your cupcakes here they have a great packaging system that doesn't cause the icing to slide off and you can easily slide your fingers in the sides to pull the cake out easily. I've seen their full sized cakes but never had one, I'm thinking for ordering one specially made for my bday in January. I wonder if they can make one in the shape of a horse...? read more

I came to Velvet Sky Bakery for a custom birthday cake and boy did they deliver! I asked for the cake to be modeled after a Macallan 25 and the end result? I have never seen anything so detailed and beautiful. With a lot of bakeries, the product can come out to be a little bit messy but the bakery's work was so precise and clean! The lady who worked with me was also super patient as I explained what I needed and she was very kind throughout the whole process, even texting me a picture of the cake after it was finished.
