To the Point - Fresh, flavorful southern style cooking that taste home cooked while upholding great service. They say welcome home when you enter the building, and they were spot on. The space isn't huge but it's very cute ambience with a chandelier of plants cascading the ceiling with simple decor. We both ordered chicken and waffles, the chicken is perfectly fried. Crunchy but not too much or less batter that holds a juicy thigh. The seasoning felt simple but the flavors were anything but. The waffle was big and dense with the outer layer having a subtle crisp that reveals a soft interior. Again, very subtle seasonings, they are not overloading the food with masses of flavoring, these people know how to work around their ingredients and let them shine. The chicken and waffles get a phenomenal 9/10 We also purchased an order of Fish and Grits to share with the lobster sauce on the side as I have a slight shellfish allergy and the waitress insisted on putting it in the side even though I told her it was ok (I appreciate the consideration). I rarely order this type of meal but man do I not regret it at all. I'm not even sure what kind of fish I consumed but it was so perfectly fried with the gentlest breading that complemented the perfectly cooked fish. Again the seasonings are subtle, it's not really the boldest of flavors, it just tasted good. The grits were savory while not being overwhelming when combining the fish which ended up being very satisfying bite. The Fish And Grits gets an amazing 9.5/10 I will be coming back, I'd like to try more of what they offer. These people are masters of frying things to perfection while retaining the core flavors of the protein. The staff was friendly and you can feel the soul they breathe into the place. I was in the Jenkintown area for work and turned to Yelp to find a local lunch spot--that's when I discovered Welcome Home Café, and wow, what a powerful little café it turned out to be. As soon as I walked in, I was warmly greeted by one of the owners. It's a husband-and-wife team, which always earns bonus points in my book. I was promptly seated, given a menu, and immediately overwhelmed--in the best way--because everything sounded amazing. I ended up asking the owner for help deciding, and I'm so glad I did. I chose the chicken and dumpling soup (they rotate specialty soups weekly) and a loaded sweet potato. The soup was incredibly flavorful--slightly saltier than my personal preference, but thankfully I tasted it before adding anything. The thyme flavor really stood out and made the dish comforting and delicious. I'd absolutely recommend it if it's available when you visit. The loaded sweet potato was topped with jerk chicken, one of my favorite seasonings. You can adjust the heat, and I went with how it comes--very hot! I loved it. Spicy, bold, and full of flavor, with the sweet potato cooked to perfection. They also offer unsweetened, fresh-brewed iced tea with free refills, which is always a huge plus for me. The café itself is small, but while I was there, there was a steady flow of people coming and going--it's clearly a popular hometown spot. Everything on the menu looked fantastic, so I'll definitely be making a return trip to try something new. They serve both breakfast and lunch, and they also offer catering, which makes this spot even more appealing whether you're stopping in for a quick meal or looking to feed a group. We both got the grilled vegetable salad, and I added salmon and turkey bacon to mine for double protein. So delicious and kept me full for hours! I recommend getting there early for lunch like we did, around 11:30. Because by 12, most of the tables were already taken! I had read on their website that the chef was a woman who moved to Los Angeles for 10 years, and then moved back to open this place. We were given a nice greeting when we walked in. I was surprised that it was so small inside, but the people in there looked so cozy . We were given a choice of tables , and made ourselves comfortable. I ordered the French Toast Casserole, and my cousin ordered a Breakfast Wrap. When I tell you the food was delicious, you better trust and believe! We both could not eat all of the food so we took the rest home. I will go back because I want the Fish and Grits, and I want to try the Chicken and Waffles. The prices are very reasonable. The service was warm and friendly. They got a loyal customer for life. The shrimp and grits gave me NOLA (New Orleans) vibes!!! The grits are topped with cafe sauce (that's when I felt like I was in NOLA!) Incredible flavor in that shellfish based sauce and when you mix it with the creamy grits it sends you on an exciting journey even though you've never left the table. Shrimp was cooked beautifully and nicely seasoned. Fish & grits is really good too. The breading, seasoning and cook on the fish is PERFECT. French toast cassarole was a surprise only because the toast isn't the type of toast you would expect, it was really good but tastes more like a bread pudding. I liked that you had a choice of turkey or beef bacon or sausage as a side. I really want to give Welcome Home five stars but I have to consider the fact that it's limited seating which extends the wait time for a table especially if your party is larger than 2 people. It's really not a good dine in for more than 4 people tops (and even that's pushing it) because of how small it is and your party might not be able to sit together. In some instances they can push tables together for you but it gets a little complicated. They have high tables and low tables but again very limited. It's also difficult to find parking as there is no parking on old york rd. but there is a parking lot behind the restaurant but it fills up fast as it is shared with other stores. If you can find a spot on the lot or side street you'll be fine. Just be prepared to wait for a table or wait for your meal. The food and service is worth it. The welcome home Café really is a welcoming place. It's cozy. The people who work there got a thing are freindly. Even got to chat with the owner. Great people with vision of what they want in a restaurant. Healthy and creative menu with choices like salmon or fish with breakfast for a healthy protein and sandwiches with salad rather than french fries on the side. Of course things like french fries and bacon are also available and I am sure they are awesome. Based on the other dishes. By the way, the salad was excellent fresh salad. Nothing seems to be pre-cooked or unfresh. I had a grilled chicken sandwich that was tasty and juicy and perfectly cooked. My wife had a vegetarian sandwich that was also excellent. West Avenue Grille was closed, so we decided to try this business out. Well, it didn't feel like home. Parking: a township lot with pay per slot, then you have to walk around the corner to the entrance. Atmosphere: very loud because it's so small. You can reach out and touch the next person at a different table. It seats about 20 uncomfortably. Service: John was our server, and let's just say our experience with him was very odd. He was very fidgety and sometimes impatient and forgot our request. Another table's food was brought to our table, so that left the rest of us without food at all. Another table was there before us and hadn't eaten after we received our food. Orders took a while to come out. My food took so long that I started eating off my daughter's plate. We couldn't get drink refills in a timely manner, either. It was an awful dining experience. John got into a back and forth with a person who appeared to be the cook, so unprofessional. You can hear everything because the place is very, very small. The kitchen area is so small the equipment and people could barely fit!! My suggestion is to remove John and put him in a position where he isn't in contact with the customers. If not, I don't think people will return. Drinks: tuemric ice tea was pretty good. The lemonade was good also. Food: I'm so annoyed about the service. I didn't take pics. Our table ordered the following: Fish and grits with waffles. Those who ordered said it was good. The fish was fried just right and was nice and golden. One person ordered another piece. Seafood rolls were enjoyed by the person who ordered. I had the salmon BLT and fries, and that was a bust. My food came out last, and everyone had pretty much eaten their food. The bacon was fried too hard, the salmon was tasteless and got lost in the bun, and the aoli sauce didn't taste like any I've tasted and not in a good way. I ate some of the fries, and I threw my salmon BLT away. Overall, our experience was not good. The food gave it the 2 stars. I'm not sure that I would go back. read more

I don't know how I hadn't been here yet, but I ended up bringing a friend for a lil breakfast before she headed back to DC. It was such a cute little place and we went early enough that seating wasn't an issue, but I could see it getting packed in there quickly. I had the avocado toast with a side of breakfast potatoes and not only did it hit the spot but I was able to bring some home because of how filling it was. The green juice was clearly fresh and so refreshing. Their breakfast meats are all either Turkey or beef, which we didn't realize but didn't really mind much. The breakfast potatoes were a little on the greasy side but delicious and we liked that we had the option to do with or without peppers and onions.
