Be careful giving this business your credit card, they will sneak in premium price increase without notifying you for to approve them. Imagine you agree to pay $30 a month which is a lot of a local paper, but then they started charging $58 and $66 for two different months. I signed up for a 1 year digital subscription in September. Unfortunately the results have been awful. I am unable to access the content even after logging in. I called technical support which is in the Philippines. They said that they were having a "computer glitch" and were unable to access my subscription. They said to wait for 3 or 4 days for them to try and recover the data. REALLY? 3 or 4 days? What is this 1985? I told them I wanted to cancel my subscription and of course they cannot do that either because their unable to access their system. I believe i signed up during a Black Friday promotion, only to never be able to access my account. When trying to sign in, or even contact customer service via chat, it only tells me that my account is not found. I've tried with both of my only two emails, my only name, address and phone number to no avail. It's amazing that they can't find my email when they send me promotional junk daily and email me to let me know thethey are raising the rates drastically on a service I've never been able to access. I tried contacting customer service via phone as well, and experienced long hold/wait times that make it impossible to speak to someone for assistance when working regular Mon-Fri work hours. I have requested the Star delivery for Sunday only. Since July 30, 2023 I have never received a copy of the Sunday edition but my computer says I get credit or some thing on August 20, 2023. It says the delivery wasn't there because it was not started But it was started so the computer says not started not started missed delivery credit canceled what there's nothing else I can do. I get credit for something did you say have not started? I don't know what to do. The bottom line is I signed up for Sunday delivery in July for the printed edition of the Ventura County Star no deliveries to this point ! I don't even want to give them 1 star. I was paying $2.99 per month for my online subscription when last month it went up to $9.99 without letting me know ahead of time. I went online and cancelled my subscription right away. I called them a few days later and was told I would get a refund within two weeks. Two weeks later I called and told them I didn't get a refund. They told me they would request the refund again and it would take up to two weeks. No refund two weeks later. I called the parent company because not only did I not get a refund for the first $9.99, they charged me another $9.99 for September. I was told they would refund me the first $9.99 and reverse the second $9.99 because it was still in pending on my credit card. Today the second $9.99 showed up as a transaction. I called Gannett again and was told they probably can not give me a refund for either one. I was charged a second $9.99 when my account had been closed for a month. I've been getting their Sunday paper for a few months. It is an alright paper, doesn't go above and beyond with their local News. Some of my bigger complaints is that they put the most random stories on the front page. When we launched two Astronauts from American soil last month, and it was the first time in 10 years; you would have thought that would have made front page news. I was looking forward to saving that paper when I got it Sunday morning, but NOPE nothing was even in the paper about it. Another huge complaint that I have is they require you to use a credit card in order to subscribe. I have been a faithful subscriber of our local newspaper for over 30 years. I pay my annual fee for 365 days of delivery. So, now we get no Saturday paper, will I get credit, I doubt it. Last Tuesday & Thursday no paper, then no paper on Sunday either. Of course no Saturday delivery.... today, Thursday again no paper. Yes, I read in the paper you are short on delivery people, not my problem, I paid for the paper to be delivered. They also want us to read it over the computer, I don't like to do that. The residents of my residential Community for Seniors in has purchased an annual, 7 day a week, newspaper subscription from the Ventura County Star for at least the past 10 years. However, when the Covid-19 pandemic began we put our VC Star subscription on-hold. Approximately, two months ago we contacted the VC Star to restart our newspaper subscription and we were told, after talking to multiple people and spending several hours on the phone, that the VC Star would honor the eight (8) month pandemic hold we had earned. They went ahead an agreed to an eight (8) month credit for the newspaper. So, this seemed very fair, and we were very pleased. However, over the next two months we received only a few newspapers, delivered on an intermittent and random basis. When we called to complain about this problem, we were transferred to multiple representatives again and spent many more hours on the phone. There was no resolution. Then we started receiving billing statements, stating that we owed the VC Star $336.34 after two months with perhaps 5 newspapers delivered and a mutually agreed upon 8-month credit, due to the pandemic hold. The billing notices stated that our account would be cancelled if we didn't pay our bill immediately. So, I personally called the VC Star and was told by their representative that at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic our representative (committee secretary) had agreed to pay for an online newspaper subscription when the hold was placed our regular subscription. This accounted for the $336.34 owed amount. It is funny that the VC Star bills never mentioned anything about this. I was also told by this representative that our account had been cancelled because we had failed to pay the owed amount. As the president of our resident activity committee, I talked to the person (the committee secretary) who called the VC Star to place our account "hold" and that person informed me that she never discussed or agreed to the purchase of an online subscription when our account was placed on hold. She stated that she would have bought this to the committee's attention if this had occurred. I already knew this to be true before I talked to her. I have talked to many friends and neighbors recently who, like me, had subscriptions to the VC Star for 30, 40 or even 50 years back (most of that time the newspaper was named the Ventura County Star Free Press). Like me, most of my friends, and neighbors have cancelled the subscriptions to the VC Star over the past several years because the VC Star has caused them so many frustrations and so much stress through misbilling, failing to deliver newspapers and by having extremely poor customer service representatives, who fail to solve customer's problems. Unfortunately, I have seen this happen many times when hometown newspapers are acquired by giant corporations (as the Ventura Star was). I would have given zero (0) stars for this review if I could have. I highly recommend that you don't subscribe to this newspaper unless, at some future date, the giant corporation that now owns this newspaper makes some major changes (which giant corporations our not known for). read more

Some off shore help operator told me to send my bank statements to Indiana. Do not subscribe ... They will eventually bite you and not even say sorry. I love the Ventura County Star! Even though I do not read the newspaper as much as I used to the Ventura County Star is the place to get your news just about anywhere in Ventura County. They do a good job of writing and their photographers are top notch. They do a good job of balancing world, national, state and local stories. So many papers have a habit of either focusing on local or national but the Star does a great job of focusing on both. They seem to be doing a good job of finding new ways to supplement their income and revenue stream in these days when many people get their news online or from a phone app. Not a Sunday goes by in Ventura County where you do not see someone on the corner of a busy intersection selling the Sunday paper for a buck. Seems like a pretty good deal if you ask me. We have a subscription here at my residence but I have no problem buying the paper when I am getting ready to sit down for lunch or even if I am just looking for the regular Fry's Electronic ad. This is a hometown paper I always have no problem supporting. :0) read more

I've been a subscriber to VCStar off and on for many years. Today, I discovered that VCStar charged me twice for the annual price of my digital subscription: $59; first on July 25, 2022, and again on January 8, 2023. I contacted their customer service representative today, who advised that I had opened two accounts with VCStar. Of course that makes no sense, and I certainly did not open two accounts. Nevertheless, the representative told me that although the two accounts is VCStar's mistake, they will not issue me a credit and advised that I should dispute the charge with my bank. Wow - I'm not the only one having problems with the Star! Delivery service has gotten progressively worse - especially since USA Today has taken over. Customer Service sucks - Delivery issues? You need to call someone in DETROIT...! I've called, emailed, and gotten the same old blah-blah-blah "we're really sorry" we'll take care of this" etc. Good luck getting an actual person to talk to - I called once & asked who the Distribution Manager was, and was told they had no names or numbers - only some code they put in the computer to file complaints... So far in 2018 I've requested (via their website) 3 vacation holds - and they continued to deliver the paper EVERY TIME! As I told them - nothing says "I'm not home" like papers piling up in your driveway! And on other days the paper never shows, or is delivered by maybe 8:30.... It's probably just a matter of time until I get fed up (as many of my neighbors have) and cancel the paper. And I don't like their online version, either. After contacting the BBB, I am still having issues with the delivery service of my paper. What part of bagging the paper and sealing it don't they get. Yes, it's bagged with the end open, so the rain, drizzle goes right into the paper. I can't tell you how many wet papers I can't read. I just wanted the online version but the large, screen covering pop up ads took up all my reading time closing them every 60 seconds just to be able to finish an article. Many of the articles are 1 page per pic/paragraph click-bait. I cancelled my subscription today. It's not worth it honestly, even if it were free and I don't want to deal with the paper version and subsequent recycling. My neighbors are elderly, I always pick up those vc star news paper that's thrown by the sidewalk for them. The paper never makes it past the front steps or even in their lawn! It's always by the curb of the street. (free for anyone to just take) I take it up to their front porch or my daughters take it up. Mind you the yard is not fenced and it never makes it on their property! The past few weeks it's soaking in the rain! Come on workers! Let's be a little more nice and at least leave it on the front steps! I have been getting the VC Star for 20 years. I enjoy the local news and have had no problems with delivery. But I just received a letter that my rate was going up to $48 per month! I called into Customer Service and asked what the everyday rate is and she said $28.95. I cancelled my order on the spot. That's ridiculous that they charge a long time loyal customer almost double. We have Sunday delivery only. Can't seem to get that right. No paper was delivered. Last Sunday it didn't come until well after 11. Now we have to wait until sometime this week to get a replacement paper delivered. It's not the first time this has happened and it shouldn't happen at all.
