Great little paper, when it's delivered but here in lies the problem...the delivery service to our area of Moorpark is horrible. At least twice a week we don't receive our paper. Service is horrible. It took me call after call after call to get them to instruct whoever delivers my paper to not just dump it in the street or in the gutter at the end of the driveway. I've been a subscriber for 30 years and have never had such awful service. After over a month of complaints, hey finally got him/her to toss it a few feet onto my drive so it wouldn't be wet or run over. But since then, my paper has been missing 4 times. When you call, all you get is a recording that says they'll credit my account. Today I hit '0' until I was finally connected with a human and was told that a paper would be delivered soon. That was at 9 am and at 4 I have no paper. If I had any alternative for news coverage for this area, I would certainly try it. Worst customer service ever!! They need to hire employees that speak and understand ENGLISH!! I just called to get information regarding my monthly bill and was told I was scheduled for FRIDAY, SATURDAY, AND SUNDAY ONLY! I have been receiving the paper every day of the week for the last year or so. I can't understand where they are getting there information!! I finally discontinued it! HORRIBLE. Decline complete. Very unfortunate. Local news coverage is insufficient. Witness an event or the aftermath and no coverage whatsoever; time and again. Use of USA Today for national news is very disappointing. Home delivery is a joke. My Sunday delivery is missed once every 4-5 weeks. Have to call an awful automated system to obtain a paper. We have been with Ventura County Star since 1994. VC Stars prices have always been fairly reasonable though they've gone up a lot during the last 20 + years. Sometimes the print is upside down or smudged or the newspaper is torn, but we always get it before 8 o'clock in the morning, I really enjoyed having newspapers delivered A couple of days ago I received an invoice for $156.70!! I thought it was a mistake?! I just got off the phone with the Star, damn it ain't a mistake and that is the discount price! had to let it go no more newspaper delivery :( read more

The paper is OK. The customer service is HORRIBLE. Try the LA Times instead. I signed up for delivery. A week later after no papers and a few emails and a phone call (all ineffective), I decided to cancel. 2 weeks later I am still getting responses to my initial emails about non-delivery. Every email is from a different person. A couple of them reinstated my account for me - without my permission. The paper finally started coming. Yet, I'm still getting email responses from customer service about my initial problem - so they cancel my account - again without my permission. Companies that think they are saving money by out-sourcing to other countries are sadly mistaken. They are losing more customers due to incompetence than they could ever make up for. read more

I just sold a daily newspaper and moved out here. I saw that the VCS had delayed reporting from the national sources for local election reporting. I called them for an update, somewhat of a normal experience for newspaper owners where I am from. They have no managing editor. They just have a news manager. That means they have no employees. They just pay people like probably $25 a story to write with no one on staff. They gave me attitude, again something unknown to me as a newspaper owner - showing someone without newspaper experience - the national news shows had local news earlier than this local news source did. I would never stand for this type of employees to work for me. read more

Ventura Couty Star--- Negative stars for this awful paper. Only subscribed so my 94 year old mother would have her paper in the morning to read but she only gets it once in a while. Very very often not delivered at all. Today is no exception nor the last three delivery days in a row. When it is actually delivered, it is thrown in the street where she can not retrieve it. they had promised to make sure it was PORCHED for her because of her age but FAILED miserably. I called the Customer Service number to change to digital only. Was told the 'special deal' emails I keep getting only apply to new subscribers. Unsurprising, but thought they'd negotiate rather than lose a subscriber. Wrong. I said cancel. I was told my billing cycle had ~$6 worth of days left and they would not refund less than $10. Discussed this with the off-shore phone rep who was not agreeable, citing company policy. Pointless discussion. It'll be gone in 10 days. It's a country rag anyway, really only good to me for the weekend ads and occasional restaurant review. Good riddance! read more

Do NOT give these people any account numbers. If you try to stop the newspaper delivery. You will be ignored and they will continue to take money out of your account. I dedicate 5 minutes a day to read the Star because that's all there is in it. I dedicate 10 minutes on Saturday so I can read the LOCAL high school football scores. Oh, but wait, our LOCAL newspaper doesn't stay open long enough any more to get the Friday night sport scores. Their blurb says, "check back tomorrow". It's pathetic when the LOCAL paper can't cover LOCAL high school sports in a timely manner. The online version sucks too, because of all the stupid pop up ads. read more

I bought a 6 month subscription to the paper and from day one have had nothing but problems getting it delivered. I have talked to the online chat many times to complain and they keep saying it will be resolved and to this day I am lucky if I get a couple papers a week. The digital version absolutely bombarded me with advertising. The first paper I received was full of one sided views and opinion. If I could give 0 stars I would. For the first two weeks they delivered to my door. Then they stopped and it gets delivered outside my apartment complex. I have called 5 times to have it delivered to my door. On top of that I'm not even getting the paper half the time. I don't know if someone is taking it or it's not being delivered. I would know if they'd deliver to my door. Also, who knows where you're calling when you call customer service. They are all foreigners and they all say the same thing. I like reading the local stories and keeping up on my community. BUT, I have the digital subscription and it is not good. You cannot search stories by date if you're looking for something from a week ago. And if you can, it is very hard to figure out how to. Also, they charged me for a delivery to an address at another location and did not refund the difference after I called. Since I moved to Ventura and signed up for the VC Star this past summer, the subscription rates have been erratic, and their customer service unacceptable. I don't feel I'm unreasonable. In San Jose we subscribed to the local paper (Mercury News) and the SF Chronicle. Eventually we cancelled the local paper for similar reasons - bought out by large company and quality declined. We appreciate the local news, and also the Los Angeles time for their editorial content. Today alone I was unable to get their automated system to recognize the word "billing" on 3 different calls. On the fourth call I was on hold for over 200 minutes (beginning at 12:30 pm) before I gave up. Their live chat system was unresponsive for nearly 30 minutes. (Some one finally did come online abut they were unable to negotiate a lower rate.) their "out of state" customer service center. The first and last time I called to question my bill I pretty much got the response - to just cancel my subscription. They must not need any readership. On that occasion I emailed as many email addresses at the VC Star that I could find, and that apparently worked as I no longer was having automatic withdrawals for bills I never saw. My current concern is to suddenly receive a bill for $36 for four weeks. That is unacceptable. And when I look back at my account, I really can't see any consistency to their billing amounts. My preference would be to receive the VC Star for the same amount I pay for the LA times ($20 for four weeks). I understand that they have a bigger customer base, but they also put out a bigger paper. I guess I'll read it at the local coffee shop along with the free Breeze and VC Reporter. The Ventura Star lacks in local news and is run like a high school newspaper. It is suppose to be our only local newspaper in Ventura county but most of the news is cut and paste from the internet or USA Today. More space is allocated to obituaries than hard local news. The only local news is about crime, obituaries, fund raisers events and advertising. For $300 a year anyone can get the Wall Street Journal or USA Today for the same price with packed full of news and intelligentsia stories. I like a daily paper so I am a 20 year subscriber, but since their cut backs and reorganization's they have reduced the newspaper to practically no news locally and world and national news that was on TV the day before. I guess my biggest beef is that the newspaper will not publish views they oppose, in particular my letters to the editor are mostly put on the website where they are not read or they fail to print them at all. The leaders of the paper screen news so it is slanted to a liberal readers. Being more conservative, but understanding, I can't get my opinion expressed. The last few years since we have this political division the newspaper has gotten worse. I am going to asses my options of other newspapers to read and express my opinion and will probably cancel my $300 dollar subscription. Oh I forgot..........the number of pages to the Newspaper has been reduce in half and weekday you're lucky if it's 9 pages of news. I never realized it, but the Star Newspaper censors the news. It's one thing to pile on news it prefers, but when they sort the news politically it becomes a propaganda machine. I believe stories and headlines are slanted towards their liberal opinion. Of course this should only be on the Editorial page. Even the Editorial page is controlled. I write conservative letters and they refuse to print them. firing off three or four letters and none are published. The letters published are almost all defame the President and there is no way to respond. I call that censoring. JUNE8,2020 I COULD NOT TAKE IT ANY MORE. THE BIAS REPORTING DURING THE DEMONSTRATION AND LOOTING WAS SO UNFAIR AND ONCE AGAIN THE NEWS WAS ALL ABOUT WHAT'S GOING ON IN THE EASTERN STATES. THE PAPER IS A DISGRACE TO JOURNALISM. AS A RESULT I HAVE DISCONTINUED MY SUBSCRIPTION. IT'S A WASTE OF MONEY TO BE PAYING $300. I received a post card from the ventura county star newspaper telling me that I am going to start receiving "premium additions" and getting billed for them. I contacted their web-site and chatted with Eric who told me they are not optional and if I do not want them I can contact the ventura county star each time and request a credit. I told him this was crazy and immediately canceled my susscription after being a customer for ~30 years. He got snarky and said they are not forced on customers and all I needed to do was contact them each time and request a credit. This is not a way of improving customer satisfaction. Force a magazine on customers and bill them and make them go out of their way to get a credit several times a year. What a pathetic business model. read more

I made a comment on one of their recent Facebook posts making the observation that the way they worded their post left several readers confused. Reading the comments, it was clear that they misunderstood the story, as I had. Only after a subscriber with access to the full article posted a clarifying comment were the facts made clear. I simply suggested they reword it to clear up confusion. This sparked an amicable conversation among other readers who felt the same. Rather than thank us for our concern, our comments were deleted and I was blocked from their page. Ridiculously irresponsible journalism. read more

After receiving today's Star and reading the headline about the Comey hearing, we are cancelling our subscription. It was the last straw. ( I would give it NO stars if it would allow me to) We are retired and watched the hearings and saw a completely different hearing than the Star. The reporting has been going downhill now for some time and it now costs almost as much as the Wall Street Journal, which is much more credible and thorough. You often see articles in the Star that just appeared the day before in the WSJ. More than 50% of Ventura County (and this nation) is Republican and you do not provide balanced reporting on anything. read more

So after getting the paper delivered 3 days in a row with no problems, we now haven't received the paper for the last 3 days. Talking to customer service is pretty much a waste of time because all they tell you is "We'll have it re-delivered. " but it never is. I even requested a new courier for delivering the paper which is the only way to fix our delivery problem and they laughed and said they couldn't do that. So it's time to cancel our subscription for this worthless publication and get one that cares about their customers and doesn't lie about deliveries they won't make. Customer service is awful!!!! I bought the paper because I felt bad for the little girl selling them. She didn't tell me I needed to cancel the paper after the papers I had paid for in cash were over. I never got a notice. (In fact she asked for food and drinks when she came to our home.) They just kept sending them. I had moved from this address 6 months ago and just received a bill. I called to get the charges removed and they would not. As an ex employee of the Ventura County Star, I continually see poor print quality, weak story lines, the obituaries are horrible, their customer service is not very good and as a whole, I choose to subscribe to another newspaper. Their advertising has seen better days and the advertising manager, Brad Lanfranco, in my opinion, well, let's just say they could have made a better choice. As a matter of fact, their claim to be the main news agency in Ventura County is true as there are not really many other avenues to choose from. I hope they can pull it together. read more

I have been a subscriber for many years and generally satisfied with content and delivery. I am a morning commuter that leaves for work at 6:30 am. My paper is never delivered before 6:00 am while I get up at 5:30 am just to have 30 minutes to have a half hour to read the paper and have my coffee. I have lodged me complaint with the Paper but the problem has not changed. My morning paper is now an evening paper. read more

We have been receiving the Ventura County Star for years. Recently, we decided since we have iPads, to only receive the Sunday paper. We do the same with the LA Times. So far the Star's "E" edition is a nightmare. We can not depend on it to be published and released in the morning. When I called to complain, the person on the phone could care less. I took my complaints to their Facebook page and that person actually lies, telling me the paper was sent out via email and it must be my email provider. Today, after telling me it had been sent out, I double checked and they then admitted there was a problem. Today's paper was emailed at 12:56 PM. Real good for a morning paper with mostly AP stories. The L.A. Time "E" edition works flawlessly and is delivered before 6:am. read more
