My husband and I went to the Vernon Area Public Library for the Games for Grown-ups program. This is held once or twice a month, where adults can come in and play board games with other adults. They had a wide variety of games to choose from. We played a game with some other people and had a nice time. The library itself looked nice with lots of other things to do. Beautiful library. Excellent service, wonderful selection on books videos. You can down load the app . If they do t have an item they'll find it at another library. You can also down load Kanopy on your tv and excellent selection of various genres of film and music. Private rooms to have a study group or meeting . They provide a selection of laptops you can borrow. A area in the front if you need a beverage or snack with vending machines. Comfortable chairs if you want to curl up with a book. Variety of classes. Book clubs for summer for the little people. read more

Superb staff with an incredible collection of everything the community needs. VAPL has great patron programs (i.e. author visits, etc.) , thousands of CDs, a huge number of books and computers for use by patrons, a lovely environment and best of all, excellent librarians providing great customer service. I GO to this library at least 1+time every week, raised our kids here (started coming back in the day to the old teeny location) and look forward to future visits. Bravo! Keep up the good work VAPL! They really did a great job on the remodeling except for the dropping off books area at the drive thru! There's not enough room for a big van to drive up and drop off the books without backing up to get out! I love the automatic doors as you enter the library! The kids area is really great for social distancing, there's only one chair for each sitting area! There's also a take & make kit for kids to take home and do! It's really not too busy during the time when we were there, around 2:30 pm on a Monday afternoon! Great service and friendly staff, always willing to help! read more

So this is my library... kind of stinks that it is so far away. It is a beautiful library nonetheless. I love that I can come here and check out books, cds, video games, DVDs, and blue-rays all in one stop. Everyone here is super friendly and always helps me find what I need. It had been a while since I went to the library because as I mentioned earlier it is kind of far from me, so I often opt to just buy the books rather then borrow them from the library. I currently work really close to the Deerfield library and found out that Illinois has a program where you can borrow books from any library. The only problem was my library card had expired after several years of inactivity. So I made the journey out to the Vernon Area Library. They set me up with a new card and even loaded it with a dollar worth of printing. After setting up my account, I went to the kids section to find a picture book I wanted to create a unit around. The only problem was I could not remember the title of the book. The librarians were very helpful when it came to assisting me in hunting down my mystery picture book. Even when I couldn't find it, they kept searching. Our determination paid off because I finally found it! The only downfall is that Vernon Area Library is now remodeling, so they have certain sections closed off. They should be finished remodeling around May 2012. Hint: Check in on Four Square and you get to pick out a free book at the front desk... pretty nifty! read more

Fantastic library! Nice size. Very clean and kept. I love the modernized technology with reserving books, book ready notification emails, due-date emails, check-out yourself, etc.. :) Totally different from when I was a kid. Love technology. Lots of windows so it's open and bright. Staff seems somewhat friendly, although I've run into 2 very-crabby staffers. One man being particularly short with patrons. So I steered clear of him. They seem to have some weird hours, so check if they're open before going. I would definitely recommend this library. read more

Great baby reading programs led by Ms Kelsey. They are short, half an hour, to the point. They start with a song incorporating each baby's name (socialization). Then we read books while interacting with baby (brain development). They've had pop up, colorful, black and white, multi-textured, lenticular, and other baby-appropriate books. After some sessions they have baby play time with toys they subsequently Lysol-wipe. Sometimes they also bring experts on various baby topics. My now-toddler learned to love books so much he was excitedly turning book pages before age 7 months when such is part of an 18 month developmental questionnaire. read more

I came to the library looking for a book that I need for grad school....well that's not entirely true....I was looking for books that I could reference in a paper, without actually reading them or knowing what they were about...silly paper guidelines. Anyway, when I walked into the Vernon Area Public Library, I was immediately reminded as to why I spent so much time in libraries when I was a kid. They have almost anything you want, for free!! Ashley and I made our way to the CD and DVD collection and rented about 10 movies and 10 cds each! I don't want to pay to download music on iTunes, so I rented a bunch of Pink Floyd and Rolling Stones CDs and uploaded them into my own iTunes. Ashley added to her music collection by renting a bunch of Zach Brown Band CDs. We rented comedies, dramatic movies, scary movies, etc. And I'm not sure if it's just this library, or all libraries, but the collection was pretty up to date. Fairly new movies were on the shelves (like ones that came out earlier this year and in 2012). New CDs also stocked the shelves. It kind of makes me mad thinking of all the money we have spent at Redbox and on iTunes. This is obviously just a little section of the library, if I ever got into reading, I would probably never leave the VAPL! read more

Being a nursing student for the past 4 years has led me into *many* libraries throughout chicago and the northwest suburbs. Let me tell you, if you're a person who needs a silent study space in order to get their work done, DO NOT GO HERE. 1. I cannot concentrate 80% of the time when i come in because the loudest people in the library are the very people that work in it: the librarians. There have been countless times where I've walked over to a staff member to tell them to shut the hell up and be more more mindful of the sound of their voice because it's a one floor library with lots of open space and no walls in between areas, so it's really easy to hear things even if you're far away from where that noise is coming from. . Every other library I have been to, the librarians whispered to one another and made sure not to disrupt the patrons. When I was here two days ago, they were doing remodeling, so not only did i hear constant thuds and screeches, there was also some sort of laugh-fest going on between the employees, which made me approach them on two separate occasions. 2. There are only 3 closed study rooms, you have to sign up for them usually, and you can only stay for 1-2 hours no guarantee. This is ridiculous and very inconvenient because that is not enough time to do serious studying, plus you eventually have to move all your stuff and move somewhere else, and that can be very annoying. 3. Questionable wi-fi service. More times than not, my internet slows down when I connect to their wi-fi, or it doesn't work for long periods of time unless I consistently refresh the screen. Well stocked, light, bright, small café and great programs. The staff is always eager to help you find or suggest a great book, or even suggest one of their many playaways. They have a great selection of periodicals, DVD's and video games. They also have a few convenient drop-off spots to return your books if a trip to library is not on your agenda for the day. read more

I took my family here on "Passport Saturday" to get the kid's passports done. Boy, do they have their operation down pat! They had a small army of experts ready to help you get through that tricky process of filling out forms, taking the right size and type of photo, what info to photocopy, what signatures needed, etc. When we were done, they double checked all docs, and made us raise our right hands and say an oath. So official. And we paid $80 for the passport and $25 service fee each. Whew, so glad they had this program to help us get it done or otherwise it would have been a very painful and expensive process if we hired an expediter. Kudos to Congressman Brin! read more

I've always been a big fan of libraries, but the way that VAPL has adapted to the current times and the local area is impressive. Regardless of the environment you want, it is there. I can bring the kids and we can look around and even play games. If I want quiet for serious work, I can find secluded areas to concentrate. If I want to get some things done, but still be somewhat in a social space, it is easy to find a comfortable chair and relax. I love the fact that they put refreshments and an area near the front that can be more social, yet doesn't distract from the other areas. The only suggestion I would have would be to put more comfortable chairs and maybe some more social spaces. It is an excellent mix of a Starbucks/Panera atmosphere and a traditional library. read more

Now that Cook Memorial Library in Libertyville is under construction, this is the next closest library south of the district, and boy is it a nice library. There's probably a ton of $$$ that has been invested over the years into this library, because it is extremely spacious, has a ton of books, wi-fi throughout the building, and an almost university feel inside. This may become my 2nd home for a while as I try to study for the GMAT exam (unless of course I land a new job in the coming days). Being home to the Stevenson High School district (creme de la creme of the Lake County high schools), you know you're getting the best resources here. read more

Can't believe there are only 7 reviews for VAPL! My family has been coming here as long as I can remember and many wonderful memories are formed here. There are great library programs/resources, summer reading programs, etc. The librarians are kind and helpful and the library has an extensive book, magazine, DVD, CD collection (DIY/cooking/research/popular novels/multi language). The recent remodel opened up the library floor. The DVD/CD area in particular is much easier to navigate. VAPL is one of the only places I have consistantly been coming to for 20+ years and it has been fun to see its transformations. read more

My family and I will no longer go back to this library. I agree with one or two of the other reviewers when they said they thought it had a racial overtone. I am not white, nor am I Jewish and it was very clear from the youth department that I was not wanted. Or should I say, not important enough to be helped. I have never felt this way before but must say this last year has been extremely awkward when I am in there alone or with my family. I thought that maybe I was viewing it incorrectly so I brought a friend. He is Jewish and we were there, he felt uncomfortable with what he saw. He said I need to reach out but honestly, I do not want to go back. He agreed. Since then I have told several other people and shockingly most have had some sort of bad experience as well. The people that I spoke with were black, Latino, white non-Jewish and handicapped. It really spoke volumes that those of a certain race/religion did not have a bad experience. I will go out of my way now to be a part of a library that does not exclude or belittle people. read more
