Great place, amazing staff and excellent selection of really cool boardgames you won't find at Target! If you play magic the gathering or Pokemon the trading card game you should definitely come by. If you're just starting out or thinking about starting out this place is excellent. I'm fairly new to it and found staff and customers to be very friendly and informative. As a somewhat newbie myself I did not feel intimidated at the Magic the Gathering Prerelease events and felt very comfortable asking dumb questions. Everyone is very cool and approachable. First and foremost, the Magic the Gathering crowd is great. They are respectable players and friendly. The owner of the business, who goes by "Dee", is also friendly and is definitely doing a good job bringing up this new shop. I give it 3-stars because there is nothing "new" in the store. It's average. Sure, the players and manager are good people, but that's in nearly EVERY store I go to in the Bay Area. I come here when I visit my friend who lives a 10 minutes walk away. My last visit was rather unpleasant. I signed up for a 4pm draft and it didn't fire due to lack of participants. That's okay, because there is another draft or two at 7pm. I was still at the store, and when it hit 7pm a draft fired up and I was not a participant. I was in the store for about 5 hours at that time, playing EDH and modern, but Dee did not transfer my signup for the draft earlier to that draft. So I was excluded from multiple drafts in the store that day and it was very disappointing. Dee was very apologetic, but illogical. Otherwise, the store's singles still lack. It's a relatively new business so I understand. But if you're looking for singles in the Bay Area, Versus isn't the prime spot for it. Dee uses "TCGplayer Average" prices for his sales WHICH IS NOT HOW YOU HANDLE A BUSINESS. A business needs to be competitive, and if your prices aren't going to beat the internet, then your sales will suffer. Back to the positives: the events here are cheaper! $11 drafts and $2 standard are hard to beat, but Versus' prizepools are easy to beat. I'd rather get relevent store credit for winning a draft rather than packs, but that's okay. 3 stars seems to a harsh review in comparison to the others, but it's not. "A-OK" is the perfect definition, and the "2-star" definition "I've seen better" (Eudemonia in Berkeley) is also relevant here. read more

You will find a wide range of skill levels ranging from people who are just learning the game to those that compete in large tournaments. One night on my friends birthday we all decided we wanted to play a board game and so we called in and asked if they had Arkham Horror in stock since I've been wanting to play it and we wanted a new game. With a little too much excitement, I said we were on our way when he said they had it. When we got there I just had a stupid grin not sure what to do with my social anxiety mixed with my excitement. I think he saw that and just asked "Arkham Horror?" I nodded and he showed me where the games were. (My first time here, I googled game stores in SF). Instead of pushing me to buy games, he made sure I was indeed ready for Arkham Horror and I'm glad he did. I think that was the point where we decided to get another game as well. We ended up playing Betrayal at House on the Hill for the next 10 hours, then when we woke up we played for another 10. My friend had an awesome birthday. After a week we finally pulled out Arkham horror and she ended up falling asleep while we were reading the instructions, haha. It's a good thing we ended up getting another game thanks to their suggestions. We were given a lot of attention and whenever we pointed at a game, it was explained to us thoroughly and I think we were able to make a very educated decision based on what we like. Versus is the store that got me back into magic. Being conveniently located near where I live, versus is also easily reachable via the muni L train. Awesome store. They have a great selection of board games, cards and they are very friendly and knowledgeable on all of it. They can even order you something if it's not in stock or if they don't carry it. They have a great crowd of people everyday doing MTG drafts and tournaments along with commander on Wed. They are located right next door to a pizza place that will deliver it over to you while you play. Great atmosphere and I made new friends quick. Versus is doing a great job of building a nice gaming community in Outer Sunset/Parkside. They host a ton of events for Magic: The Gathering, board gaming, and Pokemon and run a very smooth ship even when the events get quite large. Everything was on time and on schedule, which is really rare for a store of this kind. The staff and community are both incredible. The neighborhood is also a plus, with a pizza place and a great coffee shop/bakery on either side and dumplings across the street. There's even a large street parklet right outside. The facilities are clean and very well maintained and they are very welcoming of players of all ages and skill levels. It's definitely a family friendly environment. The only thing I could ding them for is that the prize support for tournaments is a little weak, but that's a small price to pay for such a great place to play in. read more
