I have been driving past this store for the last two years completely unaware of what a gem it is. Recently I decided to try and get myself and my wife into MTG knowing full well it is quite daunting for new players. Low and behold the staff member completely understood what I was looking for and set me up with some starter decks and everything I needed to get going, telling me we were sure to have a good time. Expert move, we proceeded to have a fantastic game night and just might have found an awesome new passtime for us. Besides that, when I was picking up cards I couldn't help but notice a bunch of other people all excited to gather and play inside in some organized event. Versus Games is so great, that I come 3,000 miles from Philadelphia to play their Magic the Gathering Pre-release events! Ok, so I happen to be in SF for a conference every year during the pre-release, but still! I choose Versus Games over all the other stores in the Bay Area. The events are well organized and the owner is friendly, knowledgable and accomodating. I stopped in to browse and the owner took the time to show me how to play a new Star Wars based game, and I think I'm going to start buying and playing it! Excellent local game store with frequent and well-attended Magic the Gathering events. I got back into MTG after a long hiatus by playing draft with friends here! I originally came to Versus looking for a new place to play and I'm glad I did. Not only is the store incredibly clean, and well lit, but the staff are very accomodating and friendly as well. They offer great prices on Magic: the Gathering, Pokemon, and various board games as well. Versus is a dream come true for local gamers in SF. For a local magic the gathering player like myself, we didn't have a place to purchase and play. We would have to travel all the way to Berkeley or San Jose and yet there were so many of us in SF. So when D (the big bald sexy owner) came along and opened up Versus four years ago, we were all ecstatic. I still remember his soft opening when he invited a handful of us over for pizza and shared his vision of what he would like this store to be. Till this day, he has strived his best to make that happen. Every time I go to Versus, I would be greeted on a first name bases. The environment is friendly and casual so nobody is ever intimidated. The staff is always helpful and ready to assist. Any time I'm looking for a mtg product (even if it's just a single card) Tevin and Megan are right on it. Versus also has a sizable selection of boardgames and other TCG. Every Tuesday nights, they try to demo a new game for the inquisitive gamers. The one time that D didn't have the board game that I was looking for, he didn't hesitate to order it for me. Recently, they have been trying to revive the Pokemon TCG and push Final Fantasy TCG. They make room on their calendar for people to gather and play which isn't something a lot of other stores will do. The biggest icing on the cake about Versus is that they have an EXTREMELY nice bathroom. I feel like D prides himself of that room because it is always kept clean. When I moved to San Francisco, I tried a few game stores looking for a place to play magic... Versus Games was by far the best. Even though it's the furthest from my home, it is always worth the drive. Here are some reasons: 1. They are CONSTANTLY having events. You can play magic every day, pretty much every hour if you wanted to! 2. One of those events is commander nights, a personal favorite. Lots of great players are there every week, and I've made quite a few friends here. 3. There is a yummy, well-priced pizza place next door that will bring over a slice so you don't even have to pause the game! 4. The space is always clean, and they usually have music or a movie playing. 5. They have some good options for accessories all over the price scale. 6. Their pre-release events are awesome! After visiting and playing at many shops in the Bay Area and Santa Cruz County, I can honestly say that D [Dee?] and his team work hard to maintain a fun and inclusive setting for both players and passersby. Awesome spot! Having just moved to the city I walked in to the store to see what it was all about. D (the owner) was very receptive and introduced me to everything the store has to offer. It was so welcoming I signed up for they're Magic League that day, sat down, built a deck, and played many of the other league players there. All the players were super welcoming and always willing to play or give you advice. The store is small but very nice, clean, and efficiently organized and has plenty of table space. Booster packs are resonantly priced (4+tax). D stocks a great range of sleeves at or below the price I've found them anywhere else. He also sell pretty much every mtg pack or set out there. In addition to magic there are a bunch of board games for sale and weekly board game nights. Check out their facebook page for a calender of event (of which there are many). Just yesterday a father and his two young sons came in to play for the first time. The more I go, the more I realize that Versus Games is bigger than a store. It is a community. It has a huge Magic: The Gathering player base but there is also plenty of enthusiasm for the board games available. It is an entirely welcoming environment for new and old players of all games alike. Conveniently located on Taraval so the L train takes you right in front of the shop. I used to go solely for Magic but it's fun to indulge in the board games as well. Games like Takenoko and Settlers of Catan come out to play on Tuesdays and Thursdays (for free no less!). This store is easily the best gaming option in the City, and the only thing keeping it from being unquestionably the best in the Bay is that it isn't big enough to host the largest of events. That said, the combination of price, staff, accessibility, and community easily put this store right at the top of every gamer's list. My time spent here would have been great if the staff was attentive on the singles system. It seems that each time the singles were asked the customer service would seem to complain that the singles would be too much and the customers would be disrespected with other tasks that are far more important. Versus games is my favorite place to play Magic. I used to have random work schedules with weird days off, but i could always count on being able to play in an event any day of the week here. They have drafts firing every day! They also have chaos drafts and flashback drafts of old sets. The place is always a welcoming environment because everyone there is friendly and helpful. All of the staff are all knowledgeable, friendly and professional. When i first walked into the store a few years ago the owner, D, greated me with a smile and introduced me to everyone playing at the store. I really appreciated it because it made me comfortable with all these new people. A week later I walked into the store and D remembered my name. A store built on the time tested strategy card game, Magic: The Gathering. I had a hankering for some of my first Magic playing since I abandoned the game in my mid-teens. I was working nearby, and to my surprise, discovered that the store I had written off as a video game store was in fact a store for table top games! D gave me a great introduction to all of the formats, and I played sealed draft for my first time. Since then, I've been coming every week to play in the Magic League. I look forward to the time I get to spend here with a range of players. It's a great way to unwind after a day of work. Friendly people. Great service. Excellent place to go to play your games of magic and table top games. I would come here again and again for sure once they have a good scene going on. They are just getting started at this time and there aint a whole lot. But once it's all off the ground, more people are bound to come for events and to play tons of games. This is a premier game store at this time within the city of SF. There used to be one on 9th Avenue until it closed down in 2001. But with Versus Games, I hope this is a new beginning for all of us table top gamers in this city. It's clean, in a safe neighborhood, with reasonable prices for games and accessories to go with them. No more needing to travel long distances to do the same thing when I could now get to where I want to go and play the same games within a streetcar's distance. Versus Games has the best deals on cards and board games. They have the best Magic the Gathering cards and Pokémon and accessories. Oh, and don't forget the board games. When I went to Versus Games there were so many different board games I was standing there for approximately 30 minutes! I also go to every pre release. Me and my friends have a blast at Versus Games after our parents drop us of before the pre release. When I go and buy Magic packs with my friends we always pull sick cards like Tarmogoyf, Karakas, Wasteland, Inventions, and Invocations. I can't comment on MTG because I don't play, but that is definitely the focus of this store. They only sell board games from Monday to Thursday. If you go in on the weekend expecting to browse or even buy a specific board game, don't expect much. The employee working there when my friends and I went made it very clear customers who wanted to buy board games were not welcome. When we asked about a specific game (Dead of Winter, in case you were wondering), we were told they had a copy, but he would not sell it to us or even tell us the price. I gave them three stars because its clear they care very much for their MTG players and merchandise, but if you're looking for board games, go elsewhere. read more

I write this review as a board game player, rather than a Magic: The Gathering player which seems to be what this shop is mainly about. At first I was excited to have a new source of board games in the Sunset, but I've been consistently disappointed with the service from D and his employees. Choosing to buy board games from the local store instead of getting them cheaper online is only worth it if the store is willing to talk to you about the games. This store is so deeply rooted in trading card culture that it is nigh impossible to get any help when it comes to board games. And don't even try if there's a magic release. It's pretty normal to have store employees talk to customers for long periods about trading cards, then get annoyed when you ask a question about a game. I prefer to take my business to outfits that seem to want it. read more

A friend recommended this store to me when they were having a massive sale, and I am SO glad that I checked my phone and decided to go regardless of having just came from a baby shower. Easily one of the best decisions I have made in my life. I've gone to a couple of other places that sell board games and the like around the bay area, and many of them made me feel like I had to prove myself to be in there since I'm a girl. Versus Games was NOT one of those places. They are fantastic. It reminded me of the comic shop I used to frequent before they switched owners. The guy who runs the place is very knowledgable, and even gave us demos of some of the games we were thinking of purchasing. You can tell this guy knows this stuff, as it's clear that he has played a majority of the games, and he's friendly and willing to go the extra mile. Even when the shop got busy, he was really good about apologizing even though it was no big deal at all - the boyfriend and I were very taken with the store itself. He even showed us a new game that was really similar to Dominion, and he let us pre-order it as well. There was one game he didn't have, but he said most of the time they can get games within 2 days, and he lets you know if a game has been out of stock or hard to obtain. That is some excellent customer service. The shop looks like it's mainly geared toward MTG. It's got a bunch of long tables and it looks like a great place to hang out. The owner informed us that they have game nights pretty much every week. SCORE! They will demo new games on certain days, and I can't think of a better way to get to know your neighborhood than to have game nights with awesome games, people, and food (the place is right across from Kingdom of Dumpling).
