So had finished biking around the city on probably one of the hottest days possible (or what felt like it at least) and had done a solid 4 or 5 miles of bike riding. Before popping into the hotel I was hoping to get my carb overload done right and re-energize from the depleted energy tanks. After a quick search, I found this place and walked over to it and loved it more when I realized it had a low key atmosphere starting from the walk down into the main dining hall. This place is simple, fast, and straightforward with its menu offerings as they offers pastas, pizzas, etc along with a selection of beers/ciders while offering a hipster vibe After perusing, ordered the linguine with meatballs and the parpadelle with ragu. Ordered a few beers as well which were tasty. This place does get busy during lunch time with what seems to be office workers in the CBD and it brought the atmosphere to be lively. The pastas were out in a flash and they do not skimp on portions or protein here. I feel most places in the states only offers 3 meatballs but they went all out and doubled it and the parpadelle was no joke as well. The food here was solid and while the tomato base was a bit strong, the food itself was delish. The pasta was cooked well and basically both plates were completely gone by the end of the meal. Great little pizza and past place tucked into the basement of a busy street in Brisbane cbd. Took my kids here for a pizza and pasta pig out. The restaurant is not that hard to find just follow the signs from the streets entrance and it's easy. We all needed a hearty meal and what better that pizza and pasta . The meals were a good size and quick to come out. We started with a cheesy garlic bread and a bacon and chorizo pizza to start the ball rolling. They were both good. Next was some pasta. I got fettuccine with amatriciana sauce as I love a good tomato based sauce with a bit of salami and chilli in it to spirit up a little. The pasta was cooke lovely and the sauce was good and satisfied all my cravings. The others had pizza and carbonara. All washed down with a nice bottle of red and it was a very good hearty meal with loads of flavor. read more

Verve has been one of my favorite [underground, literally] restaurants since landing in Brisbane. Their food is probably the most flavorful I've had in Brissy so far, and every item I've had has been great! On top of that, the service is usually quick and the food arrives promptly, and they can also accomodate quite a number of people. Even though this underground restaurant|bar is rather dark, I quite like the brick walls and low-key atmosphere. My favorite dish-after trying several-is still the Pancetta Risotto. I was, and still am really impressed with the mix of herbs that come together to make one of the best risottos I've ever had. The herbs, pancetta, and cheese worked so well together, making each bite a "burst of flavor" - which was the only way I could describe it the first time I ordered it. I've since had the Pork Belly Linguini, and the Pumpkin Gnocci, and I've also tried the Meat Balls and Linguini (which is possibly the best marinara I've tried), but the Pancetta Risotto is still the best! The Pork Belly Linguini is not bad, but the sauce and even the pork belly wasn't as flavorful, and for me, a little too oily overall. I've heard their pizzas are also pretty good! Most of their dishes hover around $20, which isn't the cheapest thing around, but it's definitely is worth a try! read more

I was cruising around Brisbane in my Lamborghini Countach when it unexpectedly broke down. Whilst I was waiting for RACQ, I spotted this cute cider house called Verve. I decided a spot of cider was in order and wandered on in, oblivious, of course, to the fact that there was a huge chocolate stain on my blouse. My little demon of a granddaughter spilled her chocolate ice cream all over my Countach, and some of it got onto my pants. An embarrassing situation was averted as the staff at Verve were very welcoming and understanding, although there was a little confusion at first when they assumed it was a poo stain. But after some quick clarification and a taste test on my part the confusion was quickly cleared up. Winner! I can't believe that I haven't tried out this restaurant and so glad I did. Thanks to all my Yelper friends who already wrote fabulous reviews. They just started having cider on tap so we tasted the Westons Stowford Press! It's imported from Herefordshire in England and is an apple cider that is crisp and perfect for this hot Brisbane summer. We started off with the trio dip platter. The definite favorite was the pesto dip and we weren't too sure about the other two. For my main, I ordered the pork belly linguini! YUMMY! The serving portions are gigantic but I couldn't let it go to waste. I loved the flavor of the pork belly. So delicious! I don't often order pasta when out but this would be my exception. The food came out hot which I LOVE. My friend had the eggplant and olive risotto and enjoyed it as well. Service was great and you just pay at the front counter on your way out. The owner, Shane is a vibrant presence in the restaurant, he whips around the dining room making jokes, taking orders, seamlessly clearing tables and generally being charming, he knows his menu inside out and adds a rad buzz to this place whenever he's there. Verve is an underground hub- *literally, of hearty italian staples, like pasta and risotto, generous, flavourful servings and modest prices, keep me coming back time and time again. I love Verve's all day kitchen, there's no 'sorry kitchen closed' when you walk in here at 2.30pm. This places kicks into party mode on Friday night often with a DJ, Verve is a fun place for a cocktail, but you might want to book on a Wed/Thur if you're looking for a more intimate dinner. The blue cheese risotto is my favourite menu item, along with their amazing herb bread. We love cider so naturally Verve has been a local favourite for us for quite some time. Somewhat hidden down in the basement of the Metro Arts building this place has that darkened "underground" almost Berlin-esque (it's probably the red walls) feel to it that once you enter makes you kind of forget that you're in the middle of the CBD. Cloistered away from the hustle of street level Verve is a great place for coffee catch-ups, dinner dates, after work drinks or general cider-swigging merriment. They have a very drinkable and tasty Westons cider on tap along with a selection of 60+ ciders to satisfy the most avid cider fan. The place is run by awesome guys who are always friendly and most than willing to chat cider with anyone who is so inclined - tried one of the BEST EVER cider's I have ever tasted at their behest - Black Dragon from Wales, you must try it people seriously. Verve is a awesomely laid back venue that offers a wide selection of drink (there is also wine and beer - I just love the cider) and a modern Italian menu that comes out in large portions for very reasonable prices. Just had lunch at Verve, and after not being here for a few years, my opinion has not changed at all, they still are amazing. Waitstaff were friendly and attentive. Food was cooked to perfection, my Calamari salad was not only brimming with calamari, it also was full of flavour! Think juicy sun-dried tomatoes, parmesan cheese, fresh rocket and baby spinach, with a lovely aioli dressing. My partner in food crime today had 'the best pizza' she's ever had, with the chicken pizza with marinated fetta, roast capsicum, caramelised onion, thyme and parmesan. We both indulged in Hillbilly Ciders which are crisp flavoured and not too dry not too sweet. And did we have to wait long? Nope not at all. This place gets 5 stars from me for consistancy, service, flavour and for supporting local artists as a bonus (seriously go check out the art, which is all for sale). I will always have such a fuzzy place in my heart for Verve! It was the very first restaurant I went to with friends at 18 that I ordered a glass of wine with dinner. Such fond memories! The best part about Verve is that you can go there no matter what mood you're in and no matter who you're with. It's perfect for after work drinks, a weeknight dinner with friends, and even a not-so-quiet Friday night date. There are group tables for larger parties and smaller tables around secluded corners for a little cheeky privacy. I just love Verve because it has so much to offer! It has an underground vibe (probably because it's down a flight of stairs just off Edward Street) and a really funky, modern atmosphere. I recently went to Verve for a Christmas party and was reminded of why I really like this vibrant inner-city eatery. Perhaps a few soft wall hangings among the art pieces could help with this... The food is modern Italian in flavour with pizza, pasta and risotto plus a couple of fish and steak options on the menu. I had the chicken Caesar salad which was very good. If I had to make a criticism, the poached egg could have been a little less cooked. A friend allowed me a bit of their snapper and sand crab risotto which was fresh and delicious! Verve is more than just a restaurant, in keeping with its location beneath the Metro Arts Centre they have a strong arts offering. They regularly exhibit pieces by local artists (most are available for sale) and also feature live music nights. When the sun goes down you can really get intimate with their formidable collection of ciders. Boasting 40+ different varieties, they can pretty safely boast the 'biggest in Brisbane' tag. Oh my god - how did Verve snag its amazing chef??? And who would have guessed that the world's best risotto was in Brisbane of all places?? The sand crab & snapper risotto I had here ($22) was the BEST risotto I have ever tasted in my life - creamy, deliciously seasoned and herbed, with a few fresh veggies thrown in for good measure. It is simply amazing!! *If you like a little sour tang, it comes with a bit of lemon juice - but if you prefer creamy flavors, you might ask them to hold off on the lemon so you can enjoy the warm cheesy goodness on its own. I figured there was no topping the risotto, but their sticky date bread pudding is also just incredible. It comes with ice-cream, but honestly it was the flavors of the bread pudding itself and the amazing, lightly caramel and slightly butterscotch sauce that just blew my mind. Enjoy! read more

Hidden away but the perfect spot. This place can get noisy but it is all part of the experience in my opinion. Down the staircase below the Metro Arts Building is a hidden Brisbane secret, that is apparently not so secret to everyone but me! It's dark and grungy, the constantly rotating art is hip and cool. The service is fast making it the perfect option for a Friday lunch away from the office when you don't want to eat something from a food court. The goats cheese gnocchi with pumpkin is a personal favourite of mine. The dishes are always fresh and piping hot. Spot on. Verve does some gooood Italian. The food is generally well priced for what is delivered in front of you (except for the pizzas) and you can get some weird and wonderful ciders. The absolute best part of Verve is the atmosphere. It's underground and dimly lit, and there are plenty of other people around you all the time. It feels like a rare gem in the heart of Brisbane, even though it's hardly a well-kept secret. However, don't expect to saunter in off the street sans booking on most nights. Verve is extremely popular and sometimes I book two nights in advance for a Friday or Saturday night. With that being said, on those nights there it is extremely loud being underground and full to the brim with tables. I think it's fine, but just know what you're going in for. I have to give credit to a place that is unabashedly unique, and Verve is one of those places. The "décor" is a little off. The fit and finish, even if you're going for cellar/exposed brick/chic is definitely not an emphasis. The server started sassing us the minute we sat down, and thought the one IPA they had on tap tasted like %^$. Perfect. When a non-IPA drinker hates a beer that much, I'm guessing I'd love it - and I did. And then there was the food. We had the whole gamut. Fire pizza that we asked for Texas-level hot, and got it. Spicy chorizo gnocchi. Blue Cheese risotto. Brisket braised in beer. Pescatore linguini. And it was all fantastic. I was lucky enough to split the gnocchi and risotto, and they played perfect off of each other - I'd recommend plating a red/white half and half dish, but I don't think Verve takes recommendations. I think they make great food and would continue to do so regardless of what I or anyone else thought. The gratis aperitif of cider at the end was a wonderful finish to our meal. Service, while done with attitude (which we appreciated), was fast and efficient. Food was served quickly and hot. Cellar atmosphere was cool, just don't expect linen and silver and you're golden. Verve is one of those places that I tend to forget about when considering city dining options and then every time I go there I ask myself why it took me so long to return! The food is truly amazing. I managed to stray from my usual order of Cajun Prawn Fettuccine and opted to try the Scallop Linguine on my last visit and was not disappointed - it too was truly delicious. I urge you to check out this gem of the Brisbane dining scene and make sure you go hungry - their serving sizes are generous and your meal will be so tasty that you're going to want to be able to finish it! Wandering down the staircase from street level to Verve transforms the bustling modem city scape into what feels like a hidden underground club. The low light levels, exposed pipes and brickwork gives an element of industrial grunge yet still feeling comfortable and cosy. Immediately I was approached and seated by the friendly, humorous and slightly overexcited staff. Seating is an arrangement of tables with orange plastic chairs which further add to the vibe. Closer to the bar are some high tables with stools. The menu is a range of the usual pan-Italian inspired breads, pizzas, pastas, risottos and salads with a few creative twists. Standouts include the goats cheese and chicken gnocchi, brandy tortellini and chilli vodka and artichoke risotto. On this visit I ordered the pork belly linguini with a herb bread to start. And then there was the drinks menu. The cider house part of Verve's name is no lie with an impressive list of over 50 ciders, sorted from very sweet to very dry. I asked the staff for some advice in choosing and ended up with a bottle of Barlow Cloudy from NSW, matched with the pork belly pasta. Although slightly busy, the food came out quickly. The herb bread was a great start with a generous amount of melted cheese on top. I had not had pork belly in a pasta dish before and was interested to see the lack of the crispy skin allowing the taster to fully enjoy the texture and flavours of the pork. Combined with roasted garlic, mushrooms, spinach, mint and just the right about of chilli, this was a very flavoursome dish, and at a reasonable price. $2.80 for a small coffee. Welcome back, 1999. The Verve Café is a bit of a misnomer, as it's really a bench, an espresso machine and a fridge. It's also a great example of what you can do in a minimum of space. It serves the arts crowd of the building it resides in (Metro Arts) and, joyfully, also remembers to adage of the 'starving artist' so beverages and food are gleefully inexpensive. The cappuccino I sipped on while I people watched was frothy, warm, and smooth. Can't real ask much more than that. read more

Verve cafe is a popular option for team lunches for staff in my Department. We have quite a range of dietary needs (and wants) and this place can generally cater to most of them. There's a great range of vegetarian dishes and potion sizes are fair, plus pizzas can be made on gluten free bases. My favourite dishes include the pork belly linguine (which started as a special and became to popular it was added to the standard menu), the eggplant pizza and the vodka risotto. Having been a while since I last went I cannot give in-depth reviews of each dish, although I recall most sit under the $25 mark. Verve also boasts a rather impressive cider menu, covering sweet, dry and Perry (pear ciders) plus Rekorderlig. Ciders are competitively priced, leaning towards costly, but not enough to stop you from ordering one. The only downsides are that it's poorly lit, which is a great vibe for romantic dates but not the best for big group meals. Also the acoustics are a bit screwy, being in a cement and brick basement. It's hard for me to hear someone even across the table. Despite these two minor drawbacks, I would happily return to this place should it be suggested. read more

Being a semi-regular theatre-goer, I'm drawn to Verve every time I head to catch a show at Metro Arts next door. There's something about descending those stairs that feels like diving into a darkened den of delight. I've dined at Verve in a party of two and in a party of twenty-two. The service is quick and cheeky (I love being served by humans and not robots) and everything is delicious (mark my words, save room for the dessert brownie). Bookings are accepted, nay essential for bigger groups - particularly on said performance nights, as I'm not the only one with Verve in my sights for a pre-show meal. The further forward (under the stairs, towards the street) I'm sitting, the happier I am. As others have mentioned, the fridge is full of a range of ciders you'd be pushed to find elsewhere in Brisbane. Because they have so many to choose from, they also don't tend to have a lot of each brand and/or flavour - my friends have been known to drink Verve out of their stocks of whichever brand takes our fancy on any particular night. read more

I feel like my review of the food won't be very helpful because I am not an adventurous person, so despite having been to Verve many times, I only have ever eaten the blue cheese risotto. It's that one meal, where you think, hmm, maybe this time I should branch out, try something different? But you know that you'll only be thinking the entire time of the blue cheese risotto you COULD be eating instead. Funky Italian restaurant in Brisbane CBD, you would almost think you were in Melbourne with the atmosphere downstairs! We went to Verve a few years ago, and on a last minute whim tonight we decided to go back again as we have always been fans. We certainly weren't disappointed. We ordered the chorizo gnocchi and the pork belly linguine, both were delish. The gnocchi was the better out of two options we chose. Prices weren't bad at $22 per dish, however my only suggestion to verve would be to jump on a specials bandwagon night like a lot of other popular and funky tapas/restaurant places around Brisbane do now. It seems to be the only way to drag Brisbane people out on a week/school night! I must say though their happy hour deals looked excellent value at $5 basics, $4 house wine per glass or only $14 a bottle between 4p-6p. Just like all the other reviews mention, it is very noisy downstairs but I must say it does create that great atmosphere. Not the sort of place for a quiet meal. My partner and I recently discovered Verve a few months ago, and have since gone there for lunch every few weeks or so. I am a big, big fan of potato gnocchi, and I find a good gnocchi at a decent price hard to come by. I always find it to be chewy and slimy, with an out-of-the-packet taste, and as much as the name excites me on any menu, most times I decide not to order it to avoid disappointment. However, I decided to try the Spicy Chorizo Gnocchi on Verve's menu. To my surprise, I was quite pleased. The meal was decently priced, and the gnocchi (although not five-star, melt-in-your-mouth soft pillows) was rather enjoyable. I have since ordered it every single time. read more

Did not disappoint, the pasta is still fantastic, service decent, and their cider and beer list is huge! I wasn't a fan of the very very dim lighting though, although I'm sure it's done that way to create the atmosphere. It's also quite noisy, but I suppose that's to be expected for a small underground restaurant. I'm sure not everyone minds the lighting and noise though, so if you can overlook this, it's a fantastic place to dine. And, as many Yelpers have mentioned, the pork belly linguini is amazing! If people want a cheap, decently priced meal in the CBD I always suggest Verve Cafe. I've had multiple dates, group dinners and even my own birthday dinner here before. Good for all occasions - if you pick the right day. The food here is generous and there's nothing fancy. It's simple and hearty. It's casual dining all for about $20. There's quite a few options for vegetarians and they're very accommodating for those you are gluten intolerant. Stick with the pastas and risottos over the pizzas which are pretty mediocre. Always get a cider. The harder-to-find labels often are out of stock though. The service is usually pretty attentive but on busier nights (or if you're seated around the back) can be hit-and-miss. The only time I don't recommend this place is a Friday or Saturday night. The crowds' noise here is amplified underground. Maybe if you ask for a table at the back of the restaurant or even a booth. I doubt it would make that much difference. Always book. Always. Even mid-week it can get really busy. I recently went on a Tuesday night and was told there were no seats until 8.30pm. 'Verve' claim to have the biggest cider range in Brisbane and I believe them! I have not found any other bar that sells 'Scrumpy' cider or my favourite- Kopparberg's Elderflower and Lime cider. I came here with a couple of friends and we seemed to have made the Bartender's day! He was so glad to see a group of 20-something individuals be so interested to listen to him talk about cider. This bartender knew so much about ciders it was incredible! He would ask us questions about our taste (whether we preferred sweet or dry, apple or pear) and would then recommend what he thought we would like and god it right for all of us. Whenever people ask me where to get cider in Brisbane, I tell them to look no further than 'Verve'. Do me a favour and head there now and order an 'Elderflower and Lime' cider. read more

Verve is a haven in the city. Situated in the basement of the heritage-listed Metro Arts building on George Street, it's a charming little secret hidden at the bottom of a crooked flight of stairs. Perfect for a relaxed lunch with your workmates, or a quick meal before catching a show in the theatre upstairs; and the intimate tables for two tucked into the nooks in the corners of the room make for a romantic dinner. The pastas and pizzas have always been spot on when I've dined there, but my gastronomic highlight is undoubtedly their Blue Cheese Risotto. A recent addition is the extensive variety of ciders on offer. Cider may be the new black, but I'm not complaining. If you're a cider lover like me, or want to know what the hype is all about, then Verve is worth visiting. I've been told they're starting up "Cider Flights" soon, which is an easy way to taste test a selection of different ciders from around the globe. I love the location, The service is good yet nothing exceptional and occasionally the food is excellent but unfortunately in my experience this Italian restaurant has fallen short recently. I may have just been unlucky, and admittedly the last three times I have been fell on the busiest nights of the week, but I left saying to myself 'I've had better'. If you go when its busy and you are seated towards the back expect to talk with your hands as conversations are often inaudible unless you are yelling across the table. Although I have been here enough to know that when they get it right THEY GET IT RIGHT, the cream based pastas I have had were fantastic and the pizzas better than average so I will continue to come - but I will do myself a favor and come when its quiet. read more

I get bored with the general 'high end pub' atmosphere of a lot of the eateries down this end of town, so last time I was having lunch with the girls from the office I insisted on heading to Verve. As soon as we sat down the waiter came over, much charming banter ensued and I was really impressed with how he listened to us and made dish recommendations based on what we said we felt like. He then sent over a free garlic pizza so I guess he liked us too! They also serve booze (yay!) so next time you're the one picking the office Friday long lunch try out Verve. read more

Was decent Italian in a basement cave kinda place. Enthusiastic servers and vibrant feel. Food was average but good. I had the little pizza crust triangles with dips and the house olives that would be fantastic in a dirty martini. Also had the linguini and meatballs which was OK. Overall average place but no complaints. read more

The blue cheese risotto, gnocchi and lasagne are my go to meals here. This is the perfect place between 'burger joint' and restaurant; great for dinner with friends, family, your mum and dad or a first date... Heaps and heaps of ciders available (I think they boast it's the biggest in Brisbane) and the staff are always happy to guide you in selecting a beverage based on your taste. Very cool space in basement. Very rustic feel with exposed brick walls, low ceilings, and small bar. Wide variety of ciders available if that's your thing. The pasta and risotto are best, avoid the pizza which was very mediocre, the crust was its downfall as it was flavorless and a bit chewy. I prefer crispy crust. The ambiance(can get a bit loud with the low ceilings) cider, and gnocchi will keep me coming back. Ps. Also avoid the calamari entre (bleh) read more
