It was an added bonus that this was a female owned and run company (of which alas they are still way too few nowadays). Their patient care is excellent and as far as any dental work is concerned, I would highly recommend them. However, as their business grew and expanded, I was starting to worry about what this would mean for their patients. My worries did eventually come true: from a patient based practice, it turned more into a corporate business, and with it, the desire/need for higher profits. As a result, they decided to no longer accept our insurance (Guardian dental, a major dental insurance company) because, according to them, their low fee schedule did not allow them to provide the best care for their patients. Now, that latter is just rethoric, for they were doing an excellent job. Why would that need to stop? No, it was because Guardians fee schedule did not make them enough profit. The way it works is as follows: a dental practice can determine its own fees for various procedures. An insurance company, through collective bargaining, can then negotiate for a reduced schedule for their clients (depending on the local competition). So, accepting an insurance first and foremost means to agree to the collectively bargained fees. While getting less profit, it means a much larger potential client base. This is the power of collective bargaining (which would be so much more effective if health care in the US would be universal, like it is in many other countries and, as a result, also much affordable). For Lumia, however, loyalty to their patients was not deemed as important as getting more profit (perhaps because of the increased costs of having expanded the business) and so they dropped Guardian as one of the accepted insurances. To give one example: our insurance pays the full fee for a cleaning every 4 months. However, they now raised their fee for a cleaning, making us having to pay more than $100 for something that was previously free. And you can guess that with more involved procedures, the out-of-pocket costs gets up even higher. That is why we had to leave Lumia as clients---essentially being pushed out as not being affluent enough clients that do not mind paying much more than they used to---and we now found an equally competent dental clinic in the neighborhood which does accept our insurance. I can only assume that we will not be the only patients leaving the practice, and in the long run, this might seriously damage Lumia (unless they can find enough wealthy clients in the downtown area).

He would not revisit this tooth because "it's dead" and said it was the tooth in front cause the pain, which was not accurate. A second opinion confirmed it was the root canal tooth. There was root still remaining, an ill fitting crown causing poor bite, and too large post caused terrible pain. An endo and new dentist took months to be able to save my tooth from extraction and manage my pain. I normally don't share feedback but felt I needed to be honest here as the work performed was not quality, rushed and often felt my concerns were not taken seriously. On top of that, having to pay again OOP for a $1000+ procedure months later.

By that I mean, one that didn't look at the price tag of my teeth like a gold mind or basically made me feel uncomfortable and unprofessional. Dr. J. doesn't look at your teeth like she's going to use the money to buy a new house. It's more important to her that the patient is happy and takes her time to make sure everything is perfect. All the work was done seamlessly and painlessly. I had been going to this dentistry for the entirety of my teenage and adult years, moved out of state two years ago but hadn't decided on a new dentist yet so when visiting family almost a year ago, early spring time 2025 I booked back to back days, one for cleaning + X-rays the next for any cavities that may need to be handled. I came in first day for cleaning got that all done. Found cavities okay cool come in the next day to get them filled. Nope they tell me that day was booked for me for a second cleaning or something? Tell me to come back in a week or two which is obviously not easily possible as I live a 5 hour plane flight away now. I book a trip for a few months later in June and booked for all 3 cavities to be done with them. I come in and this time I'm seen by the woman doctor, can't remember her name. Too annoyed to look it up now. She tells me she doesn't have time for all three which is kinda insane because I booked for this you know months ago. She tells me she'll do 2 and I can come back in a few days for the other one. I tell her no girlboss I'm getting on a plane tomorrow morning and you guys were supposed to do this months ago. She begins the cavities, drills down, literally leaves the room for 30-45+ mins and I'm just there with my mouth open for a long time. She seems extremely distracted and rushed. She "finishes" the cavities and I'm sent out. Essentially because she was rushing so much she did not properly scoop out the entire cavity and covered it so it continued to rot and infect downwards to my nerves. My mouth hurts so much. It doesn't stop hurting. I call two weeks later asking why one specific tooth hurts so bad and they just tell me my gums are irritated and I'll be fine. I've broken bones, had surgeries, dealt with pain before but this was different. This was debilitating to the point of not being able to move or speak. Soon after I go on vacation to some islands. Snorkeling, going on planes frequently, my tooth is in insane pain I can't even open my mouth to breathe the air hurts my tooth. Imagine spending thousands for a nice vacation and not even being able to eat ice cream and waking up every single day in terrible pain. I return home and immediately see a dentist in the town I now live in and they do X-rays, tell me I need a root canal. This is in August 2025 at this point. I get it done, flash forward to late February 2026 and I still cannot eat on the right side of my mouth. The tooth will not calm down and I'm told there's likely small fractures in the tooth that can't be picked up on X-ray and I have to go to a specialist and probably need it removed and an implant now. So if you truly care about your health and want your teeth to stay in your skull and not wastes thousands of dollars, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE.

I eventually paid the piper for that one, and since that time, I've realized that the key to me not avoiding the dentist and taking care of my teeth the way I know I should is finding a person that intuitively adheres to trauma-informed principles of care: respects/believes patients, explains what they're going to do and when, communicates safety clearly, etc. I had a great dentist in NYC and then COVID happened and then we moved to NJ and yeah, I've been delaying finding a new dentist for, um, mumblesfouryearscough. I knew it was time to establish care here and I knew a whole boatload of 5 star Yelp reviews wouldn't lie. First off, my intake paperwork asked me what I was looking for / what was most important to me in a dentist. Then it asked if there was any accommodation I might need to feel more comfortable. Then it asked my anxiety level on a scale of 1-10. No one has ever asked me this before. On the day of my visit, having given this much thought, I decided to let my freak flag fly and asked my hygienist if I could just keep the xray apron on for my whole cleaning. If she batted an eyelash, I didn't notice, and me and my weighted blanket snuggled in for an excellent polish. Well, it turns out I had a cavity. Made an appointment to go back to have it filled. Considered asking for an Rx for a single valium, but decided against it. I was brought into a room that seemed to date to a revolutionary war time period visually, but with modern technology. THE CHAIR MASSAGED ME. Dr. Kim explained what he was going to do, showing me my xray once more, numbed me up, removed my old filling and fixed up my cavity in like, 6 minutes. I don't know if it was the ambiance of the room, the chair massage, Dr. Kim's evident competence, or the acoustic Bruno Mars song playing, but I did not feel I had been locked out of heaven. To the contrary, this was an excellent experience. If you are afraid of the dentist, this is the place for you.

Of course, she complained to the staff. That was the only time I had an issue there. I admire and do like & trust Dr Fusco, and definitely feel I'm in good hands, as far as, my oral heath is concerned, and I'm very finicky about what dentist I want working in my mouth, and on the teeth I have left. My only complaint is I wish he would spend a little more time with me and let the patient talk/explain before he lets the hygienist gag me and goes to work. I do feel a bit rushed, in all honesty. Maybe I wouldn't have a first failed, or reinfected root canal had I been able to elaborate more about the the ongoing sensations I was feeling on this tooth not long after the initial root canal? Now, as luck would have it, there is pain that I'm feeling on what I thought was an successful initial root canal a few years ago, or so. Apparently, the tooth or canal has become reinfected and I can't afford to loose the tooth, nor hopefully, even the crown that was put on after the initial root canal, not that long ago. I'm hoping Dr Fusco himself can do a root canal retreatment so he doesn't have to farm me out, unless it will require an endodontist to do the surgical and/or more complex procedure to remove the infection/abscess and save the tooth. I can't afford to lose ANY more teeth. My last resort is to extract and lose the tooth. I lost enough molars since I was kid from being afraid of the dentist & the novacaine injection, at least, when I was younger. Hopefully, this reinfected tooth can be addressed by retreatment or apicoectomy, if even necessary, as the tooth canal has now definitely become infected or reinfected but this slowly happened over time and I began noticing a numbness & tingling in this tooth not long after the initial procedure? Now, it's just pain and discomfort as I'm writing this, especially, if I press/bite on tooth or push on the gums way above the tooth. I will be seen soon. Hopefully, this problem that slowly surfaced with this tooth, is rectified and resolved. ‍

When scheduling, I made it very clear that I would need nitrous due to dental anxiety. After arriving, I waited over an hour past my appointment time, only to finally be told by the receptionist--without any empathy--that I couldn't have nitrous because they had "used the last of the oxygen." This is not a small oversight. For patients with anxiety, this kind of preparation and communication is essential. To wait that long, after traveling and arranging childcare for a newborn, only to be dismissed so casually is incredibly frustrating and unprofessional. If you experience dental anxiety and rely on accommodations like nitrous, I strongly recommend looking elsewhere. This office does not seem equipped to handle those needs with the care or consideration they require.

The office is very clean and everyone is super friendly. What impressed me the most was the actual work performed, the dentist working on me was very diligent, careful and in the end did a fantastic job. I never had my teeth cleaned so well, with other dentist it was in and out but not here. The cleaning and check up last close to 45 minutes and it was a pleasure sitting in that chair. This is my new dentist :)
