Then they refused to treat my dog, who desparately needed a growth removed from her chest. She was constantly pawing it and it was bleeding profusely. They said she is too old, and might not survive the surgery. Dr. Thomas said their corporate culture would not allow surgery unless they were certain she would survive. (Glad that's not a rule for humans.) I think they are afraid of liability. I was afraid I might have to put her down if I could not get the surgery. I think they would have put her down, even though they would not operate. I left there practically crying. Fortunately, I had a friend refer me to Kaufman Vet Center in Kaufman. They got me in the next day for surgery. The whole procedure was less than the $325 charged for a needless x-ray at Preston Royal. My dog is doing great. She had no problems with the surgery. The explanation of Preston Royal was that they offer "Gold Standard Care." Apparently that means lots of tests, high costs $$$, and then maybe refuse the treatment sought. That is not the Gold Standard! That is corporate cowardice and greed. My Gold Standard is a doctor who provides a good service at a reasonable price. Thank God for Kaufman Vet Center and Doctor Costello! I will never go anywhere else. I don't mid the drive, and neither does my dog.

Dr. Abigail Sturbaum immediately began the referral and we were already scheduled for an appointment the following week with Dr. James Custis. Dr. Custis is a brilliant Veterinarian. He is detail oriented and clearly explained everything to my Mom and me during our very first appointment with him, informed us about the possible scenarios and outcomes with radiation therapy and chemotherapy, and performed a ct scan to determine which course of treatment to take. The nasal adenocarcinoma, according to the initial ct scan, turned out to be localized and we decided that it was in Donny's best interest to receive SRT for three days. For the next two weeks, he was absolutely fine. He was eating and drinking normally, urinating and having normal bowel movements, was playful, and energetic. He was doing so well with his radiation treatments until he suddenly and unexpectedly declined the morning of Friday, May 1, 2026. He couldn't walk very well. He was not interested in eating. He had IMTP and a ct scan later that afternoon showed little tumors in his abdomen, spleen, and perforations in his colon, an indication that the cancer had metastasized throughout his body. Upon being hospitalized, Dr. Custis, Dr. Roman, and Dr. Celk were all coordinated with one another regarding Donny's condition over the course of the day. Late Friday night, Donny took a turn for the worst and Dr. Celk recommended we get to the hospital and make a decision since it was clear that he was only going to get worse. We had to face the inevitability and that, to us, was the most difficult part of it. He was completely normal one day and rapidly deteriorating the next. We made the extremely difficult decision to end Donny's suffering by giving him one final send off over the Rainbow Bridge late Friday night on May 1st, 2026. The staff at VCA Dallas were compassionate and caring. Dr. Celk was especially kind and empathetic during such a difficult time. She explained everything that was happening as Donny slowly took his last breath. They let us spend as much time as we needed with Donny after his transition. I truly believe that Donny was in the best possible place at the time he needed urgent medical attention and end-of-life care. We are heartbroken, and the grief comes in waves.

From the start, she showed incredible compassion and made sure I understood the entire process clearly. As a first-time dog mom, I was incredibly nervous and bracing for the worst. Prince is like my first baby and I love him deeply. Dr. Janacek took the time to explain everything with so much care, which gave me a sense of peace in a very emotional moment. Prince received an echocardiogram during the visit, and thankfully everything came back normal. I left the appointment feeling informed, supported, and so relieved. Dr. Janacek was not only professional and knowledgeable but also warm and genuinely invested in my dog's wellbeing. I had such a meaningful conversation with her and would absolutely return for any future checkups. The entire office staff was also outstanding. They were patient, understanding, and incredibly kind from check-in to check-out. It is rare to find this level of service and empathy, and I am so thankful for everyone at this clinic.

In those 10 years, I have had many dogs because I try to always rescue seniors and I never know how long I will have them. I knew most of the staff by name. They were kind and so friendly. They have all left. Next, all the vet animals were gone. It used to be that you walked in and you were greeted by the animals that lived at the facility. Most of them had been there longer than I had been a client. Now you walk in and there is no warm and fuzzy feeling. It just feels cold. Then the services stopped being offered. First, they stopped boarding. No notice. Just stopped. Now they don't day board. Again, no notice. One Saturday I called because my Bulldog was in total distress. North Tollway Pet Hospital was the only place I had ever taken him. I rescued him when he was 2 and he is now almost 8. They did not even try to fit him in. Instead, I called a vet that my friend took her animals to. Keep in mind, they had never seen my Bulldog. Not only did they see him, but they stayed past closing time to make sure not only he was comfortable but that I was comfortable also. I remember when Dr. Maxwell would do that also. It is frustrating when you have been a client for so long, but they just stop caring. Again, I love Dr. Maxwell. He is the best.
