We brought our dog here after she was diagnosed with SLO (Symmetrical Lupoid Onychodystrophy), a painful and debilitating condition that we weren't sure how to manage. We really weren't eager to jump between veterinarians trying to figure it all out, especially after already spending so much money addressing her condition. I came across Dr. Kaplan while researching veterinarians with experience treating SLO, and we made the two-hour drive from San Diego to see her. Taking a chance on Dr. Kaplan was absolutely the right decision. Everyone at Veterinary Skin & Ear has been professional, personable, attentive, responsive, and incredibly knowledgeable. Dr. Kaplan was wonderful. She was extremely knowledgeable about this rare condition and even took the opportunity to educate some of her staff while our dog was there. I also really appreciated that they went over the plan of care and costs with us upfront, so there were no financial surprises. While frequent trips to Los Angeles aren't realistic for us long-term, I'm so glad we made the effort to see Dr. Kaplan. She helped us put a treatment plan in place that we can continue with our local veterinarian, which was exactly what we needed. Dr. Kaplan is truly a beacon of light, and the entire staff at Veterinary Skin & Ear has been wonderful. We left feeling informed, supported, and much more hopeful about managing our dog's condition. The first step of the allergy process was to do an elimination diet. The elimination diet using Royal Canine Hydrolyzed Protein has worked wonder for dogs. Both our dogs used to experience frequent ear infections and staining from licking their fur due to allergies. Lastly, one of our dogs had a suspicious bump removed that ended up testing borderline with a high K value. Dr. Boyd recommended a few different oncologists for melanoma immune therapy vaccine, so we chose one where we already had an established relationship with for another speciality. Five Stars Is Not Enough for Dr. Richman and His Team I rarely write reviews, but this one feels important. Our 10-year-old dog, Frank, has suffered from chronic, severe ear and skin infections for over seven years. In the past, multiple veterinarians and even a previous dermatologist told us his only option was radical surgery: removing both ear canals and eardrums and sewing the ears closed--an irreversible procedure that would have left him completely deaf. We could never bring ourselves to do that. Five years ago, we tried a different procedure elsewhere, hoping for improvement. Not only did it fail, but during the process Frank had a terrifying panic attack in a crate, went into heat stroke, and nearly died. For years afterward, his ears never improved, and this past year he had been going downhill so quickly that we thought we were approaching the end of his life. Then we found Dr. Austin Richman at Veterinary Skin and Ear in Santa Monica, and everything changed. From the moment we arrived, the facility, the team, and the level of expertise were on an entirely different level--warm, knowledgeable, detail-oriented, and clearly invested in helping even the most complicated cases. Dr. Richman reviewed Frank's extensive history and was honest: one ear might have only a 30% chance of being saved because the damage was so advanced. But he said he wanted to try. And thank goodness he did. Dr. Richman performed a laser procedure to remove the extensive damaged tissue that had been blocking airflow and trapping infection for years--something no prior veterinarian had ever suggested. He also placed tubes in Frank's ears (common in children yet somehow never mentioned to us before), which has been absolutely transformative. The result: He saved BOTH ears!!! No canal removal. No eardrum removal. No deafness. No extreme surgery. Just thoughtful, skilled, modern medicine. Today, Frank can hear again. He's happier, more energetic, more himself than he has been in years. What an amazing find! This facility is clean, organized, professional, and above all, welcoming and friendly. Dr. Megan Boyd was amazing and clearly had my pup's best interest - as well as cost - at heart. The staff are kind and genuine animal lovers as well. What wasn't so great was after treating my dog & me paying about $1000.00 dollars they have now charged my card for a "no show" and won't reverse it. We had an appointment for a recheck & I called more than 24 hours in advance to cancel it. They were closed & I left a voicemail yet they say they never received it. When I notified them I had been charged they said email a screen shot of the call & it would be settled. I proceeded to do that and still that wasn't good enough! They basically called me a liar and offered me in store credit. Now why would I want to return to a place like this?!? No thanks! Definitely not the way to treat a customer or run a business. The services are expensive for a regular animal you definitely pay for what you get keep that in mind they also provide a bill prior going to pay for the services which l thought was great! Dr. Richman is my go-to doctor when it comes to my dog's allergies, ear issues, and skin problems. He is truly a lifesaver--and I mean that literally. Many years ago, my dog got a foxtail in his ear. I rushed him to the emergency vet, and he had an operation, which ended up being a bust because they were never able to locate the foxtail. The one good thing that came out of it was that they recommended I take my dog to the practice where Dr. Richman previously worked. The first time I brought my dog in for an appointment, Dr. Richman was able to diagnose what was going on. My dog had a rare virus in his ear--likely caused by the foxtail--and needed to start treatment immediately. For almost nine months, my dog was under Dr. Richman's regular care until the virus was cleared. Dr. Richman is thorough, knowledgeable, kind, and helpful. He got my dog (and me!) through that difficult time, and I'm forever grateful. Since then, Dr. Richman has opened his own practice, Veterinary Skin and Ear, and anytime my dog has allergies, ear issues, or skin problems, the first call I make is to him. The most important commitment we made in 2023 was coming here for our dog, Bernie. Our dog had broken out with a skin immune disorder in 2023. Before the skin disorder, he was an energetic spring of joy who was as fast as lightning and nimble as can be. The skin disorder initially showed signs of irritation around his eyes, paw pads, ears, and nose. It eventually led to balding and the lesions began forming in the irritated areas. he even lost his appetite and wasn't eating much. My wife and I were shocked and emotionally leveled by his condition. After going to two general vets, his condition improved in some ways, but he still had serious problems and his weight was still too low. We finally took him to Veterinary Skin & Ear to see Dr. Richman after Bernie formed an open wound that was exposing his bone. Dr. Richman evaluated Bernie and it was clear that his condition was serious and he was uncertain about how his recovery would go but showed us a course to take, and so we took it. After weeks of cleaning and casting Bernie's arm up along with the requisite medications, his elbow wound has completely closed up and healed. Since that healed, Bernie still was not out of the clear and continued on a cycle of medications that brought him back to the cute ball of energy that we had before this whole mess started. And it all worked! Bernie has been on medication for some months now and the amount medication he has taken has slowly been dwindling down with Dr. Richman's expertise guiding the process. We were desperate and have been so fortunate to be in the hands of this center and veterinarian. The staff have been incredible too. I can't recommend them more. Every other week or so we go over the pictures of Bernie in such a fragile state and are reminded of how thankful we were for sticking through with it and being able to find this place! Note: the pictures didn't upload in order, but they show Bernie at the initial stages and later stages of his disorder. This is a mixed review and the reasons why will become obvious. The good news: Efficient, immaculate facility with kind and personable staff. Ample parking. Procedures are conducted competently and professionally, with great attention to detail and follow up. Text reminders, call backs, etc., all conducted courteously and reliably. The not so good news: When the first person you see in the exam room exists solely to transcribe all of the doctor's recommendations to prepare the quote, hold on to your wallet. Speaking as a pharmacist (and yes, I know that's for humans, but there are parallels) the vet prescribed a LOT of medications - all filled in-house and several quite expensive. Fair play to them, my dog had a couple different issues and she needed medications. What I found objectionable, though, was when I mentioned side effects that were VERY impactful to my dog (intense thirst, urinating in her sleep, and then waking up confused and frightened) the staff basically shrugged their shoulders. If a human patient can't tolerate a drug the provider listens and offers other options. With my dog it was just accepted as a given. That's fine IF the drug is essential to her healing, but if she can do without it shouldn't that be an option? Finally, I had an emergency the day of her recheck appointment and when I called 6 hours prior to cancel I was told there was a $100 charge. When I objected they waived it, but that was pretty steep! The final news: I'd take her there again if I had to because they are good at what they do. But I would be more assertive about questioning charges and inflexible recommendations. read more

We have a 12 year old shih-tzu who has major allergies and skin issues, and we were in desperate search for a great dermatologist for our Bosley. Parking was easy to find, and we didn't wait too long to be seen by Bosley's doc. We had our primary vet and Bosley's cardiologist send over his history, and the practice was fully informed by the time we were seen. Highly recommend you do this ahead of time pup parents! We were prescribed a great plan and the doc was very thorough in explaining the plan and addressed all of our questions and concerns. We felt very comfortable with moving forward with the doc's suggestions. It was expensive. There is no doubt - but having pets and providing 100% care is not inexpensive, so we were prepared for the cost. We are happy to report that one week in - Bosley is doing SO great. I haven't seen him this comfortable and his tail wag this much in many months. He is such a happy boy and his skin is finally improving.
