I LOVE THIS PLACE. My Jindo has required 2 fairly extensive surgeries in the last year (TPLOs). We did one at another place and I could NOT be happier that we were guided here for the 2nd one. The difference between the 2 procedures is almost unbelievable. If you are looking for the best place to take your dog for orthopedic surgery, I could not recommend Dr. Hawthorne any more. Not only did she perform my dog's 2nd TPLO, but she also removed the implant from the first one (one the same day) and even with 2 operations, my girl is recovering SO well. The staff at the rehab center are equally amazing. Kirsty and Ashleigh have both worked with Bumblebee post-op, and I am certain they are the reason she continue to make progress. Kirsty won over my nervous dog really quickly and started her on her path to recovery, and recently Ashleigh has gotten her to a point where she's *almost* herself again. The support staff (everyone from the front desk to the techs) are also top notch. We have worked with several now and I've never left feeing like Bee is getting anything less than the absolute best. The front desk staff should get a prize for how well they get to know the dogs walking in and out of the practice, and the tech staff is always gentle and compassionate. So from one (overly involved, borderline crazy) dog mom to anyone else looking for the best for their pet, know that I would give them 10 stars if Yelp would let me. My puppy Beau has received the best care from VSC doctor's and staff. He gets excited when he pulls into the parking lot. That is the first sign (when he is happy I am happy). My dog was diagnosed with an anal sac cancerous tumor. I was lucky to get an appointment with Hope Veterinary Center in Vienna, which works in tandem with VSC. The oncologist was excellent and helped get an appointment quickly with a surgeon at VSC who very kindly fit my pet into his schedule. This meant that the operation happened within a week of the initial discovery of the cancerous tumor, despite the fact that four other pet hospitals were unable to slot me in earlier than two or three weeks from the time I called. Our lab Chaka recently had ACL surgery with Dr. Phelps and I cannot rave enough about our experience with both Dr. Phelps and the Veterinary Surgical Center. Dr. Phelps spent a lot of time with us explaining the procedure and getting to know Chaka. Dr. Phelps was warm, candid in her answers and we immediately felt comfortable with her. The staff was kind, compassionate, patient, and truly cared about the well being of our dog. Everyone was professional and went the extra mile to make sure we were informed pre and post surgery. The office was warm welcoming, everyone was so nice and always greeted us with a big smile. It did not feel like a cold, sterile, hospital office. When we dropped Chaka off we were very uncertain and of course nervous to leave, they made us feel very comfortable and we knew it would be okay since he went right to them wagging his tail. We called every hour to check on him and they were very welcoming of our calls and immediately got back to us with updates. The ACL surgery was a success! I would HIGHLY recommend both Dr. Phelps and VSC for both surgery and rehab. VSC Surgical came up with a diagnosis to a feline lameness in a kitten which had stumped quite a number of other vet offices. The vets took the situation very seriously and got us rushed in. They also took the time to truly understand the history and then communicate the various options as the got more information on the problem. I took my pooch to Veterinary Surgical Center for his ACL surgery after having done much research on the procedures and specialists here. They are great! Very very professional, knowledge, and patient. One of the reasons I chose them was because they perform both traditional ACL surgery, such as LSS, and also TTA, which is much more invasive and suitable for larger dogs. TTA is also about $1500-2000 more. I like having that option, which seems intuitive, but lots of vet surgeons in the area only offer TTA or TPLO. Dr. Nicholson was very professional and helpful in explaining the various procedures as well as risks and complications involved. He provided just the right amount of info to help me make my decision. I definitely recommend him. Here's the cost lowdown. - $95 for initial consultation - $2000 for the traditional ACL surgery. This also includes 3 post surgery checkups. While this place is quite expensive, I was pleasantly surprised that the actual cost was $500 lower than estimated. They told me that they are quite conservative about their estimates unlike other places that may be under to get your biz. VSC is also in the brand new Hope Center building in Vienna. While I was only able to talk with him briefly from my car after he had examined my pup, I appreciate his kind manner and diagnostic skill. My dog's behavior makes sense now and I feel better equipped to handle her needs. My initial impressions of the practice through phone calls with the staff were mixed. We've been coming to VSC of Vienna every week for a couple of months now. First, we saw Dr. Hawthorne for my dog's surgery consult. After a thorough exam and x rays, she decided that he did not need the surgery that we anticipated. She actually found something that our regular vet missed on previous x rays, and recommended that we be aggressive with physical therapy instead. We then began at VSCR (the rehab building) with Dr. Cameron Weber. She is AWESOME. She is so patient with my VERY energetic dog, and she is always so happy to see him. Through her therapy recommendations we have already seen an incredible difference in my dog's level of comfort. The assistants and receptionists are great, too. They're always so positive and embrace his craziness! Although it's an hour drive to and from VSC every week and a bit pricey (as all specialists are), we will continue to make the drive to see Dr. Weber and her team. read more

I have had nothing short of a positive experience with Dr. Von Pfiel as my performance dog's orthopedic consult. He was completely on board with my desire to be as minimally invasive as possible, but was willing to lay out all of my options so that I could make the best, informed decision for her care that I could. He has a background/specialty with performance dogs, and I feel very confident that he has her best interest in mind with the goal to return her to Masters level agility safely and 100% healthy. Equally as pleased with Dr. Cameron Weber, whom has been doing the physical rehab. Part of what I really appreciate about the rehab side of things is that they're more than willing to help give you the tools to do a lot of the rehab yourself, with homework in between. I highly recommend VSC. Our 5 month old lab puppy was diagnosed with fairly significant elbow issues that required surgery on both elbows, including cutting down one of the bones. The surgeon, Dr. Rogatko was very patient with us as she explained our dog's condition and the rationale for her recommendation for surgery as the best chance for our pup's long term well-being. She is very caring as are all of the staff that we interacted with throughout the surgery, follow-ups and re-hab. We have owned boxers our whole life and in the last 2 years, both our puppy, Rizzo, and 6 year old, Sadie suffered tears to their crutia ligaments requiring a surgery called CBLO. Our dog Harley who was only 14 months old was diagnosed with a luxating patella last year in her left hind leg which meant she would frequently dislocate her knee. Being a lab/pointer mix and high energy this quickly became an issue despite not appearing to cause pain when we had to slip the knee back in place. We went to VSC and Dr. Hawthorne and staff quickly diagnosed the condition and immediately recommended surgery. We were not prepared to move so quickly to surgery but Dr. Hawthorne was very reassuring as to the need to get it done. The surgery was a great success and in 8 weeks Harley was back to normal....until her right knee started to show similar signs of degredation due to a luxating patella which is fairly common with Harley's mixed breed. We had her right knee done this June and the results were the same restoring Harley back to her normal energetic self...Dr. Hawthorne is fantastic, with a sincere and warm bedside manner, never pressuring us or giving us the feeling that it wasn't our decision in consultation with her expertise. The entire staff is equally awesome and always friendly. While COVID has changed their operations it has not interrupted their great customer service and obvious love for Harley and their other fuzzy patients. We would be happy to be a "patient story" or customer reference for VSC to answer any questions about the experience, procedure and/or recovery and rehab experience. Dr. Ganjei and his colleagues at VSC and the Hope Center saved Barkley's life. Barkley, my golden retriever, was having trouble breathing, and our vet found he had fluid in his abdomen and around his heart. The vet sent us to the Hope Center and, after they performed various tests to determine the cause of his problem, Dr. Ganjei performed a pericardiectomy using a minimally invasive approach, removing the sac that surrounds his heart. In addition to having first-rate technical skills, Dr. Ganjei is the kindest and most caring surgeon. He called me on Saturday and Sunday mornings after Barkley came home to see how he was feeling. He spent long periods of time on the phone answering all of my questions and concerns and dealing with my tears. He came out to the parking lot to speak with me in person, since this all took place during the COVID-19 stay in place restrictions. He obviously loves his work and even told me he loves my dog. Today, only nine days since his surgery, Barkley is back to wagging his tail and stuffing a large toy hedgehog in his mouth. He is breathing comfortably and weighs twelve pounds less than he did the day of surgery, meaning he no longer has twelve pounds of fluid in his abdomen and around his heart. Once again Dr. Hawthorne was a life saver for my pup! Nearly two years ago she did my dog Henry's tummy surgery. This time around she did my dog Aly's TECA surgery to remove a mass in her ear. After the surgery, Dr. Hawthorne gave me her personal contact information in case I had any questions or concerns about Aly post surgery. When Aly woke up a week after her surgery not acting at all like herself, shaking, and refusing to eat, drink, or move, Dr. Hawthorne responded within 10 minutes of me reaching out to her, and saw her right away that morning. It turns out Aly had a dangerous 104.9 fever. They were able to get her on fluids and antibiotics immediately. Dr. Hawthorne updated me every few hours that day to let me know how Aly was doing and what her temperature was. Because of thier responsiveness and treatment, Aly's fever went down and she was able to go home later that day. I'm so grateful to Dr. Hawthorne and VSC-Vienna for the great care they've taken of both my pups! read more

Our 16 month old adopted Chow Chow, Mila, needed to have Bi Lateral ACL surgery. We did hours, days, weeks of research on the procedure and narrowed down 4 places within the area to speak with on the costs, care, recovery, and our overall expectations. Ultimately it was an easy decision to choose VSC, and have been very pleased with the outcome. As a preliminary matter, I agree or second Carolyn's and Stephanie's posting regarding the extremely high costs. They are correct and accurate, but in the interest of giving a full review, especially for those who love their pets as much as I do and consider them family, here's the rundown: BASIS for REVIEW: one of our cats was injured over a weekend, and ended up fracturing and dis-locating bones. We do not know how this happened, and likely never will. We took the cat to Hope Center (separate review, though also very pricey) -- and eventually she was operated on by VSC surgeons in May of 2014. Total Cost: approximately $9500 (VSC: about $7000 total, Hope Center: about $2500). GOOD: I believe they are generally skilled surgeons there, to the extent that I did not watch them perform the surgery. I don't doubt their skillset. Though we called to find other to perform the surgery, because of its perceived complications, unless we wanted our cat to be in pain for weeks longer, we had to go with VSC. I believe they are also generally communicative and have good bedside manner, from what I experienced as a mom to my beloved cat. Speaking of which, she has recovered well and they were good about answering questions. I am grateful for that, since she is my everything. The 1 star is for this. BAD TRUTH: They are super expensive. They are a BUSINESS. They are a BUSINESS. To a large degree, they are exploiting the fact you are in an emergency situation for profit, profit, profit. It is like getting BMW 7-series of care, though that might be a bad analogy since I am not sure they are worth every penny. They are in it for profit, and they are absolutely taking advantage of the fact there are probably only 2-3 other places in the area one can go to for emergency care, and they are taking advantage of that. Sort of like the business model for Cable television, in a way. Yes, there are a few options (Comcast, Verizion FIOS, Direct TV) but are any of them really price-differentiated? I digress. To me, it was amazing to see them generate their own business and in a sense try to illicit fear and tap into the pet lover's emotions to drive up more costs. They tried to push physical therapy on my cat (really??) when she really did not need it. They urge or insist upon scheduling follow-up x-rays after surgical discharge. I went to one, 3 weeks after I took my cat home -- cost? Over $300! For one set of x-rays. What was amazing about the bill was the extra $70.00 for a "second view'. Really?! How about I want a competent person to have one view. This wasn't a second x-ray, mind you. That was priced out as well. To respond to the VSC manager who stated, in reply to I think Stephanie G's post -- that the estimates they provide might be more the actual charge. HAA! No way. The estimate we got was pretty much what we paid, and more for those follow-up, almost hidden costs. BOTTOM LINE: If you can go somewhere else, like Dr. Griffin, or a teaching hospital (I think UPenn's vet school can do surgeries at reduced costs) or basically avoid VSC altogether, please do. I understand you love your pets, and I do dearly (I did end up going to VSC when my choice was left to just that) -- but if you can avoid it, please do. The front desk staff is also iffy, nice, but not professional in terms of patient care. They did not remember my cat's name and on appointments just put some name that was "close enough" to my cat's name (not bothering to ask or check, since I could hear them say ''what's that cat's name?" amongst each other..., and my discharge instructions (for paying a $6000 surgery, and 1-2 hospital nights (not sure if they were on VSC bill or Hope Center bill) -- the discharge instructions in paper form were a form letter, tailored to ** DOGS ** and most of it irrelevant for CATS. Maybe (sarcastically) if I paid an extra $500, they could have made it tailored to the actual patient being discharged. This is a business. To the extent they care about animals...maybe that is what brought them to vet school, but right now they care deeply or more deeply about your wallet. read more

While Dr Gordon was professional and responsive, the price i was quoted for OCD surgery was an exorbitant.$3,500-$4,000. After expressing dismay about the cost and asking what other options there were for our puppy I was told 'a vet student/resident could perform the surgery for $200 less". Really? Are you kidding me? If your going to charge someone thousands for surgery you might want to do it yourself rather than suggest a student do it for a diff of $200! Our saving grace was Dr. Griffin at Regional Vet Center in Springfield 20 minutes from Vienna. Dr griffin is an amazing vet who not only spent an incredible amount of time examining and xraying to diagnose, but performed the surgery for 40% less than Hope Center! And that included everything even PT. Our puppy had excellent results and is doing great. I was so grateful to have found Dr Griffin. With that large of a difference in cost, I ended up realizing that the surgical rates that the Hope Center charges are unnecessary and akin to price gouging. Good, caring vets but the practice really needs to re-visit their surgical rates.... read more

Referred to VSC after my primary vet at Clocktower and specialist at Hope. All 3 facilities worked seamlessly with each other to give my dog the best care. Had Dr. Hawthorne to remove a mass from my dog's spleen. They could not have been more caring, helpful and understanding when answering all our questions and reviewing options, and fair with pricing. It was expensive, but they gave us a good estimate and worked with us to balance care and cost. I was initially skeptical of doing surgery on a 12 year old dog, but it was the right choice (he's fine) and I'm extremely grateful to Dr. Hawthorne and her team at VSC. read more
