This is the kind of place you go if you're in the know. You'd never suspect a VFW post would be one of the most fun bars you can visit. The new Riverwalk Expansion has opened up a whole new world of business to this place, I'm sure. I had never been until I noticed it while jogging down the river one evening. Music was blaring along the banks and people were out partying. My friend and I decided to cut our run short and go see what was happening - if only all training runs ended like this I bet the world would have TONS more marathon runners. What we found was one of the most fun nights of my life - and yes, I was wearing spandex pants and tennis shoes the entire time. We stayed for about a couple of hours and had a Lone Star or two (beer snobs beware this is the type of place you drink cheap American beer and feel happy about it!) and made some great friends. I learned some new dances and got a secret tour of the inside of the building, which was amazing. You've got to go if you have the chance. Just, um, maybe take a hint from me and wear normal clothes. This place is rad! My BF is a VFW member and we stopped in while out on a bike ride and loved it. It is accessible from the River Walk and you don't have to be a VFW to visit and drink there. This was my first time at a VFW and getting to visit the oldest one in TX was pretty fantastic. The service was friendly, the beer was cold, and other patrons were a lot of fun! You can rent out different portions of the old house for parties and they have live music on Friday and Saturday nights. This is a five-star dive bar. If you're looking for a five-star lounge, restaurant or club, this is not it. But if you want a comfortable, interesting, friendly, relaxed place to have a beer, VFW Post 76 is what you seek. The VFW post is on the river walk's museum reach. It can be accessed by river barge, or if you're driving you will find it two blocks west of 10th and Broadway, just a mile north of downtown. The post is housed within a Victorian home that is 100+ years old. The place reportedly is haunted (but I've noticed since moving to San Antonio that pretty much every place in town is reportedly haunted). The bartender who served us has been there for years and swore she once clearly saw a ghost near the posts' bathrooms. At the VFW Post you can sit outdoors at picnic tables or can find room indoors at the bars or tables. The place has frequent events, and we were told you could bring your own liquor to the outdoor concerts (but not beer or wine since they sell that). VFW Post 76 is the kind of place where you sit on well-worn chairs, strike up conversations with the strangers next to you, and enjoy good, cheap beer. When we visited, we found the patrons and employees equally friendly, and they were happy to share their favorite nearby restaurants. This is a nice place and we'll be back. But be forewarned, if you want a "nice," clean and plush experience, you'll want to go elsewhere. Leave your pretensions at the door, and you'll enjoy VFW Post 76. read more

If you are from San Antonio and haven't been here then turn in your residency card- this places oozes a San Antonio vibe. Even if you don't enjoy the Tejano or Oldies that fill the air on the weekends (I wouldn't like to meet the person who doesn't BTW,) come here after a hearty meal, watch the sun go down along the Riverwalk and enjoy the ambiance. I've exposed family and friends to this gem and have been pleasantly surprised to come upon them later without my presence. In New Orleans I drink Hurricanes, Miami I drink Mojitos, but here at the VFW Post 76 I drink Lone Star. All the beers that they serve here always come ice cold. My advice for a perfect spring weekend: arrive here as the weather cools and sit outside. Invite people to come and watch their faces light up as they recognize the uniqueness and strange familiarity of their surroundings. read more

We love this place!!! Never had a bad experience here. Bartenders are friendly and fast, live music on weekends, love to sit upstairs on the porch and watch people dance and have a good time. I love this Bar - It makes me a jolly good fellow !! And that is a "honto" !! This old Mansion was giving to us by the Petty family of San Antonio and when you see it - you step back in time as if you were on a Georgia Plantation with Rhett Butler !! This is the oldest Veteran of Forign Wars Post in Texas, made up with a lot of the Spanish/American War Rough Rider Vets after the The Big War (WW I). It is OPEN to the Public because of it's historical presense in our great city and it has a ghost to boot "Charlie" !!\So come on down for the buckets of beer (cheapest you will ever find), wine song & ladies !! What a hidden gem I stumbled upon. The oldest post in Texas, and it's fun. The building is beautiful, but it's the volunteers and staff that make this place. I just separated from the military, and they make want to volunteer already. Anyone can stop by for a drink and free popcorn or to just say hi. They also do an excellent job with events and tend to hold one for the public every weekend it seems. You can even walk the river and have it be nice and quiet since it isn't near any tourists. read more

There is always something nice about historical sites that sell beer. Now I'm usually the one that drinks craftbeer, however, there is a time and place for an ice cold Bud Light. The VFW is that kind of a place. It's great for hanging out with a couple of friends or a whole group of people. I dropped in on a Saturday and it was packed. The crowd consisted of older people, more than likely many whom were Veterans. Nonetheless I still had a great time. Lots of friendly people to chat it up with and enjoy a cold brew. When you go in, be sure to check their board sometimes they have special events going on. In fact, June 2nd of this year they have a Taco Truck contest. read more

Ok; there are two sides to the VFW Post, one good and one smelly bad. I love the location of the VFW on the Riverwalk and we enjoy having a beer outside in the biergarten (very loosely described) especially if they have a band playing or music. Plenty of room and you can bring in food to eat while you sit. The smelly bad? The inside of the VFW; smells like cat piss downstairs and needs a complete cleaning and airing out. This place has soul. Came on a Saturday night when an oldies band was playing. Let me tell you, the dance floor was hopping! There were a couple hundred people there and everyone seemed to be having a good time. The house is huge and sits along the river, so it's a great location for some outdoor dancing.The inside was kind of dingy, but what do you expect from the oldest post in the state? Comrades, I want to thank Post 76 for the hospitality shown to the Gold Star Families of the Sinsil 7 and their brothers & Sisters-in-Arms by hosting the 10th Angelversary of the Sinsil 7. I was unable to attend due to weather on the East Coast but I watched, via Skype, the honors you rendered to our fallen son's, brother's, husband's, father's, uncle's and cousin's. As a past Post Commander I was not surprised that you stepped forward when guest were not going to be able to go the Warrior and Family Support Center and hosted the event. 3.5 stars for VFW's Oldest Post in Texas! I come here with my family a lot to drink a few and enjoy the music. One the place itself needs a lot of work both on the interior and exterior. I've caught myself tripping on some parts of the house. With the amount of money being raked in from food and drink, I'm not sure why this house hasn't been renovated. The bartenders are very friendly and efficient. They have various local bands that come and play all types of music. I've came during Fiesta for their 10th Street River Festival and it does get pretty packed. They have two stages with different music, one Tejano music artist and one DJ. This place is family friendly and all are welcome! Since this place is centered around the military they always recognize them in different ways. A few tips- get there early as it does get packed every single weekend. Also buy a bucket and fill it with beers as it is cheaper that way. read more

Sipping brews here is like going back in time. Older crowd hangs out here. Great jukebox with a heavy tejano influence. I once got caught up in a birthday party to which I wasn't even invited that lasted till the wee hours. Thoroughly enjoyed myself. read more

Very relaxing place to have a few drinks that won't cost much at all. Sometimes they have bands playing outside, and lots of families come out for evening dinner and cultural fun. Really cheap drinks on the Riverwalk w/ample parking is why most people visit, and during Fiesta (mid-April) this place is CRAZY! So much food you can eat dinner 2-3 times for less than $20, and there's enough music & drinks to go around. There's a small tv, but it's not really a 'sports bar' place. Mostly 'have some drinks & a smoke on the patio type of place'.... read more

Not a true VFW post. Anyone can come in, which takes away from the true purpose of the VFW. Beer is still cheap, but no liquor license.

The menu changes seasonally but there are a few constants on the menu like the burger. The bar is amazing too. Just like the menu, the variety of beers on tap changes on a regular basis with the exception of a few. The bar specials are great and they also have a late night happy hour. Great place with the fine Veterans who put their lives on the line for the people of this great nation. Service is good but beware of the potential predators as with any place where other retired or senior-aged folks gather for social entertainment. Potential predators includes employees of the establishment too. VFW's are a good place to troll for another mark and these scammers are ambitious working more than one at a time. When something appears too good to be true, it usually is, so make sure you are in a position where you can be protected from these predators and the unholy and unbelievably evil things they will do for the sake of money. The FBI calls it the newest crime wave -- crimes against the elderly or incapacitated persons. Beware of the predator's attempts to isolate the elderly person from his family and friends that truly loved him no matter how much was in his bank account. Have legal documents prepared with your end-of-life instructions and if possible appoint one child and along with the spouse to make healthcare decisions. In Texas, the healthcare facility will automatically assign those rights to the spouse, predator or not. And definitely do not expect much from Adult Protective Services, I'm not even sure why they exist. In our case, the only adult protected was the abuser. Have fun! read more

Employees were very rude and disrespectful. Did not care to inquire if I was a member or even a combat veteran. More early 20 something's and other non veterans than combat veterans. Was there to speak to Post Commander and was told that I was not going to be served because of where I was standing. This happened in front of about six twenty-one year olds that probably never set foot in a combat zone. Status as VFW should be revoked. read more

this place is awesome, the drinks are inexpensive, there is live music, and friendly people and dancing, its a family atmosphere, there are old folks and kids of all ages. Just a wonderful place to spend some time when the weather is right outside. I would highly recommend not living anywhere close to the vfw hall. They continually violate the noise ordinance, playing music so loud on their patio even when no one is there. They have made living on the river a nightmare with many nights not being able to sleep until 1:30 or 2:00. Maybe something can be done when the 300 new people move in across the river from the vfw. Let's honor our veterans not by playing music so loud that they can't here each other talk but respectfully give them an environment to enjoy each other's company. I believe they are more concerned with beer sales than anything else. This is not a casual observer but someone who has lived next door to the vfw for a year. read more
