The only other midwife delivering in a hospital in the Houston area is one that works with Dr. de Ayala at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Hospital. The 6 midwives work together in a group to care for their patients -- because they're the only hospital midwife group in Houston, they do fill up fast so you should call and register with them as a patient AS SOON AS POSSIBLE once you find out you're pregnant. I believe they take only 40 pregnant patients per month. I was very pleased with their care overall as I delivered my second baby. The reason for 4 stars and not 5 stars is just because of the few items in the "cons" list below. PROS: * The midwives treat pregnancy like a normal, natural event -- rather than a minefield loaded with risks and obstacles. They are low-intervention and this should decrease your risk of a C-section. But you can still get an epidural if you want. * They don't order a bunch of extra or unnecessary tests * They already automatically do all the things I wanted in my natural birth plan (such as: you can eat and drink during labor; intermittent fetal monitoring; birthing ball is provided; option to use hydrotherapy during labor -- there's a tub and shower in the L&D rooms; compresses and counterpressure and lubricant to decrease the risk of tearing when you push; pushing allowed in different positions; delayed cord clamping; they try not to break your water artificially unless indicated for some reason & they'll discuss it with you first to get your permission; post-delivery Pitocin is given on a case-by-case basis) CONS: * Parking can be a headache (Parking in the underground garage will cost you $8-10 per visit. Sometimes the garage gets completely full & you may circle for a while before you find a spot, or you may have to park off-site. You can buy a discounted parking pass to get up to 15% off. You could also park in the surface lot across Main St from the hospital & it's cheaper, but it fills up quickly on weekday mornings and the parking spots are tiny.) * On average, I spent about 1 hour total at each visit -- they often run behind, so it's not a quick in-and-out visit. But part of this is because the midwives take the time to talk to you and address your concerns. * There are 6 midwives, so you'll get someone different at most appointments -- then when you go into labor, you'll get whoever's on call but depending who it is, you may not have seen them in months - so they could be a little unfamiliar to you. * If you need an emergency C-section, it'll likely be done by a 3rd year resident (but these are the most experienced residents who are almost done with their program and almost ready to practice independently).

Prenatal care: Visits seemed extremely rushed, like she was always in a hurry, but she was never…read morerude. She was definitely nice, and always asked how I was feeling. She justified everything as normal, but agreed to prescribe me some heartburn medication since none of the OTC things were working, and mine was so bad that I couldn't even lay down without intense burning. She was empathetic when I ended up with a PUPPS rash, and gave me suggestions of things I could do to ease the discomfort. Since I had a scheduled c-section, she gave me several dates to choose from, which was nice. Postnatal care: This is where I have issues. The MFM had me on baby asprin since week 20, and I'm not sure if there was a lack of communication, but I was never informed that I needed to stop taking it prior to surgery. That being said, I ended up with pretty bad postpartum hemorrhaging that could have been easily avoided. I will say, I do like that she made my incision super low so it's not visible even with bikini-style underwear. She also put "everything" back well, so my abdomen looks defined at times because of how she placed everything. The nurses are the reason I skipped my 6 month postpartum checkup. I don't remember their names, but one of them was super rude to me when I called about my postpartum hemorrhaging. I even remember one of them being sassy when I would call in for questions while I was pregnant. It's also alarming that I skipped the appt, and no one ever called to check up. As bad as this sounds, I still haven't gotten checked out, but I plan on finding a different OB/Gyn and getting a very overdue postpartum check. Nurses make a huge difference in how the patient feels about a practice, and I have to dock off a star because of their service.

They are not patient in answering your questions and of course I had to deal with them on wrong billings. 3) Although I have never met Dr. Wong's nurse Rebecca, I already dislike her due to her phone etiquette. That's how amazing she was. First of all, I could cry thinking about the relief I felt to FINALLY see a doctor who I actually felt comfortable talking with. And we talked for an hour. About my health. She not only answered all of my questions with honesty and compassion, she thoroughly talked me through the reasons behind all of her advice. She genuinely empowered me to be an advocate for my health, educating me and validating my own concerns and ideas along the way. I left with a folder full of notes and recommendations on dietary improvements, supplements to take, books to read, and people to see if I wanted more specifics. And just when I wanted to hug her as I left, she hugged me first. Why can't all doctors be like this?! Now to the exam and experience of the clinic: hot tea, soft robes and blankets, even a space heater to keep me warm and cozy. She and her staff really went the extra mile to make it the most comfortable visit to the doctor I've ever heard of. As we all know, the well woman exam is not exactly the most fun event to look forward to, but I have to say I can't wait to go back just to talk to her again. As others have posted, and as the website says, she doesn't take insurance, and you will pay for your visit out of pocket. However, the nurse effortlessly showed me how to get the most bang for my buck between insurance and my FSA. And honestly, and hour with Dr. Roberston is more than worth the cash in my opinion. No consultation. After I went elsewhere for a 2nd opinion. The records this place sent over had notes that the Dr. "discussed" all of these issues and info that we definitely did NOT discuss. That was disappointing. I ended up with a way less invasive treatment plan that was better for me by far. Careful here of assembly line medical care.
