So nice! :) I bookmarked this spot to visit since it was my boyfriend's 1st visit in Berkeley, and I thought this was a cool store to check out. We did have to check in his backpack at the entrance of the store, which is no issue. They have lots of selection of music, and my bf found a vinyl that he has been looking for a long time - The Big Lebowski one. He was so happy! This is definitely a good spot to check out if you're into music and especially if you want to get vinyls and cds. They also have some cool lunch boxes and posters as well plus other interesting items. Parking in Berkeley can be tough though. We drive around for about 18 minutes before we finally found a spot to park.

On top of that, I asked an employee where their DVDs are, as not every section is clearly marked, and he pointed below me and said they are right down there as if I was supposed to know that. I was not expecting this kind of horrible customer service. It was my first time here and will definitely be my last.

When I came in a few weeks ago I was the only one inside and was looking for Queen - Hot Space. Who I assume to be the shop owner knew he didn't have it, but showed me the Queen section and I walked out with The Game. There was also a flyer at the checkout area advertising a record sale going on at USF, so props for advertising other record finding events. Everything isn't here. It's a local vinyl shop that has so much to look through, and if you're into that then this is the record shop for you. It gives me the thrill of thrifting back in 2007-2016, but for records. I walked out with international vinyls showcasing music from Brazil and Nicaragua last weekend, but finding the Thriller album was icing on the cake. I wasn't really looking for it, but there is a Jackson 5 section showcasing many of the Jackson 5 albums and their individual projects. Service - I had great service the first time I went because no one else was there. The second time I went, the service was still good but being that it was busy, he pointed me to the exact locations I could find what I was looking for if it was there. I feel like he really knows his shop, and that in itself is valuable. There are many, many vinyls. They're organized as well.

Then we were helped by one of the employees, and everything changed. She was incredibly kind, understanding, and patient. She genuinely wanted to help us and made the experience feel welcoming rather than rushed or transactional. Because of her attitude and customer service, we decided we wanted to support the store anyway. To top it all off, she told us ahead of time that the lightstick needed batteries and then gave them to us. That honesty and generosity completely caught us off guard in the best way possible. Thanks to her, we were prepared and stress free going into the concert. Experiences like this are why local shops matter. We will definitely come back whenever we are in the area. Thank you so much.

And I have seen her scare off some customers by not letting them try on wigs, but I see why she'd hesitate to let 7 teenagers in a pack wander in at once to try a lot of wigs they may not buy.... a gamble though, what if they all spent their allowance to buy one and became customers? (I think her "pay 2 to 5 bucks for wig caps for hygiene reasons" works well, and I've never had an issue with that. Sometimes she'll bend the new rules a bit about 'no wig trying on', I remember I once almost swore from coming back when a rich date I had was told he couldn't try on a 100$ wig, {she didn't know his income, and figured he was just a straight dude playing around and not a fancy actor trying to expand his look seriously,} but he was charming, so next thing you know he was trying them on and balling out. I'm just saying.) But I like her store. I remember the first time I ever came into her store, she was shocked to see how I somehow fit my medium sized box braids under a bob wig like it was nothing. Always fun at her store, I like to come here and get a new wig whenever I want an uplift. She always reminds me that they're not everyday wigs, and little does she know the wig quality holds up amazingly. The colorful wigs are like 29 bucks lowest (plus 3 bucks tax) and the more pricey colorful ones are like 50 bucks. And i turn HEADS, like full on stopped in the street 7 times in a night to get complimented because of how realistic and iconic the wigs here are, high quality and really nice colors! And people think it's my real hair, I like wearing these more than my natural hair colored Outre wigs. I wear them so often, its a blast. So if you want starburst pink Sabrina Carpenter tresses, periwinkle blue swishy bobs, a Smores platinum blonde bob reminiscent of Xtina Aguilera meets Britney Spears, long red Ariel-like flowy siren hair, or anything, come here. Sue is so sweet. I hope if you've had a tricky experience here, you can give her a second chance. Since funny enough, the place used to be a VHS and DVD store named "Alameda Wigs" with maybe 10 wigs in a small corner of the two room sized store FILLED to the brim with blu-rays, and I remember I came in like a year or so ago like "Hello! Is it okay if I try on a wig?", and she was so baffled and shook that someone wanted a wig. Like, amazingly hilariously baffled, as if I was a biblical angel delivering a prophecy that her wig shop should, yknow, sell wigs. I think people just never stopped by before, since it was a DVD shop in 2024 labelled a wig shop, and so it just was a new concept to her to expand into that territory, yknow? And next time I came in a month later, bet your ass all the tapes were gone and it was ALL WIGS and she had a huge smile on her face. And a lot of new customers! Amen! She seems new to selling wigs specifically and just seems to want to have a high quality hygienic reputation, but I promise it's worth it even to gamble on a wig that seems like it'd be a good fit for you. Even my big HUGE head can fit the wigs, and maybe she'll let you try on a wig if you come in consistently and are polite. (And maybe ask to double cap and reassure you're serious.)

They had it in the back and, not sure of the quality they tossed it in for free. It was very nice. They have a scratch free record guarantee, which I applaud, but the complimentary add in was very much appreciated. I've come again and brought a friend and we've both bought a couple to a few records. The last time I went there was an Anderson Paak collection. I wish they had Malibu, but they did have Ventura. I strongly contemplated, but ended up getting Childish Gambino's "Because the Internet." Prices - they're not even bad. Trust me. They have tapes and cds too. I like to dig, and this store satisfies that. Conveniently located near Rockridge BART, there's a second hand thrift store in the area, plenty of eateries, Trader Joe's a couple blocks up, and other mini shops along the way. It's worth stopping in and checking out especially if planning a day in this area.

That ended up not being what I browsed, though. I went over to their small but sufficient record selection. They had top albums and artists, like Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life. I kept looking and looking and found The Internet's Ego Death for $32. Yep, found what I needed and almost left but checking out their used albums they had Kendrick's good kid, m.A.A.d city and Drake's Views for about $27 or $28 each. Idk what a good used album price is really going for these days, but I was happy with my selection, went to the counter and checked out. I can't really say much for service because I was in and out so quickly and there didn't appear to be many employees, which I get that these days.

When my kids were young, they played in the little Playhouse. My granddaughter found her own spot.

Compared to the Walmart one, this had limited selection, so many out of stock, and came with a disclosure that returns needed to be made before 7pm. We didn't realize how literal they were. We figured we'd just be given a late fee. I work in the city, so I have helluva time making it there before 7. When I get there, Safeway is open of course (24hrs as it states on the DVDPLAY website), but the kiosk will not accept the DVD. It told customers to call them. I thought the kiosk was just broken or something, but it turned out that DVDPlay was just closed. Great! So inconvenient. I will not use them again.

This place is great. Its a great neighborhood rental shop. This is the best movie shop to get movies from in the east bay. I like getting movies the old way by walking to the movie store and taking your time to browse around from movies unlike redbox where you have to wait for the person to in front of you to finish browsing the movie before they choose one. This movie store has every new movie and they have a very helpful staff. They have everything including video games, VHS, DVD, and blu-ray. They also have a huge selection of movies and if you want to rent old movies there is no where to rent from anymore, but video room has all the old movies. Definitely support them and try this place out. read more

I feel so guilty for going with Netflix. Video Room rules and I'm sorry for abandoning them. They were on the DVD tip from the beginning. They have lots of rare films (B-movies, foreign, art), and the staff there know movies. There recommendations never steered me wrong. And they have their annual Academy Awards contest. If only they delivered videos in the mail... read more

snicker, snicker Rentals are $4.25, but they'll patronize you (and your dog) for free. Even the rivet heads at REEL were nicer about helping you find that weird video you absolutely must have. there are better options out there read more

I placed an online order and got no contact, I'll own that partly was my fault because I guess I didn't enter my email? But I didn't receive an order text either. So, I decided to head in since I was around there to ask... One of the newer associates was very nice and helpful as much as she could be, but the other, Cam I believe her name was, was rude for absolutely no reason at all, unrelated to my issue but I heard Cam straight up lie to a customer on the phone while I was waiting for help telling the person that she couldn't help because it was a "big" store and it was SO busy she couldn't offer them the assistance they were asking for. It was me and one other person in the store browsing...she had time and I was being very patient. She just didn't want to be bothered. I guess their preorders are separately handled and sent over from a warehouse - which I didn't know, and my order wasn't ready. I found the vinyl I ordered on the wall and asked a simple question of if I could just purchase that one and they could cancel the order I placed for pick up since I don't live in the area. Instead of a customer-first answer (I would have even accepted a kind "I'm sorry, it's against our policy, we can't do that") I was met with attitude and blatant annoyance by Cam. It was as if I was being scolded rather than kindly informed of their process. Good thing there's lots of other really cool record shops around these days. If you're looking for a cool indie record store go somewhere else - peace out 1234 Go.

Contact is the kind of small, curated record store that I love to see. I only just found out about…read moretheir shop recently, but am really excited to check them out again soon. They are located in an alley off 49th (aptly named Alley 49), that has a number of cool small shops. Their shop is towards the end on the right (if coming from 49th.) As you walk in, new arrival LPs are the first thing you see, with several boxes of 7"s to your left. They also have several bins lining the left and back walls. While there are some smaller sections for genre's like blues, jazz, reggae, etc., the focus here is definitely more in the rock and alternative realm. Pricing for what they had seemed reasonable. Given they have a strong selection, I would expect slightly elevated pricing, but nothing out of the ordinary here. While I wasn't able to find anything to take home during my visit, the person working the counter let me do my thing browsing the store, which is my preference (over being bugged about what you're looking for.) Obviously to each their own, but suited my needs just fine!

I also frequent the shop in the SF Mission District and have visited the NYC Lower East Side location. What makes Stranded unique is that it feels like a well curated shop of eclectic music. They carry new and used genres - Jazz, Rock, R&B, Hip Hop, Electronic, African, Reggae, Soundtracks, etc.. It's always a pleasure to stop bye because you never know what you will find. So be prepared to spend some time there if you are a true digger. The guys in the shop are also pretty friendly and welcoming. It also helps that the shop is located on a nice stretch of College Avenue in Oakland that has a lot to offer and close to Rockridge BART Station - shopping (groceries, hardware, bookstore, bakery, coffee/tea, home decor, etc.) restaurants and bars at different price points. They also have a small couch that can come in handy if your friend or partner just wants to hang out while you are browsing. Prices can vary and are comparable to other record shops. Anyone that enjoys vinyl would be well advised to check out this shop !

I often went to the Fox Theatre but somehow always missed the bookstore across the street! So often…read moreolder books (those published 20+ years ago) are often super pricey. But many of these books are very reasonably priced, like $7.50-$25! Almost all of the stock is older, even obscure books. But it's a book lover's treasure hunt. I picked up a really interesting book about San Francisco's history from 1948 for only $10! Definitely recommend this place and it's a very quick walk from the Broadway BART station. The only thing I'd "change" is recommending that the owner put more of their stock on ThriftBooks.com to enhance their profits. But that would be at the peril of Bay Area bookworms! :)

Still couldn't find the book, and kept asking me to be patient. I was patient for a long time. Now it's July 2025, about 3 weeks shy of ONE YEAR since I ordered the book. Wrote to them again, no response. But they still have it listed for sale on their website, so I took a shot and ordered it again. Then they wrote me a snotty note and told me to quit ordering it, they haven't found it yet. I wrote back and asked how they can possibly still be looking for a book after one year? Then they wrote back and said they were canceling my order! Very crappy customer service. Zero stars.
